Kinder College spreading EDITOR hope to little cancer fighters A NOTE FROM THE

The COVID-19 virus presents us with an unprecedented set of circumstances that are changing on a day-to-day basis The Department of Health, together with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) have deployed a team to manage the case and implement the necessary steps to contain the situation. The City of Ekurhuleni would like to assure its communities that there is no need to panic as there is no confirmed case of coronavirus disease in the region and in Gauteng at large. While they are aware that there is a sense of worry and panic throughout the country following the confirmed case of COVID 19 in KwaZulu-Natal, the City appeals for calmness as there is no need for panic at this stage. In their efforts to deal with any cases of Corona Virus in our space, the City has established and activated the Outbreak Team, which mainly consists of healthcare workers. The City of Ekurhuleni is also part of the Joint Operation Centre dealing with the outbreak consisting of officials from all spheres of government.

Kinder College hosted a Cupcakes of Hope Party to raise some funds for little cancer fighters. Some of the mommies donated cupcakes and all cupcakes were sold at R10 each. “We were able to raise R3740 – every drop in the bucket help. It was wonderful to see parents getting involved and even more so, all our ladies working together. We are blessed to have support from everyone. We want to thank all our mommies and daddies who supported us to help raise funds for them,” says Kinder College. Watch this space as we plan to raise even more in our next Cupcake of Hope party.

Alberton Figures Finesse Modelling Open Day The year started off very busy for Alberton Figures Finesse Modelling and Talent agency studio in Randhart. The owner, Melanie Van Den Heever and her teachers held an Open Day for the public to come and see what the agency is all about. There was a Pop a Balloon stall where the visitors won various prizes and A Phat Party stall with all sorts of toys and sweets. The information session educated everybody on what courses the agency has to offer and how it builds your child’s self-esteem and confidence. It was big success and hopefully there will be many more new faces at the studio enjoying the camaraderie they have to offer.

NO NEED TO PANIC

ABOUT CORONAVIRUS Coronavirus and South Africa: Here’s what you need to know By Nathan Craig and Lethu Nxumalo

The City of Ekurhuleni would like to assure its communities that there is no need to panic as there is no confirmed case of coronavirus disease in the region and in Gauteng at large. While we are aware that there is a sense of worry and panic throughout the country following the confirmed case of COVID 19 in KwaZulu-Natal, the City appeals for calmness as there is no need for panic at this stage. In our efforts to deal with any cases of Corona Virus in our space, the City has established and activated the Outbreak Team, which mainly consists of healthcare workers. The City of Ekurhuleni is also part of the Joint Operation Centre dealing with the outbreak consisting of officials from all spheres of government. There are no specific measures currently recommended to prevent COVID-2019. However, the following can provide protection against infection with coronaviruses and many other viruses that are more common in South Africa: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer; • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands; • Avoid close contact with people who are sick; • Stay home when you are sick and try and keep distance from others at home;

• Cover your cough or sneeze with flexed elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the bin; • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces; • Avoid contact with farm or wild animals (alive or dead), animal markets, and products that come from animals (such as uncooked meat). While the first cases probably involved exposure to an animal source, the virus now seems to be spreading from personto-person. Thus far the majority of cases have occurred in people with close physical contact to infected persons and healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-2019. Current symptoms reported for patients with COVID-2019 includes, mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing. Reported illnesses have ranged from infected people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. Anyone with any of the symptoms is advised to go to the nearest health care facility. It is a fact that currently there is no vaccine for COVID-2019. Officials in China have intensified efforts to contain the spread of the virus. Leading the City of Ekurhuleni Outbreak Team is Dr Joseph Sepuya and Dr Ronnel Kellerman who can be reached at 082 826 1987 and 084 974 6051, respectively.

