Alberton legend finds INSIDE love again after tragedy

Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston learners show their love
After experiencing the highs of professional success and the lows of personal tragedy, Alberton resident and boxing star Martin Dewee has found love again with the beautiful Janine Arends. DeWee (53) from Brackenhurst also launched his second book called Body Mechanic recently to help motivate and encourage families to follow his example by exercising daily and eating healthier to get the healthy body and lifestyle that we all want in 2019. Born in Pietermaritzburg, Martin attended Raisethorpe Primary and Haythorne High School. He worked as a carpenter after finishing school but pursued a career in boxing. The talented youngster Martin had been going only lost three through a challenging fights out of time after Gloria’s death 105 amateur but he and his three sons fights and then dealt with the painful understanding decided to go the experience as a family and and togetherness. professional route were there for each other tame TIMES had the in Johannesburg. with comfort. opportunity to catch He married Gloria up with Martin again Dewee in 1990 and and heard the good news had three sons; Fabian, that he has fallen in love and Nic and Keagan. in love. After several dates and romantic evenings they knew they were meant for each other and in October 2018 Martin asked Janine’s hand in marriage. The two are planning to get married on 27 April 2019. Both Martin and Janine are passionately in love and speak with enthusiasm about their future plans for themselves and their children. This is a lovely story which we will elaborate on in the next edition of tame Times.

EDITOR Walk on the Wild Side A note from the
Crime can have a very dramatic impact on a community and can spiral out of control surprisingly quickly. Communities across South Africa have seen the real difference it makes when people work together to keep their suburbs safe. Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT sent out a statement saying that ADT wants to work with neighbourhood watches and other community organizations across the country, and have seen first-hand how these communities have generally become safer. Chanel explained that there are two basic types of community safety efforts with varying levels of formality and organizational elements. They have one thing in common; they depend on our support and active participation. The safety tips I personally learned that we should apply is the basic form when neighbours in a street or on a street block share contact details with each other and set up a local WhatsApp group. By getting to know your neighbours, you will easily be able to spot anything that is out of place. Your neighbours are often the first people to see if something is wrong at your home. tame TIMES encourages the community to work together because crime has fluctuated and the only way we can keep it safe is by active participation with our local SAPS and neighbourhood watches.
at Rietvlei Zoo Farm
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Johannesburg hosted a 5 km fundraising walk at Rietvlei Zoo Farm on Sunday, 10 February. AACL has been protecting and caring for animals since 1956, as an independent Animal Welfare Organization, it relies entirely on the generosity and goodwill of the animal-loving public for financial support. AACL is an organisation that is involved with all aspects of animal welfare. They provide shelter for abandoned animals, promote an efficient adoption program, prosecute animal cruelty cases, run welfare hospitals for lower income
groups, visit underprivileged areas with fully equipped mobile clinics and regularly address schools and clubs on the challenges of animal welfare. The walk had a fantastic turnout and funds were raised for this very worthy cause. For more information, to volunteer or make a donation, visit www.aacl.co.za
Ai, my arme man! Weet nie wat op hom wag nie!
Donating to Alberton SPCA
tame TIMES donated dog and cat food to the Alberton SPCA. They are open to receive donations of any kind but the SPCA manager told us that they are in need of more food for the dogs and cats. We appreciate all the good work the Alberton SPCA does in our community. Jong, toe lag hy hom amper ‘n papie!

TUTELA - A BEACON OF
HOPE FOR THE COMMUNITY
Tutela Gesinsorg/Family Care Alberton is celebrating 35 years of service this 2019. tame TIMES had the opportunity to interview Karen van Heerden the Office Administrator who was excited to share the heart and life of Tutela. On 2 April 1984 the Christian Social Council (Christelike Maatskaplike Raad) seceded from CSC Germiston due to a growing need in the Alberton area. “The need for services in the greater Alberton area became apparent, and our area of service soon expanded to Thokoza,Phola Park and Eden Park. In 2016 we changed our name to Tutela Gesinsorg/Family Care Alberton,” said Karen. Contrary to popular belief, the word Tutela is a Latin term for many things including ‘care’, ‘protection’, ‘support’, ‘shelter’, ‘refuge’, etc. All of this and more is incorporated in their slogan Caring Brings Hope. With services ranging from social services, family care, early childhood development and elderly care, to working alongside the Christian “Independency Services, helping the street community, and with the assistance of the Dutch Reformed churches, DSD, KFC Add Hope and LOTTO, we strive to continuously make a difference in people’s lives every day. Over the years our office has seen many changes. We’ve had new people joining our ranks, we’ve said goodbye to some of them. We’ve endured losses, celebrated many life events and weathered many storms. We also moved our office (more than once), changed our name from CMR to

