Alberton residents concerned about ongoing water leak
04 June 2019, Week Volume 09, 23 May 23 2017, Week 21
Residents of Alberton have resorted to social media to inform the City of Ekurhuleni of a massive water leak on the corner of Jaqueline and Swartkoppies Road. Concerned residents are complaining that the water leak has been in the unmaintained condition for over 5 years. On Tuesday, 28 May a meeting was called between the City of Ekurhuleni’s Water and Sanitation department, Afriforum Alberton, the media and some community members regarding the issue. tame TIMES understands that it is a substantial leak that has been going on for a very long time and a huge amount of water is continually being lost. The Department, through Mr. Hendrik Groenewald, the chief engineer at the Department of Water and Sanitation in Ekurhuleni gave the attendees a detailed briefing of the scope of work involved in such an operation, as well as the challenges faced in the process. Mr Groenewald has also denied any reports indicating a shortage of spares as well as the reports of electric cables in the water, and has asked that the community please verify such claims before posting on social media in order to avoid
unnecessary panic, through the spread of untruths and unverified information. The department has given the assurance that the problem is being attended to and although it is difficult to furnish exact time tables, the community should see an improvement in the leak within approximately 4 weeks and a complete repair within the next 12 weeks. The aspect of safety has also been raised at the meeting in regards to the very deep holes as well as open valves in an unguarded and unsupervised area and the department has also given the community the assurance that they will look into that aspect as well. The Local Afriforum Branch as well as
the community members indicated their appreciation towards the department’s willingness to engage with them and although the meeting was to the point and sometimes robust, it is seen as very constructive and they believe the Department’s commitment to solving the problem to be genuine. tame TIMES will however monitor the progress and the process and should it be necessary engage with the department again. Mr. Groenewald has indicated the departments willingness to engage and to supply the community with relevant and up to date information should it be required.

Mental health awareness event empowers community
Harley is in need of help Two year-old Harley was tragically caught in a fire accident earlier this year where she sustained 2nd degree burns to 20% of her body, face, stomach, right arm and hand, as well as her right leg. She was taken care of in the paediatric intensive care unit at the Clinton Hospital (Alberton) and the medical bills have climbed drastically.
A successful community outreach event, hosted by the Recovery Good News Centre and Akeso Alberton psychiatric hospital, was held in Ennerdale on Saturday, 25 May. The event aimed to dispel myths and misconceptions around mental health issues while empowering the community with information about the professional resources available to help individuals and their families requiring treatment and support. Pictured at the event were community activist, Dereleen James; Department of Education educational psychologist, Eleanor Bosch; specialist psychiatrist at Akeso Alberton, Dr Bokang Letlotlo; psychiatric intake clinician at Akeso, Megan Hosking; recovery specialist, coach and counsellor, Cherforice Absalon; and Akeso Alberton hospital manager, Gathlyn Watkins. The event, held at the Recovery Good News Centre in Mid Ennerdale, was well attended by members of the community. They were given an opportunity to ask questions and engage with the expert speakers about personal or family struggles with mental health. Those attending the event were also given the option to complete a self-assessment
5 2 779 82 44 0 l e T
survey, which they could discuss with the mental health professionals. “We often find that when people do not have an understanding of mental health, they may not recognise symptoms of mental problems in themselves or their loved ones. Many people go through difficult times and may require expert support, particularly when the problems cause disruption to daily functioning at work or in their family and social relationships. This is no different to consulting a doctor when one has an illness affecting the body,” Hosking explains. “Too often, when people are unaware that help is available they turn to drugs or alcohol to seek temporary relief, but this can lead to addiction and the many complex problems that go with substance abuse. Our message to the community was that help is available, and there is no shame in reaching out when support is needed. “It was a day filled with spirit and hope, and provided a wonderful opportunity to engage with community members about their experiences, and to share some of the options available for treatment and support for those in need,” Hosking concluded
Dear Potential Donor We are currently in the midst of arranging a fundraiser for Harley to get her and her family the help that they need and truly deserve. Her parents Tammy and Rhyan have been knocked down quite badly as a result of Harley’s accident but they have never faltered in taking the utmost care of her needs. They have been two of the strongest people we know through all of this. This is where your help comes in, should you feel you would like to donate to Harley’s cause we have a Facebook page where you will be able to find her clickndonate link or should you require banking details they will follow at the end of the tiny portfolio we have put together. The decision is yours whether to help once-off or on an ongoing basis (Harley will keep needing treatment and to visit specialists for at least the next two years minimum, and even that is not a guarantee). As we all know doctors and specialist visits can be extremely pricey.
