WMO World Championships in Blackpool dreams come true.” Speaking to Kanchu Alex Tebbutt, the Sensei and owner of Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy said that he believes has great fighting potential with a big heart and courageous spirit. “I have coached LK for 6 years now and at first he started off a lot softer but after building him up he is now one of my best fighters who I am extremely proud of. I also believe that he will perform outstandingly well in representing South Africa in the 2019 World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) World Championships
tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet the brave 10-year-old LK van Coller who is a kickboxer at Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy, in Lambton, preparing for the 2019 World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) World Championships in Blackpool, England, set to take place in November 2019. On Friday evening, 30 August, a fundraiser was held at Spur Copper Canyon in Lambton, who sponsored LK with 15 per cent of all proceeds generated on the evening. tame TIMES learned that van Coller was chosen based on his performances at the full contact martial arts (FCMA) tournament held in Kempton Park, earlier this year. LK is passionate about kickboxing and the love for the
sport started from a young age. “I loved kickboxing from a young age and my father always inspired me to follow my dream. I am excited to participate in the he 2019 World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) World Championships in Blackpool. Through hard training and practice I believe I am ready for the competition,” said LK. The parents of our young champ were glowing and said that they are very proud of their son. They are busy doing everything in their power to help their son to realise his potential. “We are very proud parents and we want the best for our child. We still cannot believe that our child achieved this level of talent at such an age of 10 years old. We will do anything possible to make his
in Blackpool in England,” said Tebbutt. Clayton Tregear, co-owner of Spur Copper Canyon is excited to help the little man and wants to help make van Coller’s dreams come true. “I believe by giving him this financial support he will go on to perform to the best of his ability,” added Tregear. tame TIMES wishes LK van Coller all the best as he jets off to England in November.

Reg bo my kop. Seker weggekruip in een van die struike. En dit is ‘n lelike slang. Ek word yskoud, my bene is lam, en ek gee so benoude gilletjie. “Nee, binne in, agter my kop”. Toe die klomp mense die slang sien spring almal agteruit behalwe die jongman. “Dis net ‘n huisslang tannie”, sê hy met ‘n glimlag. “Nie my huis nie boetie. Ek gee nie om of dit ‘n huis, woonstel of kantoorslang is nie. Help my net”.
A NOTE FROM THE
EDITOR I encourage matrics to work hard but for parents also to support them. Reading an article from the Education expert Dr Gillian Mooney who stresses that parents and guardians also have an important role in ensuring their children perform optimally in the finals. Matrics from the Class of 2019 hunker down in front of their books in preparation for their final school exams in a few weeks’ time, it is worth remembering that parents and guardians also have an important role to play in ensuring their children perform optimally when the time comes, an education expert says. “There is so much focus on the learners themselves, and how they can prepare mentally, emotionally and academically,
but as most of their parents can attest, this period is also a nail-biting one for them, to say the least,” says Dr Gillian Mooney, Dean: Academic Development and Support at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education institution. “Because while parents understand the importance of performing well and the consequences of not performing well or worse, failing, they can’t do much more than play a supporting role during this time,” she says. However, parents and guardians should not underestimate the value of this support and the size of the contribution they can in fact make, she adds.

Hospital marks 20 years of service to Nesisa Moyo participates in the greater East Rand community Mrs Universe Africa 2019
The corridors of Netcare N17 Hospital in Springs were abuzz with excitement recently as the hospital commemorated its 20th anniversary; with patients, doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals and administrative staff all joining in the celebrations. Commenting on the occasion, Jaco du Preez, general manager of Netcare N17 Hospital, said that the hospital has a proud record and has been a beacon of hope for the people of Springs and
further afield, who continue to rely on its specialised healthcare services. “The 20th anniversary is an important milestone not only for the hospital but also for the communities we serve.” “Our management team and staff members have embraced on-going improvement and our hospital has made a great contribution within the community over the years, with staff having cared for and touched the lives of many thousands of patients and their families,” he noted.

