Four suspects arrested for allegedly robbing Sportsmans Warehouse Four men were arrested for allegedly robbing Sportsmans Warehouse at The Glen Shopping Centre on Thursday, 29 January. According to police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo, officers spotted the men loading bags into a vehicle near Oakdene, Johannesburg South. When the police officers confronted the men, they fled. The officers chased and cornered the men after their getaway vehicle crashed on the corner of Comaro and Boundary roads. Masondo said the men then ran away, but were later caught and arrested. “On investigation, police found that the men had just committed a business

robbery at a sports shop at The Glen Shopping Centre, where they made off with cash and stock. The suspects were armed,” said Masondo.

The stolen goods were seized. A case of business robbery is under investigation, and the men are expected to appear in court soon.

Alberton residents take Graffitiville to the next level Graffitiville is owned and run by Tanya Boshoff and Sharlene Labuschagne. It is a passion project founded by two friends who love colour, art, beautiful things, creativity as well as the distinctiveness embodied in graffiti art. They believe in the words of Marc Anthony, that “if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life”. Graffitiville’s aims is to create a platform where graffiti art is celebrated, and new and existing artists get to showcase their work locally and internationally. This platform will also be a gateway to the artists’ own social media platform giving them more exposure. Graffitiville also intends to make graffiti present in our everyday lives by taking it off the walls and making it a part of personal spaces and style - giving graffiti

art fanatics the opportunity to own a unique (#1of1) art piece from one of the top graffiti artist in South Africa. It has been such an incredible journey for us. We had our first discussion on the 13th of July 2019 and our company was registered on the 15th of August. We had a very successful media launch at the Daville Bailie Gallery at Victoria Yards on the 26th of November. A local mother and son team, Maude and Gerald, are our bag and cushion manufacturers. They are located in Germiston. They live and work on the same premisses. We have massive plans for the future. One of those plans include job creation. We will not only be focussing on bags and cushions. Keep an eye out for more from us.

Die tema is “Tune up your

marriage”. Daarom is daar ‘n weeklikse huisgeloof stukkie

Maar mense, toe stap my eerste kleinseun, Eduard,

Ek moet tog eerlik wees? Uiteindelik is dit klaar. ‘n Ruk later is dit Damon se beurt.

Roses are red, violets are blue, make safety a priority too

Home Ownership Versus Renting When deciding whether to purchase a home or rent for the foreseeable future, it often pays to evaluate one’s full lifestyle and finances carefully, as you might find that one is wholly better for a particular person, says Richard Blignaut, Chief Operations Officer of City&Suburbs Realty. “The old adage is that owning a home is investing in one’s future instead of paying off someone else’s bond, thereby creating a stable living environment and putting cash into a solid investment. This might have been true until the late 2000’s but is property still a prudent investment choice, and will you not be better of renting,” asks Blignaut. “It is important to note that in many instances, renting gets you ‘a lot more house for your money’. From our portfolio we have calculated the average rent works out to 80% of what a bond repayment would be on properties over R1mil. The tenant is then in a position to use the money towards other investment instruments such as shares,” says Blignaut, who manages a substantial portfolio of properties in the Ekurhuleni area. A drawback of renting is that your

continuous occupation of the property might be ended if the owner decides to sell or not renew the lease, which then forces the tenant to move, even if they have been a good tenant and have the intention of staying on. “Owning one’s own home ensures consistency. You can live in it for as long as you pay your bond and can afford the upkeep. Many who buy a home look to live in it for the long term, possibly while their children are at school and university, and would possibly even leave it to their heirs,” says Blignaut. At present in South Africa, property is increasing in value at an average of 4.1% per annum, according to a recent Lightstone report, but some areas are better investment options than others. The same report states that: “Over the past couple of months the market activity has stabilised in the 3% to 8% range following a slowdown in recent months as shown by the provincial indices. The inland municipalities Ekurhuleni, City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg metros are growing stably at rates between 2% and 5% whereas the coastal municipalities are generally performing above this range.”

