Department of Education involved to resolve dispute as 20 teachers continue to be absent. On Friday morning, 15 March, frustrated parents fetched their children from Glenview Primary and met with the School Governing Body to discuss the issue of absent teachers.
Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona the department, Booksaid: your“As advertising space we’re disappointed that we did not have a fruitful curriculum happening at the school.”today. Call 011 862 8500.
Parents raised their concerns regarding what is believed to be an unpleasant school environment. It is reported that teaching and learning have been disrupted as a result of the ongoing dispute between a head of department, the principal and two other officials. tame TIMES received calls from parents who were forced to fetch their children from the school earlier on this month after classes were disrupted. Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said: “As the department, we’re disappointed that we did not have a fruitful curriculum happening at the school.” According to Mabona, the 20 teachers at Glenview have been absent since 6 March. The 20 educators who include 13 department employees and seven employed by the school governing body (SGB), have reportedly not gone to work due to being ill. Educators have attributed their illness to stress and 10 of the employees have reportedly submitted medical certificates. MORE INFORMATION TO FOLLOW.

A note from the
EDITOR tame TIMES was informed last week that the City of Ekurhuleni has intensified its fight to stop theft of electricity and related criminality by conducting pre-dawn raids at areas where unaccounted electricity is detected. The illegal connections are the main cause of overloaded electricity supply grid which results in persistent power supply interruptions. Costly electrical infrastructure components such as transformers, switchgear and cables are also destroyed due to illegal connections. The City loses about R800 million per year due to illegal connections. The City’s MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy Cllr Tiisetso Nketle said that the operations to disconnect illegal connections will continue to be carried out sporadically across the City to break the back of electricity-theft syndicates. tame TIMES along with the City encourages you to report any illegal connection or suspicion of illegal connection activities through the municipal call centre on 086 054 3000.

Brutally honest… Even the strongest woman can be abused and manipulated over years. By: Kay Evans Melanie Janine Brown (born 29 May 1975), professionally known to the world as Mel B, is an English television personality, singer, actress and author. She rose to fame in the 1990s, as most people would know, as a member of the girl group Spice Girls, in which she was nicknamed Scary Spice. With over 85 million records sold worldwide, the group became the best-selling female group of all time. As one-fifth of the iconic Spice Girls, she has been an international star since her twenties. Brutally Honest is an unveiling of the struggles and extremely deep pain, that she has concealed so well, that lays behind the glamour and success she has reached. Over the years she has been a judge on The X-Factor UK and Australia as well as America’s Got Talent. She has acted in various films as well as lending her voice to animated projects, and also starred in her own reality show. Finally she has released her must-read, tell-all memoir, in which
you can expect only the truth from the loudest, proudest Spice Girl and the truth behind all the headlines in the news over the years. With deep personal insight, remarkable candor and trademark Yorkshire humour, the book removes the mask of fame and reveals the true story behind the Spice Girls, as well as the horror of her most recent marriage (and divorce) to Stephen Belafonte (film director and producer) from 2007 to 2017 and her 10-year struggle to be free. You don’t have to be a fan of the Spice Girls to enjoy this book, but rather a lover of biographies, as well as wanting to know more about the struggle that so many have to endure behind closed doors, while keeping a smile on their face for the world. Brutally Honest, published by Jonathan Ball Publishers, is now available at local bookstores. Get your copy now!
Ek is baie versigtig as dit by kos kom. Ek was in my lewe nog nooit so siek nie. Ek kon nie eers ‘n pilletjie of stropie inhou nie. Tip- Higiëne by die huis en by ‘n restaurant is noodsaaklik. As jy onseker is, bestel iets veiliger. En sit ‘n kussing in die badkamer ingeval.....

Let’s celebrate Earth Hour and conserve energy Swich your lighs off and do your part fo he planet By: Kay Evans
Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event, as many would know, is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour. Electronics and lights are all turned off from 20:30 to 21:30 pm on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

FIND US IN ALBERTON AND BOKSBURG
It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to involve more than 7 000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories to raise awareness for energy consumption and effects on the environment. South Africa is one of the countries that supports this initiative, which of course, won’t cost you a cent. This does come at a very ironic time
for all South Africans, being subjected and enduring hours without electricity every day as it is. However, try to do something good for the environment for future generations and join in this movement, as it has a greater purpose.
Why not use this hour to instill important knowledge about green behaviors in the next generation? Teach your children and family members about the environmental facts behind Earth Hour and why the world commits to doing this, every year. Take time to discuss the ways your family can make small changes which impact our environment. However, be safe during Earth Hour and when you light your candles, place them in glass jars, so they don’t cause a fire. By putting your lit candles in beautiful glass jars, your Earth Hour will be beautiful too! This doesn’t have to be a lonely hour in the dark! Rather spend some quality time with your loved ones during this hour and play some board games, or use this opportunity to have a romantic date night and have dinner by candlelight.

AfriForum publishes
results of landfill site audit The civil rights organisation AfriForum audited landfill sites on the East Rand in March 2019 as part of a national project to ascertain the quality of landfill sites in South Africa. The audit evaluates landfill sites in towns with established AfriForum branches according to 32 questions. A landfill site must obtain 80% to comply with the set standards, and most East Rand landfill sites passed the audit. According to applicable legislation and regulations – among these the National Environmental Management:
Waste Act, 2008 (Act 59 of 2008) – a landfill site should comply with specific requirements, which include access control, illegal dumping, fire regulations, fencing and rehabilitation. AfriForum audited about 130 landfill sites in 2018. The results will be included in a report to be sent to the Department of Environmental Affairs. “We are grateful for the department’s cooperation and that the provincial waste managers made their audits available to us,” says Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum’s spokesperson for the audit.

