MONDEOR HIGH SCHOOL PUPIL STABBED TO DEATH ON HIS WAY TO SCHOOL

“ I am tired of submitting death certificated instead of graduations...” ~ Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi Kulani Mathebula a 19-year-old Mondeor High School pupil was on his way to school at around 7am on Wednesday, 13 March when he was assaulted by three pupils, believed to be from a nearby school. “He was attacked and stabbed by three other school boys from a nearby school in the area,” confirmed Captain Kay Makhubele. Sadly, Kulani died on the scene. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics found the boy with a stab wound to the chest and no signs of life. He said CPR was immediately initiated to try and revive the patient “Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned, and he was declared dead by another service,” Meiring said. Later that Wednesday afternoon, pathology services removed Mathebula’s body from a patch of grass, just 10 minutes away from his school. His school bag, blazer and shoes were next to his body. After the incident, police reportedly formed a team of detectives who followed up on information obtained at the scene. CCTV footage taken from various cameras in the vicinity helped identify potential suspects at the scene of the crime. It led them to arresting the 13-year-old on Wednesday evening and two 15-year-old suspects were also arrested in Soweto and Naturena in the early hours of Thursday, 14 March. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said his department would support the

He said there had been many deaths at Gauteng schools in the first term. “I am tired of submitting death certificated instead of graduations,” said Lesufi. Preliminary investigations have revealed that his cellphone may have been taken during the attack.

Picture:Via Twitter Before Kulani’s body was removed from the scene, forensic officials emptied out Kulani’s bag but his phone was not in his possession. A memorial service was held for Kulani Mathebula at the Mondeor High School on Friday morning, 15 March. The school together with family and friends shared a lot of memories during the morning

and said that they will always remember Kulani and that he will be missed. The three teenage suspects implicated in the death of Kulani appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court behind closed doors to face a charge of murder on Friday, 15 March. More information to follow on the case as it occurs.

A note from the

EDITOR “As a nation and community we must be aware that timing of the current power cut may lead to wastage...” The nationwide loadshedding can be a costly inconvenience for South African households that plan their monthly budgets well in advance. As a nation and community we must be aware that timing of the current power cut may lead to wastage as most families would have stocked-up supplies for the duration of the month. More importantly, it may put a strain on households that have tight budgets with little to no room for unexpected expenses which often creep up during long periods without electricity. In my view households are already under pressure due to recent increases in fuel prices and other costs of living. Loadshedding adds to the financial burden that we must face on a day to day basis. tame TIMES wants to hear from you regarding how loadshedding impacts your life on a daily basis. Welcome to Wonderland!

Get ready for your imagination to run wild! By: Kay Evans Wonder Park is a newly released animated adventure film produced by Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies. The film stars the voice talents of newcomer Brianna Denski, Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner, Ken Hudson Campbell, Kenan Thompson, Ken Jeong, Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Kath Soucie, David Cross, Norbert Leo Butz, and Kevin Chamberlin. A young, sweet 10-year-old girl, Cameron “June” Bailey (voiced by Brianna Denski) spends her childhood days constructing an adventurous amusement park, called Wonderland, in her bedroom and throughout their family home with her mom (voiced by Jennifer Garner). The amusement park is filled with fantastical rides that are inhabited by talking animals that also run the theme park and interact with all the visitors every day. June and her friends get creative and let their imaginations run wild and build rides in the garden and street for everyone to enjoy, but June loses her sense of imagination and her spark after her mom gets ill and has to go away for a while. On her way to Math Camp, June tries to find a way back home to be with her dad and discovers the real Wonderland in a magical forest

– the same one she created with her mom! Her adventure sees her helping her Wonderland animal friends to try and bring the ‘wonder’ back to the park, fighting off the cuddly, yet naughty, Chimpanzombies and ultimately finding herself again and the reason she fell in love with Wonderland. This is a magical and fun movie to

enjoy with the family and definitely a great way to spend the upcoming public holiday on 21 March! Lose yourself in the fantasy world of Wonder Park and take ride of a lifetime when you escape reality and head down to your local Ster-Kinekor Theatre to watch Wonder Park the best way possible, on the big screen of course!

Hygend Hert mense.

Reading should be fun! By: Kay Evans

Reading should be a part of every child and parent’s daily activities and can be something fun that parents can enjoy with their kids. To celebrate reading and improving self-discovery, reading should be encouraged on a regular basis.

Reading can sound like hard work and something you don’t want to be doing after a long day after work. Children might see it as a chore and something that may be boring, but here are some tips on how to make reading exciting!

Tips on how to making reading fun for your little one Create a special reading-spot for your reading time with your child – this will make the activity something fun and exciting to look forward to. Reading aloud is fun for children, especially when mom or dad use different voices for each character - it’s a way to build vocabulary, attention skills, and comprehension, as well as, perhaps most importantly, a love of reading Let your child help you choose the book you will be reading together – this will get them excited and keep them interested. Point out the pictures in the book as you read – this allows them to understand and connect to the story in a way that makes sense to them. Help your child realise that reading pertains to more than just books encourage them to get their hands on everything they can, including comics and cereal boxes. For birthdays and holidays, give your children books, just as you would a toy. A book is one of the best gifts you can ever give a child. Leave your kids’ books next to their beds. This will encourage them to read to themselves, even when they are still too

On Monday evening, 11 March the Alberton High Grade 11 public speakers debated their wellconstructed positions on various matters in the 2019 event hosted by the Speech and Drama College of South Africa. The teams, under the supervision of Ms. K. Reddy and Mr. M. Feiteira, spoke at Mondeor High and walked away with two excellent results that the teams were extremely proud of. The topic was to choose a meme to spur a topic and resulted in insightful speeches by the learners about Choices and Parent-Teen Relationships:

