monica.supra@tametimes.co.za tame TIMES has received many complaints from visitors to Jackson Dam in Brackenhurst since Saturday 27 June. Visitors have complained about dead fish floating on the dam’s surface and alleged that it was possibly due to chemical waste being pumped into the dam by Rand Water. On the tame TIMES Facebook page, one of the readers had the following comment: ‘’I am a regular visitor to the dam, twice a week in fact and there have been numerous occasions where the smell of ammonia is so overwhelming. It comes from the Rand Water Board. Surely it cannot be good. To my mind if the fish die then there is contaminated water. So now what about our dogs and even more so the children who stuck hands and feet in too? This problem has to be fixed.’’ tame TIMES contacted Rand Water to investigate the matter, and received a response from Media Relations Manager Justice Mohale, stating that Rand Water was notified of dead fish at Jackson Dam, adjacent to Palmiet Pump Station. They immediately dispatched officials to the site to investigate.

‘“Water samples were taken for laboratory testing and the outcome revealed that there were no indications of sewage in the water.” “A discharge of clean water from Palmiet was observed (29 and 30 June) – this was quite a strong flow. No chlorine smell was detected. The general observation and conclusion

drawn from the site visit and the testing of the water is that the fish died from a temperature impact.” “As was noted, Gauteng experienced extremely low temperatures on Saturday 27, June 2015 and this could have contributed to fish deaths.’’ What do you think? ALBERTON HISTORY

HISTORIESE HOEK

Koerante het berig: “Pleasure seekers on the East Rand in search of something new and different have now a delightful new rendezvous where they can spend many a pleasant hour.”

Sometimes when you meet someone, you’re not immediately sure what role that person will play in your life. Sometimes you think you know, but you are so way off that it seems like it will never make sense. At tame TIMES, we have a strong desire to provide help where we can. 18 July marks Mandela Day, asking the country to donate just 67 minutes of their time for a worthy cause. Of course this doesn’t have to stop at 67 minutes, or be limited to 18 July. We have identified some charities in the area for you to support, and we will always welcome suggestions from the community. So when someone enters your life, think about it. Their presence could mean nothing to you, but your presence could mean the world to them. From my side, don’t let anyone let you feel insignificant. Like my girl Eleanor Roosevelt said: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Thank you for submitting your stories and sharing them with the community. We love hearing from you. PS: thank you for the quotes to help us out of our internet predicament, we’re looking into it!

Say NO to violence YES TO EDUCATION

Empowering our country’s youth through education about rape and abuse, changing social norms, one learner at a time is a massive task. Every day, South African citizens have to deal with the consequences of our shocking crime statistics. It is often stated that one in three women will be a victim of sexual violence, or that they havec more chance of being raped than learning how to read. TEARS Foundation advocates for the rights of those effected by rape and abuse, but has also identified the importance of creating a pro-active approach – through a sustainable and educational tool called LifeBoard. TEARS uses LifeBoard as a tool to educate, empower and support the youth with respect to rape and abuse in their communities, through an innovative and interactive platform. Mara Glennie, founder of TEARS Foundation, said, “The primary aim of LifeBoard is to communicate to our youth what rape and abuse is and how it can affect them and their surrounding communities. Another objective of LifeBoard is to provide help and support through access to counselling services and a channel for reporting the crime.” The Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have

endorsed LifeBoard and are currently outlining a strategy on how to help employees to become LifeBoard coaches and implement LifeBoard in their community contribution strategies. TEARS is currently harnessing relationships with other governmental organs to ensure that LifeBoard becomes an ongoing educational programme. LifeBoard offers a unique approach, as it encourages interaction, ignites fun, and sparks creativity and models positive group interaction by implementing communication skills and appropriate behaviours. TEARS Foundation is able to bring LifeBoard to schools and organisations across Gauteng, as well as train educators, community leaders and active citizens to become LifeBoard coaches,” added LifeBoard project manager Kalliste Khun. The TEARS foundation held a workshop for the launch of the TEARS LifeBoard game and for the training of the first 17 new LifeBoard Facilitators. With the present and future training of LifeBoard Facilitators, the workshop was a high-powered environment that allowed for maximum facilitator skill development. Not only did this offer attendees effective and discerning information about rape and abuse, but also how to offer a meaningful and empathetic approach that endeavours to support learners. The LifeBoard Facilitator Training Workshop

focussed on communication and leadership skills development, as well as the capacity to develop their self-esteem and confidence. “With LifeBoard we are approaching our learners to understand and create a positive attitude towards the combat of rape and abuse, which will harness a positive behaviour, for the potential to establish a new generation that stands for the basic human rights of all and