Despite calls for calm from the national Department of Health, fear is on the rise as new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in South Africa on Saturday. The second case is that of a 39-year-old Gauteng woman who had travelled with the Hilton man who remains in isolation at Grey’s hospital in Pietermaritzburg after testing positive for the coronavirus. A third South African, working in South Korea, had his plans to return to the country halted after he also tested positive at a South Korean airport. Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said the South African embassy confirmed that the man who worked in Daegu, had tested positive. “He was due to return to the country but has remained in South Korea. We are following up with the South Korean authorities to obtain formal confirmation of where our citizen is being treated.” Celesti Matthews of Pretoria identified the man in South Korea as Hein Cloete, her brother, who had gone to Daegu, the epicentre of the South Korean outbreak, to teach English. “His contract and accommodation lease expired, and he needed to proceed home. At the airport in Incheon, South Korean authorities detected a high fever and moved him to a hospital he called a ‘basement’. They performed further tests and found him to test positive for Covid-19.” Matthews said she was contacted by Cloete for the first time on Monday and he had already had four days of treatment. “Phones are not readily available to patients as local families sometimes overrun the facilities, but they made exceptions for him to keep us updated. We understand their concern and are grateful for caring for and treating my brother,” she said. “He sounded medicated but said he was receiving good care and good food. He said he was not aware of any other South African being treated but did see a British patient.” Matthews said the last time she spoke to her brother, his condition was under control. “We do not consider my brother a highrisk case, and we are hopeful for a speedy recovery. “We have since been in contact with the South African embassy in Korea as well as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the Department of Health.” She understood there was protocol to get her brother back, but awaited further guidance from local authorities. “We have not heard from him for a couple of days, and this uncertainty is killing us and our parents. They are stressed out, but knowing that the local embassy is attempting to track him and make contact means a lot to the family, and I am sure it means a lot to him.” Mkhize confirmed that the two infected people in South Africa had been in direct

contact with each other. He said that the whereabouts of the other eight travellers were known to the department and that they remained in isolation as testing was conducted. “We are now awaiting their results. The second patient, who tested positive, will be immediately admitted to one of Gauteng’s public hospitals designated to receive Covid-19 positive patients.” On Saturday Mkhize said that around 151 South African citizens being repatriated from Wuhan in China amid the outbreak will immediately be placed in quarantine when they arrive in South Africa. “About 151 South African nationals will be repatriated. They are currently living under lock down conditions following the (COVID-19) outbreak. We wish to reiterate that none of the affected individuals has been diagnosed with the virus, nor have they exhibited any symptoms thereof. “As an added precautionary measure, it was decided that upon arrival in South Africa these citizens will be placed in quarantine. We can confirm that government is currently sourcing suitable accommodation facilities all over the country. This process is now almost concluded. This includes hotels, game reserves, and resorts in remote areas,” he said. “We also assure the public that the quarantine facility will have very strict military security parameters. These are some of the measures that will be put in place to ensure that communities that live nearby such a facility are not in any way exposed and there is no contact with people who will be under quarantine,” Mkhize said. George Harris, Hilton College headmaster, sent out a statement on Thursday saying a pupil had on Tuesday visited The Quarry Centre medical rooms that had been visited by the infected Hilton man. “The general practitioner who treated the infected person was not present, and a medical professional has provided assurance that there is no risk of this boy contracting or transmitting the coronavirus,” he said. Muzi Mahlambi, the KZN Department of Education spokesperson, said a meeting would be convened by the department for all principals within Pietermaritzburg before the end of the week. “The purpose would be to allay fears brought on by the confirmation of a patient being infected by the virus. We will have people coming to present to the principals about the virus, have people speak to them about managing fake news so that schools do not get disturbed unnecessarily.” Mahlambi said all parents needed to remain calm as there would not be a case that Mkhize would not have knowledge of. “All of us must take our cue from the Department of Health. And, as the KZN MEC for Education, Kwazi Mshengu, said, there

From the bench to the starting lineup One can only wonder what goes through the minds of reserve players who are constantly sitting on the bench, hoping to have some play time. Coaches will always select the best players for the starting lineup, who in most cases are genetically gifted, including mentally and physically stronger than reserve players. There is hope for the vast majority of players longing to join this elite group. Working twice as hard, eating proper nutrition, plenty of rest, persistence and a positive attitude are key. Training 30 minutes extra, four times per week in mornings before school will help bump you up a few steps towards your goal. Exercises such as

weight training, push ups, crunches or sprints will help increase your strength and endurance. A proper nutritional plan including combining Low Gi carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fats, clean water, vitamin and minerals will help sustain your energy and repair muscle. The foods below are the best combination to help with your quest. Oats, whole wheat health bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes, fruits, mixed nuts, veggies, broccoli, green salads, avocado, chicken breast, eggs, tuna, milk and cottage cheese. Athletes needs at least 9 hours sleep to help repair and grow muscle, which in turn will increase size and strength.

