COMMUNITY IN AGONY AS DISASTER STRIKES HOËRSKOOL DRIEHOEK Teachers and pupils anticipated an exciting day on Friday, 1 February, with visitors expected for an inter-school sports event. Instead, Hoërskool Driehoek was struck by tragedy. A structure collapsed at the Hoërskool Driehoek School killing three students, aged between 13 and 18 years. The deceased children were identified as Roydon Olckers, Jandre Steyn and Marli Currie. It was confirmed by the Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi that a fourth learner named Marnus Nagel passed away on Sunday, 3 February. In a tweet, Lesufi sent his condolences to the families and said they could count on the department’s support. “We can officially confirm that 26 learners were affected and are still hospitalised”. Lesufi told the news conference at the school: “It was heartbreaking to see our learners crying.” Lesufi said the fourth child’s condition worsened on Saturday and he was in and out of theatre frequently. He said the school’s leadership would visit the family on Sunday morning and that a funeral and memorial service would be arranged soon.
“It’s indeed a sad day for us,” said MEC for Eduction in Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi, who rushed to the high school in Vanderbijlpark when the first alert came in at 8:10am. “A pathway connecting the admin block and classes collapsed,” Lesufi said. The MEC thanked parents and community members for their swift intervention and assistance to pupils.

Lift at Silverkroon still not functioning
“
On Wednesday, 30 January, Ward Councillor, Bruna Haipel along with Silverkroon’s elderly residents met in order to protest against the fact that the lift in the old age home is still not functional.
The walkway caved in at the school on Friday while the learners were making their way to class after assembly. I personally feel sad about the incident and we as tame TIMES pray for each and every family member that lost their loved ones and for each and every learner that is hospitalised. We urge community members to pray with us for the families and friends of Hoërskool Driehoek. The Gauteng Department of Education is expected to receive a report on the structural assessment of Hoërskool Driehoek soon. tame TIMES will also be keeping you updated with further information.

Last week was a sad week for our communities and country after hearing the tragic news of the disaster at Hoërskool Driehoek.
broke again in December 2018. The elderly residents, most of whom are very frail, are now forced to use the stairs because the lift is still out of order. This is an untenable situation which could lead to dire consequences for the aged residents of Silverkroon if not rectified soon. On Wednesday, 30 January, Ward Councillor, Bruna Haipel along with Silverkroon’s elderly residents met in order to protest against the fact that the lift in the old age home is still not functional. The concerned residents and their families are complaining that the Alberton municipality is not helping them by repairing the lift. Haipel and others state that they have made the municipality aware of their grave concerns but their pleas have been ignored.

RIP ROYDON OLCKERS HOËRSKOOL DRIEHOEK EMPLOYEE SHARES TORMENT An employee at Hoërskool Driehoek said she was tormented by the images of the falling concrete slab which lead to the death of three pupils. According to news24 the employee could not be identified. She witnessed the tragedy soon after 8:00 when pupils left the assembly hall to return to class. “The injured pupils were lying near the pathway, while the bodies of the three deceased were trapped underneath the concrete slab”, said the employee. She added that while walking down the kitchen towards the bridge she saw it collapsing. “ I heard a loud bang and I thought it was
a ceiling board falling over my children. When I went closer, I noticed that it was not ceiling board but a concrete slab”, said the employee. She further added that the childrens screams are still lingering in her mind. “They cried and pleaded for help as they were fighting for their lives. There was nothing I could do. I am glad that a group of men responded quickly and saved the lives of some children. I am hurting inside and don’t know what to say anymore” added the employee. tame Times send our heartfelt condolences to the parents, family and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy.
A family member has described one of the children who died at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark on Friday as “beautiful child of God”, reports Netwerk24. Roydon Olckers, 17, was the school’s star athlete. He was among the three pupils who died when a concrete slab above a walkway bridging two buildings at the school collapsed on Friday morning.
Family member Nicky Snyman broke the news of Roydon’s death to his mother Sharlene. Jan Toerien, a teacher at the school, told Netwerk24 that Olckers’ had to be identified by his huge calf muscles. Snyman said Olcker’s father Donovan and his mother were devastated at the loss of their eldest child.

