GATA poised to bring prosperity INSIDE Young man dies in South Hills fire to the taxi industry THE PRECINCT WILL CONSIST OF

EDUCATION, SPORT, PUBLIC, RETAIL AND INDUSTRIAL NODES NEAR WELL ESTABLISHED TRANSPORT ROUTES AND RAILWAY STATIONS. GARIN JOEMATH garin.joemath@tametimes.co.za

On Saturday, 15 June, the grand opening of GATA’S (Greater Alberton Taxi Association) Steers and Debonairs took place at Sky City Mall. The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Small Business, Rosemary Capa. The day was filled with a lot of excitement as GATA cut the ribbon of their new venture with their shareholders and community members in and around Palm Ridge, Katlehong and Sky City. GATA and their partners Cosmopolitan, GMI, Bligvest, Halfway Toyota, Famous Brands, Taxi Times and KASI FM aim to bring prosperity to the taxi industry through the formalisation of structures within an otherwise informal sector. The first step towards the realisation of the prosperity dream was to establish a company which all taxi owners are a part of, namely GATA Group. GATA Group will then invest in various ventures to generate profits for shareholders, the first of which is the Steers and Debonairs. This is a very exciting development for the taxi industry as a whole. Customers can expect to visit an exciting new Sky City Mall in the South of Johannesburg and enjoy GATA’s exciting new restaurants, with the same great flavour everyone has become accustomed to. The Sky City Mall was launched earlier this year and has a Shoprite and Cashbuild as anchors, serving 44 780 households. Future phases to the Mall

will bring it to a total of 44 000m2 GLA. A further 10 365m2 is available for Big box retail, food courts and a gym. A site has also been earmarked for a private hospital. tame TIMES understands that 13 000 homes are currently being developed. The future Sky City resident will have an income between R11 000 and R50 000 and 75% employed in the formal sector. A further 8 000 houses will be developed by Ekurhuleni council & private developers. The precinct will consist of education, sport, public, retail and industrial nodes near well established transport routes and railway stations. Deputy Minister of Small Business,

Rosemary Capa addressed the GATA Group and their partners and congratulated them on the grand opening of the two food shops. Capa also personally thanked them for wanting to reach out to make a difference in the community and in the taxi industry. She also pleaded with GATA to also use the two shops to be a blessing by providing job opportunities to the unemployed and she believes that this is the beginning of a great start for government and GATA’S partnership. tame TIMES congratulates the GATA Group along with their partners and wishes them all the best.

Young man dies in South Hills fire

tame TIMES has received information that a 27-year-old young man has died in a house fire on the evening of the 11th June. The young man identified Ramano Pieterson stayed for three years in a garage at the back of the municipal flats in Northern place, South hills. Ward 57 Faeeza Chame went to speak to

the deceased man’s parents to offer her condolences they were clearly saddened by the death of their son. A case had been opened at the Moffatview SAPS. Three cars has also been damaged due to the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage.

The Beauty in Celebrating all Fathers this Father’s Day! FATHER The corner stone of the family. A tower of respect and admiration. His wife at his side. His children before him. Lovingly cherished by his family. Through his words of wisdom and encouragement, his children grow in knowledge and are blessed to have him. Exercising his right to maintain peace, balance and harmony. Guiding and instructing his little ones. Sacrificing his life for family. Providing shelter and sustenance so that all may survive. He contemplates and marvels at his greatest achievement, a family, the monument to his life. A great treasure without measure. Protecting, caring and nurturing his greatest asset for the benefit of his lineage. Making sure that all is safe. Till, he takes his last breathe. Our friend, Our father, He is our Dad By Armand Dunk

passed on to all earthly father’s for generations to come, therefore, you to have been made a perfect father. On this special day I would like to honor you for everything you are and all that you do. You are a pillar of strength and appointed to lead. May your footsteps continue to exemplify a good life (2 Corinthians 3:2-3) Scripture teachers us that who we are and how we live is like a “letter from God”. Our kids read that letter every day. Remember, we might only celebrate Father’s Day once a year but you are a father every other day. I would also like to honor our single moms today. The mother who has to be a father to her children too. May you be blessed in abundance and may God be your strength during those difficult times. You are doing the best you can and for that you deserve to be celebrated. To our Dad’s in Heaven, we cherish you always, we carry you in our hearts and will forever be grateful for the opportunity of having you in our lives and calling you dad.