Ek lees oor die naweek hierdie aanhaling vanaf ‘n vriend se Facebook muur: “There is never a time when we are not the church. Every action, conversation and decision is informed by and plays out against the backdrop of the relationship we have with Jesus. Everywhere I go, everywhere you go, there is the church. - Reggie McNeal.”

response to our Soup and Blanket Drive was amazing. This does not mean that we do not need more donations, though, as winter is not over yet. We still need lots of blankets and warm clothes, or any other items that you do not have a need for. You can contact Ankia on 011 907 2922.

Ek leer so baie by hierdie lewensgenote.

Dit vind plaas by die groepleier, Magda Deysel, se woning (22 Orgideestraat, Brakenhurst). Vir enige navrae, kontak Magda Deysel by 084 406 9986. Sien jou graag daar.

Love Week 2015 Last week, the teens of Crossroads Church braved the cold in the early mornings to collect money and blankets for the less fortunate.

Over R30 000 was raised, 400 blankets were collected and 565 people were fed through soup drives and food handouts.

ERFENISVERENIGING

VIER LID SE 90STE

VERJAARSDAG

PUTCO WITHDRAWS FROM

THREE MUNICIPALITIES

The Public Utility Transport Corporation (Putco), that provides commuter bus services in Gauteng, Limpopo and the western parts of Mpumalanga, has decided not to renew three of its contracts with the Gauteng Department of Transport in parts of the Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng municipalities this month. This move will affect about 180 of Putco’s current fleet of 1 900 buses. Putco’s Managing Director Franco Pisapia said on 29 June that they are confident that the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has prioritised a seamless change of bus operators in order to ensure that commuters in these areas will get to work, school and back home with minimum disruption as of 1 July 2015. The contracts in Mamelodi, Meyerton and Kathorus expired on Tuesday and will not be renewed. This will affect commuters using the route between Kathorus, Edenvale, Germiston, Linbro Park, Johannesburg, Boksburg and Kempton Park in the east; between Mamelodi and the Tshwane CBD in the north; as well as the route between Evaton, Sebokeng, Orange Farm and Meyerton in the south. The reason why the contracts were not renewed was that the contracts were

no longer financially viable - due to the END OF AN ERA: company’s current operating and financial The Department conditions. Department spokesperson of Transport Octavia Mamabolo confirmed Putco’s announces the cancellation of the three services, but added cancellation of that reports that Putco would cancel all its Putco contracts services across Gauteng were untrue. She in three reassured affected commuters that Autopax, municipalities. a subsidiary of Prasa, would step in to replace Putco on all the subsidised routes within their areas. Mamabolo added that Vadi had announced his department’s intention PUTCO HAS to renegotiate subsidized contracts with bus DECIDED NOT TO companies in Gauteng during his budget RENEW THREE OF speech the previous week. ITS CONTRACTS The matter was clarified by Transport MEC Ismail Vadi on Tuesday during a briefing at WITH THE GAUTENG one of Putco’s depots. DEPARTMENT The Department tweeted that Putco’s OF TRANSPORT decision ‘’had the potential to leave many IN PARTS OF commuters and residents stranded with THE TSHWANE, no transport operations to get to work o[r] EKURHULENI school.” Putco said that it had made the Department AND SEDIBENG aware of its intention not renew some of its MUNICIPALITIES loss-making contracts as early as February, THIS MONTH a month before the contracts were due to expire. It planned on redeploying all available buses and resources to its other contracted routes.

