The funeral service of Marnus Nagel was held in private for close family and friends in the Free State.
The death of four pupils at Hoërskool Driehoek is one of the saddest moments in the history of education in South Africa. Attending the funeral services last week and sharing the pain with families and friends of the pupils were not easy but truly teaches one to appreciate life. Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Roydon Olckers, Jandré Steyn and Marli Currie. tame TIMES understands that the funeral service of Marnus Nagel was private for close family and friends in the Free State. On Thursday, 7 February, Jandré Steyn’s funeral service took place at the River of Life Family Church in Vanderbijlpark. Jandré was described as a young man that lived his life to the fullest. Family and friends said goodbye to Jandré with tears and sadness in their hearts. “He lifted everyone’s spirit around him. He loved sports and the water,” said Pastor Armand Niemand. Family and friends of Marli Currie said goodbye to the wonderful young lady on Friday morning, 8 February. About 600 people attended Marli’s funeral at the NG Suid Gemeente in Vanderbijlpark. The parents of Marli described her as the flower which God plucked. She will be missed by her family and friends. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga attended the funeral service of Marli Currie. Motshekga said that she
shares the pain of the families and the school. Teenager Roydon Olckers was described as a boy who loved dancing and lived life as a devoted Christian. Roydon’s mom and dad said that they will see him again one day and that they believe he is with the Lord for eternity. tame TIMES prays that God strengthens the family members of Roydon Olckers, Jandré Steyn, Marli Currie and Marnus Nagel.

EDITOR Councillor Maifala inspects progress A note from the
at Brackenhurst Library
Valentine’s Day IS COMING UP AND WE DID SOME RESEARCH…
The day when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts is coming up and we did some research on where it all comes from and what it means. The popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine”. The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart” A powerful quote by George Sand says; “Only one happiness in life: to love and be loved.”. tame TIMES wishes all readers a Happy Valentine’s Day and encourage people to share romance and love with the person that they love.
close attention to detail needs to be a priority, to ensure that work is carried out correctly the first time around. We are pleased, as the DA, that the Metro is finally addressing the issue we have been driving since 2016. The DA and the Ward 38 Committee have worked tirelessly to see improvements at the Brackenhurst Library,” added Maifala. Maifala concluded that the DA will continue to ensure that the doors of the library stay open and that the facility is in good condition. * Supplied by Councillor Malcolm Maifala
Ward 38 Councillor Malcolm Maifala visited the Brackenhurst Library on Thursday, 7 February to inspect the refurbishing of the library and says that he is incredibly concerned about the rate at which the work is executed. “When I arrived at the library, I spoke to the stand-in Chief Librarian who indicated much dissatisfaction; stating that the contractors are not always on site, and when they are away, reasons are
not given for their absence,” said Maifala. The DA is concerned at what appears to be a lack of communication between the contractors and the librarian and poor workmanship from the contractors. “While we welcome the improvements already made, we are concerned about the quality of work done at the library. Poor workmanship leads to construction defects, which will cause serious financial implications for the City.

Louis wins big at Eye of Africa title in playoff On Sunday, 3rd of February, Louis de Jager won his fifth Sunshine Tour title when he took the Eye of Africa PGA Championship on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, to take his career playoff record to three out of three. After finishing regulation play in a share of the lead on 12-under-par with Trevor Fisher Jnr, the pair had to wait out a storm for nearly two hours before they could commence with their second shots on the playoff hole. In the end, De Jager was able to win with a simple par on the par-four 18th, while Fisher made a bogey. “I’m glad to keep my playoff record up, and I’m proud of that,” said De Jager. “During the delay, I knew what I had to do, so even though there was a lot of pressure, I was able to hit it really close to the hole and I had to just tap it in”. The victory is easily the biggest in his career, coming as it did in the 96-year-old championship which has had some of the greatest names in South African golf win it. “It’s a big trophy to have your name on. I’m really honoured. It’s been one of my goals and it feels great to have achieved it,” he said. The final round proved to be a difficult one for all the main protagonists, and Daniel Greene, who at one stage at the 13th held a three-stroke lead, fell out of contention with three bogeys in the final four holes to finish third. Fisher bogeyed the par-three 16th, but pulled back that shot with a birdie on the par-five 17th before making par on 18 and losing out in the playoff. In response, De Jager had dragged himself into contention with successive birdies on 13 and 14, but bogeyed the 17th before forcing the playoff. “I was watching the leaderboard throughout the round,” he said. “At one stage I was three behind. I thought I was two behind Daniel, and I made two birdies so I thought I was tied, but I was still one behind. That helped me keep my focus and concentrate on the final few holes. “I had a good chance with the putt on the final hole in regulation to win. I wasn’t going to leave it short, but I hit it probably a foot too hard and it just didn’t take the break.” It was the second victory of the 2018/19 Sunshine Tour season for De Jager, and with five other top-10s to his credit, he’s clearly the form man as the season draws to close.