It’s the month of love, and what better way to celebrate it than to prioritise your safety and of those loved ones around you. Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT, says a good place to start is to make sure everyone in your household knows exactly what to do in case of an emergency. “People understandably panic when there’s an emergency making it difficult to think rationally and clearly. Sit down with your loved ones today, and talk to them about who they should contact. Make sure they have the correct contact numbers for the police, your neighbourhood watch, your security company, or your closest hospital saved on their phones.” Assessing your property and doing a thorough check to rule out any vulnerable areas should also be on the to-do list. “We suggest talking a walk around the property to look for anything that could help an intruder

access and exit the property easily. Are there low-hanging tree branches that can be used to climb over a fence or wall? Inspect the locks on perimeter gates and garage doors – are they in good condition, or can they be broken with some force? Be on the lookout for anything that can be used to force entry. And if you have an electric fence, when last did you test it,” says Hattingh. Inside the house, she suggests that window and door locks must be checked regularly. “It’s important that outward-leading doors, and windows, are locked from the inside when no-one is home and overnight. Regardless of the time of day, keep curtains or blinds drawn in a way that makes it difficult to see in from the outside. And, never leave valuables – or keys – anywhere that they can be seen or reached from a window.” If there is a home security system installed, she advises that it is regularly tested to ensure that it is in proper working condition when it’s needed most. “Test your alarms and beams at least once a month out of peak times. If you are unsure of how to do this, contact your security company.” Lastly, if there is any reason to believe that there is an intruder on the property, Hattingh’s advice is to never go outside to investigate. “Make sure that everyone in the household knows that they must immediately call the police or your security company. Try to remain on the line with them until officers arrive, and only venture outside once they indicate that it is safe to do so.” “Let’s enjoy this time of showing our love by being security conscious and getting our homes in order,” she concludes.

New Redruth beauty salon invites residents for “A CUT ABOVE THE REST”

Owning a hair and beauty salon was a dream come true when the owners of Nita Hair and Beauty opened shop

in May 2019. tame TIMES met with owners Hugh Vermaak and Guanita de Lange to discuss their New Redruth-based business. The salon is decorated in shades of purple as a reflection of the owner’s life philosophy. Purple is Guanita’s favourite colour because it stands for creative thinking. The salon is proof that their wildest dreams did come true. Years ago Hugh and Guanita joked about owning a salon but when she was retrenched from a Supply Chain company three years ago, they recognized the opportunity to act and realise the dream. “We started from scratch, did research and stepped out in faith,” they remember. The team at Nita’s offer a large range of products and services ranging from gel and acrylic nails to pedicures, massages, facials and facial peels to top-notch hair treatments and haircuts. Guanita and her team of beauticians and hairdressers make their clients feel at ease as she welcomes them: “Life is to be enjoyed and not endured. We want customers to feel rejuvenated and

inspired when they leave the salon.” The layout is neat and airy with treatment spaces flowing seamlessly from one to the next granting privacy in more secluded spaces for individualized treatments. Some of their Johannesburg and Pretoria-based clients book months in advance to secure their hair and massage appointments which is a purple feather in their cap given the number of established salons and brands in those cities. tame TIMES spoke to Marli Connoway, resident of Linden, Johannesburg, who was happy to recommend Nita’s: “When I found this salon, I knew I found a home for my hair and skin needs. I’m willing to drive for good service because they know how to take care of my long natural hair and my skin. The biggest compliment I received was when a colleague asked if I wear extensions because my hair is full and healthy. My secret is Nita’s and nothing else. The wellness of my skin has improved since I switched over to their facial products.” Amanda De Bruin from Alberton adores

the people and the atmosphere: “They have become family and I enjoy having my hair done by Nicky. The staff is always professional. I don’t have to over explain my needs because they know what to do and how I like it. That is what makes me come back every time.” New Redruth community members and potential clients from other areas are encouraged to pay a visit to the salon: “We want to make our customers feel at home, and we aim to be professional at all times but our goal is also to spread love and make each person feel comfortable. We want to offer a friendly environment. We wish to send our ladies home to their husbands feeling good about themselves.” Address: Bazinga on Penzance, 14 Penzance St, New Redruth, Alberton Trading Hours Mon-Fri 08:00 – 17:00 Sat 08:00 – 16:00 Open every first and last Sunday of the month 08:00-14:00

