Vullis kan nie gestort word nie. CITY COMPLETES MIGRATION TO BIGGER REFUSE COLLECTION BINS The City of Ekurhuleni has completed the migration from using small l waste bins to bigger 240l wheelie bins. The 240 wheelie bins have been distributed residents and remain available at all the City’s waste management depots for residents who have not collected theirs yet. Effective from 1 July 2019, no waste will be collected if it is not contained in a City-branded 240L wheelie bin. The City’s fleet of refuse trucks are fitted with an automated mechanism to pick up the bins and pour the refuse into the compactor. The City is therefore urging all residents who missed the mass roll out to collect their wheelie bins from the waste management depots closest to them between Monday and Friday from 8h00 to 15h30. Residents must ensure that they take a Copy of their ID and municipal account to the depot to collect the waste bin. The bin is issued for free, while the refuse collection is charged R162.24 per month for each bin.

Delivery on Tuesdays to households and businesses in Alberton, Germiston South, JHB South and Bedfordview. Published by Tame Communications. Corner Michelle Avenue and Sangiro Close, Randhart. PO Box 17699, Randhart,1457 Tel: 011 862 8500, Fax: 011 869 7335

Residents who are in need of more than one bin may apply for such a bin, at an additional charge. Residents who use the bins are urged to place them outside their homes at 7:00 on calendar days provided by the City. There are various advantages from using the 240L wheelie bins, which include the following: • Provides more storage capacity than the refuse bin used previously. • Have a longer lifespan than a bag (approximately 8 years). • Minimizes tearing of bags by rodents and stray dogs, and infestation of rodents • Durable to utilize and easy to clean. • Easy to handle with low risk of being exposed to sharp objects • Does not generate water vapour and is made of pest repellent material. • Avoid continuous acquisition of plastic bags thus saving air space. • Promotes uniform service standards and cleanliness of the city.

Alberton Street Store making a difference to those in need

The first Street Store in Alberton was a massive success as 1088 poor and homeless residents of Alberton experienced a tremendous shopping experience on Saturday, 18 May at the Alberton Dam. tame TIMES was part of the day and experienced this innovative concept. The Street Store is the world’s first rent-free, premises-free, pop-up charity store, where the poor and homeless residents of the community shop for free. Free shopping items such as shirts, pants, shoes, jerseys and other clothing was available and food was also served. Organizations around Alberton such as churches, schools and businesses stood together to support this venture. During the day more than a thousand homeless and poor came to choose clothing outfits and shoes that they desired.

tame TIMES spoke to a few of the shoppers who said that this is like a Christmas shopping experience, that they feel fortunate and look forward to the next Street Store. Geraldine Jacobs, Head of Charity and Welfare at Doxa Deo Church in Meyersdal, said that she has seen God move and thanks everyone for contributing and making this a successful Street Store. The Street Store objective is to uplift those in need in our community. As a marketplace to sell pre-loved clothing they also have access to many people also wanting to donate items and not just sell them. tame TIMES has seen smiles all day by shoppers and residents who were part of this wonderful initiative.

Fun walk for a cause Uniting Reformed Church based in Thokoza wish to extend their gratitude to the residents of Thokoza for coming in numbers, from youngsters to the elderly, on a sunny Saturday morning. The 3km and 5km fun walk started and ended at the church. Residents were cheering the participants along the route. A sense of togetherness and camaraderie filtered through the throngs, with some walking athletically and many others ambling along the route. The fun walk was a friendly race with participants taking part for their own enjoyment rather than

competition. After the fun walk there was a mobile clinic provided by the Ekurhuleni Metro where participants were afforded an opportunity to undergo free medical check-ups as for health screening so that after their exercise they would test sugar levels and high blood pressure part of the wellness programme and all took part in aerobics with Virgin Active’s guidance Members of the church extend their thanks and appreciation to everyone who contributed towards the success of the event.

Janien Korsten

Bracken High chess players conquering the competition

On Saturday, 11 May, Assumption Convent School in Germiston hosted a “Dads and Daughters Day”. The objective of the day was to enhance the relationship between each of the fathers and their daughters. It was great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The day began with fun and teambuilding. The dads and their girls were divided into teams and each Dad-Daughter pair had to select a game to participate in. The indoor games included a Father –Daughter Quiz, and the outdoor games ranged from hula-hoop competitions to water balloon throwing, to three-legged races. There was much laughter, excitement and plenty of inter-team banter! The dads and daughters were then split up and each given a talk. The fathers were address by Christo te Brake who

The daughters were given a talk by Stacey Hopebailie on respect and given some practical ideas of how to show love in everyday life. After the talks, the dads and daughter had private dialogues with each other and then were lead in a special prayer and were reminded about how important praying together is to improve their bonds. Report on RDP Housing Development in Mayberry Park Statement by: Cllr Marina van Wyk (Ward 94)

