INSIDE Creative Academy opens campus 3
By: Garin Joemath
We recently held an interview with 19-year-old Jordan Morais, a developing tennis player from Alberton. Jordan wishes to return to Lisbon, Portugal, to unleash his full potential at the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour. Jordan started playing tennis at the age of six. “When I turned 16, unexpected events led to my parents’ separation. This had a huge effect in my life, as me and my brother had to be taken out of school and participate in tournaments declined, leading up to the proposed move to Portugal,” said Jordan The nature of his family situation also left a matter of uncertainty regarding the financial implications of training in Portugal. “In an attempt not to let the situation get to me I focused on improving my skills in preparation for going to Portugal, whether I was going or not,” Jordan said. Jordan was unable to go to Portugal but with the support of his family, coach and physical trainer Ronel Beukes, he kept pushing. In 2016, a year later, Jordan got the opportunity he has always dreamed of. Despite financial constraints and through the support of people close to him, Jordan went to Portugal for two weeks. During these two weeks he would play trials to get his spot. The result of the trials would determine whether Jordan could return in 2017. Jordan’s coaches were astonished by his performance. The coaches he worked with in Portugal were impressed with his attitude and dedication and he was invited back for 2017. The coaches told Jordan he could be playing in the ITF tournaments

within six months. In the meantime, Jordan is participating in tournaments in South Africa where he is performing on an excellent level. Jordan said to tame TIMES that he wants to go back and unleash his full potential. Help Jordan reach his dream of becoming one of the great sports stars of South Africa. The cost of training is upwards
of 1 000 Euros (approximately R16 000) a month. Jordan is unable to cover the costs on his own. For more information on how you can help Jordan feel free to contact his coach Etienne De Wet on 071 564 7722. Any contribution will be most welcome.

A letter to the Editor
A note fromt the
EDITOR On the eve of my 3rd year as a tame TIMES employee I started reflecting and realised that I never really took the time to introduce myself properly as the Editor. My name Garin Joemath, born and raised in Johannesburg. I am currently studying BA Communication Science through University of South Africa, and majoring in anthropology, communication and marketing. I started off as a freelance journalist in August 2016 at tame TIMES and provided a fresh approach to local news by working with local residents in the Ekurhuleni district and Johannesburg. I am a newspaper editor for 3 tame TIMES local newspapers and believe that it is all because of the Grace of God through His Son Jesus. I work along with great female-led organisations, local churches, social working NPO’s, local schools, SA’s most prominent pageants and much more. I believe that each individual has a story to tell and that his purpose to share an individual’s story.
Alberton resident speaks about POST-OFFICE-APOCALYPSE Dear Editor I decided to take advantage of the December period to mentally prepare myself for the queues and an overly humid post office, and just renew my license disc before the boys in blue flag me down again… so Attempt 1 began. I arrived, not a soul in sight, shocked and excited, I made my way to the counter to find a hand-written note stuck to the glass partition “License disc renewal system offline”. I was informed that in Alberton there was only one post office online and issuing discs. In good spirits of the holiday period, I bit my tongue and moved on. Arriving at a busy shopping centre for Attempt 2 - the post office tucked away in a corner, a brief sigh and I hurried through the heat and inside the red and blue sin-bin. Total chaos, no definite
queue, people hustling around in circles dazed and confused clutching their ohso-important pens. I have a great deal of patience, but I lack patience for an unorganised system. I left the panicked holiday makers to their demise. Attempt 3, only a handful of brave standing in-line facing the uninterested staff - I arrived at mid-day to find a “teller closed” sign placed on the floor behind a
gentleman’s feet - they had decided that this is the last person that they will serve for the day. A nervous giggle followed by a twitch of the eye and I exited. Attempt 4, after allowing myself recovery and mental preparation, I returned, the staffs’ lifeless glares greeting me upon arrival. Alas I was met with the diabolical piece of paper…” License disk renewal system offline”, my breaking point has been met and I have lost interest in this process. I understand that there may be easier ways to complete this process without the frustration, but majority of us rely on a service the post office cannot deliver efficiently or not at all. I will be sending all my future fines to the post office and they can be responsible for the bills, until then… I will be practicing my photoshop skills. -Shawn Brett-