I chose this poem because I find it so profound as a direct indication of the perfect Father God is. This is His legacy

Amputee runner, Xolani Luvuno inspired all of South Africa as he pursued his dream of completing the 2019 Comrades Marathon on crutches, even though marathon organisers denied him entry. The determined athlete completed the 2018 Comrades on crutches with 5 hours of extra time (and even took on the Ironman earlier this year) however was denied entry for the 2019 marathon! But that did not stop the incredibly talented South African who chose to run next to the route, without any support vehicles, refusing to give up on his dream! “Xolani’s vest today, honouring the children of Ethembeni school and others who have made him count his own blessings…. What an amazing young man! “And yes, he is running in a 2018 number. Xolani was granted permission to run in 2018 but denied permission in 2019. They tried to stop him from starting last night. After about 35 km while it was still pitch dark, he was forced by the traffic police to run on the pavement and without his support vehicles. “Show them Xolani, our battle to run was worth it…” Runners who passed Xolani all offered him support and recognised him for his Nicolle Shedden Weir posted: “Xolani you’re a legend! Well done for enduring u have inspired all of us with your never give up attitude and a happy smile.” Dietlyn Bekker said: “What an absolute privilege to watch you today Xolani you are an inspiration to all! Congratulations!” Marlene Raubenheimer Van Rooyen commented: “Respect Xolani! You are an amazing athlete! And we love you!!!”

School host carnival for disadvantaged children

We asked the community...

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON SCHOOL VIOLENCE IN OUR SOCIETY? Darren August shares his view:

The Johannesburg Junior Council (JJC) and Johannesburg Mini Council (JMC) hosted their annual Dean Walt Kids carnival at Edenglen High School. On Sunday, 26 May 2019, more than 350 disadvantaged children gathered on the fields of Edenglen High School and had a blissful time with the council. The children had received lunch, party packs, juice and certainly had an amazing day. The JMC set up stalls to entertain the children with activities such as face painting, creating beautiful necklaces, fish ponds, etc. “They absolutely had

fun” said one of the caretakers of the children’s home. The aim of the Johannesburg Junior Council is to impact in volumes by choosing service over silence and this event is one of the many steps taken by the council to fulfill their goal for 2019. Amongst this council that consists of 42 schools throughout the corners of Johannesburg, unity, leadership, love and hard work are the foundations at which the 92 year old council strives upon.

Assumption girls perform well in Creative Arts Festival Congratulations to the Assumption Convent School girls who participated in the drama section during the Creative Arts Festival. The standard was exceptionally high and all the girls were all well prepared. They presented their work with excellence.

What we are seeing in our schools is absolutely outrageous and we cannot allow it to continue. It can no longer only be the responsibility of the government. School is a reflection of society and as society, all of us who know better, need to do better. We can start with the little things like confronting the little kids we see fighting in the park or on their way home after school. We can start by appreciating and supporting teachers more. We can start by just doing something!

Rugail Mohako shares her view:

Violence in schools is one of the biggest problems we as communities and schools are facing in the 21st Century. It terrifies us as the parents daily to know we put our children and family members in a position to get hurt at a place that was supposed to feel like a second home, or in this case a safe haven. It is important for us as the parents and family member to take charge of the problem, the problem won’t change or get better if we sit back and look from the outside, when we know that the little we do can have a big impact on the situation. The little we do, can change an innocent child’s life. Violence is never the answer, but rather the question. Just make sure your Answer is positive.

