Germiston model to participate in Vancouver Fashion Week
Aimee Botes is a Germiston resident who attends the National School of the Arts, Johannesburg, where she majors in Dance. Additionally, she studies Drama, and Rock ‘n Pop Vocals through Trinity College, London. She is also an independent model who has made strides in the industry in her young career. In 2014, she auditioned for a local talent contest, IATS, which in turn led to her being invited to perform in front of agents in Florida, USA at the ARTS convention in July of 2015. She modeled for Uberglam School of Fashion in 2016 and 2018, and is now a brand ambassador for Jess Scholtz’ Skeleton Key Couture. She is currently an independent model and has trained with Figures Models, Alberton. In 2018, Aimee was part of the Miss Signature Top 10 finalist competition, where she was
the youngest to place in the Top 5 and was awarded Miss Photogenic. She has been a cast member for the musicals ‘Once on this Island’, ‘We will rock you’ and ‘The Wiz’, and was a member of the Jozi Youth Dance Company for their 2015 and 2016 seasons. In 2017, she was a member of the Unity SA formation team that competed in Germany and Poland for Show Dance, Jazz and Modern dance. Aimee was involved in the film ‘Trailer Made’ (2016) as well as two short films, ‘Be the change’ (2017), and ‘Slumber Party’ (2018). She is in post-production for ACT Film’s ‘The Construct’ (2020) and ‘R-Cade’ (2021). Aimee has been invited to walk Vancouver Fashion Week, Spring/Summer 2020 as a brand ambassador for Jessica Scholtz’ Skeleton Key Couture for her Obsidian Collection, taking place from 7 - 13 October
2019. It is a huge honour for Aimee to have been selected as a brand ambassador for such a wonderful, talented up-and-coming designer such as Jess, who was recently also invited to London Fashion Week! Although Aimee is really excited to attend, she is seeking any brand collaboration to help pay for her flight and accommodation while in Vancouver as she is currently an independent model. There are estimated to be close on 30 000 industry professionals attending this prestigious event! Any local businesses or philanthropists that are eager to get their name out into the Canadian market place can direct their calls to Vanessa Botes on 082 5745104.

Creative Academy spent time with dads
A NOTE FROM THE
EDITOR As we enter a new month and a new season, and with South Africans experiencing economic and social negativity, my thoughts run towards how we can make a difference to change the world around us. In our community I have learned from a lot of people that are consistently part of making a difference and changing the world around us. Many people, in trying to discover what it really takes to change the world, find that you do not have to be an Einstein or Superman. You simply need to reach out to one person. I encourage each and every individual to live with this motto in mind, ‘Each one reach one’. Make a difference this month and in this season.
On Thursday, 13 June, it was all about the Creative Academy Preschool and Baby Centre’s dads! What an awesome morning spent with the men that work so hard for their families!
The dads spent the quality time with their children mixing their own braai spice combinations and then testing it out on a choice of chicken or beef steaks that they grilled on the braai together!
Charity shop in Alberton needs donations Helping Hand’s charity shop, Ons Winkel (Alberton), is urgently looking for donations to aid in their fight against poverty in the East Rand. “We are currently experiencing a shortage of donations and need anything usable that residents want to get rid of,” says Frans Burger, owner of Ons Winkel. Anything can be donated to Ons Winkel - from clothes, furniture, antiques, kitchenware, clothes, bedding, curtains, toys, shoes, sports equipment and electrical appliances. Ons Winkel takes these goods and converts them into money used for Helping Hand’s study fund, among other things. Helping Hand’s study fund provides interest-free study loans to needy students who qualify to study further but do not have the financial means to do so. The proceeds are also used for several other Helping Hand projects
aimed at alleviating, ending and preventing poverty. “Together, and in a flash, we can all make a difference in the community; simply walk into the shop and buy or donate something. It is an ideal way to get rid of superfluous household goods, and to know that it will be used properly to make a difference in the community,” says Frans. This specific charity shop of Solidarity Helping Hand reached a milestone in March this year by being the 40th of its kind to open its doors since the initiative started in 2010 in Centurion. Ons Winkel Alberton is located at 38 Garfield Road, Alrode. Donations can be collected or delivered at the store. For more information, call Frans at 072 690 2030 or send an email to mariette@helpendehand.co.za.