Help the City grow its future leaders – get them vaccinated Health practitioners have observed an alarming trend of parents missing their children’s immunisation appointments, while some lose the immunisation cards commonly known as the road to health cards. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), immunisation prevents deaths ranging from 2 million to 3 million each year. Thus, the City of Ekurhuleni reiterates that every day is an immunisation day, and every child must be vaccinated according to the immunisation schedule. “It is important to get your little ones protected from vaccine-preventable diseases, and the first step towards ensuring that, is through vaccination. It
doesn’t matter whether you lost the road to health card or missed the scheduled date, ultimately a child must be immunised,” said Sister Tembi Mahlangu, a Manager Nursing Services at Brackenhurst Clinic in Alberton. Sister Tembi further indicated that children need all the required vaccinations at the right time during their developmental stages. Skipping a stage poses a threat to a child’s development, making them prone to vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccines stimulate the body’s immune system, which helps to prevent and protect children from serious illnesses such as polio, hepatitis, measles, meningitis, diphtheria, pneumonias and other life-threatening illnesses that affect children as they grow.

Job Shadow Day at Gold Reef City was met with great enthusiasm by the 96 grade 11 learners from Johannesburg Secondary School on Thursday, 29 August. The youngsters were hosted at the property by 41 volunteer staff members from 16 different departments, each contributing towards the learners’ understanding of different job requirements. This is the second year that Gold Reef City has hosted the learners in an initiative that forms part of a broader Career Development programme sponsored by Gold Reef City. The programme provides hands-on career guidance and life skills for grades 9 to 12 learners and aims to ensure that their future choices are influenced by sound knowledge of opportunities suited to their personal interests and abilities. This Grade 11 group was introduced to the Career Development programme in Grade 9. These learners have been through the
various stages that included an online evaluation exercise and an individualistic portfolio that illustrates their individual interests, aptitudes and highlight suitable career opportunities that then guide subject choices. In Grade 10, learners attended workshops and Professionals Day with Gold Reef City staff volunteers. Grade 11 activities include the Job Shadow Day and workshops on life skills, tertiary education options, and job-readiness training, which will intensify in matric.

Crowd funding campaign started for family after husband’s abduction Laerskool Randhart se Super 12 Bybelvasvra
Christo Bothma (54), a plant maintenance Manager from Potchefstroom was kidnapped by a terrorist group in Djibo, Burkina Faso, on the 23rd of September last year, 17 days before he was expected to return home. To better provide for his wife of over 24 years, Amanda (50) and their 3 children, Christo started a job at Avocet Mine in Burkina Faso in 2014. After the mine closed due to a technical shut down, Christo and the rest of the expats returned home. Without his usual income, the family struggled financially. Christo eventually got his old job back, with a significant pay cut and longer rotation periods. After nearly 4 months away, Christo was due to return home, when Amanda received a life-changing and distressing phone call on the 24th of September 2018 from Steve Kruis from DIRCO. “I got a phone call that Chris, the owner’s son and the driver had been abducted by one of the Al Qaeda terrorist groups and their car was found 40km from the Mali border. We were traumatized by the news and were left with so many unanswered questions. All we wanted was for Christo to come home,” says Amanda Amanda’s fears were confirmed when the mine owner, Mr Patel called and offered to pay the ransom once the kidnappers made contact. On the 7th of November, after weeks of unanswered questions, Amanda received a call from the South African embassy in Burkina Faso that Christo had been released; to her disappointment, it turned out to be incorrect information and Christo’s whereabouts were still painfully uncertain. “When we heard that Christo had been released we were all ecstatic that it was over and that Chris was coming home. We were once again devastated to hear 3 days later that it was all ‘fake news’,“ says Amanda Distressed, Amanda reached out to Dr Sooliman from The Gift of the Givers, who has done everything in his power to get Christo and the other captives safely home. Just after a team was sent to look for Christo, the kidnappers made contact demanding a hefty sum of money. “On the 22nd of May, Dr Sooliman came to Potchefstroom to meet with me again, and to let me know that they had given the kidnappers a proposal of an X amount
of money for the 6 people than they have in Mali of which Christo is one. They rejected the proposal and came back with a $40 million proposal (approximately R100 million per person). We were devastated. Nobody has that kind of money,” says Amanda Unable to cover the ransom, the kidnappers made contact a second time, this time saying that Christo had died. To investigate the claim, Dr Sooliman sent his negotiator to Mali to determine what had happened to Christo. “On the 1st of July I received the news that Chris had passed away on the 19th of June but it wasn’t confirmed. Dr Sooliman later made contact with two of his intermediaries who confirmed that Christo had passed. Until I see my husband’s body, I won’t believe that he is gone. I believe in my heart that he is still alive. Now it’s a waiting game to see if Chris has really passed, and if so, we need to find where he was buried and to bring him home to rest,” says Amanda Crowdfunding on BackaBuddy To support the Bothma family through their ordeal and to make sure they are able to cover their household and living expenses during this difficult time, a family friend, Retha Kelly (45) has created a campaign on donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy. “Without Christo, the family is unable to cover the costs of the house bond, let alone food, electricity and other bare necessities. Which is why we started a campaign on Backabuddy for anyone wanting to lend their support,” says Retha, who met the family 12 years ago as fellow expats in a small village in Damang, Ghana West Africa. The BackaBuddy campaign has already raised R 20 766.71 towards the family’s living expenses with contributions from 10 donors. “The funds I’m trying to raise is to pay our house not to use for myself, so that the bank doesn’t take it back. If Chris is really gone I don’t want to lose the one thing that we have, the memories we have in this house. “ says Amanda Support this cause on BackaBuddy: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/christobothma

