Laat my wonder hoe die plek gaan lyk in 5 jaar se tyd. “Ook net n woord van bekommernis. Ek het deur ‘n slaggat gery by Lemon tree wat my band gebars het. Wie gee om ons het mos baie geld om als self te vervang.... R1200 later... Asb hierdie dorp is besig om ‘n seer oog te word,” soebat die inwoner

Differently Abled School is Source of Hope “The Lusito School is more than an institution that teaches and cares for differently abled children, it is a place where hope is infectious, and children’s lives are changed for the better forever,” Principal Deolinda Molina, says. One such example is Marco Gomes, who despite being differently abled, has overcome worldly expectations and progressed from being a student at the Lusito School to being an invaluable member of staff. “The human spirit can endure, but more so, it can soar despite adversity. Marco embodies this principle and is an inspiration to everyone else around him,” Molina says. Gomes (44) suffered from cerebral anoxia when he was a toddler. At the tender age of two months, doctors had to operate on his heart to assist his oxygen-starved brain. The cerebral anoxia affected Marco’s mental development, rendering him completely dependent on the aid of his mother and the assistance of his teachers at the Lusito School. But in spite of this, Gomes managed to not only graduate, but has become a longstanding employee at the school. “Marco came to the Lusito School when he was five years old. He has been working there for 14 years. He is part of Lusito School, and Lusito is a huge part of Marco’s life, so much so that he struggles when it’s the holidays. His job fills him with so much pride. As a mother you always want the best for your children and having a purpose is important in a person’s life. This job offers Marco that,”

Lourdes Gomes, his mother, says. Marco assists teachers in the classroom and feeds those children that are too young or incapable of feeding themselves, Molina continues. “He also paints and fixes whatever is broken around the school. Because he has been here so long, everybody in the community knows Marco. He gets along with everyone and you can see that he truly enjoys his job.” But his mom admits it hasn’t always been easy. “It has been a long road for all of us. I’ve had to teach Marco to read and handle himself, as you are aware, most things in this world don’t cater for differently abled people and most things can be a hazard to them. Even now, I’m always mothering him,” Gomes says lightheartedly. The Lusito School, located in the south of Johannesburg, started off as a small day-care centre and has developed into a fully-fledged school for the differently abled. Today, the school has more than 80 learners who not only come from South Africa but also other corners of the African Continent. “Presently Lusito School cares for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, Down’s Syndrome and other syndromes,” Molina says. The World Health Organisation estimates that one billion people, or 15% of the world’s population, live with some form of disability. Whilst Statistics South Africa says people living with a disability make up 7,5% of the population. The school is managed by the Lusito Association, a non-profit organisation whose function is to raise funds for

The association’s biggest fundraising event is the Lusito Land Festival which will take place from 20 to 22 April, and then from the 26 to 28 April 2019, at Cayman Road, Johannesburg South. “Without Lusito School, Marco would not be the person he is today. He lives for helping those children. I think because he understands the importance of receiving help from someone that truly cares about you,” Gomes concludes. The Lusito Land Festival is the ultimate event for cultural fun for the whole family. A 19 year old killed on N3 Highway

A man, believed to be 19-years-old, was killed on Sunday afternoon, 24 February when he was knocked over by a light motor vehicle while exiting his broken car on the N3 Highway in Germiston. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 16h00 to find the body of a man lying in the middle lane of the highway. Another service was found on scene assessing the patient. On further assessment, paramedics discovered that the man had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Paramedics immediately began treatment and initiated CPR. Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned, and he was declared dead. It is understood that the man’s vehicle had broken down on the side of the road. As the man exited the vehicle, he was knocked over by a light motor vehicle. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

Traditional music, dance theatre production to dazzle art lovers The City of Ekurhuleni in partnership with iAfrika Theatre Education will on Saturday, 9 March 2019, set the Germiston Theatre stage alight during the annual Ingoma Music and Dance theatre production. Art lovers will be treated to electrifying scenes of traditional dance, gumboot dance, pantsula, and modern dance throughout the two-hour long musical show. Well known guru in the arts industry, Siphiwe Nkosi of favorite telenovela ‘Isibaya’ will be the narrator of this theatre production. The Ingoma Music and Dance theatre production is written and directed by John Lata, a creative legend armed with ‘n langnaweek. Sommer bosveld toe, in ‘n pragtige gastehuis. So lelike bruinerige ding.