The price of gasoline in South Africa will drop for the first time in sixth months in July, reducing some inflation pressure. The price of a litre of 95-octane gasoline will decrease to R15.81 a litre in the economic hub of Gauteng from midnight on July 3, compared with R16.76 in June, the Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe said Friday in an emailed statement. The wholesale
price of diesel will fall by 0.75 rand and the cost of kerosene, used for cooking, and liquid petroleum gas will also be lower. The new gasoline price will be lower than the level of July 2018, helping to stabilise inflation which was at 4.5% last month. Fuel prices in South Africa, which is an oil importing country, are influenced by international crude costs and fluctuations in the rand.

Netcare Union Hospital Family of three perishes in flames brings hope to patients On Monday, 24 June 2019, a cutting-edge new procedure, which uses ultrasound shock waves to ‘crack’ highly calcified deposits and blockages within coronary arteries, was successfully performed for the first time in Africa at Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton. The Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) procedure, as it is known, was performed on a 79-year-old Gauteng patient, who had severe coronary artery disease (CAD) and had previously suffered a heart attack. It was undertaken by a team led by interventional cardiologists, Dr Chris Zambakides and Dr Jean-Paul Theron, in the cardiovascular centre’s catheterisation laboratory at Netcare Union Hospital. Dr Zambakides and Dr Theron explain that the new Shockwave IVL procedure enabled the team to successfully clear a way through the patient’s severely calcified and blocked coronary arteries, so that these could be successfully supported with stents, which are small mesh tubes that are used to support and treat diseased and narrowed arteries. “The team is most impressed with the results we were able to achieve with the new procedure. The Shockwave IVL system will enable us to tackle even the most challenging of calcified coronary arteries, and reduces the risks associated with traditional coronary angioplasty and stenting in highly compromised cardiovascular disease patients,” says Dr Zambakides. “The patient was also immensely pleased with the results of the Shockwave IVL procedure, which took some 90 minutes to complete, and says that he almost immediately felt relief from the severe chest pains, fatigue and other debilitating symptoms he was experiencing. Indeed, as we were leaving the theatre afterwards, he surprised us all by announcing that he felt ready to go home,” he added. Dr Zambakides explains that severely calcified and diseased coronary arteries can make coronary interventions such as traditional angioplasty and stenting considerably more difficult and significantly complicates the procedure. He says not only can this be associated with higher complication rates such as rupture but also with poorer long-term outcomes. “Acutely it may be associated with stent under-expansion and in-stent restenosis [ISR], which is when a blocked artery that was opened up with angioplasty and stent becomes narrowed again. In this case, the patient had occlusions, or blockages, of between 70% and 90% in various coronary arteries.” Dr Zambakides says that due to the patient’s age and the presence of comorbidities, or
additional medical conditions, surgery was not a viable option. Cracking the calcium with a high-pressure traditional angioplasty balloon was also ruled out in favour of the new ultrasound shock wave approach because of concerns of complications due to the large amounts of calcium deposits present. “While rotablation, which involves the use of a tiny drill-like device, is suitable for grinding the calcium out of smaller vessels, it is extremely difficult to achieve the necessary pressure needed to break up severe calcifications in major coronary arteries during an angioplasty procedure,” he adds. “The Shockwave IVL system involves the use of a special integrated balloon with electrodes