Tutela – all for the sake of continuously growing as an organisation,” said Karen. She further stated that the need doesn’t ever end despite the success of their feeding scheme. Once a week vegetables and fruit are bought and taken to schools where it is prepared and transformed into nutritious meals for needy children. Tutela’s reach has grown, which means more vegetables and fruit is bought, which takes up more space. “We therefore want to make an appeal to the community of greater Alberton. We need a new, bigger bakkie. Our current bakkie has given us many, many years of loyal service, but it is now old and becoming too small for our needs. We are looking for someone to sponsor us with a new, bigger bakkie. You may brand it from top to bottom! We’ll
be a proud mobile advertisement for your company.” Also keep an eye out for their collection tins, as part of the #openhand_openheart (#oophand_oophart) project. These funds will be used in support of several ongoing community projects at our office. “We would also like to take a moment to thank each and every single person who has been part of our journey. Thank you! We depend greatly on your continued support, and we couldn’t do this without you. “We invite everyone to come and visit us at our office. Come and see what we do here, find out how you can help, come and see how you are already helping, join us at our jumble sale on Fridays, or come and browse through our little bookshop,” concluded Karen.

at Gold Reef City’s love lock wall Lock Wall, perfectly timed to coincide with the month of love. Now starryeyed couples can symbolically show their commitment to each other by attaching a padlock to the wall and throwing away the key. The Love Lock Wall is reminiscent of various love lock locations in Paris, the undisputed city of love, where padlocks famously adorn the Pont des Artes and Pont de l’Archevêchés, amongst others. Marketing Manager of Gold Reef City, Feron Somiah, says Gold Reef City offers couples a host of ways to celebrate their love this February. Loving couples can also get married or renew their vows at the Gold Reef City Chapel, a gorgeous Victorian-style sanctuary dating back to 1879. It was originally built on the Langlaagte farm to serve the miners during the gold rush, but was dismantled and reassembled

Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston Harvest elects prefects for 2019 learners show their love Harvest Christian School would like to congratulate the learners who were chosen to be prefects for 2019. May the Lord Jesus lead and guide you and prepare you into what He wants you to be. In Mark 9:35 it says “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Take up your cross every day, deny yourself and follow Jesus in everything you do.
The country was left reeling after a walkway recently collapsed at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark. The collapse led to the tragic death of several learners and the injury of others.
Some of the learners were taken to Netcare Union Hospital for treatment and the head learners from Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston decided to visit them in the month of February, to show their love and support.

Six years since the death of Reeva Steenkamp
It has been six years since Reeva RebeccaSteenkamp was fatally shot by her world-famous boyfriend, Paralympian Oscar Pistorius on Valentine’s Day. We look back at the life and career of a talented young woman who was lost to the world much too soon. Reeva was born in Cape Town on 19 August 1983. As a child, her family relocated to Port Elizabeth. She attained a law degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth in 2005. Reeva’s star started to shine when she started modelling at the age of 14. She was a finalist in the Weekend Post Faces of the Future competition in 2004 and competed in The Herald Miss Port Elizabeth contest in 2005. After university Steenkamp worked as a paralegal and model. She applied to the bar in late 2011 and hoped to be a qualified advocate by the age of 30. Reeva also worked as a roaming presenter for Fashion TV in South Africa, and had featured in several television advertisements. She made her reality television show debut in the “Tropika Island of Treasure,” set in Jamaica in 2013. It was aired a few days after her death. She also ranked #40 in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll of
South African FHM readers in 2011 and #45 in 2012. Steenkamp’s story is unfortunately the daily reality of so many South African women. Research shows that every four hours a woman is murdered in South Africa and half of these murders are at the hands of the women’s partners.