Having a positive attitude and surrounding yourself with people with the same mind set will increase your chances of success. Avoid all naysayers with negative attitudes who always put you down, by telling you its impossible to achieve your goals. Your road ahead will be difficult, but through hard work and perseverance, you can become an elite athlete. Alberton resident inspires women Laurette Marais, started Moyo Africa Empire after winning the title of Mrs Africa Classic 2019. Through Moyo she inspires, uplifts and heals the broken-hearted through various community projects, feeding schemes and awareness programs. Marais speaks and attends many networking events that focus on women empowerment and upliftment. In 2020, she hopes that many more doors for new ventures will open through Moyo Africa Empire that will further impact South Africa for a brighter future for all women and girls. This is what Laurette had to say to tame TIMES: I am blessed to share thoughts, aspirations and first of all hope with all of you. I personally experienced many trials and tribulations in life that left me despondent and feeling hopeless. I am incredibly fortunate and grateful to have a courageous husband that has walked this earth with me for 27 years. Our 3 adult children are our proud legacy. And even though our life was blessed I realized that I had wings but didn’t know how to spread them and fly effortlessly. My children who were the main focus of every day were gradually leaving home. I had to watch with mixed feelings how they spread their wings, how they were able to fly effortlessly because I facilitated it. You may ask why mixed feelings. Let me tell you, on the one hand I felt proud and happy that they were fine. On the other hand I felt WHAT NEXT? Where do I fit in now. What is my purpose? Do I carry on serving my family members for the rest of my life? Do I carry on doing what is expected by society? Rules made by whom? I felt as a mother and wife that I lost my identity. That again goes hand in hand with an utter feeling of hopelessness. And then after much contemplation I realized in 2017 that life offers far more than merely being a mother and a wife. I realized having good friends whom I can laugh and share many things with, doing what makes me happy and serving a wider community is purposeful. Dancing and planning getaways which shouldn’t cost a fortune is food for the soul. I also realized that having a purpose in life should not just be about myself though.

Hence me becoming part of the Mrs. Africa pageant. Definitely not to be seen and known for outward beauty, because that’s not a given and can change any day. When the pageant organizer’s husband Mr. Nick Botha, whom I accidentally met at a friend’s beauty studio recruited me to be part of the pageant, I was skeptical at first. I realized long ago that I want to empower, inspire, uplift and heal the broken hearted, especially women and young girls. This was all new to me, but I found my passion . I’ve learned to be able to find yourself, YOU need to do some serious self-reflecting. And by doing that you need to start believing in your abilities. I have learned to focus on this journey and being part of this competition was one of the biggest highlights of my life. From being a housewife to becoming a finalist for this pageant was not easy……believe you me. I am grateful to all involved who gave me the opportunity to discover the new Laurette. At the age of 51, I had to overcome my fears of failure and decided to go for the win. This time around I only have to answer for myself. To pursue my own dreams and to keep my ears open for what my Maker really expects from me. My very first charity event was on the 18th of July 2018 at Baviaanspoort in Kameeldrift at a nursery school in the most rural of rural area’s that I’ve ever seen. This was an experience I will never forget and

for the first time after many years I was in the position where I could give something back to the lost, the poor and the broken hearted. Being a Mrs Africa Classic Finalist gave me the ability to spread my wings and chase my dream of standing for what I so desperately believe in. And being able to be the vehicle through which people are being reached globally really excites me and humbles me at the same time. To love unconditionally and to give hope where all hope is lost has become my passion. My other charities followed at Hope School in Westcliff, AMCARE and then The Teddy Bear Foundation for the sexually abused. I’m also involved with die Epic Foundation for women who were ra ped. By getting involved with these charities I have found myself, my passions and my joy again. I live to my fullest potential. I have joined Latin American and ballroom dancing classes for I received bronze medals and for all the eight dances that I have done in my first competition. I am grateful that all these wonderful things have happened to me. I don’t think it would just naturally happen. When I won the first title as Mrs Africa Classic 2019 at Buffelspoort I wouldn’t have dreamt that I would also win Mrs Globe Classique to represent Africa Palm Springs USA. In June of the same year I also won the Family Award at the Globe pageant. I want to thank God for all these wonderful opportunities. To Caroline Boldwin Botha and her husband who discovered me. Thank you so much for inspiring women to the best version of themselves. Mrs Boldwin has been part of the Pageant industry for twenty years and I honor her dedication and her vision to make a difference in women’s lives. And last but not the least I want to share that your past will remind you but it will not define you. Don’t be a prisoner to the past. But look upon it with kindness and compassion to rewrite the outcome of your destiny. Live, love, laugh and forgive more. A woman with a vision empowers an empire of woman to inspire uplift and heal the broken hearted. So I beg of you never stop dreaming and follow your heart.

Basset hound double trouble day in Brackendowns

Talk about a dogs’ life! What are the odds that in two days Fidelity ADT and Fox Security would be called upon to rescue not one but three basset hounds in Brackendowns.