more than 35 years of experience in the entertainment industry. Lata wears many caps as actor, writer, director, producer and composer. Forming part of the cast on the day will be the commissioned group, Mazibuyel’ Emasisweni also known as Taxido, which over the years have won international awards. Five art groups from across the city, having excelled during the city-wide auditions were selected to form part of the musical production. Besides earning a spot in the cast, each group received R20 000 incentivising more participation in the creative and cultural industries in South Africa.

Ennerdale school shut amid collapse fears

Wedding bells are in the air!

Congratulations to tame TIMES editor Garin Joemath, who married his beautiful wife Shetel this past Sunday. We at tame TIMES wish you both all the best for the future. T h e Gauteng department of education has done nothing to address crumbling infrastructure at Ennerdale Secondary School, putting more than 1 200 pupils’ lives at risk, according to parents from the school. The parents have lambasted the department and its MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, saying their dithering could see a catastrophe similar to – or even worse than – the Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy in which four children died and 20 others were injured. According to News24 reports the Ennerdale school was visited during this month and saw several large cracks on two walkways connecting two blocks. Scaffolding poles – which parents say were put up in 2016 - support the walkways. Concerned parents claim that when pupils walk on the structure they feel it vibrate. The owner of the scaffolding is demanding the poles back, the parents say. There are signs of infrastructure damage to other parts of the school building. Roof tiles

have shifted in some areas, while in one classroom plaster around a window has peeled back, revealing cement and padding. Only Grade 12 pupils are currently being taught on the property, for safety reasons, says the school governing body (SGB), but News24 spotted other pupils also walking around the school yard. Many more could be seen walking in the streets nearby. SGB says the school has been closed since Monday due to the safety concerns. “They arrive early at school only to be exposed to dangers when roaming the street doing nothing. Some learners have resorted to alcohol and smoking as they have nothing to do,” said an employee at the school. Workers at the school have placed nets and barricade tape across the entry points to the walkways to prevent people from walking on them. Ground staff say they too fear walking near, under or through the concrete corridors. Parents showed News24 a letter dated May

19, 2016, in which the precarious state of the walkway is highlighted. The photocopied document has the Gauteng provincial government’s logo, suggesting the original was an official letterhead. The brief report is written by two assessors who inspected the walkways. Their “visual assessment” found that “the columns that are supporting the walkways are falling apart”. The document further states: “As per the visual assessment, the broken slab indicates that the slab and columns are not properly reinforced, and the school has put temporary hired steel scaffolding to support the falling concrete.” The assessors advise that the structure needs to be examined by a “structural engineer”. They conclude by stating that the “matter should be treated urgently to avoid accidents”. According to the SGB, the school has 1 274 pupils and this year it has accommodated 60 extra pupils with special needs. The department is planning to turn the school into a full service school to

include a technical, academic and technical occupational curriculum. Irate parents converged on the school on Thursday morning demanding answers. Evelyn Seshobela, the mother of a Grade 11 pupil, told News24 she took the day off from work to join other parents to march to Lesufi’s office on Thursday. “I am angry. For five years we have been thinking that the department will fix the problem and it doesn’t want to. The school is not safe at all. They will only act when our children are dead. We have agreed that a block of classrooms remain locked and should not be accessed as it is not safe. For the past two weeks the school gates were not locked and schoolchildren could access the school but were not let into the classrooms. However, since Monday the gates were locked and no one is allowed into the school. The SGB chairperson, Delphine Botha said the school’s walkway imposes danger as it could collapse at any time.