Love is in the air this valentine’s day Valentine’s weekend couldn’t get any more exciting thanks to an incredible line-up of talent set to take to the Birchwood Hotel stage on Friday, 15 February for the first Birchwood Comes Alive Jazz Evening of the year. Taking to the stage are diverse singer and songwriter Donald Moatshe, RnB group Beyond Vocal, renowned ventriloquist and comedian Chik Aljoy, and upcoming songstress Nwabisa Mxakatho. Since his debut album in 2008, Know You Better, Donald has taken South Africa by storm with two platinum albums, chart topping hit singles and four Metro FM Music Awards nominations. He has also teamed up with fellow stars’ Kelly Khumalo, KB, Malaika, Selaelo Selota and rapper Slikour. President Ramaphosa tackles the issue of Eskom
President Cyril Ramaphosa argues that Eskom is in crisis and the risks the deterioration of the State owned electricity provider poses to South Africa are grave. The President says that Eskom could severely damage our economic and social development ambitions. “We need to take bold decisions and decisive action. The consequences may be painful, but they will be even more devastating if we delay. In responding to this crisis, we are informed by the need to minimise any adverse economic cost to the consumer and taxpayer”, said the President. The President said that he will ensure that there is meaningful consultation and dialogue with all key stakeholders. “We will lead a process with labour, Eskom and other stakeholders to work out the details of a just transition, and
proper, credible and sustainable plans that will address the needs of all those who may be affected”. “As we address the challenges that face Eskom, we also need to safeguard our national fiscal framework, achieve a positive impact on our sovereign credit rating, and pay attention to the rights and obligations of Eskom’s funders”, said the President. Eskom has come up with the nine-point turnaround plan which the Government supports and want to see implemented. In line with this plan, Eskom will need to take urgent steps to significantly reduce its costs. It will also need more revenue through an affordable tariff increase. “We need to take steps to reduce municipal non-payment and confront the culture of non-payment that exists in some communities”, added the
President. The President said that Government will support Eskom’s balance sheet, and the Minister of Finance will provide further details on this in the Budget Speech. This we will do without burdening Eskom with more unmanageable debt. “To ensure the credibility of the turnaround plan and avoid a similar financial crisis in a few years’ time, Eskom will need to develop a new business model”, said Ramaphosa. “This business model needs to take into account the root causes of its current crisis and the profound international and local changes in the relative costs, and market penetration of energy resources, especially clean technologies”, he added. This is important for the entity to manage the transmission grid combined with the systems operator and power planning, procurement and buying functions. “It is imperative that we undertake these measures without delay to stabilise Eskom’s finances, ensure security of electricity supply, and establish the basis for long-term sustainability”, concluded the President.
Tshwane Metro reaches settlement with AfriForum After a three-year-long court battle, the Tshwane Metro had no other choice but to reach a settlement agreement with AfriForum regarding maintenance and repair work at the Rooiwal sewage works. The Metro will also need to carry the legal costs of this battle, while the court order includes a maintenance schedule according to which the maintenance and repair work at the Rooiwal sewage works must be done – linked with specific dates. The demise of the Rooiwal sewage works was brought to the Metro’s attention by AfriForum members, after which the civil rights organisation launched an urgent court application in October 2016. The Metro made an undertaking to report the progress with regard to the maintenance and repair work of the sewage works to the court, but failed to do so. AfriForum subsequently had to place the application on the court roll once again to enable the order to be
made final. “It is extremely urgent that the Rooiwal sewage works be repaired as soon as possible. The tempo at which pollution is taking place is busy taking on disastrous proportions. The polluted river flows into, among others, the Crocodile River, which illustrates the extensiveness of the problem,” says Lambert de Klerk,
AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria South. Communities next to the Apies River ought to experience relief within the next three months should the Metro respect the court order. Should the Metro however not obey the order, they will face contempt of a court order that will result in either a fine or criminal proceedings.

