Water being wasted and leaving residents frustrated
Sewerage leaks and water pipes have been neglected
On Monday morning, 25 February, Japie Greyling and Danie Theron Street in Alberante Ext 1 has experienced another water pipe burst and left residents with no water for almost a full day.
tame TIMES spoke to DA Ward Councillor of Ward 106, Bruna Haipel who said that the suburb is over 40 years old and that the problem in the Alberante area is that the soil is clay.
The water was streaming down the whole of Japie Greyling and Danie Theron Street which left residents frustrated.
“The Water department keeps on telling us that asbestos pipes get harder as they age but I know they get more brittle and once one leak is fixed, the pressure causes the next leak. We signed petitions and still nothing has been done for a long term fix,” added Haipel.
tame TIMES is aware that sewerage leaks and water pipes have been neglected and have not been repaired for more than 4 months now. Some residents complained that together with the water pipe bursts there has also been sewerage leaks and it has been for some time now.
An anonymous Alberante resident complained to tame TIMES that metro has done absolutely nothing and that they still expect high rates and taxes to be paid regardless of the persistent problem.
tame TIMES was informed that Hendrik Groenewald (Chief Area Engineer) from the Ekurhuleni Water Department has appointed consultant engineers to upgrade and replace the water lines in Danie Theron and Japie Greyling Street in Alberante. tame TIMES will be following up on more information.

A note from the
EDITOR Each month I become more and more concerned with our fuel prices increasing rand by rand. Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, just delivered his 2019 budget speech against the backdrop of a tough economy and an even tougher energy crisis. The biggest cost will again be felt by motorists who will be hit by a triple whammy: the fuel price levy, the Road Accident Fund levy and a Carbon Tax. According to Susan Steward from Budget Insurance, “On the whole, daily living will become more expensive this year, and consumers are going to feel the pinch when filling up their cars.” The fuel levy for petrol and diesel went up by 29 cents and 30 cents respectively. Doing research I learned that the Road Accident Fund levy went up by 5 cents per litre of fuel, despite the Minister saying the levy won’t cover the R215 billion liability. This comes into effect in April. A carbon fuel levy of 9 cents a litre on petrol and 10 cents on diesel will come into effect in June. In addition, a petrol price increase is expected in March (petrol is expected to rise by another 43 cents per litre, diesel by another 62 cents per litre). That means, by the middle of the year, motorists will be paying around R14,94 per litre of petrol and R14,22 per litre of diesel. A car with a 50 litre fuel tank will cost around R747 (petrol) and R711 (diesel). Looks like we will all have to start being innovative to battle these rising costs. Commuting to work with colleagues is a good idea and driving effectively to minimise petrol usage.
Alberton Lions welcome new members
Starting off the new year on a very positive note, the Alberton Lions Club inducted 4 new members. Lions President Ian King inducted the new members, with their sponsors standing by. The new Lions pledged their commitment to the organization and their community projects. The projects undertaken by the Alberton Lions in the community fall in line with the Lions Clubs International Centennial initiatives, namely: Vision,
Hunger, Diabetes, Pediatric cancer, and the Environment. The Alberton Lions Club will continue serving the less fortunate in our community, as they have done for the past 48 years. If anyone would like more information about Lions, or to enquire about becoming a member, Tammy du Plooy can be contacted on 0823717053