Captain Ramotshela visits KASIE FM Alberton SAPS spokesperson Capt Manare Ramotshela visited the KASIE FM Station to speak about crime and drug related issues in Aalberton and surrounding areas. The show was hosted by Ntate Mokwena. “I had two phone calls of which one of the callers managed to make an appointment for further assistance in connection with the people that sell drugs in their neighbourhood,” said Ramotshela. He said that he informed that caller about a similar incident, where the community of Leondale spoke to the cluster commander at the meeting and soon after drugs were recovered in the Katlehong area. During the show, he also gave out his service contact numbers to the community for those who wanted to report any criminal activities.

B r a c k e n d o w n s spokesperson Captain Lindi Moloi said to tame TIMES that according to the complainant he went to FNB branch and as soon as he left the branch he saw a Black Audi A4 reg: VPB123GP that stopped in front of him with 2 suspects armed with pistols. The pensioner ran towards the bank and the intention was to throw the money inside the bank but instead the suspects managed to grab the money and shoot him through his left leg. He was taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention. Brackendowns detectives is investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder and are appealing to anyone that might have witnessed the incident to contact Captain Henry Meyer on 011 617 5612.
Dowerglen High School learner shot An 18-year-old pupil at Dowerglen High School in Edenvale was rushed to hospital by paramedics after being wounded in the chest by stray bullets as cable thieves ran through the school trying to evade security guards on Wednesday, 13 February. “It is understood that he was sitting in the classroom when they heard the gunshots. The boy was hit in the chest and immediately rushed to the clinic,” ER24 confirmed in a statement. One of the wounds was an entrance and exit and the other bullet wound was stuck in his upper arm. The boy has since been transported to Edenvale Medical Hospital for further care. Two more pupils were given medical treatment on site. The suspects were stopped in nearby Dunvegan on suspicion of being cable thieves and allegedly shot the pupil while trying to flee the scene, according to the Bedfordview community policing forum The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that three suspects were arrested and a search for a possible fourth suspect was underway. “The department sincerely thanks members of the community for assisting the school and will continue to monitor the situation,” spokesperson Steve Mabona said in a statement.
SONA 2019: KEY POINTS FROM CYRIL RAMAPHOSA’S SPEECH
President Cyril Ramaphosa made a host of new pledges during his lengthy State of the Nation Address (SONA). He promised urgent intervention in infrastructure and public health, as well as giving all pupils in state schools access to tablets by 2025. Here are some of the biggest announcements: CORRUPTION This is the part everyone was waiting for and Ramaphosa did not shy away from speaking on the issue of corruption. Let us not forget that five foreign ambassadors pleaded guilty to contravening their diplomatic code of conduct when they directly contacted Ramaphosa, warning him of what was a stake if he did not confront corruption. Ramaphosa, in his speech, congratulated all the commissions of inquiry in process for their work in rooting out and exposing the corrupt rot that stubbornly rests within the crevices of government. “The Directorate will bring together a range of investigatory and prosecutorial capacity from within government and in the private sector under an investigation director reporting to the NDPP (Shamila Batohi),” he revealed. A REQUIREMENT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE WILL BE DROPPED IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR “It is important that more youth be absorbed into South Africa’s labour market,” Ramaphosa said. The government would, therefore, do away with entry-level work experience requirement in the public sector. “Our young people need to be given a real head start in the world of work,” he said. NO TAVERNS, SHEBEENS AND LIQUOR OUTLETS NEAR SCHOOLS Ramaphosa promised the complete shutdown of all taverns, shebeens and liquor outlets near schools as the country deals with extremely high levels of substance abuse. COMPULSORY EARLY DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL CHILDREN The responsibility of early childhood development centres are being migrated from the social development department to basic education, Ramaphosa said. He said during the migration the government will proceed with the process towards two years of compulsory early childhood development for all children before they enter grade 1.
“This is essential in equipping children to succeed in education, in work and in life – and it is possibly the single most important factor in overcoming poverty, unemployment and inequality,” Ramaphosa said. ESKOM WILL BE SPLIT IN THREE Government plans to “immediately embark” on a process of establishing three separate entities – Generation, Transmission and Distribution – under Eskom Holdings. “The consequences may be painful, but they will be even more devastating if we delay,” Ramaphosa said. PricewaterhouseCoopers economist Christie Viljoen says the announcement was expected. But while some commentators expect that one or more of the entities may eventually be partprivatised, Viljoen believes this may not happen. He thinks that breaking up Eskom into three entities will save costs and help to better identify and isolate problems, making them easier to address. In this way, one big unwieldy organisation will become three leaner and meaner entities, each with a specialised focus, says Viljoen. “While this will certainly not solve all of the utility’s problems, it will be enough for the government to avoid for at least some time the need for more private involvement in the energy sector.” Ramaphosa said further details of Government’s support for Eskom’s balance sheet will be provided by the finance minister in his budget speech. YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT Unemployment is one of the key focuses for government, said Ramaphosa. He drew results from last year’s inaugural Presidential Jobs Summit, where the business leaders, civil organisations and the private sector, pledged to equally contributing to creating job opportunities for South Africans. South Africa currently ranks high when it comes to youth unemployment. Ramaphosa proudly revealed that things are currently moving swiftly in launching the initiative which aims to create 250 000 jobs a year. “We have come up with great plans, platforms and initiatives through which we continue to draw young people in far greater numbers into productive economic activity through initiatives like the Employment Tax incentive. This incentive will be extended for another ten years,” Ramaphosa added. ELECTION DAY DATE National elections will be held on May 8.
Primrose SAPS combats crime The Primrose police arrested 21 suspects between February 6 and 12. This is according to the latest arrest statistics released by the station. The accused were charged with a number of different offences.
Charges include: possession of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, theft and shoplifting. The Primrose SAPS station commander, Col Albertina Vesi, thanked everyone who contributed to the successful arrests.