Two suspects arrested for possession of drugs Three arrested for possession of stolen property
The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit took two drug peddlers off Eden Park streets during August. While on patrol in the area around 9.45am, officers stopped a 47-year-old male on Achmat Dangor Street.
He was found in possession of three ziplock bags of Khat worth R900. Fifteen minutes later, on Leyland Street, a strangeacting female suspect was stopped and searched. Officers found a ziplock bag
of Khat worth R300 on the 46-year-old. Both suspects were arrested and taken to Eden Park Police Station, where they were charged with possession and dealing in narcotics.

Chiefs stars praise their own fathers at unique father and son event A select group of father and sons were given memories to last a lifetime when they joined a host of current and past Kaizer Chiefs legends at Naturena on Saturday for the inaugural Vodacom Red Father and Son Sleepout with Kaizer Chiefs. Stars such as Doctor Khumalo, Daniel Cardoso, Shaun Bartlett, Lee Baxter, Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande and Kaizer Motaung Junior joined with the fathers and their sons who, as Vodacom Red clients, won this exclusive experience of camping out in style on the field at Naturena, meeting their heroes and spending quality time with each other under the theme #BeAPresentDad. But as much as they are an inspiration to the fathers and sons who attended, on this occasion many of them spoke of how their own fathers were their greatest inspirations. “I’m really humbled to be part of something like this. Fathers need to play a role in ensuring their sons walk the right path,” said Khumalo. “We’re living in an abnormal society where kids are exposed to so much negativity. This kind of initiative helps to build that relationship between fathers and sons. My father was very disciplined. He never smoked or drank. I was taught I had to be home before sunset. I had to polish my school shoes and soccer boots. I had to fold my school clothes for the next day before I went to bed. I had to make my bed and put my pyjamas folded under the pillow. My father believed neatness and cleanliness was next to Godliness. I’ve done the same with my son.” Cardoso also spoke of the tremendous influence his father had on his life and career in football.

workout followed by an afternoon field session in Seki, in cloudy but hot and humid conditions (29˚C), following a few hours’ sleep after completing their 25-hour journey from South Africa. “It’s great to be here and the welcome has been great,” said Rassie Erasmus, Director of Rugby, at a Sunday lunchtime media conference. Erasmus underlined that point by getting straight to work on Sunday as the team began Rugby World Cup preparations in earnest for Friday’s match in Kumagaya, a 45-minute bullet train ride from Tokyo. The Springboks prepare in Seki until Wednesday when they will transfer to the match venue.

“I was very fortunate to have a great father, who unfortunately passed away three years ago. He taught me so much and I’m grateful for that. You get a lot of kids that don’t have that father figure in their lives. “He told me to never take life for granted. And he always told me to keep my head on my shoulders. As a youngster I was a bit of a loose canon and didn’t really focus on my football. It was more about the party life. He told me I had to choose, and I think I made the right choice. I’m glad that he saw me pursue my dream, and I believe he’s looking down from heaven and still watching me. I dedicate every game I play to him. And with me also being a father of a two-yearold now, I want to guide my child like that as well. So this is a great initiative. It’s important bonding time, and some of the players brought their own sons with. For us as footballers it’s important to have this time because we’re always on the road.” Cardoso says not a day goes by that he doesn’t think of his father, who he quite literally has close to his heart.