Pregnancy education should be a priority in South Africa Experts indicate that there is a lack of education about pregnancy in South Africa, which can lead to avoidable complications at birth or long-term developmental challenges for the child. Pregnancy Awareness Week, which runs from 10 to 16 February, aims to spread information that promotes healthy pregnancies. “Newly pregnant women face a lot of choices – from how to best manage their pregnancy, to which medical professionals to see and where to deliver. Finding information that is accurate and applicable to them can be a challenge,” says Dr. Howard Manyonga, an obstetrician and the Head of The Birthing Team, an affordable maternity care programme. Manyonga highlights four key things that all pregnant women should know: Prenatal care is crucial to a safe delivery: Tests and check-ups during pregnancy are vital to preventing anything from going wrong during childbirth. The risk of premature delivery or an emergency C-section goes up if women do not get adequate prenatal care. Regular visits with a midwife allow for proper monitoring of fetal growth and detection of complications like urinary tract infection which can cause premature delivery. Your diet impacts your baby: Eating a balanced diet is very important for healthy fetal development, as is avoiding things that can harm the baby such as alcohol, smoking and too many sugary snacks and drinks. Taking prenatal multivitamins is a good way to ensure your baby is getting what it needs to grow. Costs can be unpredictable: Many women choose to deliver in a private hospital but do not realise that it is impossible to predict their final bill. You need to budget for the possibility of an emergency C-section, extra hospital days and specialist fees. For those who are uninsured, this can be financially crippling. You are protected by labour law: Pregnant women cannot be discriminated against in the workplace or expected to perform any tasks that are damaging to their unborn child, including heavy lifting and exposure to chemicals. More regular bathroom breaks and allowances for morning sickness are written into the Constitution. It is illegal to dismiss a woman because she is pregnant. In order to tackle many of the challenges faced by women in South Africa, Dr. Manyonga designed a maternity programme called The Birthing Team, supported by healthcare management company PPO Serve. The Birthing Team makes complete private maternity care affordable for uninsured women by charging an inclusive fee that covers all necessary scans, tests, medications, services and assessments from 12 weeks of pregnancy to six weeks after delivery. With a focus on antenatal care and patient education, the teams reduce the risks of preterm delivery and emergency C-sections. It is currently operational at Netcare Park Lane in Johannesburg, the Femina Hospital in Pretoria and JMH City Hospital in Durban.

Nabbed for illegal skins Shooting in Eikenhof Woman arrested in Alberton for allegedly being in possession of leopard skins
Alberton Spokesperson Sgt Ramotshela informed tame TIMES that a case has been opened at Alberton SAPS for a contravention of the Biodiversity Act. An Alberton SAPS officer patrolling in Sector Three received information that a person was in possession of the skins of wild animals.
Responding quickly to the information, officers investigated the implicated address and found plastic bags filled with the skins of leopards. A female, aged 56, was found at the address and was taken in for questioning. Specialised units were summoned to the scene to assist with the investigation.
leaves three dead
Reports confirm that three people were killed and two others injured in a shooting incident in Eikenhof in the South of Johannesburg on Friday evening. “Shortly before 8pm on Friday evening the 8th February 2019, paramedics from ER24 as well as members of the police attended the scene at a shop along the R550 in Eikenhof. One person was found with fatal gunshot wounds on the scene. Two others were in a critical condition”, said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak. “While paramedics were treating one of the critically injured men on
scene, his vital signs deteriorated. Despite their efforts to revive him, he was sadly later declared dead”, Vermaak added. He said another man, also critically injured, was rushed to hospital. “On route to hospital his vital signs deteriorated. Paramedics were unable to revive him, and was also declared dead”. Two others were treated for multiple gunshot wounds and rushed to a nearby hospital for further care. “The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known. Police attended the scene and will conduct an investigation”, Vermaak said.