Three security guards were kidnapped
Three security guards were kidnapped before they were later dropped off on the highway early on Tuesday morning, 19 February after a failed break-in at the Alberton Lifestyle Centre. West Pack Lifestyle Alberton manager George Frade said when he arrived at work at about 6.30am, he heard that suspects had tried to break in at Baby and Company. “They then took (the security) guys hostage and dropped them off somewhere near Johannesburg and drove off.” Frade was unsure if the security guards were harmed as they were working the night shift and knocked off after they were freed. Graphite Security regional manager Marius Nel said five armed perpetrators tried to break in into the shop around 5am. The crime was foiled when security guards pressed the panic button. The suspects were armed with 9mm pistols and were carrying a bag with bolt cutters. They were driving a black Jeep Cherokee. “They (the security guards) were forced into the Jeep. “They failed to break into the shop and drove off as a local security company arrived. “The suspects managed to lose the tail of the security company and dropped the three guards off on the N3 near the N17 turn-off to Johannesburg.” Said Nel: “One of my guards was assaulted. He was hit with a pistol on his head.” The security guard has been admitted to Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton. The other two guards were physically unharmed.
Alberton Optometrist believes eye care can be your solution. Eye fatigue can make you feel exhausted and cause lack of concentration. It is a symptom of eye strain which occurs when the eyes get tired after performing a visual task for a lengthy period. Focusing on your computer, reading a book or driving long distances can cause eye strain which can result in tired or watery eyes, blurred vision and headaches. According to Zelda van Coller, owner and optometrist at Zelda van Coller Optometrists, the first step to treating any eye condition, is always getting an accurate diagnosis. During a comprehensive eye examination, an optometrist can put stress on your visual system and find out exactly where the problem lies. “Eye strain occurs when focusing for long periods and putting strain on your eyes, this doesn’t always cause eye injuries, but to increase eye comfort, we advise our patients to make sure they are getting professional eye care and wearing Soos julle almal seker weet, was ek nog altyd vreeslik bang vir enige iets wat kleiner as ‘n piering is en meer as vier bene het. Maar die wat nog ook meer as twee oë het, het my histeries gemaak. Ek het altyd net ‘n gil gegee, dan kom Gysie ingestorm met ‘n houer om die dingetjie buitentoe te vat.

the correct prescriptions.” “Your solution to tired eyes can be as simple as recommended eye exercises, eye drops or getting the correct lens prescription.” “Tired eyes can have an enormous impact on your lifestyle and needs to be treated. In some cases, tired eyes and eye strain can be an indication of other underlying eye care conditions and needs to be taken care of in order to prevent further eye strain and long-term irreversible vision loss.” Van Coller says that there are various symptoms of tired eyes that needs treatment. She urges patients to make an appointment and get their eyes tested if experiencing the Maar so ‘n rukkie terug toe stuur my seun vir my ‘n skakel na ‘n Facebook blad wat gaan oor al hierdie ‘creepy crawlies’. onds and rest your eyes. Don’t stare into bright light and make sure to protect your eyes from glare. If you feel that you are struggling to see in very dim light it can put a lot of strain on your eyes. Try to do activities that will relieve stress and get a good night’s sleep. Don’t expose your eyes to dry moving air from fans, heaters and air-conditioning systems Make sure to see an optometrist when you have dry eyes or vision that needs correction “Although eyestrain doesn’t always have serious implications, it can be aggravating and unpleasant. Eye strain can make you feel tired, reduce your ability to concentrate and prevent you from being productive. Most cases of tired eyes can be treated easily – why wait if you can sort it out today,” concludes van Coller.

National talent competition
BEGINS IT’S SEARCH The I sing National Talent Search’s main objective is to discover new talent in singing, dancing, writing, acting and music in South Africa. tame TIMES has collaborated with founder of I Sing National Talent Search, Leigh-Ann Hill to search for fresh local talent. During an interview with Leigh-Ann she sadly said that her inspiration was fueled by the tragic passing of her best friend due to breast cancer in 2018. “I got involved with singing competitions through cancer fundraisers. Someone inspired me to do what I love and what I am passionate about. Our pastors at 3C Ministries preached about vision and that uplifted me to pray about 2019 and
where I believe where God wants to take me. Something ignited in my heart to start the I sing National T a l e n t Search,” said LeighAnne. On Saturday, 16 February, the I Sing National Talent Search competition took place in Alberton City. The judges on the panel were Garin Joemath (tame TIMES Editor) along with Bertha le Roux-Wahl (Emma in 7de Laan, Gaynor in Binnelanders and Radio Pulpit 657 presenter) and Philip Green (local DJ and Singer). The day turned out a success with locals, young and old that participated in the competition. Stunning prizes such as gift and food vouchers, hotel accommodation vouchers and song recordings were handed over to winners from sponsors Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, Placecol New Redruth Village, Rocky Peak Spur, Woolworths New Redruth Village and Alberton City. There is more in store as tame TIMES along with LeighAnn will be hosting a I sing for Jesus I can sing Gospel on
02, 09 and 23 March 2019 at Copa in Midrand where you can stand a chance to win your share of R50 000 in cash and in prizes. The judges for I can sing for Jesus I can Sing Gospel are Eon De Bruin from XrossBeat Media, Bertha le Roux-Wahl and Garin Joemath. Entry fees for Juniors aged between 6-12: R30, Ages 12-18: R30 and those aged 18 and up: R50. Leigh-Ann would like to thank the sponsors of these wonderful competitions: tame TIMES, Eon De Bruin XrossBeat Media, Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, Placecol New Redruth Village, Rocky Peak Spur, Woolworths New Redruth Village, Fm Gospel Internet Radio, Alberton City, Angelique Bentley, Mr. Bernard Venter, COPA South Africa in Midrand, Impact Radio and Tawney Eagle Spur. Any other sponsors are encouraged to get involved. “My expectation is to develop new talent in South Africa as well as to get the right sponsors and brand partners on board to make the competition a nationwide success,” added Leigh-Ann.

