tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet with the African Christian Democratic Party ( ACDP) and speak to their Spokesperson Linda Yates about who the ACDP is and what they stand for. Located in Stats Building, 2 Fore Street, Alberton the ACDP is a South African political party founded in 1993. It consists mainly of conservative Christians and its doctrine concentrates mostly on social issues such as abortion, homosexuality and pornogra-

phy. Here is what the ACDP have achieved and what they stand for: Maintaining integrity in Parliament Highly respected by all parties, ACDP MPs are often peace-makers behind the scenes. They negotiate in committees for favourable outcomes - this is where the work of Parliament is mainly done. The MP’s achievements are too many to list. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

A note from the

EDITOR The State of the City Address was delivered on the 25th anniversary of the birth of our democratic nation – an important moment where we reflect on the journey we have undertaken as a people. It is a journey that has been characterised not only by the pain and suffering that our people have endured, but by their collective indomitable spirit and relentless pursuit for the building of a higher civilisation – a South Africa anchored on the pillars of non-racialism, non-sexism and democracy. This State of the City Address six days after Human Rights Day was delivered at the Germiston Council Chambers, a day that was etched in the archive of our collective memory, in which we remember the brutal massacre of our people in Sharpeville and Langa, killed for protesting against a savage regime that had no regard for the value of human life. This day in our history must serve as a reminder of what we have overcome – of what we should never again become

Ek bly doodstil. Na so 3 minute sê Gysie saggies:” Ek dink ons petrol is klaar”. En voor ek my kon keer sê ek: “Nee, ons het nog maklik 120km oor”. Dankie tog vir ons versekering wat ‘n voertuig met petrol kon uitstuur om ons te red.

Figures Models grace the MSC Musica in search of international acclaim

tame TIMES will be reporting the Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina full speech in the next edition.

The third annual South African IMTA Convention recently took place aboard the MSC Musica from 18 to 22 March. This new and exciting venture is coordinated and run by the director, Mrs Elsa Van Den Heever and the 19 branch owners of the Figures Finesse International and Talent Agency franchises. Since its inauguration in March 2017, the numbers of attending agents have grown exponentially from only 10 international agents initially to 21 agents this year, of which two were South African. The international agents represented Paris, London, Germany, South Korea, Thailand, New York, Milan, China and Japan. The number of contestants that participated in total was 169. The Alberton branch proudly entered 16 contestants. The contestants participated in various competitions namely the Fashion Team, swimwear, commercial print, runway and fashion print, TV beauty commercial, real TV commercial and

they could also compete in 1 additional talent such as singing or dancing. All the Alberton contestants received call-backs from the various attending agents who judged the different competitions. We would like to congratulate Shannon French who received a sponsorship of the competition fees for the event held in New York in July in recognition of her brilliant dancing from Tony Hodges of the IMTA Foundation based in New York, Tieghan Griffin-Coetzer who received a golden certificate and automatic qualification to the New York IMTA Convention 2019 in recognition of her acting achievement in New York in 2018 where she placed 2nd amongst 5000 contestants, and, Jolene Stander for winning the Miss and Master MSC Senior swimwear Competition. The Alberton Figures branch is extremely proud of all their contestants. Way to go A Team!

MUMBAI’S DARKEST DAY is based on the 2009 documentary Surviving Mumbai about the Mumbai attacks in 2008 at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India. The film stars Dev Patel (Lion; Slumdog Millionaire), Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Jason Isaacs, Suhail Nayyar, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo.

Get yourself ready for heart-wrenching action and drama that will keep you glued to your seat for the whole 125 minutes. Hotel Mumbai is a thriller film, released in South Africa cinemas on Friday, 29 March. The film is directed by Anthony Maras and written by John Collee and Maras. It

The film is based on true events and focuses on the happenings during the terrorists attacks on the city in November 2008. Mumbai saw 10 members of Lashkare-Taiba, an Islamic terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carrying out a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days. The attacks, which drew widespread global condemnation, began on Wednesday 26 November and lasted until Saturday 29 November 2008. At least 174 people sadly lost their lives during the four days. It is harrowing seeing and experiencing the callousness in which the attackers carry out their tasks, which is completely obvious by how fast they carry out their plans, not stopping or hesitating for a moment.