Changes to Nedbank Golf Challenge in European Tour finale
The Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player announced a number of changes for 2019, including a first prize of US$2.5 million, as part of a series of exciting changes to the final three Rolex Series events of the European Tour season. The tournament, which takes place at Sun City from November 14-17, will once again be the penultimate event on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, joining the Turkish Airlines Open
(November 7-10) and the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai (November 14-17) at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Significant changes to all three Rolex Series events were announced to increase the excitement around this season finale, with the winner of the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge now set to receive a winner’s cheque for US$2.5 million – double the US$1.25 million banked by England’s Lee Westwood in 2018. The tournament’s overall prize fund
will remain at US$7.5 million, with the remainder of the field playing for the remaining US$5million. The Race to Dubai points on offer have increased to 10,000, up from 7,500 in 2018. The field in this year’s tournament will comprise the leading 60 players available from the Race to Dubai, all of whom will be aiming to seal a place in the top 50 on the Race to Dubai which ensures qualification for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai the following week. A further four places will be then be added to the final Nedbank field, made up of three invitations and the winner of the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit. First played in 1981, the Nedbank Golf Challenge became part of the European Tour International Schedule at the beginning of the 2014 season and joined the prestigious Rolex Series, the eight premium tournaments on the Race to Dubai, in 2017. The changes announced, combined with Nedbank’s recent threeyear extension as title sponsor, mark another new chapter for the tournament
further enhance its reputation as one of Africa’s leading sporting events Last year, more than 72 000 fans watched Westwood seal his 24th European Tour win and first Rolex Series title, as he joined Thomas Bjørn (2014), Danny Willett (2015), Alex Noren (2016) and Branden Grace (2017) in an impressive list of recent champions, and the changes are aimed at attracting another world class field in November. Mike Brown, Chief Executive, Nedbank Group, said: “We are thrilled to extend our partnership with the European Tour and Sun International for another three years until 2021. The Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player, ‘Africa’s Major’, is an iconic event and one of the best corporate hospitality and live experiences on the African continent. It is a great platform for South Africa to showcase our beautiful country to the rest of the world and for Nedbank to demonstrate our brand essence of using our financial expertise to do good for individuals, families, businesses and society.”