Stepping Into a Promising Future Women, especially in the corporate environment, need to empower themselves through networking and self-empowerment. “Women need to embrace tomorrow by communicating with each other and creating a support network which would help them to develop themselves and ensure that they become ‘future fit’,” said Sandra Ansorge, Integral Coach at Coachways. Coachways, in collaboration with SPAR South Rand Distribution Centre, recently hosted the third annual VUCA Women’s Networking Programme, highlighting the significant impact that women can make in the workplace, despite the many roles an individual woman is responsible for at any given time in her life. Most often women multi-task and wear the hats of wife, mother, student, employee and more. VUCA, an acronym for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous, makes reference to the circumstances and surroundings of an individual or a group. Although the concept is more than forty-years old, most people were previously not consciously aware of its impact. Whilst the VUCA programme has identified that South African women face greater developmental challenges due to cultural diversity, it aims to create sustainable networking environments, where women’s contributions are acknowledged and supported in an environment conducive to growth. Tabea Kabinde, a clinical psychologist, Chairperson of the Commission for Employment Equity and Managing Director of We Find Talent, a Pretoriabased recruitment agency, was the guest speaker at the event. She emphasized the value of networking and establishing

and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships. “Networking is not about working the room, but about establishing long-term relationships. Networking helps you develop and improve your skills set, stay on top of the latest trends in your industry, keep a pulse on the job market, meet prospective mentors, partners and clients, and gain access to the necessary resources that will grow your business and career,” Kabinde advised. She coaxed delegates to “identify people who do things better than you, as those are the people you should be networking with.” Carla Bouwer, a young SPAR retailer from Grabouw in the Western Cape said, “I felt really empowered being surrounded by a diverse contrast of women, and I’m certain that we all left with one common goal; to make our names and places heard in a male-dominated retail world.” “VUCA allows you to understand exactly who you are as a woman. Political and

gender-related comments should not slow you down, but fuel your engine to reach your goal,” said the successful businesswoman. Integral Coach and co-facilitator of the programme, Pam Steyn said it’s important for women to identify their power and own it. “VUCA is about helping women find their unique powers and then using it to create their personal brand in the harsh world of retail, where women need to make their mark,” said Steyn. Nonelela Xaba-Butjie, H.R. Executive for SPAR South Rand said, “Gone are the days where women in the workplace were known for PhD ‘Pull-Her Down’ Syndrome, where they often stepped on each other in trying to climb the corporate ladder. They had no support network to empower and nurture each other’s careers. This programme allows women to help each other grow in a conducive professional environment, sharing their successes and learning from their failures.”

ANC’s head-in-the-sand approach will not improve service delivery By Cllr. Malcolm Maifala The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is less than impressed with the ANC’s approach to addressing issues faced by residents and businesses when it comes to service delivery in the Metro. At the Council Meeting in November 2019, the DA asked the MMC responsible for Customer Relations Management, Cllr. Nomandlosi Nkosi, questions pertaining to the efficiency of the call centre. While the DA notes that the numbers reflect a picture of a functioning call centre, the concern remains the manner in which residents are received when phoning into the facility. On a number of occasions, resident’s calls have gone unanswered by agents when looking to log service delivery complaints. The MMC was questioned over what actions she was taking to ensure that professionalism improves amongst call centre agents, and to the DA’s dismay, as the political head of the Department, she was unable to answer the question. If anything, she seems surprised by the revelation that residents are not receiving the quality services from the call centre they have been promised. In addition, the DA remains concerned about the amount of calls that relate to power outages in the City. It is misleading that Council merely notes that calls referred to the Energy Department are

higher than the previous quarter, but does not report on the outcomes of these calls. It is the view of the DA that the Executive needs to account to residents and businesses within the Metro on what plan of action they have to ensure the lights stay on. The constant power outages are a threat to jobs at one of Gauteng’s industrial nodes - Alrode. Over the past week, businesses have approached the DA expressing anger at how they are losing thousands of Rands on a daily basis as a result of the power outages. A loss of income by businesses in the City will lead to a loss of jobs. At a time where the country needs to grow the economy, the ANC-led coalition in Ekurhuleni simply cannot afford to hide their head in the sand while residents remain in the dark. The DA believes that the ANC-led coalition government cannot afford to have a dysfunctional call centre while the Metro bleeds jobs. It is high time that Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mzwandile Masina, spends more time improving service delivery standards throughout the City. The DA will continue to hold the Executive to account in ensuring that residents of Ekurhuleni have a professional and efficient call centre. Only the Democratic Alliance can built One South Africa for all.