Creative Council stimulates for medical study Ekurhuleni film industry Caitlin Goodwin, a 6th year All hands are on deck to develop the film industry in the City of Ekurhuleni as industry creatives and the municipality establish a partnership set to cultivate the performing arts. The City recently hosted a trilogy of workshops on film-making at various art centres which culminated in a mini-film festival. During discussions at the festival it emerged that performing artists and amateur film makers were yearning for more knowledge to be imparted to them by various stakeholders such as the National Film and Video Foundation. The unanimous chanting of the slogan “Each One Teach One” displayed the artists’ eagerness to learn the tricks of the trade that will enable them to create films that tell authentic Ekurhuleni stories. As an intervention to resuscitate the struggling Ekurhuleni film industry, the Ekurhuleni Creatives Council (ECC) was established as a platform that will address the challenges faced by amateur film-makers. The Council has also been tasked with overseeing the production process of films made in Ekurhuleni. “As the City Of Ekurhuleni, we pledge to support this vision of developing the film industry with an aim to empower amateur film-makers with necessary skills so that the sector may ultimately contribute meaningfully towards the country’s GDP,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Cllr Dorah Mlambo. The ECC is made up of six members inclusive of both amateur and well-established film makers, each one bringing their own expertise in production, directing, acting, writing and administration.

Homeopathy student at the University of Johannesburg, is currently doing her master’s research on the effect of individualised Homeopathic treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder in children between the ages of 3 and 6. It is a non-profit research study, for which she needs volunteers to take part. Participation in the study is free of charge, voluntary and confidential. Goodwin is looking to further the understanding of the role that homeopathy may play in managing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study takes place over 12 weeks and consists of four consultations every four weeks, which will take place at the University of Johannesburg Doornfontein Health Centre. Each consultation will consist of a medical history taking, two scales which will measure ASD severity, and a physical exam. After each consultation, each participant will receive a non-toxic homeopathic remedy, prescribed according to their individual symptoms and characteristics.

A leadership evolution: this is how organizers of the inaugural Vaal Triangle Campus (NWU Vaal) Leadership Summit is describing the first-of-a-kind leadership summit that will take place on 12 August 2015. The NWU Vaal Leadership Summit, in collaboration with the Ukuvula Trust, represents a dynamic platform that will bring together some of South Africa’s most brilliant business minds, strategists and thought leaders to share their insights into business, economic and management issues with industry front-runners and executives. By providing this platform - from which intellectual capacity can be shared - the summit is contributing to the advancement of leadership in business, government and civil society. According to Prof Herman van der Merwe, Executive Director of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Information Technology and voice of the summit, it is important for leaders to recognize the fact that mindful leadership has the potential to transform lives, business and industry, communities and ultimately the world. “South Africa has made big strides in the past 20 years and advances have occurred across multiple fronts: political, social, and economic. The challenge, however, remains to address complex issues such as prosperity and wellbeing that threaten to undermine sustainable development. Addressing such challenges will require strong leadership from all levels of society in the years to come,” says Prof Van der Merwe. HOMELY SANCTUARY FOR FRAIL-CARE PATIENTS

Having a loved one dealing with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s can make for a very trying for anyone. Sasonah Lodge can be a valuable resource throughout this time. At Sasonah Lodge, the staff members believe that Alzheimer care begins with treating those dealing with the disease with respect and dignity. They recognize and understand the stages of memory loss when caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s and reflect that on their care programmes. They are dedicated to helping dementia sufferers through understanding, wisdom and support throughout the caregiving journey. Sasonah Lodge accommodates any person who requires frail- or full-time care. They are staffed by a nursing sister, full-time care workers and an on-site chef. The lodge is visited monthly by a hairdresser and a podiatrist. It offers full-time residence, a day care facility and holiday/weekend care. The lodge is contracted to a medical response company to give them 24-hour

medical response backup. Germiston Patrols is also assisting with 24-hour armed response. Sasonah Lodge has managed to erect three cottages, but unfortunately only one has been completed. In due time, when funds become available, they will be able to finish the remaining two. The lodge is owned and run by Colleen Nunn, a registered nursing sister with more than 20 years’ experience. She is registered with the Nursing Council, the Alzheimer’s Association of South Africa and the Parkinson Association of South Africa. They are looking to hire new staff members: a qualified sister to work every second weekend, as well as two staff nurses to work nightshifts only. For more information about Sasonah Lodge, donations or to apply for any of the positions, contact Sister Colleen Nunn on info@sasonah.co.za or (011) 872 1740. Sasonah Lodge is situated at 28 Hamilton Road, Webber, Germiston.