Help is not just needed financially. The family would also appreciate if you or your company could allow us a donation box, or would like to sponsor the purchase of nappies etc this will be welcomed with open arms. Should you wish to help us in any way contact details will be provided to you. We appeal to your better nature, all we ask is that you help us spread Harley’s story (Could you imagine this was your baby?) so that she may get the help that she so desperately needs. Our goal in the long run will also be to help other burn victims in the same situation as Harley and her family. Thank you and kind regards Harley and Family

Brackendowns’ first house in Fire leaves state of disrepair Mayberry Park home in ashes
Concerned community members have reported that the first house built in Brackendowns is deteriorating fast due to lack of maintenance. Last week tame TIMES went to meet an anonymous resident to go see the house located at 8 Pongola Street. We learned that it was the very first house built in Brackendowns and is linked to one of the founding families of Joburg. In 1942, a descendant of the original owner sold a portion of the farm Palmietfontein to Samuel Potter, a publisher and company director of Irish descent. In 1947, work began on the farmhouse of what would later become known as “Southdowns”, a dairy farm run by his wife Jessie. Potter died in Durban in 1963 at the age of 82, and Jessie continued to run the farm until 1969. She then sold the property to the General Mining and Finance Company Ltd, who intended to develop the land into a suburb of Alberton. Brackendowns was declared a township in 1972 and the house was sold in 1979. The house is a double-storey with the upper floor topped by a steeply pitched slate roof. It was originally painted pale pink. Inside the house there are two fireplaces, large teak beams in the dining area and magnificent doors leading into the house. The
veranda roof is supported by cast-iron posts, which were bought from the original Carlton Centre when it was demolished in 1964. “Unfortunately the house has seen many changes over the years, and many of its original features and fittings have been lost. The house was converted into flatlets in approximately 2005 without council building approval and, to date, there have been no repercussions, despite the alteration being illegal. All the outbuildings were demolished when the land was sold as individual stands, and it is incredible that the house itself still stands today,” said Yvette Hand of the Alberton Heritage Association. Since the time of Jessie Potter, the house has changed hands several times. In the late 1990s it was used as an old-age home. In 2007 it was bought at an auction by a property development company that intended to demolish the house and build townhouses. The house stood empty for about two years, and during this time, was severely vandalised. In 2009, the Alberton Heritage Society applied to the Provincial Heritage Authority to step in and force the owners to take care of this important heritage site. More information to follow on the story in the next tame TIMES edition.
Last week Wednesday, 29 May tame TIMES was at a scene of a fire which broke out at a house in Fir Street, Mayberry Park. Emergency services such as ER24 Ambulances and community security were on the scene to help where they could. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is not yet clear. tame TIMES learned that the fire allegedly started in the kitchen and spread to parts of the house.

Superreeks by Gauteng education Hoërskool Dinamika headed for disaster states Afriforum The civil rights organisation AfriForum has stated in no uncertain terms their disappointed in the decision of David Makhura, Premier of Gauteng, to reinstate Panyaza Lesufi for a second term as MEC for Education in Gauteng after Lesufi would have initially acted as MEC for Finance and E-government in Gauteng.
Hoërskool Dinamika het aan die Superreeks deelgeneem, waarvan die finaal op Saterdag, 27 April plaasgevind het. Die uitslae is soos volg: Hokkie: o/14 Dinamika – 0 vs Ligbron – 2 : Dinamika eindig tweede o/15 Dinamika – 3 vs Generaal Hertzog – 1 : Dinamika eindig eerste o/16 Dinamika – 0 vs Ligbron – 1 : Dinamika eindig tweede 2des Dinamika – 2 vs Bergsig – 1 : Dinamika eindig vyfde 1stes Dinamika – 0 vs Bergsig – 2 : Dinamika eindig vierde Netbal: o/14 Dinamika – 14 vs Bergsig – 20 : Dinamika eindig tweede
o/15 Dinamika – 34 vs Bergsig – 12 : Dinamika eindig eerste o/16 Dinamika – 26 vs Bergsig – 21 : Dinamika eindig eerste o/17 Dinamika – 38 vs Bergsig – 8 : Dinamika eindig eerste 1stes Dinamika – 43 vs Bergsig – 40 : Dinamika eindig eerste vir die vyfde jaar in ‘n ry. Dinamika wen weer die netbaltrofee.
Afriforum opines that Lesufi has disdain for Afrikaans-speaking people and that he is targeting Afrikaans schools, and that his second term will set forth his political witch-hunt. “This despite the fact that he could already not provide solutions for serious problems – such as the need for quality education, enough schools and the development and application of mother-tongue education for all children in Gauteng – during his first term,” they stated.