By: Kay Evans

As stated in various media publications, the attackers had planned their attack several months before November 2008 and ensure they knew some areas well enough to vanish and reappear after security forces had left. They carried out their plan over the four days by using a satellite phone and cell phones to talk to each other. In transcripts intercepted by Indian authorities between the attackers and their handlers, the handlers provided the attackers with encouragement, tactical advice, and information gained from media coverage that was airing live while the attacks were happening. This movie is life-changing and a definite must watch. The enormity of the trauma, shock and world-shattering heartbreak that people endured during those four days is evident when you watch this film. Make sure you catch this film at one of your local Ster-Kinekor Theatres in their luxurious Cine Prestige cinemas, and experience this film in style.

Celebrates 10 years this month

It is no April fools joke, tame TIMES has survived 10 of the most turbulent years in the Media industry. Digitalization has been taking its toll with Google and Facebook the only winners in the advertising income space. We have seen huge publications fade away. With every release of ABC auditing figures it is clear that the circulation of popular mainstream newspapers are decreasing. tame however, is still going strong. Our sister publication, Taxi Times, is growing faster than any other newspaper in South Africa. Our team may be small, but we are dynamite!!

African Christian Democratic Party hope for the nation

The MP’s achievements are too many to list. Protecting religious freedom for all During the drafting of our Constitution, ACDP President Kenneth Meshoe instigated a protest march by Christians in Cape Town that prevented the inclusion of the words “secular state” in our Constitution and insisted on the insertion of the clause “religious observances can be held at state institutions under certain conditions”. If that was not done, then our Constitution would have stated that SA is a secular state, with the following serious consequences: the use of state buildings for religious purposes would have been outlawed; religious office-bearers would have been prevented from holding any office of state and the mention of God in the Constitution would have been prohibited. Speaking up for Christians Almost 80% of South Africans are Christians. So, the ACDP has marched for the preservation of Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day; we were the only political party fighting TopTV’s bid to broadcast pornography; in 2006 we marched with churches for marriage between one man and one woman; and we have also protested many times against legalized abortion on demand. Keeping the South African Dream alive The ACDP believes that Africans come in all colours. Our diverse members are united in our vision for a shared future for all South Africans. Nurturing families ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley made paternity leave legal, pioneering the first Private Member’s Bill to be passed in our National Assembly. We also fought against making parents criminals for spanking their children, and won. In KwaZulu-Natal ACDP’s MPL submitted the first private member’s bill in South Africa requiring a sex offenders’ register. It was supported by the legislature unanimously but did not pass at the NCOP. Promoting employment ACDP supports apprenticeships for youth on-thejob training, and SMMEs for job creation.

Waging war on human trafficking We made sure the anti-human trafficking law was passed. Combatting undemocratic laws ACDP’s legal brains were behind the fight to amend and improve the Protection of State Information Bill (the ‘Secrecy Bill’.) Caring for HIV patients In Gauteng an ACDP project pioneered the use of ARVs for HIV-positive pregnant women. In KwaZulu-Natal ACDP broke ground campaigning for the use of ARVs for rape survivors - resulting in ARV’s being made available years before they were rolled out anywhere else. Keeping criminals off the street The ACDP focuses on tightening bail and parole conditions for serious crimes and is responsible for the restorative justice principles in the Child Justice Act. Helping govern in two Metros The ACDP is co-governing in Tshwane and Johannesburg. We have Mayoral Committee members of Health in Tshwane, and Housing in Johannesburg. In the past ACDP also had an MEC in the Western Cape. Exposing state capture The ACDP has fought tirelessly to expose state capture in the Eskom and SABC parliamentary inquiries. Fighting land expropriation without compensation The ACDP voted against land expropriation without compensation. MPs listened in respectful silence as Rev Kenneth Meshoe said: “Two wrongs don’t make a right”. ACDP has proposed specialized courts to speed up land reform.