Akueiah Bwalya shares her view:

Children have too much time on their hands and too much freedom. Disciplinary measures must be put in place and taken more seriously. Searching the children and stripping them off of any inappropriate tools is important. That includes scissors as part of the stationery. Teachers must take charge when handing out learning material that isn’t cut or ready for pasting in. More sports activities could be considered as part of curriculum eg. Fitness training.

As a young adult who attended a government high school, I unfortunately witnessed fights or school violence between rival schools and fellow pupils. I sit & listen to the reports about the recent increase in school violence & I wonder how the parents of those children cope. You are sending your child to school to get an education, you think they are safe, suddenly you receive that call that your child was involved in some sort of gang fight, maybe not even a gang fight but just general violence or abuse that took place at school. You don’t know the state of injuries or any further information regarding your child till you arrive at the school. Imagine getting to the school to know your child has been killed by another pupil or is in hospital? Most of the time these incidents happen after school, and often the blame falls on the principal or teacher. However, we cannot sit & point fingers at the principal/teachers when the parents aren’t pulling their weight at home. The home environment plays a major role in school violence. It’s a fact that violent behaviour as simple as punching and kicking are often learned from observing others or being exposed to such behaviour which means violence comes down to the background or the way in which a child has been raised not based on adult supervision during or after school. Communities with high rates of crime and drug use also teach youth the violent behaviors’ that are carried into schools. At the end of the day it comes down to the environment our children are being exposed to and the change should start there. Kids who have dysfunctional behavior could use a boxing punching bag to vent rather than venting off on a fellow pupil. Programs should be instituted that will involve pupils in more communication and community work. Assign them as leaders, eg. Have a program that focusses on character development adopt the olden day programs where search of talent is more a curriculum than social.

And we want to hear it!

INFLUENTIAL ARTIST

LAUNCHES ART GALLERY IN THE SOUTH

Sentenced to death for drug trafficking at the age of 34, with his sentence commuted to life imprisonment (equivalent to 100 years) in return for a guilty plea, Shani’s story and how his art evolved is truly inspiring.

SPEAKING TO SHANI, TAME TIMES LEARNED THAT SHANI IS DIVERSE IN HIS OWN STYLE OF ART AND HAS NO PARTICULAR CULTURE OR TARGET AUDIENCE THAT HE WANTS TO SELL TO BUT PROVIDE ART WORK FOR EVERYONE. GARIN JOEMATH garin.joemath@tametimes.co.za

tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet Shani Krebs, an influential artist with a riveting background. Not only does he have an art gallery at the Mall of the South which he launched two weeks ago but has an autobiography and also mentors students at the Gallery to better their artistic skills. Sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Thailand at the age of 34, with his sentence commuted to life imprisonment (equivalent to 100 years) in return for a guilty plea, Shani’s story and how his art evolved is truly inspiring. Finally released and returned to South Africa after 18 years of being incarcerated in five different prisons where he was subjected to the most horrendous and dehumanising conditions imaginable. Here he evolved spiritually, rehabilitated himself and developed his artistic skills that surpassed his wildest dreams. His state of mind fluctuated between periods of deep, dark depression to the point of almost wanting to commit suicide. Through his faith in God he developed the ability to transcend his reality during which he encountered an out of body experience, claiming to enter the spiritual realm where he says: “I was touched by angels”. He further adds that his talent was a blessing, instead of destroying lives with drugs to redeem himself he began to paint portraits of people bringing joy into their lives. Having no art materials Shani initially designed and fashioned his own paintbrushes by cutting the bristles from a toothbrush and attaching them to a bamboo stick. He then diluted coffee and made birthday greeting cards for other prisoners. In the early years his creations were only drawn in black ballpoint pen, the colour black symbolising his oppression and confinement. Then in January 1999 he was shackled and thrown into solitary confinement, for the first time in his entire life he felt free, a freedom of a contrasting nature and here he managed to organise an A4 drawing pad and basic water colours. Using the faint light that filtered into his cell from the corridor, Shani expressed himself by painting in colour. From thereon he developed and broadened