Alberton’s Zelda van Coller Edenglen High Hosts shares importance of eye care Annual Interhouse Gala
More people are realising the importance of eye care and making sure that they are getting their eyes tested for the new year, ensuring that they give themselves the best shot at great vision this year. “With more than 200 people who booked eye tests at our practice in January 2019 we are seeing a shift in people making eye care priority. Your eyes are your windows to the world and should take priority, especially with the increased number of hours we spend staring at screens” says Zelda van Coller, Owner and Optometrist at Zelda van Coller Optometrists Dynamic Vision. She recommends going for an eye test when your eyes are red, dry, itchy or if you are seeing spots or light flashes. If you have diabetes or other health conditions that can influence your eye health, have difficulty seeing when driving, experiencing eye strain,
headaches and/or blurred vision after screen time or holding reading material further away, you should get your eyes checked. “Good eyesight plays a significant role in quality of life and it is recommended to go for an eye test at least every twelve months,” concludes van Coller. For more information on general eye care, please visit the Zelda van Coller website on www.optomzelda.co.za.
Edenglen High School recently hosted their annual senior interhouse gala at Edenvale public pool. Learners were excited to get in the pool and aimed for glory for their house. The best overall swimmer for the boys
was Joshua Whittam in Grade 10 and best overall swimmer for girls was Danielle Ormarad in Grade 10. The competition was fierce but Bismarck left the other houses in their wake and claimed victory.
5 ways unnecessary idling damages your car In winter months, many drivers still idle their cars to warm up the engine despite driving the latest car models. Some drivers also believe that idling doesn’t use a lot of fuel and that it’s better for the car’s engine to idle than to restart. Over the years, there have been many inherited beliefs about car idling that have influenced our driving habits, however with modern cars they are nothing more than outdated myths. Idling isn’t harmful to your car but excessive and unnecessary idling can have a negative impact. Here’s why excessive idling damages your car: 1. Idling in cold weather harms your engine: Before the 1980s, car engines relied on carburettors to keep the engine going. Idling was essential to warm up the carburettor before driving. Today’s cars use electronic fuel injection systems that, together with more sophisticated engines, alternators and leading start/stop battery
technology, make idling unnecessary. The best and fastest way to properly warm up your car’s engine is to start driving gently for the first few minutes. 2. Idling wastes petrol: A common myth is that idling uses less fuel than starting your car. The truth is that 10 to 30 seconds of idling burns more fuel than restarting your car. For every two minutes you idle, you could have driven 1.5 kilometers. Save more fuel by turning off the engine whenever you’re going to stand still for more than 10 seconds. 3. Idling drains your battery: Your car battery powers all the electronics in your vehicle and needs to be recharged by the alternator. When your car is idling, the battery charges slower and takes more strain from electronics. Fortunately, Raylite batteries, exclusively available at Battery Centre, offer greater power reserves, faster recharge times and twice the lifecycle of standard car batteries. Get your battery checked for free at a Battery Centre near you to ensure you never run out of power.
4. Idling burns up oil: The moment you start your car, engine oil gets circulated and used. Idling for long periods will therefore use more oil and you’ll need to refill your oil more often. 5. Idling causes engine damage: While idling, the fuel in your car is only partially burned. Long periods of idling can produce a buildup of fuel residue and cause engine damage. Keep in mind that fuel is also an excellent thinner and cleaner, which means it can also wash away oil that keeps the engine components lubricated. There are more than 12 million registered vehicles in South Africa, and if
everyone cut down on unnecessary idling, we would significantly reduce pollution. Idling is history, the future of driving is start/stop.

On Saturday, 12 January, Creative Academy celebrated the grand opening of their 3rd campus. The ceremony was celebrated with staff, parents and members. The morning started with a blessing and prayer by Pastor Justus Katzke from 3C Ministries who prayed for protection over the school and families. Principal of Creative Academy, Tarryn Botha also conducted a presentation of welcoming each and every child and family to be part of Creative Academy. Liezel Blom COE and founder of SA Teacher was the guest speaker who shared her insight. The core of her message was that Maths is the centre of learning to solve problems. Later the morning an inspiring balloon
ceremony was held where different coloured balloons were released with a blessing attached for each child that came through the doors. The colours of the balloons represented different elements: Red= Love, Green= New beginnings, Yellow= Friendship, White= Purity and Innocence, Orange= Creativity, Purple= Confidence, Blue= Peace. After the balloons were released, babies were taken to the baby class under the amazing teacher Mable Hulley and right after a ribbon was cut to open the doors of the new campus. tame TIMES wishes Creative Academy all the best with their new campus.

VIDEO OF FIGHT AT HOËRSKOOL PRESIDENT GOES VIRAL
The school has set down a disciplinary hearing for Thursday, 31 January. Hoërskool President in Ridgeway, in the South of Johannesburg has suspended four learners after a video of a fight surfaced on social media on Thursday, 24 January. TimesLIVE reports confirmed that the fight happened on Tuesday and the learners were suspended the same day. In the video of two schoolboys, one boy punches another boy in the head about six times before the beaten pupil falls down. After the fight, four learners come to the aid of the beaten boy and help him to his feet. “No one knows what caused the fight,” Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Friday during a visit to the school in Ridgeway. tame TIMES understands that Lesufi feared the video might become a racism issue because one learner is white and the other is black.
“I’m very reluctant to use race and I’m also reluctant to enter the domain of who is right and who is wrong,” said Lesufi. At the start of the video, the beaten learner is holding a belt above his head. Lesufi said according to preliminary information “the victim was the one that first attacked.” “The report says the victim took the belt off prior to the video being taken.” The school has set down a disciplinary hearing for Thursday, 31 January. “We need to get to the source of the fight,” Lesufi said. If the learners are found guilty after the hearing, “they must find space somewhere, not in our schools in Gauteng,” said Lesufi. “We can’t transfer one problem to another school. We are very firm. We are not denying them their rights,” concluded Lesufi.