attached that produce localised sonic pressure waves to ‘hammer’ at the calcium on the arterial wall, and breaks it up. After this, the IVL system’s integrated balloon is expanded, making placement of the stents considerably easier and safer in these patients. As the technology safely selects and fractures the calcium, any trauma to the soft tissue is minimised.” According to Dr Zambakides, the Shockwave IVL procedure is ideal for patients with heavily calcified lesions, particularly where these deposits are thick and subintimal, or deeper down in the vessel. “The severity of calcification is not always obvious but may only be visible once you perform an angioplasty. In such an instance, instead of persevering with the angioplasty stenting procedure, we recommend now rather switching to the Shockwave IVL procedure in these types of patients, which make up about 5% of those seen by cardiologists.” Glenda Pakes, director of ParagMed, the distributors of the Shockwave IVL system in South Africa, says that to date, more than 3 000 of these procedures have been performed globally, with the bulk having been undertaken in Europe and New Zealand. According to Pakes, they have been completed in patients between the ages of 60 and 80 years with a success rate of 99%. Netcare Union Hospital’s general manager, Esmé Abrahams, congratulated Dr Zambakides and Dr Theron for successfully completing South Africa’s first Shockwave IVL procedure and “making this safer new treatment option available to our patients with advanced cardiovascular disease”. “Netcare Union Hospital’s cardiovascular centre is served by some of the leading cardiovascular specialists and has always been among the most innovative and cutting edge units of its kind in the country. We are most gratified to now be able to offer this advanced new treatment option for these complex patients,” she concluded. The procedure was undertaken by a team led by interventional cardiologists, Dr Chris Zambakides (centre) and Dr Jean-Paul Theron (left). They are with Suzanne Wallace, director: medical education and scientific communication at Shockwave Medical.
Despite the frantic intervention by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, the lives of three family members could not be saved after their home caught fire in Katlehong over the weekend. A search and rescue team found charred remains of a toddler believed to be three months old, a four- year-old boy and their mother in a burnt bedroom. “A RDP house in flames was reported and received by City of Ekurhuleni emergency life threatening Call Centre on Friday evening in Dikole section Katlehong. Firefighters from Palm Ridge and Zonkizizwe fire stations responded promptly to the scene for life saving
interventions. “On arrival, commanding flames were from the bedroom and the entire roof had already collapsed. Information received on scene stated that the family was still trapped inside. After fire extinguishment the search and rescue was conducted where the charred bodies of a toddler, a four-year-old boy and the mother aged in the mid-thirties, were found in the burnt bedroom,” said Disaster & Emergency Management Services. The cause of the fire is still the subject of an investigation however, it is alleged to have been caused by an electrical heater left unmonitored.
Lift finally functioning at Silwerkroon Old Age Home
tame TIMES went to the Silwerkroon Old Age Home where senior citizens have been without the use of their lift for a long time. Many of them had to use the stairs, and as it is an old age home, some could not manage to do so. In 2017 the senior citizens were without a lift for about ten months. The lift was then repaired and worked well until it broke again on the 3rd
December 2018. Some senior citizens were stuck in the lift and some complained that the lift also experienced more problems after power failures. The lift is functioning now and along with the residents at Silwerkroon we are thankful. tame TIMES will be speaking to some of the senior citizens at Silwerkroon to learn more about their colourful lives.