Executive Mayor Masina Reaffirms The City’s Commitment Towards Sound Fiscal Management In his address to Council last week, Executive Mayor Mzwandile Masina provided a detailed assessment of the City’s performance in terms of good governance and sound fiscal management. This takes place on the backdrop of the Auditor General having recently released their Audit Findings on the City of Ekurhuleni. The City achieved the following highlights from the audit: • The City of Ekurhuleni achieved an unqualified audit for the financial year 2018/2019; • The City received a Clean Audit on financial statements; • The City incurred zero unauthorised, fruitless and wasteful expenditure (for the second consecutive year); • Irregular expenditure has decreased from R215 million in the previous financial year to R5 million in the 2018/2019 annual review; • The Collection rate stood at 91% for the financial year in review • The City has complied with 30 days payment of all invoices; • Capex expenditure for the year stood at 94.31%; • Overall Grant Funding spending for the year is 94%; • Cash on hand for the year R3,5 billion; • The City has performed very well on cost-containment worth R138,6 million for year under review; • Management of both Water and Electricity losses are both below National Standards; • The City achieved a 70% reduction in the number of non-compliant paragraphs recorded in the audit report; • The City continues to shoulder the cost of

a social package of R4 billion per annum; “We achieved this great result through various critical mechanisms. For one thing, most instances of irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure that were reported in previous years were subjected to an investigation to ensure that consequence management is instituted by the City against transgressors,” Mayor Masina said in Council this morning. The City of Ekurhuleni remains the leader in the area of good governance and financial management amongst the three Metro’s in Gauteng Province. “It is only in so doing that we can all hold our heads up high and proudly proclaim ourselves as public servants who served with pride and distinction. To do less than we committed would be to betray not just our promises, but the people of Ekurhuleni. We dare not commit so atrocious an act,” said Mayor Masina

Primrose SAPS arrested suspects for dealing in liquor without a license The Primrose police recently arrested four suspects, aged between 30 and 51, on a charge of dealing in liquor without a license. The arrests were made in the Makause and Marathon informal settlements during a police operation aimed at cracking down on the illegal sale of alcohol in Primrose’s informal settlements. “We hope that by continuously holding operations of this nature we will curb some of the liquor-related crimes taking

place in the area like assault, domestic violence, rape and loud music,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. “We appeal to the community to refrain from selling liquor without valid licenses. We will continue conducting similar operations in our precinct.” All of the arrested suspects were taken to the Primrose Police Station following their arrests. Their taverns were closed and the establishments’ alcohol confiscated.

Missing teachers confirmed dead

Shooting in Hennie Alberts

On Friday, 30 January a shooting ensued on Hennie Alberts Street in Brackendowns. According to CPS Security, four suspects wearing balaclavas in a white BMW 3 series jumped out and shot at the victim’s vehicle. “The victim was followed after attempting to exchange foreign currency,” added CPS Security.

National Paramedical Services said the victim was treated with a small laceration to the upper body, possibly from being struck with something, not from a gunshot. CPS Security advises all residents to be cautious and stay vigilant of their surroundings when going to banks or drawing money.

Pupils and teachers at Joburg’s Riverlea High School are struggling to come to terms with the death of three of the school’s teachers, who apparently lost their lives in a car accident. The teachers were last seen on Saturday, 25 January at a parents’ meeting at the school and didn’t report for duty on Monday, 27 January. However, while searching for them over two days after realizing they were missing, families and colleagues of the teachers were hit with the news that they had allegedly died in a car accident, and that their bodies were at a mortuary in Everton. The trio, two men and a woman aged between 25 and 29, taught commerce, life orientation and math. The Star knows the identities of the deceased but the provincial Department of Education has not yet publicly released their names. Two of them had joined the school last year after leaving university, while the other had been with the school for eight years. It is believed the new car of one of the teachers, from Orange Farm, was broken into on Friday, 24 January and cellphones belonging to two of the teachers stolen. A teacher from the school, Clarence

Daves, said: “After the meeting on Saturday they went, together, to fix the car in Orange Farm and ended up braaing. “On Monday, 27 January they didn’t show up and the principal was worried because he couldn’t get hold of them. We tried to look for them with no success until Wednesday morning, when the principal broke the news that they were found in a mortuary.” Ashley Harris, the school principal, said the trio were always together. “I tried calling one of them because my assumption was that they were together. After failing to get them, I left it there and took it as absenteeism.” When they did not report on Tuesday, Harris asked a teacher to take him to where the teacher who owned the car lived. When they got there, neighbours and a tenant told them they had last seen the trio on Friday. “We went to the police station in Orange Farm to check for any reports about them, and ended up reporting missing people. They took a statement from the teacher that I was with and in the evening the teacher called me, saying that there were reports of three people who were involved in a car accident with the car that fitted the description we gave the police,” said Harris. The teachers’ families were notified and one of them went to identify the teachers, and confirmed the deaths. Harris said after breaking the news to his staff and the learners who were taught by the deceased, everyone was in tears and a state of disbelief. Speaking to The Star, one of the learners, in Grade 12, who was crying uncontrollably, said: “I was taught by one of them, the other two were my friends.” Officials from the department visited the school to offer their condolences. Regional Chief Director Dennis Mascuacua said: “We have deployed our team of psychologists for the teachers and the learners. We have also provided the school with three new teachers.

