after overcoming challenges Katie-Meg leaves a very special legacy in the heart of her school
Katie-Meg Weinerlein, a pupil from Assumption Convent School in Germiston has proved that to attain a matric sometimes requires raw courage. She started at Assumption Convent in grade one in 2007. Her family remembers clearly how impressed they were that there were wheelchair facilities at the school. Little did they know that they would require these facilities four years later as Katie-Meg would be wheelchairbound owing to Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. This illness came with intense fatigue and nausea as well as many painful joints. For four years she was immobile: her parents had to turn her at night; take her to the toilet; and cut up her food as the joints in her jaw had also been affected. She was unable to write which came with its own set of academic challenges. Her treatment consisted of many medications, including a biologic one which is a form of chemotherapy. Added to this, she required weekly physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. As a result of the illness she missed out on much of her grade five, six and seven years. Katie-Meg recalls the kindness and compassion of her teachers and classmates at Assumption Convent: “One teacher even converted her store room into a room where I could rest.” When asked how she managed to cope, she said that she always tried to focus on what she had rather than on what had been taken from her. Grade eight was a turning point for her when, with the help of a medical team, she started to walk again. Life seemed to be returning to normal and then, in the third term of her grade eight year,
she contracted tuberculosis as a result of her compromised immune system. She was weak and lost a lot of weight. Again she missed out on the last term of school and had to self-study to pass the year-end examinations. Grade nine to eleven were relatively straight forward, even though the doctors’ appointments were still regular and the medication still a daily routine. She
struggled with a slipped disc which also required medical intervention. It seemed that she was heading toward remission and she was achieving excellent results academically despite the fact that she had missed out on basic foundational concepts. She rarely saw her challenges as stumbling blocks and chose to do nine subjects for matric. In her matric year she was elected as deputy head girl; a true indication that she wasn’t going to allow her past to determine her future. However, in May of her matric year,
Katie-Meg collapsed in her bedroom and fractured her skull. The CT scan revealed severe bruising and bleeding on the brain. Her brain functioning in terms of memory and concentration were severely compromised as she had sustained a grade 4 concussion. Once again this was a major setback. At the beginning of August she decided she would not be able to complete matric as she needed the time to allow her brain to recover. She recalls: “The most difficult decision I have ever made was to forego my matric as I would not be matriculating with my classmates, and university would be delayed. The one positive thing,” she continues, “is that I could do matric with my younger sister.” Katie-Meg passed matric with flying colours in 2019. “We warmly congratulate Katie-Meg on her 2019 matric results. She achieved an overall average of 81%; this included 93% for Afrikaans and 88% for English. Katie-Meg epitomises true courage and generosity of spirit. Katie-Meg leaves a very special legacy at Assumption Convent School,” said the Principal of Assumption Convent School, Neville Workman. When asked what her plans are for her future, she replies that she has always wanted to be a doctor. “My path has not always turned out the way I have wanted it to, but I have learnt to trust my journey. Who knows, maybe it will take me longer to achieve my dream, just as matric took a little longer, or maybe my life’s path will take me in another direction,” she smiles. There is no doubt, that whatever the future holds, Katie-Meg has developed the necessary resilience and sheer guts to not only navigate it, but to navigate it successfully and graciously.

brother in Pietermaritzburg for the holidays, where my body went into shock mode because of all the forbidden foods eaten that I normally avoid throughout the year. The usual suspects, fatty meats, breads, fast foods, sweet and salty snacks, tons of sugar (including my favourite whole nut chocolate) were on offer. The holiday was fantastic, but I gained 5kgs during this short period. But years of hard training and nutritional experience have always helped me lose the extra weight gained after every December. The following tips will help you lose the extra weight gained.
Like most people, I normally let my guard down during December, because my diet plan is thrown out of the window. My family and I visited my younger
1)Make small changes too your diet by removing just one or two unhealthy foods weekly, to prevent withdrawal symptoms. 2) Replace the sugar in your coffee and tea with fructose. 3) Drop all sugary drinks, including 100
% juice and increase your water. 4) Replace all red meats with low fat white meats. 5) Replace normal breads with Low Gi health brown bread. 6) Replace all commercial cereals that are high in sugar with oats. 6) Replace unhealthy deserts and sweets with fat free yogurt mixed with fresh fruit, almond or macadamia nuts. 7) Replace all yellow or orange cheese with white fat free cottage cheese. 8) Replace sunflower oil with coconut or olive oil. 9) Abstain from or drink as little alcohol as possible. 10) Eat smaller meals 4- 5 times daily, and rather eat veggies or salad at night instead of starchy carbohydrates. Welkom terug mense.
Ontbyt met die een klomp by Wimpy, middagete by Seafood Shack, Debonairs, of Panarottis met ‘n ander groep, en aandete was gewoonlik of braaivleis, of John Dory’s of weer Wimpy.

