- Jane is going to regret ever saying anything…to anyone.
By: Kay Evans
The Rumour is Lesley Kara’s debut novel, published in 2019 and it is a thoroughly enjoyable, twisty and compelling thriller. When single mum Jane shares a rumour at the school gates - desperate to impress and wiggle herself in with the clique of mothers at her son’s new school - there is no going back and leads to some drastic spiraling. Rumour has it that a notorious child
killer is living under a new identity, in their sleepy little town of Flinsteadon-Sea. Sally McGowan was just at an innocent age of ten when she stabbed little Robbie Harris to death, over 47 years ago - no photos of her exist since her release as a young woman. But why is that? So, who is the supposedly reformed killer who now lives among them? And does this person really live among them and pick up her child

Accident in Mayberry Park leaves one injured
A royal affair
CHARITABLE PRINCESS CHARLENE OF MONACO HOSTS ROYAL RACE DAY It doesn’t always have to be a knight in shining armour who rescues a princess. Sometimes the princess can be the one doing the rescuing. When it comes to our very own Princess Charlene of Monaco, that is exactly how the story has unfolded so far, and on 13 April, the next chapter in the fairy-tale will be written. Hosting the Royal Race Day at Turffontein, HSH Charlene, Princess of Monaco, will once again ensure that Gugulesizwe Primary School and Lesabe Primary School in Benoni will be the main beneficiaries, receiving a donation of R50,000 each. The Princess launched her Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation at the Gugulesizwe Primary School grounds in 2012. She has also donated her childhood swimming medals to the school to inspire young learners who have an interest in pursuing a swimming career. On her most recent visit to South Africa in February this year, Princess Charlene, who hails from Benoni, also visited the school, accompanied by her children, the royal four-year-old twins Princess Gabriella and hereditary Prince Jacques. “I have taken a personal interest in the school and I will support them and do my best to make sure that the learners at the school are exposed to great sports, health and safety, so that they can build a great community around
them,” she said. A number of learners from these two schools will be hosted at Turffontein on the Royal Race Day where they will play a significant role in welcoming Princess Charlene on her arrival. The Royal Race Day is an annual event held in honour of Princess Charlene at the Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg and as always it will feature a very strong charity component focusing on children. “I look forward to attending this year’s Royal Race Day at the historic Turffontein Racecourse and, of course, continuing the support of a number of worthy causes,” she said. “To have the horse-racing community rally behind this is quite extraordinary. “Hopefully the day will also contribute to restoring some of the glamour back into the sport of racing.” Learners from Park Senior Primary School, Turffontein Primary, Die Mossie Primary School, Highveld Primary and Rosettenville Primary in the Turffontein-area will also be hosted on the day, where the focus will be on family entertainment and, of course, the sport of kings, with the running of the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes for fillies and mares over 1600m with total stakes of R1,000,000, as well as two Maiden Plates, of which one is for fillies and mares only, with total stakes of R250,000 each and sponsored by Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Alberton Optometrist takes up the fight against Glaucoma
Zelda van Coller Optometrists offered free Glaucoma screenings to people in Alberton until the end of March 2019, in honor of Glaucoma week that took place from 10 to 16 March 2019 globally. Glaucoma forms part of a group of eye diseases that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve sends information from the eyes to the brain. If not treated in time, visual damage can deteriorate and can lead to blindness, says Zelda van Coller, Owner and Optometrist at Zelda van Coller Optometrists Dynamic Vision.
See an optometrist if you experience the following signs of Glaucoma: • Hazy or blurred vision • The appearance of rainbow-colored circles around bright lights. • Severe eye and head pain • Nausea or vomiting (accompanying severe eye pain) • Sudden sight loss “Glaucoma screenings examines changes to the optic nerve, changes to pressure of the eye fluid and changes in visual fields.” For more information on general eye care, please visit the Zelda van Coller website on www.optomzelda.co.za.

Police nab armed truck hijackers
One man was arrested by the Primrose police, with the help of the Germiston Flying Squad, while four escaped following an alleged truck hijacking, last Friday. The arrest was made on Main Reef Road in Primrose. “The truck driver told officers that his journey started in Germiston, where the truck was loaded with alcohol to the value of R1.5-million,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. “He was then escorted to Elandsfontein by a security vehicle. On the corner of Main Reef and Stanhope roads, the convoy was allegedly approached by a white BMW. “The BMW’s five male occupants allegedly opened fire on the security vehicle, puncturing all of its tyres.” Three of the suspects, all armed, then exited the vehicle, allegedly pointed a firearm at the truck’s driver and instructed him to drive the truck to the Primrose Cemetery.
“When they reached the cemetery, another truck, without a trailer, reportedly arrived and the suspects attempted to connect the trailer, filled with alcohol, to the truck,” said Maome. “It is reported that this process was hampered as the wiring between the truck and trailer did not correspond.” While the suspects were still busy, they saw the police, who had been alerted to the crime, and started running in different directions. The officers gave chase and were able to corner one of the suspects. “While searching the 37-year-old man, police found a 9mm firearm, with no serial number, and several rounds of live ammunition in his possession,” said Maome. He was arrested on charges of truck hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition. He was detained at the Primrose Police Station and will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
Drug dealer busted in Brackenhurst
Well done to the CPF members on a successful drug arrest in Brackendowns on Thursday, 4 April. The suspect was caught with 40 bags of dagga and this was confiscated and
handed over to Brackendowns SAPS. The community applauds the wonderful work done by this pro-active group, keeping the area safe of criminal elements.
Two suspects arrested in Helston Road
Husband arrested after assaulting wife A female resident of Makause informal settlement opened a case of domestic violence against her husband recently following an alleged assault. “The victim claimed the accused went out for the evening to a local tavern, while she stayed home,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. “When he came back he allegedly began shouting at her and then allegedly
assaulted her, all without provocation.” The woman managed to escape and immediately reported the matter to the Primrose police. Using the information given by the victim, officers were able to trace and arrest the suspect on a charge of domestic violence. He has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.
On Saturday, 30 March two men were arrested on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Helston Road after they robbed a man of his cellphone, wallet and other belongings. CPS Security reported that the suspects fled on foot towards Alberton City.
Their control room was contacted and reaction units were dispatched to assist. A member of the public stopped to assist the victim, which resulted in both suspects being apprehended. Both men were arrested and taken into custody by Alberton SAPS.