Mazibuko’s victory a

TRIBUTE TO HIS DAD South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) and the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation (EEFF). I would’ve loved for him to see me win,” Mazibuko says as he reflects on his victory.
“...I would’ve loved for him to see me win,” Sometimes, the distance between the hole and a putt for victory in this game cannot be measured in feet alone. In the case of Makhetha Mazibuko, the five feet he had to make birdie on the 18th hole at Modderfontein Golf Club and win his first professional title – the Race to QSchool #6 Modderfontein on the IGT Challenge Tour – last Wednesday doesn’t begin to tell the story of a golfer who wished there was one specific person next to that 18th green to see him win. “My father. He passed away when I was 15. It was around the time I was with the
“It was painful losing him. My mom was there to make sure I was ok, but it was very hard.”
It explains why Mazibuko was so grateful to receive the many messages of support from his fellow golfers in the Gary Player Class, the Sunshine Tour’s talent identification programme that builds on the work done by the SAGDB and EEFF to develop talent in the game, and then further helps these players to make a success of their professional careers with significant support from corporate giants such as Investec, BMW, PwC, SuperSport and Virgin Active as well as from within the golf industry through The World of Golf and The Pro Shop. “You know, the other players in the Gary Player Class gave me so much support and sent me so many messages. It was great. And I’m very happy to be a winner in the
Class. I’d really like to thank the SAGDB, the EEFF and Selwyn Nathan of the Sunshine Tour and all our Gary Player Class sponsors for giving me the support they have. It takes some of the stress out of your game.”
Mazibuko has played his way through the obvious financial stress that comes with trying to make your way in the extremely competitive world of professional golf. He and his brother, who he used to follow to the golf course and practice with when he was younger, also support his mother financially. And he arrived at Modderfontein Golf Club this past week feeling the pressure from a game that wasn’t where he wanted it to be. “I’ve been struggling on the Sunshine Tour, but also trying to stay patient and see it as a learning curve,” he says. Part of that process was taking the lessons from his playoff defeat for the 2017 Eye of Africa PGA Championship. Mazibuko played sublime golf that week and ended up in a playoff with Erik van Rooyen,
now a European Tour campaigner, and Dylan Frittelli, who owns a PGA Tour card. He eventually lost to Van Rooyen. “The playoff defeat in the Eye of Africa PGA Championship taught me that every shot in this game is important. I had that mind-set in this IGT Challenge Tour event. I was one shot behind with two holes to go so I knew I had to birdie the 17th and 18th to win. I made the birdie on 17 to tie for the lead. Then the pin on 18 was tucked back left so it wasn’t an easy shot in. I hit it to five feet and then I made the putt to win by one shot.”
“The win is going to give me a lot of confidence. My focus now will be on the Limpopo Championship (at Euphoria Golf Estate and Hydro in March). I’ve been struggling a bit off the tee and that’s put pressure on me because I can’t take advantage of the par fives. So that will be my main focus there. But hopefully this win is the beginning of something good.”
Young footballers can develop their skills
The Elspark United Football Academy was established in 2012. The club has found its home at the Elsburg Sports Complex and caters to players from disadvantaged backgrounds. It strives to teach children, from six to 17 years old, more about the beautiful game of football. The club has recently made the decision to intensify its efforts to reach and train young footballers at grass-root level, and will launch
bi-monthly football skills development clinics. The club is inviting both girls and boys to get involved in the clinics, which will launch in February and continue bi-monthly until November. The clinics will be held on the second and third Sunday of the month at the club’s home grounds from 8am until 11am. A nominal fee will be charged per child. For more information, or to get involved call Muzi Shangase on 078 662 0599.