Check your security system before the lights go out Man threatened at gun With load-shedding being experienced by large parts of the country in recent days, a private security company has warned South Africans to make sure their alarm systems are tested and working properly. “Many people are under the incorrect assumption that their home alarm system is deactivated when the power supply is interrupted. However, if you have a stable and correctly programmed system coupled with a battery that is in good condition, it will continue to protect the premises during a power outage – regardless if the outage is because of load-shedding or not”, says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT. The only time it may not function correctly is if there is a technical issue, or the battery power is low. “Most modern alarm systems have a back-up battery pack that activates automatically when there is a power failure”, says Hattingh. She adds that there are a number of
practical steps that can be taken to ensure security is not compromised during power cuts. Some of these include ensuring that the alarm system has an adequate battery supply, that all automated gates and doors are secured and lastly to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to your security provider or the South African Police Service (SAPS). With the added inconvenience of the lights going out at night due to power cuts, candles and touch-lights are handy alternatives. Hattingh says home and business-owners should consider installing Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, which is integrated into the alarm system’s wiring and automatically switches on for a maximum of 15 minutes when there is a power outage. “If there is an additional battery pack, the small, non-intrusive LED lights can stay on for the duration of the power outage – or a maximum of 40 hours – without draining the primary alarm battery”, she explains.
THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS TO REMEMBER ABOUT BEING PREPARED FOR A POWER CUT, SAYS HATTINGH, ARE: • It is important that your alarm system has an adequate battery supply. Batteries should be checked regularly. • Alarms should be checked during extended power outages to keep systems running. • Power cuts can impact on fire systems and fire control systems; so these also need to be checked
regularly. • The more frequent use of gas and candles can increase the risk of fire and home fire extinguishers should be at reachable places. • Above all remain vigilant during a power outage, be on the look-out for any suspicious activity and report this to us or the SAPS immediately.
point in shopping centre Primrose police recently arrested a 20-year-old man on a charge of pointing a firearm. “The complainant told officers that he had been at the Marlands Shopping Centre when he was approached by a man he knew and his friends,” explained communications officer of the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome. The two reportedly began to fight and the suspect ran to his father’s vehicle and retrieved a firearm. The suspect allegedly pointed the firearm at the victim, who surrendered. “The accused then called his friends and together they fled the scene,” said Maome. Using the description given by the victim, police were able to find and arrest the suspect. He has
since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.
Primrose residents warned of theft in the area Valuables left in parked vehicles remain a concern for the Primrose police. “We are once again appealing to members of the community to be careful where they park their vehicles and what is left visible when the vehicle is parked,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. “Do not leave valuable items visible in your vehicle as they can draw the attention of criminals, encourage them to break into your vehicle and steal your property. “Items like laptops, cellphones and tools should be stored in the
vehicle’s boot if they cannot be removed.” Police also discourage residents from parking their vehicles around the shops and businesses for extended periods of time. In addition, police have asked residents to refrain from parking their vehicles on the pavement, especially overnight. “You are inviting the criminals to target your vehicle when you park it on the pavement,” said Maoma. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activities in the area to the Primrose Police Station on 011 842 0522 or 071 675 6864/5/6/7/8/9.

Fit for Free at Germiston Lake Fitness fanatics in Ekurhuleni can now flex and stretch their muscles and achieve physical fitness and wellness at the annual session of the City’s “Fit For Free” aerobics session. The first programme started on Saturday, 9 February at Germiston Lake. The “Fit For Free” aerobics programme is the City’s flagship wellness programme for members of the community, and it is held annually. It is dubbed “Fit For Free” because it gives the residents an opportunity to achieve physical fitness at no cost. As part of the programme, the City hosts a three-hour aerobics session free-of-charge at various open spaces and stadiums across the City, every Saturday morning. The success of this programme is due to the solid partnership the City enjoys with community-based aerobics clubs, with over 30 clubs involved in the programme. The aerobics class is scheduled to start at 09h00 and end at 12h00. Eighteen busses have been arranged to transport all interested participants to and from the venue. The programme is open to participants of all age groups. Participants are encouraged to bring their own food as only fruits will be served on the day.

ELFA Super League pre-season is underway The Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League pre-season is well underway. The ELFA season is set to kick off in March and with only a month left to the start of the season, coaches are getting their stars ready. “We are currently developing two sides for the Super League season,” said Peter Oliver, Germiston City Football Club chairperson. Germiston City Football Club’s reserve and first team travelled to Olympia Football Club’s turf over the weekend for their first pre-season friendly. Though they lost, the first team
showed some very good prospects, coming from 0-3 down to end the game at 2-3. The reserve team scored a 1-0 victory against Olympia’s reserves. The pre-season tournament carries on this week, with Germiston City facing Zwide FC and Olympia FC facing Linhill Celtic FC. “The juniors have commenced training as well”, Oliver added. The u-12 to u-17 teams train on a Monday and Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm, whilst the seniors practise on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5.45pm to 7.30pm.”