Learners donate to the SPCA
The learners of Laerskool Oosterkruin Primary School recently collected food, blankets and toys for the animals of the Germiston SPCA.
The donation was dropped off at the Germiston SPCA, earlier this month. As a reward for their kindness, the learners were allowed to wear casual clothes to school.
Glenanda Primary School values education Earlier this month, tame TIMES had the opportunity to visit Glenanda Primary School in Johannesburg South. The school makes it their tradition to raise up our South African flag every morning to symbolise the importance of education.
Glenanda School Principal, Mr King shared how they value education. “The value is in education and every morning we raise up the school flag and the South African flag to help our learners understand the value of education in our country,” said Mr King.

This sentiment was expressed by Leigh Hudson-Ingle, founder of Urban Comet, an early childhood development centre (ECD) in Plantation, Boksburg, which together with schools in Wattville (Tholulwazi Preschool, Thamboville Daycare, Humble Little Achievers and Seronhla Daycare) benefitted from Checker’s extensive support. The teachers from all five schools received training on the educational and developmental needs of preschool children, as well as the administrative roles and responsibilities of ECD practitioners. The 300 children attending these schools are also guaranteed a nutritious daily meal for the next 12 months provided by the supermarket chain. “We are certainly overwhelmed at the varied support we’ve received from Checkers through its implementation partners. From teaching programmes and educational resources for our staff by the Early Care Foundation, the feeding program via the Lunchbox Fund to providing new preschool toilets through Newkidz, Checkers
has helped us grow and develop in all the necessary areas to become a recognised and high standard ECD facility,” explains Hudson-Ingle. The toilets at Urban Comet include a separate facility for disabled learners. “The extra bathroom for children with disabilities creates the perfect inclusionary environment, which is extremely important. Having similar toilet facilities for ablebodied and disabled learners helps them understand that all children must be accommodated.” “Within a year of its launch, this initiative that seeks to empower the women at the head of ECDs has seen 54 schools and more than 3 700 children across South Africa benefiting from it. Partnerships like these are one of the ways Checkers acts for change in the communities where we trade,” says Lunga Schoeman, CSI spokesperson for the Shoprite Group. With the retailer’s support, all five schools are now well on their way to being registered with the Department of Social Development, which means that in time they will each receive state subsidies for their learners.

Courier vehicle and armed escort hijacked
On Friday, 28 June the armed escort who was escorting a courier truck was held up and taken during the robbery on Swartkoppies Road, Randhart. The courier vehicle, which he was escorting, was also hijacked and cellphones were taken. tame TIMES learned that suspects were
driving a grey Audi A4 and another vehicle. The suspects were armed with rifles. It took the vehicle tracking company and SAPS mere hours to locate the vehicles and the driver of the armed escort has been found and is safe. Emergency services were on the scene.
Fuel and interest rate cuts may boost household budgets A decrease in fuel price and interest rates may provide a boost to SA households which are under financial strain, says FNB. Earlier this year, the Bank revealed that middle-income consumers spend a quarter of their earnings to pay off interest on debt. The possibility of a decrease in fuel price was indicated in a recent forecast by the Automobile Association (AA). The AA indicated that, in July, the price of fuel may drop by 91 cents per litre of petrol while diesel and illuminating paraffin is estimated to decrease by 70 cents and 62 cents respectively. The estimated reduction is yet to be confirmed by the Department of Energy. “Transport accounts for a large portion of consumers’ spend whether one uses public transport or a private car. Following a spate of steep fuel increases in the first half of this year, many consumers will be looking forward to some financial relief to finish the year in a better position,” says Dr Christoph Nieuwoudt, CEO of FNB
Consumer. The predicted fuel price decrease may not be the only good news for consumers. In July, the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is expected to announce its decision on interest rates, and economists are optimistic about the possibility of a rate cut. “Interest rates have been stable for some time, giving consumers a level of certainty in terms of servicing debt and accumulating savings. A rate cut in the short-term will be a good incentive for consumers to rework their budgets, reduce reliance on debt by paying more or boosting their capacity to save,” he says. “From an FNB perspective, our customers can look forward to several reductions in bank fees on our entry level bank accounts. The changes we are introducing will provide significant value across our Retail continuum. In addition to eBucks, we’ll also be rewarding qualifying customers with free data, voice minutes and SMSes via FNB Connect,” concluded Nieuwoudt.
Private Prosecution Unit intervenes after Lesufi’s failure to act AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit placed pressure on Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC, as well as the SAPS after no steps were initially taken against a teacher of the AhaThuto Secondary School that allegedly raped a 14-year-old school girl. The teacher was (according to sources at the school) removed from the schoolgrounds and the police is now investigating the charge against him. Angel Ndaba, Chairperson of the school’s governing body, and Philemon Ndaba, Chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), approached the Private Prosecution Unit after allegations of rape against one of the male teachers from the school fell on deaf ears. This follows after a meeting in which the district officials indicated that they would be referring the case to the district department of education for further investigation. According to sources at the school, the district official that failed to investigate the matter and take steps against the relevant teacher, was in the meantime also demoted – thanks to continuous pressure by AfriForum. A rape case was already opened at the police against the relevant teacher in September 2018. According to Andrew
Leask, Investigator at AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, there is however no sense of urgency among the investigating officer to start with the investigation. “This alleged offence is regarded in a very serious light, seeing as an underaged child is involved and the police is especially tasked with protecting vulnerable groups such as women and children. The fact that both the police and the provincial department of education are failing to act is a horrible negligence of their duties and that is why AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit decided to intervene in the matter. The police cannot be selective with the prosecution of suspects.” The Gauteng Department of Education immediately took steps when allegations of sexual assault against a teacher of Bryanston High School surfaced earlier this year. “Why doesn’t Lesufi act with the same diligence against the offender when the victim is an orphan from a rural school? Lesufi’s trend to only become involved with issues where he can enjoy media attention is to the detriment of the most vulnerable learners that are really in need of his attention and devotion,” says Carien Bloem, AfriForum’s Project Coordinator for Education.