NO RISK OF STRUCTURAL MOTHER GIVES BIRTH COLLAPSE OF ROADWAY ON PAVEMENT SUPPORT PILLAR
Management of O. R. Tambo International Airport confirmed on Monday, 4 February that a certified structural engineer has examined cracks on a support pillar of the elevated departures roadway at the airport and has determined that there is no risk of a structural collapse. The inspection of support pillar number 23 was carried out last Tuesday 29 January 2019 by the structural engineer and the airport’s maintenance engineering team. This pillar is located by the domestic terminal entrance/exit on the lower road ring and provides support to the upper road ring of the airport. The defects were classified by the structural engineer as cracking of the mortar inside the bridge expansion gap. The structural engineer determined that the cracks were caused by the expansion and contraction movement of the bridge deck on the pillar head.
Under normal circumstances, the expansion joint gap is free of plaster. However, during construction this pillar expansion joint was plastered to neaten the appearance work area. Adjacent pillars with open expansion gaps can be seen in the image below. The recommendations of the structural engineer were to: • Remove all the loose concrete and mortar from the bridge deck pillar head; • Finish the bridge ends with mortar; and • Apply wet to dry epoxy to the exposed surface of the pillar head, then shutter the pier and pour in flowable concrete. The remedial work commenced as per the engineer’s recommendations. The current status of the remedial work can be seen in the image below. The maintenance team is awaiting setting of the mortar before painting.
Living their ethos “You are Not Alone”, Stepping Stone Hospice’s retail supervisor Chris Nel was on hand to assist a woman who had given birth on the pavement in front of their shop in Fore Street in New Redruth on Thursday, 31 January. Nel acted quickly to avert near tragedy as the baby needed lifesaving assistance. This was Stepping Stone Hospice retail supervisor, first experience as a Level 3 First Aider. When he saw the mother struggling to walk, Nel jumped into action. “While I was watching her, the baby just seemed to drop out,” he explained. “This is the first time I helped at a birth. There were a few tense moments before the ambulance arrived with the little one stopping breathing and I had to resuscitate her. I can honestly say that this was
an incredibly humbling experience,” said Nel. Stepping Stone Hospice reported that it is a blessing that Chris was on hand to aid the mother, Felda Ngubeni and assist the baby. Brenda Peach, retail manager of Stepping Stone Hospice, made sure the mother was comfortable whilst Chris and the paramedics from Med Help Emergency Services and National Paramedics cared for the baby. The mother and new born were taken to the Clinton Hospital where they were stabilised and transferred to Natalspruit Hospital. Family members of the mother promised to bring Stepping Stone Hospice news of how Felda and her new born girl are doing.