Ekurhuleni name changing starts as council adopts report The City of Ekurhuleni has kick-started the process of naming and renaming many landmark features in the City with names that bring honour and pride to the residents. The Ekurhuleni Council has adopted renaming of geographical features during its sitting on 21 February 2019. Among features to be renamed are the Germiston Theatre, which will be named after the late artist and actor Dumi Masilela. He was widely known as S’fiso Ngema in the South Africa’s musical drama series, Rhythm City. This series is currently aired on Etv and its storyline focuses on young people trying to make it in the cut throat music industry. The series attracts viewership of over three million people per episode. Sadly, Masilela lost his life in a tragic hi-jacking attempt in August 2017 in Tembisa. He was an inspiration for young people and a beacon hope for those, who due to their disadvantaged background, grow up with odds stacked against them. He achieved success as a professional soccer player, a musician and an actor in one lifetime. The Voortrekker Street that off-ramp from R21 freeway in Kempton Park is proposed to be named after Ekurhuleni-born struggle veteran who had nominated the name

Ekurhuleni when the City itself was going through a naming process – Amon Ngulele. Mr Ngulele was a unionist and SACP leader who became a chief whip of Council at the then Kempton Park Municipality (Khyalami Metro) after the first local democratic elections in 1995. He passed away in 2003. Among other proposed names that were adopted by Council, include: • Barbara Road (R24) – Lazarus Mawela: 1976 students uprising activist who is a founding member of the Black People Convention, a predecessor to the United Democratic Front (UDF). He was also a former Councillor at the then Lethabong Municipality following the first local democratic elections in 1995. • New Library in Tsakane – Mpho Rahab Molepo Library: Among leading women who participated in the 1956, pass law resistance march, and a renowned community leader in the 1980s. • Tokoza (R59) – Dumisa Ntuli: He was involved in establishing the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in Katlehong, Vosloorus and surrounding towns in 1983. He led COSAS until it was banned in 1985. He was an active member of UDF in his community and spent three years in detention at Modderbee Prison

for his political activities. He served as the Spokesperson of both of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and ANC in Gauteng. • Holfontein/Etwatwa(N12) – Richard Mhlongo: He led East Rand Student Congress, ERASO and DASCO. He was part of the MKMVA underground machinery and similarly involved in the establishment of Daveyton Civic Organisation. • Tom Jones Road (N12) – Amina Cachalia: She began campaigning against Apartheid and racial discrimination as a teenager. She became a women’s rights activist, often focusing on economic issues, such as financial independence for women. She spent fifteen years under house arrest throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She was the Treasurer of the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw), a leading supporter of the Federation of Transvaal Women, and a member of both the Transvaal Indian Youth Congress and Transvaal Indian Congress during the Apartheid era. • Edenvale (N12) – Lungile Mtshali: She started her political activities in the union where she became a shop-steward for SACCAWU in the late 1980s while working at OK-Bazaar in Germiston until 1996. She was part of the national negotiating team

for living wages and working conditions. Her activism continued beyond unions as a member of both the ANC and ANCWL. She served as a member of the Ekurhuleni ANC regional committee from 1995, then later elected as a Councillor, which led to her becoming Deputy Chairperson of Gauteng SALGA. • Gilloolys Interchange (N12) – George Bizos: During the Apartheid years, Bizos dedicated his working life to fight for the basic Human Rights. After the collapse of apartheid, he turned his fight into ensuring that all South Africans equally enjoy those rights enshrined and guaranteed by the Constitution. In his legal career, he represented many political activists in high profile political trials, including Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela in the Rivonia Trial. In total, there are 42 proposed names. These names proceed to the public consultation process with advertisements in the local media for comments and objections, while public hearings and constituency meetings organized and facilitated by Councilors will also be held. Comments and inputs will be consolidated for further submission to the Council for approval.