ANGRY CUSTOMER

DRIVES CAR INTO A BANK

Standard Bank has confirmed none of their staff members or clients were injured when a woman drove into one of its branches on Friday, 29 March. Reports confirm that the motorist had driven her car “a number of times” into the bank’s front entrance at the K90 Centre, causing about R100 000 in damages. Publications spoke to a security guard, who said that the customer, who was “very, very angry” had left the bank, got into her Mercedes Benz and drove “through the windows”, knocking it repeatedly until they were “all down”. She was shouting and saying, ‘if you don’t give me my money, then I will go inside the bank with this car,” he told the reporter. In a video shared on Twitter by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee, a silver luxury vehicle is seen on the pavement in front of the branch’s damaged exterior. “A lady drove her car into a @StandardBankZA in Boksburg after she waited hours for service! #MovingForward,” the caption to the video reads. Standard Bank spokesperson Ross Linstroom announced that counselling had been offered to those “impacted by this unfortunate event”. “We can also confirm that the client was served in a professional manner and in line with client-service procedures. The query was of a complexed nature. This is now a police investigation, and as such we are not in a position to provide further details,” he said.

WAYS TO FIGHT THE ELECTRICITY PRICE HIKE

Consumers will be feeling the pinch after the National Energy Regulator of South Africa approved electricity increases of up to 50% over the next three years. “Many South Africans are left scratching their heads as they try to think of ways to make their household budgets stretch even further. Just this year alone we will see around a 10% increase to our electricity bills,” says Susan Steward from Budget Insurance. “With these, and other living expense increases on the cards, consider doing a power audit of your home to see how and where you can save electricity.” 1. Bright idea: switch to energy efficient light bulbs if you have not yet done so. While they are more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, over the longer-term, you will see a difference in savings as the bulbs last longer. 2. Smart plugs for smart people: smart plugs are an effective way to help you maintain your power con-

sumption and keep your home energy efficient with little input. Smart plugs can be set to switch off your appliances such as TVs and sound systems entirely as opposed to putting them onto stand-by mode which guzzles power. Smart plugs typically have a companion app allowing you to set preferences, schedules and names for the devices. 3. Time for timers: timers, or smart switches, whether for geysers, pool pumps or security lights will help you only consume electricity when these items need to be used. The geyser is one of the most energy consuming items in the household and a smart switch allows this to be turned on or off when necessary. 4. Out with the old: letting go of large appliances such as a fridge can seem counter-productive when trying to save money but newer fridges are far more energy efficient than the one which has likely been part of the family for a number of years. Appliances are graded from A to G on their efficiency, with A being the most ef-

ficient and G being the least. 5. Long-term planning: there are some bigger ways to reduce a home’s electricity consumption and should be considered as part of a longer term investment and cost saving exercise. This includes putting in solar panels, switching out electricity-run stoves and ovens for gas and replacing air conditioning with ceiling fans and fire places. A pre-paid electricity meter would also be an effective to monitor your home’s power consumption and assist with budgeting for power on a monthly basis. “The best way to save and conserve power is by ensuring everyone is on the same page about what to do. Do your children, partners and housemates know how much is being spent on electricity every month? Through a group effort and by making a conscious choice to save electricity, the best results can be achieved,” says Steward.

April will be tough for SA April will be a difficult month for South Africa with a slew of price hikes expected to take a punishing toll on consumers and the ailing economy. Petrol will increase by R1.34 cents per litre for 93 octane and R1.31/l for 95 octane in inland provinces from April. Also kicking in is the General Fuel Levy going up 5c/l and the Road Accident Fund Levy by 15c/l. “The average motorist uses about 130 litres of petrol so it will now cost about R177 more from their disposable income,” economist Mike Schüssler told Fin24.

“For most people this is a lot of money dipping into spending from elsewhere in the economy.” April will be a difficult month for SA with price shocks and it will not be very good for economic growth,” he said. He explained that not only will it take the inflation rate higher but it will also mean that the second quarter growth rate will be subdued. This also comes on the back of crippling load shedding that added more strain on the struggling economy.