his technique. For works like these to be produced under normal circumstances in a bright, ventilated, well equipped studio would be remarkable in itself. Shani was not only forced to work in cramped conditions with no facilities or equipment. To worsen matters, temperatures averaging 35 – 40 degrees C for most of the year and a humidity factor of 90%, drawing and painting was made all the more complex and challenging. As time passed, family and friends were able to arrange materials for him, making that aspect of his art a little easier. The works on display are a small collection of his multitude of drawings and paintings done in prison, which range from black and white and colour abstracts to amazing life like portraits, with different works reflecting his state of mind during that period of his imprisonment. Speaking to Shani, tame TIMES learned that Shani is diverse in his own style of art and has no particular culture or target audience that he wants to sell to but provide art work for everyone. “There is something for everybody and I am targeting people who love art. I also find that there is a huge appreciation out here for art work in the South and I look forward to working out here because there is no other art gallery out here in the South,” said Shani. Besides his completed works, Shani’s art is now in great demand and is being commissioned by people from all over South Africa and abroad, to complete specific works using the same skills and techniques which he developed in prison. Artist, poet, motivational speaker and author – Shani published his autobiography in 2014 entitled “DRAGONS AND BUTTERFLIES”. It is a fascinating, insightful and absorbing read and not to be missed! Discussions are also underway for the production of a movie. To commission a personal work, please contact Shani: Mobile: 078 6659 656 Email: shanikrebs@hotmail.com

Devin Hitchings has City arrests three Corrupt police officials endless opportunities

FILE IMAGE THE ACCUSED HAD CLAIMED THAT THEY WERE IN THE POSSESSION OF A DOSSIER CONTAINING EVIDENCE OF ALLEGED CORRUPTION AND MALFEASANCE COMMITTED BY MMC MPYA AMONGST OTHERS. On Wednesday, 12 June an intelligencedriven joint operation between South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) arrested three police officials who were attempting to extort money from the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in charge of Human Settlement Cllr Lesiba Mpya. The accused had claimed that they were in the possession of a dossier containing evidence of alleged corruption and malfeasance committed by MMC Mpya, Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina, City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi and other senior political figures within the Region. The accused demanded that MMC Mpya pay an amount of R5 million in order for them to make the dossier disappear. Upon receiving these demands, MMC Mpya approached the police and opened a case of extortion and corruption against the three police officials, case registered 163/06/2019. The SAPS and EMPD proceeded to set up a joint intelligence operation in which the accused were investigated and a sting operation was formulated in order to apprehend the accused. On the evening of Wednesday, 12 June, MMC Mpya participated in a sting operation where he made a money drop

off at a venue prescribed by the three accused. Upon handing over the money to the accused, police authorities pounced on the three police officials and arrested them. The investigations into the three police officials revealed that they were connected to a string of anonymous WhatsApp messages that went viral in March 2019, that made false claims of corrupt activity being undertaken by the Administration of Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina and Senior Management staff of the City. It was found that messages were being used as an attempt to intimidate Mayor Masina and MMC Mpya into paying their R5 million demand. “We must commend the swift and effective response by both the SAPS and EMPD in apprehending these three corrupt police officials in our City. I am glad that today, the truth is finally being unveiled on a malicious and incendiary plot to distract this administration from continuing to deliver quality services to our people. We are now fast closing in on City Officials and other individuals involved in these unscrupulous acts of corruption and extortion. The City of Ekurhuleni remains steadfast in its zero-tolerance approach to corruption, and we expect to make more arrests in the near future,” said Mayor Masina. The three accused will appeared in court on Thursday, 13 June 2019. The names of the accused have been withheld pending their court appearance.