Bracken High School

TRENDING FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS We are all sick of seeing videos of teachers or school students doing horrendous things. That’s why when we saw this video was trending, we scrolled past thinking it was another bad video. Eventually, someone in the office pointed out that we should actually watch the video because it was so much more than we thought. We watched it and realised if we made the assumption many others might have done so too. Mr Tewson is the creative arts and design teacher. He started his career at the school 13 years ago as an assistant teacher. Now 34 years old, he says encouraging his learners is key. He started his rant knowing that the students would whip out their phones to record it. Little did the class know, he was about to shout out in the best way possible. He walks to one of his Grade 10 students and shouts “What is this?” She responds, a little caught out by nerves, saying “It is my work, sir.” That is when Tewson shouts back “This is absolutely brilliant!” He pages through her art book and then shouts, “This is incredible! Go to the front! Go to the front so we can clap!” The student bounces to the front of the class while being cheered on by her classmates. In an interview with TimesLIVE, he confirmed that he really wanted to make a positive impact and inspire his students to do well in school and life. “Lately, students across the world have been trying to catch teachers ranting or

The sentencing of notorious gangster Fransisco Miller The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has welcomed the sentencing of the 28-year-old notorious gangster, Fransisco Miller, to an effective prison sentence of 40 years. He was convicted of three counts of murder and other gang related offences within Sophiatown policing precinct, Johannesburg. The sentencing took place on Monday at the South Gauteng High Court. Miller pleaded guilty on three counts of murder for which he was handed a 30-year sentence per murder, at-

shouting in class at any moment. I just created a twist and made it positive. We had a good laugh after they put down their phones. “Teaching techniques have to change and adapt. What worked yesterday might not work today, so I keep the kids on their toes. They never know what to expect. In that way I know they will be paying attention. And humour goes a long way, especially if you have to teach something less interesting.” Marthie Kruger, the deputy principle of Bracken High School commented on the video, praising Tewson for his teaching method. “It seems as if negative publicity regarding education is the norm nowadays. It is refreshing to see something positive getting so much attention,” said Kruger. “We are proud that one of our staff members took this initiative and hope that this motivates other educators to remain positive in a negative press environment.”

Earthquake strikes Gauteng leaving many shocked

Residents of Johannesburg started Friday morning, 1 March with a small-scale earthquake, also labelled as a tremor. It has been reported by several seismologists that the tremor took place at 6:56 SAST, with some institutions measuring it at 4.6 on the Richter Scale. People took to social media to share their experiences, with reports of the quake being felt in Krugersdorp, Soweto and Roodepoort: According to CEI Seismologia – the Mexican earthquake research team who provide live global updates of tremors – this earth-moving incident had a range of 102 kilometres. It’s reported that six stations based in the area also recorded the geological phenomenon. As it stands, no serious injuries or deaths have been reported. The quake itself managed to trigger several warning systems,

including Chile’s “Alerta App”. The South American country is used as a hub for seismic investigation, and they were quick to report the news. Their warning simply reads: “Earthquake in progress in South Africa”. According to eyewitnesses, the tremors didn’t last any longer than 15 – 30 seconds. Any earthquake that rates between 4.0 – 4.9 on the Richter Scale can be classed as a “light” one – that’s one step above minor, and one below moderate. However, local instruments have suggested that the quake itself was actually a tremor – a term given to events that don’t rate highly on the aforementioned scale. Gauteng’s weather services later revised the total to 3.7 in magnitude (making it a minor instead of light), confirming the epicentre was in Randfontein.

Suspect arrested on Roy Campbell Street Fox Reaction members after he broke a gate motor trying to gain access to property. The owner of the house heard a noise and he investigated. He alerted the Fox Control room after he spotted the suspect. The suspect was caught a few minutes later by Fox Reaction members and was handed over to Brackendowns SAPS.

The latest on how to deal with aging security systems

As with all electronics, security systems will age and suffer from wear and tear. Unlike other electronics, a security system needs to be operational at all times because your safety lies in the balance. So realistically how long should your security system last and when should you call in the experts to either repair or replace it? Johan Joubert, Products Manager Fidelity-ADT, says the current lifespan for consumer electronics is around 4.5 years. “We do, however, see a trend in security that people tend to keep their alarm system for an average of 7 years. Electronic components and cables age and deteriorate which causes unreliable behavior.” He suggests repairing and maintaining the peripheral devices such as passive infrared detectors or outdoor beams for the first 4.5 years and then considering an upgrade. “This not only improves reliability but also features as technology improves,” he says. But what are homeowners facing cost wise to replace rather than repair? Joubert says it’s important to remember that very few suppliers still do component level repairs. The component will either be replaced or exchanged. “In terms of cost, most devices are covered by a warranty for an initial period which is typically one year. In this pe-