Transnet pipeline explosion in Verwoerdpark “Unfortunately the criminal activities are ongoing and thereby increasing the risk to communities living near our pipelines” New years eve started in a turmoil for most Verwoerdpark residents after it was reported that a pipeline explosion occurred in the area during early day. Residents were advised to temporarily evacuate their homes. Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services Management along with other role players worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze for 6 hours. During the process about 40 homes were evacuated in a radius of 1.5 km as a safety precaution. Acting spokesperson of DEMS, Eric Maloka said that the residents were out of danger as the situation was under control at the time. “No one was injured and about 40 houses were evacuated, some of which were not in immediate danger, but it was done as a precaution,” said Maloka. tame TIMES learned that it was a fuel pipeline that was one of Transnet’s 3,800km, high-pressure petroleum pipeline, which runs from Durban to Gauteng. Transnet spokesperson Saret Knoetze said pipelines and associated infrastructure had experienced an unprecedented spate of theft over the past few months. “The attempted theft incident caused a block valve on our Durban to Johannesburg petroleum pipeline, on a section between Alrode and the airport, to spill and cause a fire,” said Knoetze in a statement. Emergency response teams were activated and the blaze was brought
under control. Knoetze said Transnet’s focus was at the moment to contain the spillage and minimise the risk to the nearby community and environment. “This pipeline is part of a section of the Durban to Johannesburg pipeline, which is currently being decommissioned as it was replaced with the new multi-product pipeline. There are no security-of-supply concerns to the Gauteng market area,” added Knoetze. She said various steps had been put in place to address attempted theft along pipelines. Some had yielded positive results, including several arrests and the impounding of numerous fuel tankers. “Unfortunately the criminal activities are ongoing and thereby increasing the risk to communities living near our
pipelines and potentially affecting the security of supply to the inland market area,” concluded Knoetze. tame TIMES spoke to Verwoerdpark resident, Bob Shorts who lives in Jim Fouche road. “At about 6:00 am I heard a loud bang sound like someone who drove into a garage door or gate not realising that it’s
an explosion. I suddenly started seeing smoke and decided to get on my roof to see where it was coming from. That’s when I saw it was close to us. We got notification that we need to evacuate and we did so immediately. We are thankful that emergency services were at the blaze in no time to get everything under control for us to be safe,” said Shorts.

SAHETI’s top pupil bags 8 distinctions while fighting cancer By: Sesona Ngqakamba
While Grade 12 pupils were anxious about writing their preliminary examinations ahead of the finals last year, Antonio Aristides feared for the worst when his health took a turn for the worse. The 19-year-old former SAHETI School pupil was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system while writing prelims. He had to undergo chemotherapy, which continued throughout his finals. But Aristides’ health proved no deterrent as he has been named a commendable achiever by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) after bagging eight distinctions. He is ranked within the top 5% of IEB candidates nationally in more than five subjects and has also been ranked within the top 1% for English, nationally.
Speaking to News24 on Monday, Aristides said, although there were downs, especially towards the end of the year, with the cancer diagnosis, he had vowed he would finish his matric no matter what challenges came his way. He added he could not have done it without the support of his family, friends and SAHETI School, which is situated in Bedfordview, Johannesburg. The top achiever added that time management had played a “huge role” as he prepared for his finals, more than previously. “In matric, you learn to work every day you can. I balanced everything. Whenever I felt well, I tried to put in as much as I could. So that when I was not feeling well, I was able to take a break. “If I went for chemo, I would try to get some hours in [of studying], while sitting there. I was not going to waste that time.” He added he was hoping to pursue studies in engineering, although he was not sure at which institution yet. But first, he wants to ensure that he is good health before making his decision. Aristides said his last chemotherapy session was expected to be on January 17. SAHETI School’s Class of 2019 received 242 distinctions, of which five pupils received distinctions in eight and nine subjects.