Coming across a story on the Primrose CPF Facebook page about a young man named Devin Hitchings (20) who has been awarded the Purple Heart SA for his outstanding bravery volunteer work. Devin Hitchings, a Primrose resident, believes that a person is brave when they do something that scares the hell out of them. “This could be getting out of bed and facing the day or it could be someone running into a dangerous situation to save a life,” Hitchings told Purple Hearts SA. Hitchings explained that life had not been easy for him. At the age of 9 his parents had gotten a divorce. “I had seen my mom in ICU with cancer receiving chemotherapy. In August 2010, my mom was in a near-fatal accident when a vehicle had collided with her. At age 13, my mom would leave when it was dark and come back after dark, after a long day on the road as a sales representative. I would walk home from school every day and the the moment I got home, I would start with the garden, do washing, cooking and then prepare my mothers bath so that when she gets home she can

relax, enjoy a bath and have a good meal. I know that she works extremely hard and I will forever thankful for her sacrifices she has made for me,”said Hitchings. The turning point in Devin’s life began in 2016 when his stepfather committed suicide in front of him and his mother. “In 20 years I have felt rejection, hate, shame, fear, guilt, sadness, depression, despair, envy, doubt, jealousy and frustration. I made a decision to use my life to make a difference,” added Hitchings. Today, he is part of South Africas’ Search and Rescue specialising in missings persons, medical rescues and other endeavours. tame TIMES understands that he is also involved with the Primrose Community Policing Forum, the Edenvale SAPS and the CPF Youth Desk, where he is the vice chairperson. Whenever possible, Devin also volunteers at the Joburg Gen Trauma Unit. His current job is as an E.M.D for a mediacl company in Johannesburg. “I want to encourage other young people who have been through difficult things that they can make a difference,” said Hitchings. The Primrose CPF are proud and honoured to have Devin among their ranks.

Suspect arrested for suspicious powder Officers from the Primrose Police Station recently received a tip-off from the community. “Police were told about a group of people sitting in a shack allegedly doing drugs,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. Officers travelled to the address provided to them. “When they arrived, they introduced

themselves and asked to search everyone in the shack. “During the search they found a 28-yearold man in the possession of a suspicious powder,” said Maome. He was arrested on a charge of possession of drugs. He will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

The clash on the St Benedicts astro came about after both teams notched up six wins during the Easterns league season. The match was a sew-saw affair with both teams scoring two goals each, with the Marais Viljoen teams, after a team

effort scoring the winning goal, just a few minutes shy of the end of the game. Two girls hockey teams, the u.16 and u. 15 teams have also qualified for the prestigious North of the Vaal tournament after they came first and second in the respective age groups Easterns leagues.

South African duo claim first positions at this year’s comrade

South African runners Edward Mothibi and Gerda Steyn won the 94th Comrades Marathon that took place in Durban on Sunday, 9 June. Mothibi won the men’s race and Steyn won the woman’s race. Mothibi finished fourth in the 2018 Comrades Marathon which was his first to participate in Bongumusa Mthembu who won last year’s Comrade finished second in this year’s edition of the marathon. The 94th edition of the ultramarathon spans 89km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. 2019 Comrades Marathon winner Mothibi expressed his excitement after his win: “I am very happy, I am excited. All I have to say is, thank you to the people who have supported me through thick and thin.” Whilst Gerda Steyn was the first woman to get to the finish line this year after she finished in the second place last year. Steyn made a time of 5:58:53. This time meant that Steyn broke a 13 year old record set by Russian Elena Nurgalieva of 6.09.24. “I feel so blessed; I cannot believe that this dream came true for me today. It’s all thanks to God because today I had strength that I don’t know where it came from,” she said. She further said that her comrade record victory was sweeter because she narrowly missed the record of 06:09:23

at the Two Ocean ultra-marathon. “I am happy I broke the record on the most important run race which is the comrade marathon but that was not on my mind”In an interview with David O’Sullivan on the Kaya fm breakfast show following their comrade triump both athletes emphasised the importance of having a proper preparation. “Athletes must take proper care of their bodies for their recovery process to be easy and smooth. You must watch what you eat healthy food manage your diet with care,” said Steyn “I went to the comrade with one think in mind, which was to finish in the top 10. I did not think I will win the race but it happened because I did not give up I just run my normal split but when I got to the last 8 km I started believing because I realised I was still going with the same pace,” said Mothibi