riod there is no cost to the end user for repair or replacement, unless the failure is due to lightning or power-related issues. As the supplier, however, we need to weigh the cost of shipping products internationally for repair versus the replacement cost. In most cases we do get a small allowance from suppliers in the form of an oversupply to cover in-warranty failures. Nowadays, out-of-warranty failure means buying a new device which will be more cost-effective.” He says that if you are moving into a new house it is not always easy to know the age of the security system already installed. “We do a full system check before we link any new home-owner customer. It is imperative that this is done in order to make sure you do not have an overactive alarm system. If the security professional finds that the system is outdated or discontinued, or there is no support available, I would highly recommend replacing it.” “At the end of the day an alarm system is only effective if it is reliable. Speak to a professional and ask about your options in terms of repairing versus replacing. You need to weigh up the cost of the repair, how long the repaired part will last be compared to a new part, and so on. Your safety is worth investing in,” concludes Joubert.

Man tries to sell dagga at Randhart Shopping Centre

On Tuesday, 26 February, the Fox Security’s control room received a call about a suspicious person wandering around the shopping centre in Randhart. Both reaction and tactical units responded to investigate. The suspect was approached and searched and it was found that he was looking for potential customers as he was selling drugs. The suspect was in possession of two bags of dagga. Officers arrested him and handed him over to Alberton SAPS.

Primrose SAPS share their successful arrests The Primrose police arrested 19 suspects between February 20 and 27. This is according to the latest arrest statistics released by the station. The accused were charged with a number of different offences. Charges included murder, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of a dangerous weapon, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, common assault, malicious damage to property, rape, dealing in liquor without a licence, fraud and shoplifting. The Primrose SAPS station commander, Col Albertina Vesi, thanked everyone who contributed to the successful arrests. Most of the suspects appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where their cases were postponed for various reasons, while others paid admission of guilt fines at the station and were released.

Six arrested for speeding EMPD High-Speed Unit members arrested six motorists for excessive speeding, last Sunday. On the N12 highway eastbound between the R59 turn-off and the Voortrekker Road exit, five motorists were arrested between 5am and 11am. Additionally, during their afternoon operation at about 2pm on the N3 highway northbound near Gillooly’s Interchange, one driver was arrested. On the N12 the five motorists caught were speeding in the range of 161 to 171km/h. “They were all males, driving in four sedans and an LDV, aged between 25 and 50 years old, citing the usual reasons for being late for an aeroplane or an appointment,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD. The five arrestees were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Alberton Police Station, but later released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

The event will be held in Potchefstroom on 13 March. Löfstrand started running cross country while she was at primary school before she moved over to track running when she proceeded to high school.

I ran my 800m personal best time of 2:01 in 2017, the same year that I competed in my first senior World Championship, making the semifinal. “Although 800m is my main event, I sometimes run 400m just for speed work. “I am excited to be a PUMA Ambassador. “The PUMA School of Speed Series is such a great platform for up and coming athletes to showcase their talent and all the hard work that they have put into their sport,” explained Löfstrand. “The meets are well organized, well supported and just super exciting to be a part of. The Series gives athletes from all over the country something to work towards and look forward to, a reason to pursue athletics. “I believe that Puma is becoming a powerful force in helping grow athletics in South Africa. I am looking forward to the final two meets, the PUMA School of Speed #4 in Pretoria and the PUMA School of Speed #5 in Potchefstroom. Junior track and field stars can look forward to meeting Gena Löfstrand in the Vice Principal’s office at the PUMA School of Speed #4 (LC de Villiers Sportsground / Pretoria) and PUMA School of Speed #5 (Puk McArthur Stadium / Potchefstroom). All entrants will stand a chance to be scouted and contracted to the PUMA Squad. The contract will be for the duration of one calendar year. Those who finish among the top three in both events will be presented with medals, tees, peak caps and other goodies.
