“WE WERE SAD TO SEE HIM GO BUT ALSO GRATEFUL THAT WE WERE ABLE TO HELP HIM RETURN TO HIS LAND, WHERE HE WANTS TO SPEND HIS LAST DAYS,” A 41-year-old patient of Stepping Stone Hospice, Nchemty Ozongashu, has returned to his beloved homeland, Cameroon, after spending six weeks in the hospice’s in-patient unit in New Market Park. Nchemty, a worker for Green Pece, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in January 2018 and after various treatments in Cameroon, he came to South Africa earlier this year to seek treatment and appropriate palliative care. ‘During his stay with us, we got to know a very intelligent and humble man.” says Stepping Hospice sister, Margi Bollman. “Two weeks ago he expressed a wish to return to Cameroon, and we started the planning to get him home.

We believed that he was stable enough and after the various doctors who had treated him in South Africa, gave him the clearance to fly, the time came to say goodbye,” Sister Margi explains. A doctor was flown in from Lagos to accompany Nchemty on his journey, a trip funded by his employers. During his stay in the unit, Nchemty was supported by his uncle Philemon and his work colleagues from Green Peace. “We were sad to see him go but also grateful that we were able to help him return to his land, where he wants to spend his last days,” says Tersia Burger, CEO at Stepping Stone Hospice. Seen here is Hospice CEO, Tersia Burger, saying goodbye to Nchemty Ozongashu as he prepares to return to Cameroon.

Dear Editor, What could’ve turned into another criminal incident that we are all too familiar with, turned into a good news story that we don’t hear enough of. Last week I forgot my cell phone on the roof of my car and drove off from a petrol station near the Fresh Produce Market. Shortly after that I realised my blunder and returned to the station. The phone was nowhere in sight. I got someone to call my number. Although someone picked up my phone, we got cut off. Later that afternoon I got someone to call the number again. At that stage I

Mense is moeilik soms. Ek was so verontwaardig en dominee probeer net vure doodslaan. So is ons klomp “ou tannies” op die koorbankies

did not expect anyone answer the phone as I had presumed that someone had stolen the phone. Surprisingly, someone did pick up. He explained that a driver from Cleveland-based Kayley’s Belgium Chocolates, Bonga Mhlawuli had seen the phone on the road and had picked up the phone and later handed it to his manager, Max Dube in the hope that someone would call to claim the phone. When I met with Mr Mhlawuli and Mr Dube, Mr Dube explained how his driver constantly checked if someone had called to claim the phone as he was most concerned that someone had lost their phone. Mr Mhlawuli didn’t have to return the phone but he chose to do the right thing! This simple act of kindness has reignited my belief in humanity. In a world of negativity and bad news this thoughtful act demonstrates that we are surrounded by decent and caring people who make this world a better place. Thank you Bonga Mhlawuli for being one of the good people! met die diva. So storm sy toe daar uit. Sondag was sy wel daar. Al die hoogmoed en houding weg. Tip - Hoogmoed kom altyd tot ‘n val.

CASBAH -

The original Alberton Roadhouse

Ekurhuleni city manager honours metro police and emergency services women tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet the Casbah Roadhouse franchise owner, Johanne Grove who aims to give the community a warm, friendly and authentic roadhouse experience. Their new premises is at the Alberton Crossing shopping centre located on the corner of Voortrekker and Helston Roads. Speaking to Johanne tame TIMES learned that on the 29th of January 1955, Casbah Roadhouse was established by Sylvia Kongos and her brother Peter Theologo. The other brothers, Evangelo (Ponch), Russel (Lucky), Costa & Johnny soon joined them. The name “Casbah” was taken from the show Casablanca. After gaining experience in that first family venture, the brothers went their separate ways and opened their own roadhouses. Ponch Theologo is known as the “King of Roadhouses”. Ponch always believed in “VFM” - Value For Money. Everything that you made for a customer you had to make as if you were making it for a friend. He started his roadhouse career in Brakpan, but then went on to open roadhouses in Alberton, Wemmer Pan, Johannesburg, Malvern, Benoni, Vereeniging, Krugersdorp and Port Elizabeth. “The first Casbah Roadhouse in Alberton was launched in 1963 in central Alberton. The new premises is at the Alberton Crossing shopping centre on Voortrekker and Helston Roads,” said Johanne. The Casbah Roadhouses are individually owned establishments and are fully functional family restaurants.

There is a comfortable seating plan and great tasty food is served along with an enjoyable family time. The menus consist of a wide range of Original Casbah dishes including Casbah Famous Burger, Sunday Lunches and much more. Casbah has been an institution in Alberton with most of the residents having eaten there since they were youngster. When the tame TIMES asked Johanne what inspired him to own a Casbah Roadhouse, he said “It took a lot of hard work and time from early in the morning till late at night. We serve our customers 7 days a week in the restaurant and in our parking lots. It has been very rewarding. Any restaurant owner will tell you this business is like a drug – once it gets into your blood you can’t get it out,” said Johanne.