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST HOME INVASION

LESSONS FROM

MARIKANA?

STRIKE SEASON

The Din-Al-View CPF is warning the community that home invasions are taking place and getting out of hand. Here are a few tips for preventing this traumatic experience: Most people do not have a plan for how to deal with this situation. We think that the police or the CPF or our neighbour will protect us. We often deny the possibility of this happening to us and assume that it only happens to other people. This assumption can, unfortunately, be incorrect - as anyone can become a victim of this type of crime.

IS HERE TO STAY

Opinion piece by Palesa Yates

The Marikana Commission Report has been released and we have been told that senior SAPS managers lied during the hearings and that the police handled the situation badly. But what has been done about charting a better way forward? Many of the family members of the deceased miners are in dire financial straits and, according to Webber Wentzel’s Peter Leon a year after the strike ended, there was a “R12 billion fall in mine production and a half a per cent decline in gross domestic product (GDP).” The striking rock-drill operators themselves received increases of between 11 and 22% after six weeks of strike and a signing bonus of R2000. But they had been out on strike for five months and – weakened by a lack of nourishing food and exercise – had to be helped back into shape in order to handle their physically demanding work underground. According to a presentation by Bell, Dewar & Hall, all the Marikana strikers ended up worse off financially – despite their recordbreaking increase and the fact that before the strike they earned more than 75% of South Africans (including our beginner teachers). Why, then, did the miners go out on strike in the first place? About a year ago tame TIMES interviewed young Marikana rock-driller Ian Majola. (* real name withheld) Born and bred in the Eastern Cape, Majola had been working at Marikana for three years and had been out on strike for four months. The job of rock-driller, he explained, involves hard physical labour for eight hours a day, preparing the rock-face, making supports, getting ready for blasting, clearing 150 holes a day and so on. Conditions are very hot, claustrophobic and dark – without a light you cannot see your hand in front of your face. Then there are the dangers of methane gas, rockfalls and underground fires. Every time Majola goes underground, he knows he “may not see daylight at the end of the shift.” He is always exhausted, he said, because he often works on his rest-day to earn an extra R290. When asked for his opinion on the Amcu boss’s reported multiple cars and houses,

BE VIGILANT AT ALL TIMES AND DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED TO DO ANYTHING YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE DOING. AFTER ALL, IT IS YOUR LIFE. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.

Majola dismissed the concern, saying that Mathunjwa “works for his cars and houses” and added that he himself had two homes and two wives in the Eastern Cape. On the subject of promotion, Majola said there should be automatic promotion for miners after five years on the job. Currently, he said, only two to three percent of miners were promoted and there seemed to be no easily identifiable reasons for their selection. Mine bosses in his opinion “earn too much. They say they earn more because they are educated and we are not educated; but we are the hard workers.” According to a City Press article from August 2012, the outgoing Lonmin CEO at the time was earning R1,2 million a month while the package of a rock-drill operator cost the company only R10 500 a month. When asked how the strike could be settled, Majola’s answer was an adamant: “R12 500 without deductions.” He claimed that he and others were ultimately fighting for the sake of their children and so short-term losses would not deter them from industrial action. It seems that strike season is here to stay. Perhaps the most many South Africans can hope for in the short term is better police handling of public order situations. [sources: news24.com/Archives/CityPress; reuters.com; mineafrica.com]

MAJOLA CLAIMED THAT HE AND OTHERS WERE ULTIMATELY FIGHTING FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR CHILDREN AND SO SHORT-TERM LOSSES WOULD NOT DETER THEM FROM INDUSTRIAL ACTION

