22 January 2019 donderslag. Ek skrik so dat ek Gysie

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR I felt so encouraged by reading a quote attributed to Anne Frank recently. She said, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” In research I learned that when you serve, you discover that often the most important things you have to offer are not things at all. You start to uncover the full range of resources at your disposal – your time, presence,

vasgryp en die eiertjie stukkend druk

attention – and recognize that the ability to give stems from a state of mind and heart, a place much deeper than mere material possessions. Inspired by the possibilities this opens up in every moment, you begin to discover humble opportunities to serve everywhere. I personally believe that we are in a community to serve and that the opportunity to help others will open up more doors for us. We all want opportunities in life but the true lesson is to be an opportunity for someone and keep others first.

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT WE ARE IN A COMMUNITY TO SERVE AND THAT THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP OTHERS WILL OPEN UP MORE DOORS FOR US.

The South’s Celebrity Dog Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we pass on the news of the passing of Oscar, the Dulux dog. He was 9 and a half years old and had been ailing for the past year. He was imported by Sue Green from Belgium in 2009 and started work immediately for Dulux where he was well known for his role as the ambassador for the paint brand. He starred in many TV adverts and appeared at countless store promotions throughout Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KZN. He was instrumental in the creation of JOY Dogs and along with Jazmine and Yogi started the tradition of making people happy by visiting schools and

old age homes, many in the south of Johannesburg. Yogi passed away in 2016 and Yola (from Hungary) took over her role. Due to Oscar’s failing health a new dog from Russia was imported in 2018 – this is Orion and he is more than ready to take over Oscar’s role so that JOY Dogs can continue. Oscar taught Orion everything he needs to know. JOY Dogs will miss Oscar and are proud of the many lives that he touched and the people he made happy. “We wish to thank Dr Dave Erasmus from Kibler Park Vet who looked after him and helped make his last few months comfortable,” said a spokesperson for JOY Dogs.

tame TIMES CARES:

Back to school safety

Schools around the country reopened just a few days ago. For kids it can be a very exciting time – making new friends and learning new things. For parents however, it can be the cause of some anxiety, especially for those whose children travel to and from school by themselves. Charnel Hattingh, Fidelity ADT’s National Marketing and Communications Manager, has advice that can help increase peace of mind. She suggests the following tips are shared with the kids, and that they are encouraged to practise them every day: Children must always walk to or from school with a friend or friends. If your child walks alone, it’s a good idea to ask a teacher or other parents if they know of other kids from the area who do the same. Some towns have started “walking buses”, where local parents volunteer to walk to and from school with a group of school children, to assure their safety. Stick to streets you know and never take short cuts through unfamiliar or quiet areas. If you get picked up at school, always wait inside the grounds for your lift to arrive; do not leave the premises to go and look for them in the street. Remember, your parents would never send someone you don’t know to fetch you. Never get into a stranger’s car even if they claim that someone you love is hurt and that they are supposed to pick you up. It is a good idea to consider using a password system, to ensure that the person collecting you is in fact a friend of

your parents or someone you can trust. If a stranger approaches you, do not talk to them no matter how friendly they may seem. If someone tries to grab you, fight, kick and scream that they are not your mom or dad. In some cases children have to see themselves to and from school and keep occupied until mom and dad return home in the evening. “It is extremely important that the kids know not to let anyone into the house without your permission. If you are going to be late, let your children know as soon as possible and give them an idea of when they can expect you to be home,” says Hattingh. She suggests drawing up a list of important telephone numbers. “This list must include emergency services and mom and dad’s work and cell phone numbers. Save it on your child’s cell phone, and stick it on or near the landline. It’s also important to explain to them when these should be used.” Hattingh adds that everyone in the household should also know how to use your home security system – children included – and when and how to use the panic buttons.

Mother and daughter arrested on Swartkoppies Road

Officers K. Ubisi and R. Mulaudzi with the confiscated BMW. On Monday, 14 January, EMPD officers apprehended a mother and daughter for reckless and negligent driving and interfering with officers while on duty. While EMPD Officers were enforcing speed limits on Swartkoppies Road, in the vicinity of Hennie Alberts Street the members stopped a white BMW 1 series for clocking 107 km in a 70 km/h zone, driven by a 28-year old female. According to Kobeli Mokheseng, acting spokesperson for EMPD, the driver alighted her motor vehicle and demanded to see her readings on the speed camera, before she went back in the BMW and locked herself in until her mother came

to the scene. Mokheseng explained when the mother arrived she started calling the officers names. Back up was called and Brackendowns SAPS members responded. The driver was requested to step out of the vehicle before she was arrested along with her mother. The 49-year-old women and her daughter were detained at Brackendowns Police Station, charged with reckless and negligent driving, resisting arrest, and failing to furnish information and interfering with officers while on duty. They are expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

A suspected drug dealer arrested in Eden Park EMPD Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred M. Kgasago reported that a tip-off from members of the community resulted in an Eden Park resident being arrested by the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit for possession of 112 ziplock bags of dagga. The arrest and seizure of the dagga happened on Thursday, 10 January around 3:30pm. The Drug Enforcement Unit members responded swiftly to the tip-off. Upon raiding the house on Gibson Kente Street they uncovered 72 large ziplock bags and 40 smaller ziplock bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R3 000. A male suspect at the house was arrested and cash amounting to R4 230, suspected to be proceeds of drug dealing, was confiscated. The 42-year-old suspect was detained at

Eden Park Police Station and charged with possession and dealing in dagga. The suspect is expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

Alberton SAPS confiscate illegal cigarettes On Wednesday, 9 January, Alberton SAPS in conjunction with the Tobacco Industry of South Africa, confiscated illegal cigarettes from three suspects. The suspects, who are all foreign nationals, were each given a fine of R3000. The fines were paid by the suspects

and the cigarettes were confiscated.

Supra Exciting Times BY: SHAWN BRETT

A legend returns and globally all petrol heads are buzzing with excitement - the Toyota Supra is back! With Toyota giving us their 5th generation offering, it will be a name on everyone’s lips for some time to come. Beneath the bonnet there is a straight six, 3.0 litre turbo charged powertrain producing 250kws and 500Nm of torque. Although a lot smaller than the 4th generation Supra, this pocket rocket sports car will propel you from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. Set about to challenge the very popular BMW M2 and Porsche Cayman GT4, I think this will be fair competition with prices

estimated to be less than R1mil. With handling said to be agile and rewarding, you will experience a cheek numbing grin when you thrash it about through tight bends and sweeping corners (this will come in handy when dodging South African Pot holes and uncoordinated taxi drivers). Toyota displays the classic set up of a front mounted engine and rear wheel drive, so you can still try live out your fast & the furious boy hood dream with the Supra name badge behind your buck. From a performance perspective, Toyota has achieved their goal of bringing the

Supra back beautifully as it competes with the best in the business. But from a petrol head purist’s perspective, is it what we expected when comparing it to the reputation and status of the previous generation? Or were we hoping for more of a Nissan GTR eater rather than a pretty racer boy Lexus. Visually it should have been bigger, scarier and more masculine to win me over. However, this vehicle definitely has a solid place in the market and it is going to be a great conversation starter around your family braai, with your work colleagues… or even at your hair dresser in Sandton City, doll.