Alberton Models Shine at IMTA Convention In New York City

The 32nd New York IMTA Convention kicked off from 15 to 19 July at the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan. Figures Finesse International Model and Talent Agency participated at this prestigious event and took 20 South African contestants that qualified for the IMTA from 19 branches. Most of our local contestants are models with a sprinkle of actors, dancers and singers. The IMTA Model and Talent South Africa has been an active member of the IMTA since 1987 and have been scouting, supporting and recruiting contestants for New York yearly. The International Modelling and Talent Association (IMTA) is a professional organization of modelling and Talent training centres from around the world that was founded, and started operating in New York City in the summer of 1987. It has been a constant fixture in the global talent industry since then and hosts two annual events, one in Los Angeles in January and one in New York City in July. These conventions bring together on average 350-400 fashion and

talent agents, casting directors, personal managers, network representatives and music producers from all over the globe in search of discovering new, exciting talent. The international agents who are judging are not only selecting the winners but are also scouting for new, raw talent. The IMTA Conventions provide a secure, professional venue to market talent and to compete with the best in the entertainment industry. There are five competitive divisions, namely modelling, acting, dancing, singing and song writing. The contestants compete in a minimum of six different competitions where their talent and skills are showcased to the agents during this weeklong event as well as attending various seminars and workshops presented by the talent agents. Each of the IMTA competitions are designed to show case potential, ability and look. At the end of the week, an awards luncheon and gala evening are held where the top contestants are announced and awarded medals and scholarships. There is also a call back session where the agents hand-

pick their contestants that they want to get to know better and personally interview them. This gives the contestants a chance at being discovered and having possible future representation in their chosen fields. The IMTA is well known for starting actors, singers, models and dancers on the path to a successful career and helps to build self-confidence. The IMTA has discovered several rising stars such as Elijah Woods, Joel West, Katie Holmes, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Eva Longoria, Brandon Routh, Jessica White, Tyson Ballou, and Sara Dawson. This year over 5000 contestants participated from all over the globe. For such a small group, the Figures Finesse International Model and Talent Agency had a wonderfully successful time in New York at the IMTA Convention. Two foreign suspects arrested in Palm Ridge for bribery

Two foreign businessmen were arrested in Palm Ridge for attempting to bribe the Metro Police on 30 July. While on patrol looking for drug dealers in Palm Ridge, EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) arrested two Pakistani nationals who offered them a bribe of more than R1 000 to overlook the fact that they were operating a business unlawfully. They business was running within a residential premise from a container on Tritonia Street in Palm Ridge.

“The two suspects’ papers were also found to be shady. Faced with the two offences, the duo decided to offer the DEU members a bribe of R1 530 to evade arrest and were immediately arrested,” Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the EMPD spokesperson, said. The men were detained at Eden Park Police Station and charged with bribery as well as contravention of Section 49 of the Immigration Act. The arrested men, aged 22 and 42, are expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

Women travellers most vulnerable

On the Women’s Danger Index 2019, compiled by travel bloggers and researchers, Asher and Lyric Fergusson, South Africa has been ranked as the most dangerous destination for solo female travelers. Various factors were taken into account and South Africa scored the worst on safety to walk alone at night, intentional homicide of women as well as nonpartner sexual violence. Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT, says unfortunately many tourists do not realise the risks of walking alone or at night in many parts of our cities. Hotel owners and B&B establishments do need to emphasise the risks and ensure their visitors follow some common sense guidelines to remain safe. She suggests the following security protocols for guests: • Familiarise your visitors with the contact details for the police/emergency services in your area.

• Advise them where the nearest hospital is located. • If you have a security system in your B&B, ensure guests are aware of how it works. • Advise tourists to leave their valuables at the place they are staying when they are out sightseeing. • Advise your guests which crime hotspots to avoid. • Advise guests not to sightsee alone but rather to go out in groups or with a reputable tour operator. • Advise guests never to withdraw money at night at isolated ATMs. “Criminals know tourists and out-oftowners are usually relaxed and not always on their guard. Make sure they have the relevant emergency numbers pre-programmed on their mobile phones. By following these simple security protocols your visitors will be able to have a far safer and relaxing break in our country,” concludes Hattingh.

Alleged arms dealer nabbed in Brackenhurst

Brackendowns SAPS together with Brackendowns CPF and CPS Security conducted a sting operation run by Mr Steyn after information was received regarding a house in Christiaan Street in Brackenhurst where unlicensed firearms and ammunition was hidden. Further information was received that the firearms were being rented out for various robberies. Cst Venter, Cst Molopi and Geoff Steyn searched the house and found 2 x unlicensed firearms and 309 x rounds of various calibers of live ammunition was recovered. One white male suspect was arrest-

ed and the suspect was then taken to Brackendowns SAPS where he was charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Well done to all the parties involved.

Young Equestrians Jumping For The Stars

By: Candice Gracie

Dedication, hard work and tenacity surely has its rewards. This is evident in the outstanding results received by The IEA Elite equestrian team at the SANESA Sedibeng district Qualifiers, held at Penbritte Equestrian Centre in Eikenhof over the past few months. Makhosonke Thabethe (15) & Dale Claassen (14), two young and aspiring equestrian athletes from The IEA Elite have ensured that their long hours in the saddle, passion for the sport and commitment to always aiming for the stars (literally) have paid off. They have been selected to compete at the SANEA Gauteng Finals, to be held at Misty Meadows in Pretoria on 9, 10 & 11 August 2019.

Makhosonke will be competing in the Team A Working Hunter & Team B Show Jumping. Dale will be competing in the Team A Performance Riding classes. They will be competing to secure their spot at the SANESA Nationals, to be held in September. The younger equestrians made certain that they too have their time in the spotlight. The “Level 0” riders have secured their spot at the Newcomer’s Challenge, to be held in conjunction with Nationals during the September/ October public school vacation. Selemo Motswai (5) and Julian Grobler (12) will be representing The IEA Elite in the Working Riding, Performance Riding & Equitation classes. A great achievement