We need to develop a “Survivor” mindset. Preventing home invasion through entry by deception involves your being on your guard. Do not open your door to strangers and be as sure as you can be about the identity of those that you allow inside your home. The tactics that criminals use to trick their way into your home to commit incursion are the same kind of deceptive ruses that criminals use for distraction burglary. The difference is that, once they are inside your home, invaders will quickly drop any pretence, overpower you and use terror - even violence - to obtain what they want. They already know about your new purchase, as the box it arrived in is lying on your pavement for collection with your other refuse. Rather tear the box up and take it to work with you for disposal, or ensure that the pieces are out of sight in a refuse bag. Criminals will attempt to pass themselves off as representatives of companies, repair services, local council officers, charity workers, etc. Uniforms are no guarantee that the person wearing them are genuine. Home Invasion criminals rarely work alone unless they think they are dealing with a frail person, so be more wary if two or more people arrive unexpectedly at your gate. If the person is alone, ensure that there are no other people loitering nearby or approaching your home. If someone wants access to enter your home for any reason, refuse. Do not allow a feeling of guilt or pity cause you to drop your guard. Even those entering legitimately to view items that you have advertised for sale or to quote on services may use an excuse to separate themselves from each other and one may move around your home while you are occupied with the other. You may be informed that you have won a prize and they are delivering it. If you have not been contacted or have not entered the competition, refuse access. If they need to call emergency services, you can make the call on their behalf, but do not let them in. Report these attempts to your SAPS Sector vehicle, Security Company, CPF and neighbours. The Sector Five areas are Albermarle, Dinwiddie, Castleview, Union and Norton Small Farms. For Sector Five residents, the SAPS sector van contact numbers are 071 675 6862 and 071 675 6862. The Germiston Police Station number is 011 871 5000.

Men can be

victims too Lizeth Kotze 011 862 8500 Society is conditioned to believe that men are always the perpetrators of sexual abuse and rape, and that women and girls are always the victims. It is generally believed that boys and men cannot fall victim to this horrific crime. Believing this, however, is the same as believing that men cannot feel pain.

“Addiction, depression, anxiety, rage and anger, guilt and humiliation are just some of the serious problems that could arise due to sexual abuse or rape.” World statistics support the fact that this is a ridiculous myth and that one in every five boys is sexually abused by the age of sixteen. The statistics do not prove to be much worse for females. One in every four girls will undergo the same abuse by the age of sixteen. Although more sexual abuse claims more female than male victims, the sad reality is that boys and men remain the unacknowledged

victims of sexual abuse. Society offers limited opportunity for them to disclose their trauma and thus few opportunities for getting the support and help they so desperately need. Whether you are male or female, falling victim to sexual abuse or rape remains an horrific ordeal that could have a lasting effect on you and your family. Addiction, depression, anxiety, rage and anger, guilt and humiliation are

Ritalin

no cure-all Lizeth Kotze 011 862 8500 Stimulant drugs like Ritalin, Dexedrine and Concerta are synonymous with conditions like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD for short. It is generally believed that these drugs help children to ‘calm down’ and therefore assist them to concentrate better.

There is no denying that these stimulants might have achieved what they are set out to do. At the same time, one should not ignore the negative effects that are often accompanied by the consumption of these drugs. Many studies have found that the above-mentioned drugs, which are prescribed to those with ADHD, can have serious implications in the long run. Even the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) announced that one cannot believe a drug is safe simply because it is on the market. They explain that even though a drug like Ritalin is approved for human consumption, it does not rule out the possibility for negative side effects to emerge years later. Various studies have found numerous side effects of stimulant drugs like

just some of the serious problems that could arise due to sexual abuse or rape. Sexual abuse and rape is lifealtering, whether the victim is male or female. We need to recondition ourselves to the point where we are able to believe, and show support to, male victims. For more information on the topic visit MatrixMen.org or send an email to martin@matrixmen.co.za.

Experts believe that it could take up to several months for a drug like Ritalin to work itself out of the body’s system. Exploring alternatives like neurodevelopmental learing therapy could prove to be a much safer and more reliable option

Not many people are familiar with the term “sound pollution,” even though we are all at risk. We live in a society filled with noise - with traffic rushing by, cellphones ringing, taxis’ music systems playing at full blast and machines operating everywhere at the expense of our personal auditory systems. Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is a term used to describe the unfortunate cases of hearing loss due to everyday noise. “Sounds are measured in decibels (dB), and each 10dB increase

“It is never too late to begin to practise sound awareness.”