Six ways to get back on track after disappointing matric results Matrics from the Class of 2019 who failed, didn’t perform optimally, or didn’t get the results they needed to pursue their chosen field of study should not despair, as there is a range of options available to them to address the situation, education experts say. “Remember that this is not the end of the road, and that although some extra work will be required, you can rectify the situation and still pursue your professional dreams down the line, even
if it is a little later than you had hoped,” says Horace Mpanza, MD of ADvTECH Schools’ Abbotts College High School. “It is better to make the time and effort now, and start from a position of strength a few months or a year down the line, than to resign yourself to forever having results that won’t do you any favours in the job market,” he says. Mpanza says that depending on one’s performance, there are a number of paths to pursue, including to:
REDO MATRIC A Grade 12 student may opt to redo their entire year so that they can improve all of their marks. This is a good option for those learners who did not perform well enough to qualify for studying towards their chosen qualification. “Remember if your marks increase, your admission point score will also increase. If the thought of returning to your old school is too intimidating, look into the option of completing Matric through a registered and accredited private institution, but be sure to select one with a reputation for academic excellence as a result of its commitment to assisting learners with improving their results,” says Mpanza.
course through a tertiary institution. “Be careful to ensure that the bridging course will provide access to your preferred degree down the line, by speaking to a student advisor at the institution,” Mpanza advises. Additional options open to learners, are to complete Matric through distance learning, or pursue a vocational qualification, says Elbie Liebenberg, Managing Director of Oxbridge Academy, which serves more than 20 000 South African distance learning students every year. “No matter what the outcome of your final exams were, there are always options, and sometimes finding the right way forward – for your specific circumstances and aspirations – just requires some research,” she says.
REDO MATRIC + UPGRADE SOME SUBJECTS Grade 12 learners who only need higher marks in some of their subjects do not need to redo all of their subjects. Instead, they can enrol on a part-time basis for 1-6 subjects. “Good institutions will assist learners with making decisions about the best course of action. For instance, they may look at the student’s results and then identify if there isn’t an extra subject that they can redo to increase their overall marks,” says Mpanza. WRITE SUPPLEMENTARY PAPERS LATER IN THE YEAR “This is an option, but one that should be considered carefully,” Mpanza says. “Because you won’t be attending any formal classes to help you overcome the challenges which led to the disappointing results in the first place, you need to be extremely selfdisciplined and focused to make this option work. It can be done, but be sure that you are 100% committed when going this route.” DO A BRIDGING COURSE Another option is to do a bridging
MATRIC THROUGH DISTANCE LEARNING “The benefit of doing Matric subject rewrites or your entire Matric via distance learning, is that it is affordable and can be done from the comfort of your own home. “However, it is imperative that you find a respected, registered and accredited institution, with a reputation for user-friendly and easy to understand learning materials, and excellent tutor support available both telephonically and online,” Liebenberg says. VOCATIONAL TRAINING “A vocational qualification makes you more employable, by providing the specific skills and theoretical knowledge required in fields such as, for instance, office management, childcare, small business management, and hospitality and catering services,” says Liebenberg. “All of the aforementioned qualifications can be completed without having a Matric certificate and via distance learning, which means that you can even start earning while you’re learning.”

A South African Open moment of pure Grace Last November, Branden Grace sat in an airport in America and outlined clearly his goals for 2020. At Randpark Golf Club on Sunday, Grace achieved the first of those goals when he won the South African Open hosted by the City of Joburg. Grace produced one of the finest putting displays of his career to close with a 62 and win his national Open by three shots on 21 under par, and following a stunning duel with defending champion Louis Oosthuizen on Randpark’s Firethorn course. Oosthuizen took second place on 18 under par with a 68 that included a hole-in-one on the par-three eighth hole. England’s Marcus Armitage finished third on 16 under with a 69. Talented 18-year-old Jayden Schaper won the Freddie Tait Cup for finishing as the leading amateur in an incredible sixth place overall on 13 under par with a closing 70.
“I’ve now won everything I want to win in South African golf, and it feels so good,” said a delighted Grace. “This was the one that was missing – the second oldest tournament in the world and with so much history.” Grace’s victory also secured him a place in The Open at Royal St George’s later this year, with Armitage and Jaco Ahlers taking the other two spots that were on offer from this championship to the leading players not yet exempt for the Major. But most importantly, after a period of changes on so many fronts, Grace feels he’s back on track. “You know, my dad had a heart-attack a year back, then we were building a house, I became a father, so there was a lot going on. But I’ve made some changes in management, I’ve got a new caddie and I feel in a really good place at the
moment, and this was the place to kick it off.” Grace was three shots off the lead of Oosthuizen going into the final round. But as Oosthuizen struggled to make anything happen and parred his first seven holes, Grace came out firing early on. After a bogey to start, Grace made three birdies and an eagle in the next five holes. “I needed to come out hot. I knew I needed a low one. I saw the conditions were good for it and the golf course was set up for it. I also knew Louis doesn’t make mistakes out there, so I knew it would be tough. The bogey wasn’t great to start, but when I made birdie on three and eagle on four I knew I was right back in it. And then the blade was just hot. The hole just looked bigger and bigger from there on,” said Grace. Then came a moment of magic from

Oosthuizen. The defending champion aced the par-three eighth hole to take the lead on 17 under par. It didn’t last long though as Grace rolled in a huge birdie putt on the par-four ninth to tie Oosthuizen for the lead. Then he made four straight birdies from the 11th hole to surge away from the field and on to victory. “It makes it special beating a player of Louis’s calibre. It was special for me to finish it off the way I did this year,” Grace said. And Grace can cross off another goal this week. Sitting in that American airport, he also declared, “Maybe one week soon I’ll be able to lift my boy up at the end of a tournament I’ve won, and he’ll be proud of his dad”. On the 18th green on Sunday, young Roger ran on to hug his dad – the South African Open champion.