Man murders lover inside store before killing himself
Motorist clocks 322km/h on Johannesburg highway A motorist who clocked more than 300km/h on a Johannesburg highway will face the “full might of the law” should he be traced, Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD) said on Monday, 1st July. The video of the motorist clocking 322km/h on the R21 outside Kempton Park went viral on social media on Sunday, 30th June. It was shared by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee. It was still unclear when the video was taken, but the time on the car’s screen shows it was just after 4pm. Abramjee wrote in the tweet: “Video as received: R21 JHB. This madness must be stopped!” In the video, the car, believed to be a Nissan GTR, picks up speed from 175km/h and, within seconds, does more than
WHEN SIPHIWE CAME TO HER HOME LOOKING FOR MALEHLOHONOLO, SHE WOULD TELL HER FAMILY MEMBERS TO TELL HIM SHE IS NOT AROUND. Malehlohonolo Mokoena, a 23-yearold mother of a 5 year old boy, was shot and killed by the father of her child Siphiwe Khambule, who then proceeded to shoot and kill himself right after. The incident happened on Saturday, 22 June inside the Shoprite store in Khumalo Street, Thokoza where Malehlohonolo was working as a cashier, in full sight of the other customers and staff. “The incident happened at around 4:30 in the afternoon. Malehlohonolo had worked at Shoprite for six months. She was a bubbly person full of jokes and entertaining. The staff members are still shocked and as a result about 32 people
who witnessed the incident are receiving counselling which Shoprite provided them with. We are going to miss her as she was friendly to everyone and we were used to her,” said Lindiwe Masondo who is a store manager at Shoprite. Dieketseng Mokoena who is the older sister of Malehlohonolo said her sister was a normal person and they did not know anything about her relationship problems but when Siphiwe came to her home looking for her she would tell her family members to tell him she is not around. “The family is going to need assistance because Malehlohonolo’s son is still in crèche and he is going to be graduating in December this year and he is going to start school January next year,” said Dieketseng Mokoena. Thokoza SAPS Communication Officer Captain Buyisile Mvelase said Thokoza SAPS are investigating a case of murder
International Airport. A few seconds later, a seemingly speeding bike approaches the screen. “Let him go [biker] and then you fetch him,” a man in the passenger seat tells the driver of the car. While passing Emperors Palace, the biker puts his head down and accelerates past the car. The motorist chases the biker and passes him, while clocking 301km/h. He clocks 322km/h, before slowing down. “You just need to scheme your breaks,” the man tells the driver, before the video ends. EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendant Wilfred Kgasago said: “We can’t condone such behaviour. There is going to be an horrific accident,” adding that the department had a high-speed unit to deal with speedsters. He said when a driver who clocks more than 200km/h is arrested, metro police recommend to the SAPS that the motorist is not granted bail until the court appearance.
On Monday, 24 June, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) arrested three suspects in connection with the robbery of goods from the City’s Germiston Waste Depot. On Sunday, 23 June, the Germiston Waste Depot was robbed of items which include: vehicle tyres, office furniture, fridges, microwaves and other valuable items. Upon further investigation the EMPD uncovered that the suspects worked for a security company, which is also a registered service provider of the City. The City is currently studying the contract it holds with the service provider and has suspended all business with the company. Appropriate legal action will be taken against the company, without fear or favor. “The City will not be associated with criminals,” stated Executive Mayor