DON’T LET CRIMINALS CATCH YOU UNAWARE Fidelity ADT recently carried out some additional patrols in the Alberton area to raise visibility and proactively look at ways for enhancing security in the area. Linda Goodenough, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT says it is often the small details that leave us vulnerable to crime in our homes. The following trends were observed: • Front doors and garage doors left open. This is an open invitation to criminals. Most garages have a side door that leads into your house and this can be an obvious weak area. An open garage also gives criminals time to scout for valuable items such as vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, gardening tools and leisure equipment. Tip: Ensure all doors visible from the street are kept closed at all times Leaving dustbins out the day before collection. Dustbin day is a weekly routine for most homeowners. Leaving dustbins out the
Twenty suspects arrested by Primrose SAPS
Primrose SAPS arrested 20 suspects between 24 and 30 January. This achievement was made public in the latest arrest statistics released by the station. The accused were charged with a number
of offences which include: Assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, domestic violence, theft, possession of suspected stolen property, illegal possession of rhino horns, driving under the influence of alcohol, dealing in liquor without a licence, rape, possession of drugs and pointing of a firearm. The Primrose SAPS station commander, Col Albertina Vesi, thanked everyone who contributed to the successful arrests. Most of the suspects appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where their cases were postponed for various reasons, while others paid admission of guilt fines at the station and were released.
Police are still hunting two prisoners
tame TIMES understands that police are still hunting for two prisoners who escaped from the high court in Johannesburg on Friday morning, 1 February 2019. Andisile Ncanyelo (27) and Njabulo ThokozaniKhumalo (29) were both scheduled to appear in court for separate cases of murder when they escaped. According
to police a third person tried to escape with them but was caught before he could leave the court building. Police have released two pictures of the escapees. While the police don’t know if they are armed, they said they were considered dangerous, and anyone who saw them should not approach, but should call the police immediately.
night before encourages dustbin diggers the day and night before. Tip: Only take your dustbin out the day of collection and on the day, ensure your domestic or gardener closes the gate immediately behind him/her when doing this weekly routine. You never know who is watching. • Leaving garden equipment on the pavement. We observed on three occasions gardeners leaving the gardening equipment on the side walk while they went to the back of the premises to fetch something, or went out to lunch. Tip: Remind all domestic and gardening staff about safety and the importance of remaining vigilant at all times • Leaving curtain open at night. It is so important to close curtains at night. Many homes are visible from the street giving criminals a good look at what potential assets are in the home.
Tip: Always close all curtains as soon as you need to put inside lights on. • Distracted when you arrive home. When you arrive home it is important you are not distracted by social media or your radio when you approach your driveway. You need to be especially aware of driveway robberies. Tip: Remove all distractions as soon as you turn into your road • Not checking your gate is closed when leaving home. Tip: When you leave, just wait a minute or two to see that your automatic gate has closed behind you and nobody has run in whilst the gate is busy closing. “These simple safeguards can make all the difference. Criminals know the tricks of their trade so it makes good sense to avoid the small things that can so easily trip us up,” concludes Goodenough
Five suspects arrested
The Brackendowns and Elsburg SAPS along with Fidelity ADT’s special reaction unit conducted a blitz on crime in the two areas on Friday, 18 January and made five arrests. The message of zero tolerance towards crime was loud and clear. In Alberton a suspect dealing in marijuana was arrested, as was a suspect involved in theft of a motor vehicle. The Elsburg team went to the Dekema Mall in Wadeville where three suspects were arrested, one whom was on a ‘want-
ed’ list regarding a truck hijacking in the area. The other two were arrested for carrying weapons. Linda Goodenough, community development manager at Fidelity ADT, said working with Capt Foord from Brackendowns SAPS and Lt Col Opperman from Elsburg SAPS was inspiring. “They have a no-nonsense attitude. It was an honour working with these two station heads and their dedicated officers. We will continue to do so going forward,” said Goodenough.