AfriForum’s East Rand neighbourhood watches hold mass patrol

A total of 5 388 km were covered by 174 vehicles in 716 man-hours AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in Alberton, Benoni, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park, Springs and Endicott on 8 March 2019 executed a mass patrol in their various areas in order to sharpen policing visibility in cooperation with the SAPS, the local CPF, community members, various security companies and safety institutions. This action commenced roundabout 16:00 and continued until 06:00 the following morning. 328 patrollers participated in the patrol. A total of 5 388 km were covered by 174 vehicles in 716 man-hours. Assistance was offered during an incident involving domestic violence, three arrests, an armed robbery, two shooting incidents, a housebreaking, the removal of trees from main roads and various car accidents.

“The East Rand neighbourhood watches will continuously tackle projects and regularly hold patrols to combat crime and promote safety in cooperation with the SAPS and other safety institutions,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety for the Northern Region.

Innovating in tough economy delivers results for award winners Despite a challenging economic environment, certain brands continued to innovate in the local market over the past twelve months and were deservedly recognised for their dynamism at the prestigious annual Product of the Year awards ceremony. “It was a tough year for brands, particularly those in the retail sector,” affirms Preetesh Sewraj, CEO and Chief Innovation Analyst at Product of the Year South Africa. “The year started with a sense of optimism as South Africa enjoyed a large fuel cut and political confidence was on the rise. This confidence started to slowly be reflected in consumer spending patterns which excited the market.” Unfortunately, the reality of the country’s economic situation subsequently set in as the financial pressure on consumers mounted due to rising living costs and increased taxation. “As a result, consumer sentiment turned, which is a major driver of spending. In response, many brands chose to scale down their innovation pipelines to offset dwindling sales and rising input and production costs,” adds Sewraj. There were, however, several brands that used the opportunity to introduce new innovations in their quest to attract new business amid tougher market conditions. “Leading global information and measurement company, Nielsen once again conducted South Africa’s largest independent consumer-voted survey. After trying and testing a range of products, 4,000 consumer households were surveyed and it was clear from the results which brands chose to forge ahead with their innovation cycle,” continues Sewraj.

These brands were duly rewarded with recognition for their continued commitment to quality and innovation at the 11th annual Product of the Year awards gala event, held at Hyde Park on Thursday, 14 March 2019. “Based on the research Nielsen conducted in 2018 and early 2019, the local market benefited from product innovations across a number of categories, including food, DIY, healthcare and home cleaning,” says Sewraj. A new efficacy category was also introduced in 2018 to recognise brands that improve consumers’ home, surroundings or lifestyles. “We continue to broaden the scope of our third-party endorsement programme to celebrate and reward brand innovation and boost awareness. This platform, therefore, guides consumers, helping them to find the best new products and services that can positively impact on their lifestyles and their pockets by delivering greater value for money,” concludes Sewraj.

Matteo gears up for Namibia Matteo Damilano, a Grade 11 student at Reddam House, Bedfordview took his passion for Mountain Biking and Crosscountry racing to new heights when he was selected by Cycling SA to represent South Africa at the upcoming African Continental MTB XCO Championships to be held in Windhoek, Namibia from 12 to 14 April. This newly capped Protea saw his path to greatness get its first boost in grade 8 when MTB was offered as an official school sport at Reddam House, Bedfordview and, in each subsequent year, his passion for the sport has continued to grow. In 2018 Matteo competed in the XCO (Cross Country Olympic) discipline at Provincial, National and school level. He raced in the Youth Men category which consists of riders 15 and 16 years of age. At Provincial level he finished the season in first place overall and was consequently awarded Gauteng Provincial colours (the awards ceremony was held on Saturday, 16 March). At National level Matteo finished third overall despite missing the last race of the

season due to an injury which prevented him from competing in the Spur MTB High School League races. In 2019 Matteo moved up to the Junior Men category (17 & 18 years of age). Being only 16 years old this made Matteo one of the younger riders in the age group and he had to compete against the more experienced and older 17- and 18-year olds. The first two national races for the year were held in Cape Town at Bloemendal Wine Estate. The first SA Cup race on Saturday, 2 March formed part of the UCI Junior World Series and attracted a record number of International riders. Over 50 International riders and 27 countries were represented at the event. The temperatures soared to almost 40 degrees on Day 1 and all riders suffered equally in the heat and dust. Matteo finished 8th on Day 1, with four International riders ahead of him, making him the 4th South African across the line. The second SA Cup race on Sunday, 3 March was marked by rain and mist with temperatures falling to the upper teens.

The start was plagued by a pile-up in which Matteo lost time and positions and fell towards the back of the bunch. Despite this disadvantage at the start, he gave it his all and managed to finish in 10th place. By the end of two intensive days of racing in Cape Town, combined with his achievements in 2018, Matteo had met the criteria to be selected by Cycling SA to represent South Africa at the upcoming African Continental MTB XCO Championships in Namibia. Matteo is very proud to have been awarded his Protea colours for cycling. It has been an incredible journey for him and he is thankful to all the people who contributed to his success. From the enthusiastic Mrs. Anthea Fanucchi who pushed his interest as his first school MTB teacher to his current coach, Mariske Strauss who is the Elite Women SA Champion. Not forgetting his sponsors Complete Cyclist who supported Matteo and all Reddam riders. We will be keeping a close eye on Matteo to spur him on and realise his immense potential in the sport.