“His attempt over the past five years to register prospective Grade 1 and 8 learners with an online system has also provided endless problems. Further, he drives his political agenda much stronger than paying the necessary attention to education problems in Gauteng. “This is absolutely tragic because as long as Lesufi is at the helm of education in Gauteng, education in Gauteng will not be approached fairly. The battle for mutual recognition and respect for each other will continue, despite the development of our children,” says Carien Bloem, AfriForum’s Project Coordinator for Education. “AfriForum will continue fighting for mother-tongue education and opposing Lesufi’s ideal to anglicise all schools in Gauteng,” Bloem concludes.

Ronnie visits Kidz Nest Pre-Primary & After Care
Each Semi Finalists has a target to generate 2 tonnes of recycling at the schools that they visit. Kidz Nest Pre-Primary & After Care received a special visit from Ronnie Recycler (Mpact Recycling mascot), Yasmeen Adam (Procurement Representative from Mpact Recycling) and the following Tammy Taylor
Mrs South Africa Semi Finalists: Stephanie van den Berg, Davina Moodley, Despina Senatore, Lebogang Nakana, Nobenguni Bogopa, Carla Young, & ShayLeigh Chizinga on Friday, 24 May.
Mpact Recycling is the leading paper and PET recycler in South Africa and has partnered with the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa pageant, a woman empowerment programme, for the fifth consecutive year. Through the
partnership with Mpact Recycling, the top 100 Mrs South Africa Semi Finalists are required to work alongside Mpact Recycling at schools with the aim of: promoting recycling awareness, supporting fund-raising initiatives and increasing recycling volumes. Each Semi Finalists has a target to generate 2 tonnes of recycling at the schools that they visit. The Ronnie Recycler programme allows schools to raise funds, as they are paid for their recyclables, whilst teaching environmental awareness, responsibility and sustainability. The partnership is valuable as it spotlights the importance of recycling. By recycling, you benefit the environment in a number of ways: it diverts recyclable paper; paper based packaging and plastic away from landfills; reduces greenhouse gas emissions and prevents the incineration of recyclable paper. Did you know that long-life milk and juice cartons are now recyclable? Recycling your used, empty cartons is easy and only requires you to remove or lift the cap, turn out the corners, flatten and replace the cap. The flattened carton is now ready to be recycled in your nearest Ronnie Bank. Kidz Nest Pre-Primary & After Care would like to encourage more community members and businesses to play their part in saving the environment by donating all their unwanted paper, magazines, newspapers, cartons etc. to the school for recycling. They need your contribution to help them increase their recycling volumes on a continual basis as a fund raiser and to keep the environment clean.

Young couple killed after their Bloody weekend on bakkie ran out of fuel identified Ekurhuleni roads
Johanco Fleischman, 19, and Jessica (Jess) Kuhn, 21. The young couple, shot and killed on Sunday, 26 May after their car ran out of diesel, has been identified as Johanco Fleischman, 19, and Jessica (Jess) Kuhn, 21. Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed their deaths to News24 on Monday, 27 May. On Sunday, Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela tasked a team of investigators with the hunt for their killers. Their bakkie was parked off the Putfontein Road off-ramp on the N12 bridge in Benoni at around 11:00 when unknown assailants attacked them, Dlamini told News24 on Sunday. “In condemning this cold-blooded murder, the commissioner assures the family and the community that all possible leads are being followed to find the killers. The tracking teams will work around the clock until the killers are brought to justice,” Dlamini said. Dlamini added that members of the community who were on the scene prevented the bakkie from catching fire. It is suspected that the assailants took a cellphone before fleeing the scene on foot Reward offered:
“Any information that may lead to the arrest of these killers may be rewarded. The suspects are considered to be armed and dangerous and members of the public are warned not to confront them but to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop [on 08600 10111] when they see them,” said Dlamini. Earlier, ER24’s Ross Campbell said paramedics were on scene at 12:30 and found a female in her 20s (Kuhn) inside the bakkie and she had been shot once. The 19-year-old male (Fleischman) was found outside the vehicle and he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. “Both showed no signs of life and were declared dead,” Campbell said. Campbell added that two people, believed to be workers who had been travelling with them, fled the scene but returned when emergency services arrived. “[The workers] alleged that a group of men had approached them after they had stopped on the side of Putfontein Road - where the bridge crosses over the N12,” he said.