~ Joshua Leeds, The Power of Sound represents a tenfold increase in sound energy. Thus 90dB is ten times noisier than 80dB,” says Joshua Leeds, the author of The Power of Sound. He also explains that a human adult is safe from hearing loss if they limit their surrounding sound intensity to 80dB. Above 85dB, one runs the risk of serious damage to the auditory system. Measures to prevent NIHL include: • Limiting one’s exposure to sounds over 85dB as far as possible, • Giving your ears a rest after every hour of using earphones, • Turning down the volume of your television and/ or radio, • Wearing earplugs when in a high noise environment.

Eating disorders – not just about the food Ritalin. Some of these possible negative effects are: • The forming of cancer tumours, • Epileptic seizures, • Visual disturbances • The increased risk of becoming addicted to substances like cocaine. It furthermore found to disrupt growth hormone production, which has a profound effect on a child’s weight and height. Permanent neurological disorders like twitching of body parts have also been reported. It could also become the start of a vicious cycle filled with many different prescription drugs. This became evident when some children who were using Ritalin to improve their ADHD symptoms, developed signs of depression. This lead to antidepressants being added to their

list of medications. The children then ended up with the reality of using numerous drugs in order to get through a single day. Simply putting an abrupt stop to the use of drugs like Ritalin is dangerous in itself. It could lead to some serious withdrawal symptoms that could result in worsening of the child’s behaviour. Experts believe that it could take up to several months for a drug like Ritalin to work itself out of the body’s system. Exploring alternatives like neurodevelopmental learing therapy could prove to be a much safer and more reliable option than simply resorting to stimulant drugs that could end up doing more harm than good. One should therefore think twice before viewing stimulant drugs like Ritalin as a solution.

On the surface, eating disorders seem to be all about a person’s unhealthy relationship with food, but in fact they are about much more than that. They are the coping mechanisms used to deal with painful emotions or trauma. Because they are unable to control their negative emotions, sufferers find that practising an eating disorder gives them some sense of control. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) distinguishes between four types of eating disorders:

1. Anorexia Nervosa: Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat Behaviour includes restricting calories or skipping meals frequently 2. Bulimia Nervosa May eat large amounts of food (binge) and then eliminating the food (purge) Behaviour includes vomiting, excessive exercise, laxatives or diet pills 3. Binge Eating Disorder Eating a large amount of food to the point of feeling sick (binging) 4. OSFED (Other specified Feeding or Eating Disorder) Any feeding or eating disorder that causes distress but does not meet the criteria for another disorder Eating Disorders are LETHAL 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 10 boys suffer from an eating disorder. 20% of anorexics die. Only 52 – 76% of bulimics fully recover. 87% of sufferers are below the ages of 20 years. The average onset age of an eating disorder is between 9 and 12 years. (www.borntobeyou.com)

Social media giant Facebook has opened its first office in South Africa in Johannesburg. Upmarket urban development Melrose Arch in Johannesburg will house Facebook’s African office, the social network said on Monday. Advertising veteran Nunu Ntshingila has also been named the new head of Facebook’s African office. Facebook plans to use the Johannesburg office as a launchpad to grow the social media service in Africa. Facebook also says that more than 80% of its African users access the social network via mobile phones. “This momentum in Africa comes on top of strong advertiser partnerships and excellent adoption of our products across all regions. In Q1 2015, 52% of our total ad revenue came from outside the US and Canada. But we’re just getting started,” said Nicola Mendelsohn, Vice President, Europe Middle East and Africa, Facebook. The social network initially plans to focus on growing its business in “anchor countries” in Africa such as Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. “Other supported territories include Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Mozambique and Ethiopia,” said Facebook in a statement. First part of new e-toll dispensation started The first part of the new dispensation on e-tolls, announced by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa in May, came into effect on Thursday 02 July, the SA National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) said. New and lowered toll tariffs for non-registered and non e-tag users, as well as lowered monthly caps for registered users, would come into effect. “Government listened to the concerns of lower- and middle-income communities about the impact of transport costs on their budgets, and responded by reducing the tariffs,” spokesperson Vusi Mona said. Mona said account holders were the first to benefit from the new dispensation, with reduced tariffs per kilometre and monthly caps on all classes of vehicles. The monthly cap for Sanral account holders would now be R225, down from R450 per month. Mona said the introduction of the lowered standard tariff, which was now the same as the e-tag tariff, would provide relief to motorists who were not registered. “We remind road users that all aspects of the new dispensation on the Gauteng e-roads will take place over the next 18 months.” Sanral was working with the transport department to implement the new dispensation, which needed software and operational changes. The relief announced for road users that do not have a Sanral account would become applicable once changes had been made to the system. The implementation of the 60% discount