Masina. “Last year we launched Operation O Kae Molao with the intent of cracking down on criminality within the City. We are now currently moving towards making weekly arrests of internal and external acts of criminality in our City. Service providers must be warned that they are appointed to provide a service that is supposed to uplift communities in Ekurhuleni. Our stance remains the same, no acts of criminality will be tolerated by the City. We hope the courts make an example of these individuals, so that any other service providers who has ideas of robbing the City, think twice!” said Executive Mayor Masina. The suspects are currently being held at the Germiston Police Station. Their court appearance date is yet to be confirmed.

A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Primrose police on Wednesday on a charge of malicious damage to property. The complainant alleged that she had parked her motor vehicle inside a garage on Senator Road in Malvern East. She then used her husband’s car to go to work. “Reportedly, when her husband used the vehicle to visit his brother, he noticed a severe scratch on the front of the vehicle,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officers for the Primrose police. “He phoned his wife to ask if she knew about the scratch and she did not.” The complainant later asked her son if he knew anything about the damage to the vehicle. “He initially denied knowing about the damage but later allegedly admitted that he had damaged the vehicle,” said Maome. A case was opened against the accused and he was arrested.

Habana embracing life after rugby The moment Springbok legend Bryan Habana walked into a recent function at the British Embassy, his erstwhile teammate Jean de Villiers recognised immediately the one element of life after professional rugby that all players need to come to terms with. Clothing. “The only thing I could fit into was my old number two Springbok suit. As I got to the function Jean saw the suit and said, ‘Whoa’. He opened my suit jacket and said, ‘This is one of your number twos isn’t it?’ He caught me out properly,” says Habana as he reflects on the transition he has made from a career as one of the most decorated rugby players in history to what he terms as “life outside that bubble”.It’s a transition that hit home again as he this week packed a suitcase for the upcoming Vodacom Super Rugby final, where Habana will join a select group of Vodacom Red clients who have qualified for an exclusive trip with him and Jonathan from Radio Raps fame as they first travel to Dubai and then onwards to wherever the final will be played. And packing a suitcase means, of course, you need clothes. “You know, when you stop playing, you almost have to buy a new wardrobe because the sponsors have moved on to the next best players. But also, you can’t walk into a business meeting in a tracksuit and slops anymore,” says Habana. “They say you need to prepare for life

after rugby, but when you’re in that bubble it’s very difficult to know what’s outside of it and when that move is going to happen. But you certainly become aware of the life professional sport has given you. It’s a very unrealistic one in terms of how the real world works. All of a sudden you go from a life of receiving a very detailed daily programme which tells you what to wear every day and where to go, to having to do all of those things yourself.” For Habana, this #RedFinalTour and the concept of an unknown destination resembles his own journey at present. “The transition period for any professional athlete is never the easiest. It’s not always that easy to prepare for something that’s really unknown. Only once you step into it and you start finding out where you fit into the real world, you start finding your feet a bit more. “I’m fortunate in that I studied while I was at Toulon and managed to get some form of business acumen behind me. I’ve always been interested in the digital space and am working in that area now. I’ve also worked with some big brands throughout my career, and was conscious of creating my own brand that corporates would want to continue working with after my rugby career was finished. “So in this 18-month period that I’ve given myself to discover life after
rugby, I’ve been fortunate to not have been too stressed about what’s next for me. I still don’t know what I’m going to be doing fulltime, but at the present time I’m really enjoying the opportunities, like