Suspect arrested at Meyersdal Mall On Friday, 30 January, a lady’s cellphone was stolen whilst she was walking through the Meyersdal Mall. The getaway vehicle was chased by a RAM employee and resulted in one suspect being arrested and the stolen cellphone being recovered. The getaway vehicle managed to escape to nearby Mall of the South. Be on the lookout for a Maroon Ford Fiesta, the registration is unknown. The vehicle was also involved in another incident in the New Redruth area. If spotted please contact our CPS Security control room immediately on 011 024 2426.

Twizza Super School Series crowns

SA’s Best Athletics School

The Twizza Super School Series produced a riveting display of school’s track and field competition on Saturday, 1 February 2020 at the Bestmed TuksAthletics Stadium with Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Menlo Park High School Girls and Mixed Team claiming the coveted title of SA’s Best

Athletics School (in their respective categories). Affectionately dubbed the “North vs South” battle, the Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale saw 46 of SA’s leading athletics schools (1125 athletes) participate on the day. Qualifying schools were required to enter 15 member teams

(Boys, Girls and/or Mixed) across two age groups U17 and U19. Events that could be entered included: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, short hurdles, long hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shotput, discus and javelin for age groups U17 & U19. “We are excited that we started the season with a bang,” said ASA President, Aleck Skhosana, “Even more thrilling is that we are affording future stars a chance to experience top level competition while they are still at school. With the SABC now on board as the official host broadcaster, the future is brighter.” “The success of the series encourages us to now look at populating it to other areas beyond the Gauteng and Cape Town legs to give it more access to other students as well across the country. From here we will start exploring how to grow this competition to other countries who may want to send their athletes here. Not only are we referring to countries in Africa but also from all the other six continents.” “This was our first live broadcast with the SABC since signing the new agreement this past Wednesday. the agreement has seen SABC’s COO Ian Plaatjes coming to Tuks to ensure that everything was in order. Of interest as well, was to see a lot of senior coaches including Paul Gorries the national relays coach and elite athletes. We look forward to the new instalment of the series.” According to Eckhart Potgieter from Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, it feels wonderful to be the best boy’s school in the country. “It feels unreal. The Twizza Super School Series is a good opportunity to show just who the best school is. And we did it. I am glad that we could be part of it. As a team we motivated each other just by attending practice every day. We are committed. We just did our best and supported each other at all of the races.” Potgieter came 2nd in the 200m and 4th in the Boys U19 100m. “Winning the trophy today is so unbelievable,” says Janie Blignaut from Menlo Park (Girls Team). “Twizza has given this opportunity to us. It was a great event and we really looked forward to it. We didn’t know how it would go between us and Affies (referring to Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool). We were so close and they can definitely be proud of their performance here today. Menlo has the ‘gees’, it’s just our thing.” Blignaut finished 5th in the Girls U19 200m and 4th in the Long Jump. According to Markus Kotzee, from Menlo Park High School, winning in the mixed team category is breathtaking. “I cannot describe how good if feels. The Twizza Series is an unbelievable event. We get a lot of exposure. It’s great to compete against the best schools in the country. Motivating each other is just a Menlo thing. It’s what we do.” Kotzee came 2nd in the Boys U19 Shotput and 3rd in the Discus. “The Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale exceeded our expectations,” says Lance Coertzen, Twizza Group Marketing Manager. “We commend each and every school (and athlete) for what they have achieved today. Your dedication and enthusiasm truly inspired us. Congratulations to Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Menlo Park High School, you’ve earned the title of SA’s Best Athletics School and along with that, bragging rights for a year. The Twizza Super School Series has provided us with an excellent platform to support a sport that we believe in, while creating an opportunity for scholars and parents to connect with our brand and experience the taste of our unique products. It is a privilege to be a part of this spectacular experience. We will treasure the special moments that were made. We look forward to the new season and trust that more schools will sign up to #TasteTheMoment with Twizza.”