Two customers shot dead in Germiston store robbery By: Poloku Tau
According to News24 two customers were shot dead during a business robbery at a Spar supermarket in Germiston on Saturday, 1 June. Police said 11 armed robbers entered the store in Van Dyk road at about 16.00. “The suspects instructed everyone inside the store to lie
down and in the process spotted a customer who had a firearm on him. They shot at him as well as a female customer and the two were declared dead on the scene,” said Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela. Netcare911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, said paramedics who responded to the scene had on assessment found “that an adult male, (who is an) off duty security guard and an adult female member of the public sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” adding that, “both patients were tragically declared deceased on the scene.” “The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. They hijacked two vehicles as they left the store,” stated Herbst. Makhubela said one of the hijacked vehicles was later recovered at Vosloorus. He said the suspects were still at large early on Saturday evening. “A manhunt for the suspects has been launched. Two cases of murder, business robbery and hijacking of motor vehicles were opened,” he said.
Eleven lives were lost in road crashes and two others due to gun shot wounds in different incidents around the City of Ekurhuleni in two days, from Friday 31 May to Saturday 1 June. It all started on Friday morning on the N17 freeway east bound at the Osborn Road on-ramp when two light motor vehicles were involved in an accident, resulting in two passengers passing away. An alleged stationary bakkie, with nine occupants, was parked in the emergency lane when another vehicle came from behind and crashed into it, severely injuring seven passengers and instantly killing two others. The freeway had to be closed for the duration of the investigation and emergency assistance operation. One of the four critically injured patients had to be flown to Sunshine Hospital in Benoni by medical helicopter. The others were road transported by ambulances to the same hospital. Saturday afternoon, 1 June at around 16:49, a murder was reported at Vegieland shopping centre, Klippoortjie Park in Germiston. When paramedics and law enforcement units arrived on scene, two adults, a male and a female were found lying motionless on the floor inside SPAR supermarket. Information on site states that there was a robbery that took place and the suspects short randomly, instantly killing the two adults alleged to be shoppers. The two were declared dead on scene and the scene was handed over to the police for further investigations. At around 18:10, a fatal crash occurred on the R103 North near Flanagan Road turn-off. Four vehicles were involved in the crash which lead to the death of three adult males. Three light motor vehicles and a minibus, which wasn’t found on scene, were all part of the crash. A VW Golf reportedly had mechanical breakdown and was manually pushed by two of its passengers. A Ford Fiesta came from behind and crashed into it, instantly killing the two and their driver. Jaws of Life had to be used to recover the deceased driver’s body from behind the steering wheel. The driver of the Ford Fiesta was with a two-year-old toddler in the vehicle and both were transported to Clinix private hospital in Vosloorus with serious injuries. The third vehicle, a Toyota Conquest with four occupants,
suffered minor damage and all four occupants escaped with minor injuries. A minibus wasn`t found on the scene though information received from witnesses states that it was involved suffering minor damages and with no casualties. Just a couple of minutes thereafter, about four hundred meters away from the initial crash, another two light motor vehicles, a sedan VW Polo and VW Golf, were involved in a collision. It was on the same road where the R103 meets with Luvuyo street in Mapleton, Boksburg. One adult female passenger was declared dead on scene, two others, an adult female driver and a male passenger, both sustained serious injuries. In the Golf, there were two occupants who sustained serious injuries as well. All four injured persons from both vehicles were medically treated on scene before being transported to Sunshine hospital in Benoni. Rescue teams had to use Jaws of Life equipment to recover the deceased persons stuck in the ruined vehicles in both crashes. Another crash took place on Oak Street in Primrose where a biker lost control of his bike and crashed to his death. Primrose rescue crews responded promptly to the scene and on arrival, they found a male biker aged around 20 years of age lying lifeless in the road. Unfortunately, on assessment and treatment, the patient was declared dead on scene by paramedics. The three fatal crashes are under the City of Ekurhuleni`s traffic officers` investigations. Around 20:26 on Saturday evening, an articulate truck was torched on R554 East near Rondebult bird sanctuary in Klippoortjie Park. Fire fighters from Alberton, Tokoza and Wadeville fire stations, responded with four fire engines for intervention. Two industrial pumpers and two water tankers were used to extinguish the vehicle. Police had to be called as members of Buhle Park community came in numbers to steal the groceries from the huge trailer. That hampered the smooth operations of the fire fighters and the police had to be called to enforce the law. As per information received on scene, the truck was hijacked and torched after the driver was assaulted and left at the point of hijacking, which is alleged to have been around Roodekop industrial area Germiston. The road had to be closed for the duration of the operation.