On 26 February 2019, I attended a meeting called by the City of Ekurhuleni Project Manager Sam Amoa, at the Thokoza CCC with regards to the proposed RDP Housing Development, earmarked for the portion of Palmietfontein between Vereeniging, Hennie Alberts, Delphinium and JG Strijdom Roads in Ward 94. After the meeting, I reported back to the community of Ward 94 to inform them of the proposed development. The residents of Mayberry Park were unaware of the proposed project and

demanded a public meeting for more information. This public meeting was held on 26 March 2019 at the Civic Centre. Shuma Africa, who is the appointed Consultant for the project addressed the residents. The residents were not satisfied with the answers and requested a follow-up Participation Meeting with the MMC. To date, almost 500 residents of Mayberry Park have objected to this development due to the lack of public participation. A petition is being circulated to voice the objections of the residents. It is the right of all residents to be informed of proposed developments in their wards. Public Participation is a process designed to include residents in the decision making and planning of the wards that they live in. Developments as large as this have a major impact on the area that it is intended for. It is therefore critical that all residents of the Ward be informed and satisfied of the positive effect that such a development may have on their immediate environment, as well as any possible negative effects this development may have. The residents of the Ward must be given a platform to voice their concerns, objections or satisfaction with such a project. The MMC has accepted the invitation to attend a Public Participation Meeting on Tuesday, 21 May at 18:30 at Bracken Park Community Hall, Hennie Alberts Street, Mayberry Park. All residents of Mayberry Park are invited to attend the meeting.

Stolen goods recovered by Alberton SAPS Alberton SAPS spokesperson Capt Manare Ramotshela reported to tame TIMES that the Alberton SAPS recovered goods that were stolen in a business burglary in Alrode last year. “On Thursday, 9 May at about 3pm, we investigated a complaint at a company in Roodekop whereby a suspected African male, employed at the company, was taken in for questioning and was later arrested for possession of stolen goods as reported in 2018,” said Ramotshela. Alberton SAPS made the breakthrough thanks to Sgt Choene Frans Ramotshela and his crew. The men and women in blue did thorough work and gathered as much information for prosecution presentation within the court of law.

Community tracks down stolen scooter On Thursday, 9 May AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch in Alberton, in collaboration with the Jeppe SAPS, F&D Tactical and Afrisist Tracking, recovered a stolen scooter. The neighbourhood watch received information that a green Honda 125cc scooter was stolen outside a business in Brackenhurst. Collected information pointed the involved parties to three Johannesburg areas for investigation. The scooter was located in one of these areas.

The suspect will soon be facing the charges for the alleged criminal activities.

A home invasion is a scary situation and one we all want to prevent. So, what’s the most effective way to not become a statistic? Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager Fidelity ADT, offers these top five tips: • Trim trees and shrubs so that they cannot be used as a hiding place and ensure that the yard, pathways and dark corners are well-lit. Check your burglar bars and security gates for rust or weak spots as these weak spots can be easily broken or forced open. • Be sure that the household - including domestic staff know when and how to use the alarm system and panic buttons if these are installed. They should also know who to call in an emergency - make a list of contact numbers and post them on or near a phone. If you have not been informed of the arrival of delivery people or service providers, do not open the door, even if they insist that they have an appointment.

Police have confirmed they are aware of the video showing armed men committing robbery in broad daylight on a busy highway in Johannesburg, but could not provide more details. The incident is believed to have taken place

tips to prevent a home invasion

“Unless you feel you are facing an imminent life-anddeath situation, don’t fight back. As hard as it may be, accept your situation and give your assailants time to take any material possessions they want. Speak only if spoken to and then try to keep your answers short and to the point. Be conscious not to stare at the assailants but try nevertheless to get a good look at them and memorise their physical details and clothing. Listen for any names or other details that might help identify them later,” she says.

• Check your security often. This includes testing your alarm and panic buttons at least once a month. It also includes walls, gates, and any entry points on your property and house.

Generally speaking, she says the first few minutes of a home invasion are the most dangerous. “Try to remain calm and quiet. If you are not threatening, the assailants can concentrate on their goals and leave.”

• Get to know you neighbours. Neighbours are often the ones to notice something amiss in your neighbourhood and on your property. Join your local Neighbourhood Watch. There is a significant reduction of incidents of break-ins and home invasions where community groups are active.

She strongly advises that residents speak to their families and staff about possible scenarios so they can be aware of what to do should they ever find themselves confronted with a home invasion.

In the unfortunate event that a criminal is able to force their way into your home, Hattingh’s advice is to stay as calm as possible and to try to evaluate the situation.

at the Xavier Road off-ramp from the N12. It was captured on video, which has gone viral on social media. According to social media users, the incident took place at around 2pm on Monday, although this could not be confirmed. In the video, two unidentified men are seen preying on what appears to be a white Toyota Fortuner. The men can be seen running off, carrying goods taken from the vehicle. The men are then seen running towards a silver vehicle, apparently a getaway car. SAPS spokesperson Capt Kay Makhubele told TimesLIVE: “We were alerted about the incident and rushed to the scene but did not find anything. There was no case opened.” Attempts to obtain a statement from the Johannesburg Metro Police were unsuccessful.

“Quick action by the SAPS and other parties involved, once again proved what communities who stand together can achieve,” said Louis van Aswegen, Chairperson for AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch in Alberton.

• Make sure the alarm system is armed overnight or when anyone is home alone. If possible, lock inter-leading doors to rooms that are not used overnight and keep a cell phone at the bedside in case of an emergency. Keep your panic button with you at all times.

Awesome Time Trail On Wednesday, 15th May was a awesome evening where the Sports4life Time Trial was blessed with amazing weather. Fewer participants arrived for the event, but a number could not attend. We had the pleasure of having first time participant as well, Garrith Joynt , who also won the Time Trial, even though he took a wrong turn during the event.

It has been great seeing parents bringing their children with them to enjoy the event together. News Café went out of their way on the evening to provide a special “ price reduced menu “ for Time Trial participants. Only a number of the runners stayed for supper due to the great value meals on offer, providing a great connection time as well for those who stayed for the meal.