The first incident occurred when Fin the Basset got himself stuck in his owner’s gate. Linda Goodenough, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT says she received a call from Fox Security saying one of her client’s basset hounds was stuck in the gate. It appears the inquisitive basset tried to climb through the bars of the gate, only to find he was a little bit fatter than he thought and there he was stuck – not being able to move forward or reverse back. “The response from caring neighbours was fantastic. They all rallied around making sure Fin had water and was as comfortable as one can be lodged between two poles.” Not sure what to do, Goodenough called her husband who runs a wall company. The Taller Waller van stopped, with

equipment and ladders and provided whatever was needed to free this little guy. With a little bit of tugging and pushing, he finally slipped through the gates and was home safe. Goodenough says as luck would have it, no sooner was Fin rescued, the team had to rescue another two Bassets who had managed to get out of their gate. Once again Fox and Fidelity ADT worked together to return the canine adventurers to their rightful home. The final episode in the “tale” is the intrepid Fin was once again able to get himself lodged in the gate this week. This time 4TH Dimension rescued him and Goodenough took him home for the afternoon. The relieved homeowner collected him that evening.

Emergency Services Welcome New Regional Managers aboard

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency promoted two of its own to the senior positions. This is in line with the City of Ekurhuleni plan to promote and retain its staff. Mr Mannetjie Johannes Riet currently based in Leon Ferreira Fire station in Boksburg together with Mamowelase Agnes Makwane based in Brakpan Fire Station respectively, have been promoted from Senior District Manager positions to Regional positions respectively as of the 1st March 2020. Each will be managing ten Fire Stations from each region. The two were the middle management officers. Now they are moving to higher regional management positions, to administer the Northern and Eastern operational regions within the City of Ekurhuleni`s Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. From being junior firefighters in the past twenty -five years of both their services and growing through the ranking structures to Regional managers, is a milestone achievement for both managers.

Head of the Department, Sam Sibande, said: “Congratulations for being a part of our team. The division Emergency Services welcomes both of you alike as Regional Managers. We are looking forward for the division`s success from you. We believe that your abilities will help upgrade community service delivery to greater potentials and to grow bigger than it is,” he said. The two positions were vacated by managers due to resignations. Different managers have been acting in the two vacant positions. During the welcoming session in the presence of the HOD, was the Divisional Head emergency services (DH) affectionately known as the Fire Chief, Mr. Mhlengi Makhubalo and Executive Manager Operations Mr. Koena Lifty Ngoepe. “Having you in our division is really a great honour indeed, all of us are very excited to work with you in your new endeavor. Welcome aboard buddies,” said the DH.

Police have launched a manhunt for four suspects following a shooting incident in Germiston on Friday, 6 March. Reportedly, a gold Nissan with four occupants approached a BMW at a robot on Webber Street and suddenly multiple shots were allegedly fired from the Nissan to the BMW. Three people were shot, all were declared dead on the scene, they were all males. The three victims were accosted while they were coming from a meeting. Police are investigating three cases of

murder. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has condemned the incident of violence. General Mawela has subsequently urged the investigators of the incident to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the suspects are found and brought to book. Anyone who may have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, is urged to report to the police by calling the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS app.

If you can jump over your wall you are in trouble! If you can get into your premises without any trouble, you are in trouble. That is the message from Fidelity ADT following an incident of theft at a business premises in Roodekop this last week. This rule goes for businesses and homes. Linda Goodenough, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT says the perimeter of your property is probably one of the most important security barriers you need to worry about. “It is an intruder’s first point of access so you need to ensure your perimeter is secure.” Goodenough says in this specific incident, the suspect managed to escape using a stepladder he found on the premises. “It is so important to pack away any tools, ladders, hosepipes which could potentially be used by a suspect,” says

Goodenough. Remember: • If your wall is not that high never leave ladders in your yard which could be used for a quick getaway • If you have trees on your boundary ensure these cannot be used as a “stepladder” to access your property • Put away all garden implements when not in use • In the unfortunate event you are burgled, always report the crime, no matter how small the loss. SAPS and private security companies use this information to work out hotspots and deploy resources Fortunately, the Roodekop thief was apprehended along the street and handed over to Constable Kampa at the Alberton Police Station.

in their two overs. Coetzer ended up on 77 not out, off 54 balls and he struck eight fours and a six . Ackerman made 28 off 12 balls. It was always going to be a massive task for SACS, but they gave it full go and were up with the run-rate for most of the innings. They lost a flurry of wickets in the last few overs, however, and ended up 15 runs short. When Daniel Smith (50) and Kai Curran (46) were at the wicket their chances looked good. They put on 78 for the second wicket, before Smith was run out by a brilliant throw from the boundary and SACS were chasing the game from then on.