New chapter for SA’s toughest road race

A new chapter in the history of South Africa’s oldest and toughest stage race, the Bestmed Jock Cycle Classique, is about to unfold with the addition of a new three-day road tour through Mpumalanga from July 17. The traditional 154km one-day classic will still take place from Nelspruit (Mbombela) to White River, Sabie and back on July 18, but the country’s top road teams will now push themselves in the 299km tour. According to organiser Wynand de Villiers of ASG Events, the new CSA-sanctioned tour will be an honest and exciting test of SA’s best. “It’s the only event in which these riders will really be tested according to the standards set by Europe’s leading tours. “There will be nowhere to hide and the strongest rider will win the tour, full stop.” Unlike the classic European Alpine stage races however, De Villiers said the Jock would present a continuous climbing challenge, with a total ascent of 7 200m. “There are very few flat sections, which you would find quite a bit of on the European valley floors between the mountains. Here, even between the big mountain passes, the Jock is still up and down.” While some commentators had compared it to the now defunct Hansom Tour, he said it would be of shorter duration but much tougher. “For us, this is a way to provide more competitive racing platforms to help prepare our best local riders for the international circuit. “We believe road racing is back and stronger than ever and we would like to keep doing

our bit to fuel the fire,” said De Villiers. He said the tour would not be limited to the pro field but was also open to serious amateur cyclists who could handle the physical challenge. “It really is a tough ask of these riders and we would like to assist them in the best way possible to get to the finish line every day. The final stage, in particular, is going to be a war of attrition.” A prize purse of R100 000 will be up for grabs across all categories. “We believe in rewarding the top end of the field for their efforts just as much as we believe in providing real value to the amateurs in the event,” he added. De Villiers said both the Classique and Tour would count towards the road component of the new Bestmed National Cycling Series. The Classique will cater for 900 riders, while the field for the Tour will be capped at 300. Limited spots are still available for both. For more information, visit www.thejock. co.za. Alternatively, find Jock Cycle Classique on Facebook or follow @jockcycle. Bestmed Jock Cycle Classique (July 18) Stage 1: Nelspruit – White River (44km) Stage 2: White River – Sabie, via Spitskop (45km) Stage 3: Sabie – Nelspruit via Long Tom Pass (63km) Bestmed Jock Tour (July 17-19) Stage 1: Nelspruit – Kaapsehoop (27km time-trial) Stage 2: Nelspruit – Sabie – White River – Nelspruit (140km) Stage 3: Nelspruit – Kaapmuiden – Barberton – Nelspruit (132km)

Alberton bring silwer huis toe

www.iccnews.com Faf du Plessis led the Proteas to a 52-run victory over Bangladesh in their first T20 match on Sunday. JP Duminy and Rilee Rossouw also contributed with the bat to set South Africa’s total at 148/4. The Protea bowlers delivered macnificent bowling by getting rid of Bangladesh for 96 in only 19 overs. It seems as if the Proteas are finding themselves in top form. “Both sides bowled spin really well today,” Rossouw said to the media after the match. “Luckily for us we bowled in the second innings and I thought that favoured us a little bit more.”

“We showed good skill and patience but all in all I thought both teams were good with spin,” Rilee Rossouw said. The 25-year-old also gave credit to Du Plessis for his guidance and leadership during their partnership. “Faf played an immaculate innings,” he said of the captain. “We lost two early wickets but he still took the game to them and played his natural attacking game. He led from the front, he never slowed down, he knuckled down and did the job for the team.” Don’t miss the second T20 match of the series which is taking place today (7 July). www.cricket.co.za
