INSIDE ALBERTON PSYCHIATRIST SHARES WARNING SIGNS OF VIOLENT CHILDHOOD TENDENCIES
It is your kindness and compassion that we need to change this world. You have the power, you are a world changer
Danica Ehrke, who is currently an honours student at the University of Johannesburg has been tasked with an assignment based on the United Nations seventeen goals of sustainability where she chose to focus on responsible production and consumption in the fashion industry. The Brackenhurst resident created an initiative called The Upcycled Closet
that aims to create awareness about fashion sustainability by educating individuals about the fashion industry and the harmful impact that it has on the environment. “The Upcycled Closet has two main functions; firstly, I have partnered with three talented fashion designers from the following brands; Unwritten Designs, Omari and Zazü to redesign individuals everyday clothing into something new, hot & trendy for future use. If you would like to upcycle your closet please send me an email for more information: theupcycledcloset04@ gmail.com,” said Ehrke. “Secondly to collect individual’s old clothing where some clothing will be handed to homeless people in and around Alberton and the majority of the clothing will be handed to H&M that has an initiative called H&M conscious. The purpose of this initiative is to collect all old clothing and bed linen to reduce the amount of textile waste that lands in landfills. An individual can donate clothing from any brand in any condition to any H&M store worldwide where the clothing will be recycled and repurposed. If you would like to learn more about fashion sustainability please follow my blog: http://theupcycledcloset. home.blog,” said Ehrke. The Upcycled Closet aspires to inspire environmentally conscious individuals to redesign the future of the fashion industry by supporting fashion
sustainability to change the world one clothing item at a time. “I felt as though this change project challenged every aspect of my being. At times it felt as though there was no way, as though I was hitting a dead end. I did not give up, I persevered managing to push past my boundaries, learnt to be comfortable outside of my comfort zone and experienced an immeasurable amount of personal growth,” said Ehrke. “There’s a saying that goes: we are all world changers, however, we always feel as though someone else is better off doing it. I felt like this so many times as I came to realize that changing the world is probably one of the most challenging things to do. I’ve come to realize that we need to step out of our comfort zone and stretch ourselves. This will not only grow and impact your own life but the life of others. We are all world changers, we just need to challenge ourselves enough to bring about the change that this world needs,” she continued. “We are all uniquely different, allowing us to bring about a diversified change to this world. Embrace your knowledge and skills you never know what change you might be able to create. It is your kindness and compassion that we need to change this world. You have the power, you are a world changer,” concluded Ehrke.

Business Forum aims to generate momentum in the local economy
On Wednesday, 10 July tame TIMES was invited to the Alberton&JHB South Business Forum breakfast hosted at Sha-Mani Lodge and Conference Venue along with their business partners to learn more about the state of the business environment in Alberton. Alberton & JHB South Business Forum Committee Members Roula Beukes, Trevor Coleman, Deon Bole, Pieter du Toit, Reg Rehbock, Sean Brown and Greg Brits were hourned to have guests connect with one another. The Business Forum provided local business men and women with opportunity to give presentations of their businesses to the scores of potential
clients present at the breakfast. Organizations such as Stepping Stone, Clutter Bug, ABSA and many more were present to come and introduce their brand and objectives. Lucky draws also took place and people got the opportunity to win awesome prizes. The highlight of the morning was Dr Kobus Neethling, who is one of the top 3 speakers in the world on the topics of creativity and innovation, who gave a wonderful talk on the “The Creativity of Beyonders”. Dr Neethling is a world-renowned scholar and practitioner in the area of creativity thinking and learning. Additionally, he
holds six degrees including two master’s degrees, a doctoral degree and a postdoctoral degree. Dr Neethling is the author of many books and articles as well as award-winning television shows and is also the recipient of numerous accolades and awards for his pioneering work in field of creativity studies. He was, furthermore, asked by the South African transitional government to provide creativity training to the police in order to build better relationships and later was engaged by Nelson Mandela’s chief of staff to provide similar training to Mandela’s staff. Dr Kobus outlined the importance of “The Creativity of Beyonders” and where Beyonders experience life as a daring adventure and prefer roads that are less travelled. They permanently seek variety and are comfortable with creative disorganisation. He further stressed that moving from ordinary to beyond is important in todays business world and that it is about the challenges of performance, whether personal or organisational. The day was a success and tame TIMES thanks the Alberton&JHB South Business Forum for their business partnership.

Elke kort kort begin ek weer lag.