“The large landfill sites are managed well, and it is a pleasure to see that these are maintained at a high level. We will investigate the deterioration of the Simmer and Jack landfill site, especially since a new contractor was appointed there. After that, our focus will move to the management of smaller sites and transfer stations,” says Marie Naude, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
After the project, AfriForum will investigate an alternative plan for landfill sites in South Africa in cooperation with a waste-to-energy company. Similar projects are very successful in other countries. AfriForum will monitor the process continuously to ensure that landfill sites that are not up to standard are brought up to standard.

EKURHULENI CITY MANAGER CONDEMNS ATTACKS ON EMERGENCY SERVICE OFFICERS Ekurhuleni City Manager Dr. Imogen Mashazi condemned the barbaric attacks on emergency service officers while on duty. Dr. Mashazi said this while visiting an injured fire fighter Rovhiwa Mohlola (35) in hospital. Mohlola sustained gunshot wounds while attending to an injured patient over the weekend in Dukathole Informal Settlement in Germiston. “We urge the members of the public to protect the emergency services workers when they are out there to save lives. An attack on the officers defeats the purpose of saving lives, which is what they are here for,” lamented Dr Mashazi, wishing Mohlola a speedy recovery. The city manager further explained that such incidents were a common occurrence in the recent past,
Executive Mayor Masina to deliver the SOCA 2019
forcing the City to embark on a publicity campaign to expose the dangers faced by emergency services personnel when attending to life threatening emergencies and fires in the region. “These attacks are senseless and unwarranted because these employees are putting their lives on the line to save other fellow humans,” she continued. “As a city we shall forever be grateful to these men and women for the sacrifice and dedication to public service.” Furthermore, Dr Mashazi gave an undertaking that the injured Rovhiwa and the rest of the team that was on duty with her on the day of the incident would receive counseling and other related support towards their full rehabilitation from the city’s Social Development department.
He will also reflect on the strides the City has made in delivering quality services to its residents, a point already noted by the Gauteng Region Observatory (GCRO) Quality of Life Survey (QoL) 2017/2018 which rated the City as the “Best Performing Metro in Gauteng Province”. He will also reflect on how the City has continued to revitalise the local economy through good governance and socioeconomic transformation. Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina will deliver the State of the City Address (SOCA) on Wednesday, 27 March, at the Germiston Council Chambers, under the theme, “Building a local economy that grows in the hands of the people.”
The City of Ekurhuleni received an unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor General’s (AG) for 2017/2018 Financial Year. The city did not incur fruitless and wasteful, and unauthorised expenditure in the 2017-18 financial year among other achievements.
Mayor Masina will report on the profound milestones his administration has achieved this past financial year and layout the City’s priorities for the upcoming year.
The City has made provisions for public viewing in all communities and live-streaming on community radio stations and social media.

MAN BRUTALLY MURDERED IN ATTEMPTED GOLD HEIST Vehicle riddled with bullets in broad daylight on R21
TWO WOMEN KILLED
IN SOUTH HILLS
Francois Swart from Pretoria was declared brain dead at Life The Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni on Tuesday, hours after his vehicle was brutally targeted by 10 suspects in an attempted armed robbery. Dale Collins, a colleague of Francois was also wounded in the attempted heist. Dale underwent emergency surgery with more surgery that was scheduled for Friday. He is in a critical condition but stable. Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said the driver and passenger of the Toyota were injured after their car was riddled with bullets.
On Tuesday morning, 19 March ten robbers attempted to steal gold that was being transported in a Toyota Land Cruiser in Boksburg, confirmed the police. A 22-year-old security guard identified as Francois Swart was shot and severely wounded in the shoot-out and passed away in hospital on Wednesday morning, 20 March.
“They were transporting gold along the R21 in Jet Park in Boksburg when they were attacked by the group,” said Makhubele. Ekurhuleni police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, some of whom fled the scene in a VW Golf before police arrived. “The suspects fled in two sedans without being able to take anything,” Naidoo said. “We urge any member of the public who might have information which could lead to the arrests of these suspects to contact their nearest police station,” Makhubele added.
On Friday morning, two women were shot dead by an unknown gunman on a motorbike in South Hills. Police spokesperson Capt. Jeff Phora said the women were gunned down between 4am and 5am on the corner of Theunissen and Slabbert streets. They have since been identified on social media as Mary Abbott Coetzee and Chanty Duvies Barnard. Two people were also shot on the corner East and Augusta roads in Regents Park
about 3km, from South Hills where the police found cartridges and blood at the crime scene. “The scene started in Regents Park where the suspect also shot at two people, but at this stage we don’t know where these victims are.” He said the police were contacting local hospitals to find out if they had admitted any shooting victims. It is unclear if the two shootings are connected.
SERIAL ROBBER SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN PRISON The Brackendowns SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Lindi Moloi reported the conviction of Peter Bapala (32), who was found guilty of robbery in a property of Meyersdal on 8 May 2014. The convicted and two other suspects entered a property in Meyersdal where they found the female owner of the house, her two children and their domestic worker asleep upstairs. Moloi said that two of the suspects tied the domestic worker up with cable ties and locked the older child and his mom in the bathroom. The suspects proceeded to rob the property of electronics, jewellery and money. “Fingerprints were taken at the scene of the crime and the investigating officer, Det. Const Hlengani Mathebula connected the fingerprints to a suspect from Leeu-
kop Prison, who was already serving a seven-year sentence for another robbery,” said Moloi. He applied for a warrant of arrest for Peter Bapala. “The trial took two months before it was concluded,” said Moloi. “It was a very painful trial that brought back trauma for the victims.” On Tuesday, 12 March Peter Bapala was sentenced to 25 years in prison for this robbery. The station commander of Brackendowns SAPS, Col. Cornelius van Vuuren, praised Mathebula for his dedication towards reducing crime.