COMEDY SHOW:
Marc Lottering brings to life his most beloved alter ego
action in Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve
Everyone has an Aunty Merle in their life! Having drawn inspiration from his own mother for this character over 20 years ago, Marc Lottering brings to life his most beloved alter ego, Aunty Merle Abrahams, for the first time on a Johannesburg stage. Hailing from Belgravia Road in Athlone, Aunty Merle sashays onto the stage at the Mandela at Joburg Theatre from 1 February to 3 March 2019 for a limited season run. High drama unfolds as Merle’s daughter, Abigail, announces her engagement to her boyfriend, Alan. As Merle puts it: “He’s a good looking white chap!” But it’s never smooth-sailing in the world of musicals when Abigail’s twisted and corrupt ex, Denver Paulse – who holds a dodgy top job with the SABC - is determined to get her back – and if not, threatens to reveal a very dark secret which is bound to tear the lovers apart. “This show brings people together by merging music and comedy with South African flavour. The audience will leave feeling love and warmth, with a craving for lemon meringue.” Written by Marc Lottering and directed by Lara Foot, the musical comedy boasts a talented South African cast including Tracey-Lee Oliver as Abigail, Paul du
Toit as Alan, Tankiso Mamabolo as Lydia and Loukmaan Adams as Denver Paulse; with the rest of the stellar cast including Royston Stoffels, Gina Shmukler, Adrian Galley, Carmen Maarman, Zandile Madliwa, Sizwesandile Mnisi, Anzio September, Crystal Finck and Tashreeq de Villiers - accompanied by a live 8-piece band. Twenty-two original songs, with lyrics by Marc Lottering and Tarryn Lamb; musical direction by Alistair Izobel and choreography by Grant Van Ster, have earned the cast thunderous standing ovations. The show has received four Fleur du Cap nominations and has come off its third sell-out season in Cape Town. Because Aunty Merle is all about sharing the love, she’s offering patrons a 20% discount on tickets purchased for shows between 1 and 7 February. Performances are Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8pm, with matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm. The show is suitable for all ages (no under 3’s). You can secure your tickets through one of these platforms: visit www. joburgtheatre.com or call Box Office on 0861 670 670 ; via www.webtickets. co.za; as well as webtickets counters at Pick ‘n Pay outlets.
As part of World Wetlands Day, AfriForum cleaned up the wetlands in the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve on 2 February 2019. The recent heavy rain showers washed down heaps of rubbish in the stormwater channels, which was subsequently carried off by the influent right into the wetlands. Approximately ten bags of litter were picked up during the action. “Wetlands are of the utmost importance, seeing as they function like natural dams. During heavy rainfall and thunderstorms wetlands absorb the water and then slowly release it again during the course of the year. Without wetlands this waste water is thus washed away immediately and goes lost. Wet-
AfriForum would like to encourage the community to become involved at the organisation’s initiatives that are aimed at looking after the environment in the area and also keeping it clean. “More than 50% of South Africa’s wetlands have already been destroyed or show signs of decline. We as people are responsible for preserving our wetlands and to subsequently ensure that our essential ecosystems function optimally,” concludes De Klerk.

Standing in solidarity
Without a doubt, a forever trending topic on South African’s lips… the fuel price. The mere mention of it and an instant hatred for the country is brought about. With inflation being taken into consideration, how much does this affect us? I took a look into the average fuel budget for the everyday Joburger going about a monthly commute and compared it to how this would have differed 10 years ago. Yes, there are many factors to take into consideration, but just bear with me on this one, I have a basic point to make!
On Monday, 4 February the learners from Alberton High School came together to implement their initiative by wearing purple and yellow ribbons, to show their support for Hoërskool Drie-
lands also have the ability to decrease the intension of floods and droughts via the regulation of stormflow,” says Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s Project Coordinator for Environmental Affairs.
hoek. Learners from Alberton High School gives full support.
The year is 2009, and you’re paying R7.76 per litre when filling your 45 litre tank – R346.50 for a full tank – and you fill your car on average four times a month, costing you R1 346.05 of your monthly budget. Now compare this to modern day pric-
es at R14.01 per litre – pricing is based on 95 unleaded – your monthly fuel budget is now up to R2 521.80. Over 10 years it’s a difference of R1 137.60… now that the mind numbing figures are out the way here is my point: We love to blame others for our financial woes. I do not deny that inflation in expenses and lack of increase in income is a problem, but our outlooks and habits are. We refuse to take responsibility for our own over spending. So what if the fuel prices increase by R1.00 in a month? You wouldn’t even bat an eyelid if the vodka soda you ordered for the 12th time cost the equivalent of a full tank. Take ownership for your actions and form some healthy habits! If you cannot control a situation, control your actions and thoughts towards it.

Thabisa Mkhwanazi, KFC Public Affairs Director says, “The KFC bucket is synonymous with bringing friends and families together in sharing finger lickin good experiences, which is what inspired us to take the iconic KFC bucket to one of our nation’s most loved sports. The KFC T20 International Series serves as a wonderful opportunity for KFC to not only affirm its commitment to serving everyone’s favourite chicken but to also be part of the best cricketing action in South Africa. We look forward to bringing fans a little closer to the cricketing action and their heroes through the #KFCBigBucket.”