Alberton house-breaking Taxi drivers shoot live rounds

syndicate busted into the air near Eastgate

Brackendowns SAPS and local security companies managed to bust a housebreaking syndicate in Alberton on Wednesday, 27 March. This after information regarding a suspicious vehicle, which was spotted driving on its rim, was received. CPS Security, Fox Security, Fourth Dimension, D & D Tactical together with Brackendowns SAPS entered a local estate in order to look for the vehicle. The

vehicle was located and the property was searched. Firearms, ammunition, hijacked motor vehicles and jewellery were discovered inside the house. On further investigation it was established that the house belonged to a syndicate which were involved in several robberies all over Gauteng

Illegal taverns closed down

On Sunday, 27 March, two Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers stood by and watched when a group of taxi drivers fired a hail of bullets in the air scaring motorists near Eastgate. The taxi drivers were accompanying the family of one of the two taxi owners who had been gunned in Bedfordview on Sunday. In some cultures, when a person dies, close relatives visit the scene to “take” the spirit of the deceased to its resting place However, this was not the case at the intersection of Allum Road and Cumberland Street on Wednesday. Guns of different calibres were fired, sending a hail of bullets into the air. JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said two of their officers were blocking traffic lanes for a cleansing ceremony just before 13:00 on Allum Road and Cumberland Street, near Eastgate. “The ceremony was held by the family of a taxi owner who was killed there recently. Other taxi drivers unexpectedly started firing shots into the air. These drivers were attending the cultural ritual. No arrests were made and the JMPD does not condone the shooting. This incident is, however, being investigated by the SAPS officers who arrived on the scene soon after the shooting,” Minnaar said. He referred journalists to the SAPS when he was asked why the JMPD didn’t act when the shooting began and said the officers were only controlling traffic. Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said none of their members were present during the shooting. However, they were investigating the incident and their members were on the scene to collect evidence.

“Our investigations will determine which guns were used. Discharging of a firearm in a public space is a criminal offence. Whether the firearm is licensed or not, it remains an offence,” he said. Chairman of Gun Owners SA Paul Oxley, said the incident was “totally” against the law. “What happened is totally wrong and serious actions must be taken against the men who fired their weapons in the air. It is worrying that metro officers were on standby as the men fired their guns. Police management have been recently telling the country that they are doing everything to fight crime but their officers were spectators when a criminal offence was being committed. “What happened is ridiculous from what police management are preaching to the nation. Innocent people were in the vicinity where guns were fired randomly and they could have been seriously injured,” he said. Oxley said many gun owners have a belief that when you fire a bullet in the air, it will disappear. “What they don’t know is that the bullet comes down with the same velocity it exited the weapon with. It then becomes extremely dangerous to those who are in the vicinity of the person firing the gun.” “It is very disappointing for JMPD officers who stood and watched. The JMPD has the same rights as SAPS members to arrest suspects. In this instance, they failed to act. If this unlawful behaviour continues, everyone who has a gun will just shoot randomly in the air. Even a man having a braai at his home will take his gun and open fire thinking it is legal to do so,” said Oxley.

Robbery at Alberton Mall

In a continued effort to crack down on the illegal sale of alcohol in Primrose, officers from the Primrose Police Station hosted an operation in the Makause informal settlement two weeks ago. During the operation, three illegal taverns were closed down, three suspects aged between 26 and 35 were arrested and volumes of alcohol were confiscated. The operation formed part of a prevention campaign that addressed other serious crimes such as house robberies and hijackings. At each of the taverns, the owner was asked for a valid liquor licence and if they were unable to provide one they were ar-

rested and charged with dealing in liquor without a licence and their establishment was closed. “We warn the community of Primrose that selling liquor without a valid license is illegal,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. “We will continue to conduct similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol and gender-based violence in the informal settlements.” The suspects were taken to the Primrose Police Station where they were later released on a warning after paying an admission of guilt fine.

CPS Security’s reaction units responded to an alarm at a local business. The units responded within two minutes of the alarm being triggered. Suspects were seen trying to gain access into a business property at Alberton Mall and fled in a white Fiat Bakkie. The units gave chase and requested

back-up. The suspects lost control of the vehicle on Swartkoppies Road and fled on foot into a veld. Three suspects managed to escape on foot. The vehicle and breaking implements were handed over to Mondeor SAPS