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Alberton resident shares what he will do on Mandela Day:
Many great teachers and philosophers before us have taught that the starting point of all achievement is desire. Your desire must be so strong that you will permit nothing to interfere with its realisation. The preceding sentences resonate with the life of one of the most celebrated icons of our century; Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. As we recognise Mandela Day this year, I urge each one of us to acknowledge the desire he had to see a country, despite its rough past, united in humane spirit. In doing so, become aware of the divine potential you inherently possess to progress the world at large as we realise our individual desires. In honour of that man, a small group of kids and I have decided to take time and plant in our bellies, a burning hot desire to become writers. It will be sixty-seven minutes of writing on any topic of interest by each budding enthusiast. The theme of the day is recognising that the starting point of all achievement is indeed, desire. Mandela Day, to the kids and I teaches us that desire is a great creative energy that must be cultivated, controlled and directed towards a definite end to contribute in moving humanity forward. And that for us will be through becoming successful and positively influential writers. Uiteindelik val hy neer. Ek stap rustig en stadig tot by hom, kyk af en sê:” Kom nou my ou man, wat lê jy so?”. Sjoe, hy was boosaardig kwaad vir my.

Medieval combat tournament battled out at The Art Farm
IT IS A FULL CONTACT COMPETITION USING METAL WEAPONS AND A STANDARDISED LIST OF RULES. tame TIMES visited The Art Farm in Eikenhof on Saturday, 13 July, to experience the National Medieval Combat Tournament in Johannesburg. Visitors had the opportunity to see medieval fans dress up in their finest knight’s attire or maiden’s apron and come through to experience a day of fun and combat action. Participants in the combat tournament came from across South Africa to battle it out in the ring. To beat an opponent in medieval combat, competitors have to strike clean blows on their armour, earning up to five points in each match - one point for every wallop. It is a full contact competition using metal weapons and a standardized list of rules. National teams compete in several standard events, with all being full contact - no stage re-enactment battles are included. The medieval tournament was a forum for European knights where they could practice and show off their military skills in activities such as jousting or the mêlée, indulge in a bit of pageantry, display their chivalrous qualities and win both riches and glory Speaking to owner of The Art Farm, Eugene Becker, tame TIMES learned that this is the 3rd year of the Medieval Combat Tournament. “The first time Medieval started off small but over the years it has become bigger and more exciting. This year we included men and women from around South Africa that is serious about this sport as it is a national fit. We excited to announce that the winning team will go to Spain for the annual Medieval competition to represent South Africa,” said Becker.
During the day different Medieval tournaments took place starting from the morning right through the day. This included: Longsword , Sword and Shield, Pole Arm, Mixed Buhurt, Archery and Gladiator Jousting. In all these tournaments, the dedicated knights battled it out and showcased a lot of passion and energy. Craft shops, Craft Beers, Craft Gin, a Winery and wine tastings made the day a fun-filled experience for all those attending. A big thank you to Eugene and Ilse Becker, Rodney @ Artchery, National Paramedic Services, Battle Heritage and The Art Farm staff for all their hard work in ensuring that the day was a success.

Welcome back to school! Alberton High welcomed back with a message of hope
Assumption Convent School in Germiston shares how their Grade 1’s celebrate their first 100 days of school on 10 July 2019!
Tuesday, 9 July marked the first day back at school for students to kick off the 3rd term. Alberton High School learners were treated with a wonderful message by Pastor Justice and his team on ‘Unity’. He spoke about how society needs to start moving in the same direction to accomplish one vision in our community and country. “It is important to celebrate difference but it is as equally important that we have the same heart and to live for one purpose. The choices we make and the values we pursue shape our identity. We can also shape our identity in God,” said Pastor Justice. Alberton High School wants to take the opportunity to thank Pastor Justice, Clinton and Daniel for the great work they do in the community and the motivational message they provided our learners with at the start of an important term.

Meeting Brain at Archie’s Mega Burgers tame TIMES visited Archie’s Mega Burgers in Alberton to meet the business owner Brian who had a very inspiring story to share. Brian and his wife faced a lot of trails and tribulations and told tame TIMES that their key was perseverance and faith that got them to a new season. tame TIMES will be sharing the full story in next weeks edition.
On Tuesday, 9 July several patients received the gift of sight, following miracle-working surgery performed by renowned cataract specialist, Dr Charl Weitz at the Benoni Eye Institute. The operations were performed as part of their Unclouding Cataracts campaign, which sees the institute, its specialists and other participating organisations doing free cataract removal surgery for over 80 patients in Gauteng. Maryke Lotz, the Eye Institute’s marketing and communication manager says: “For us at the Institute, and the many other people who help make this possible, sight is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving. Year after year, operation after operation, we are humbled by the enormous difference that this relatively small procedure makes in people’s lives.” Lotz points out that the impact of cataracts often extends beyond the trauma of lost sight. “Small children’s motor development is delayed, people lose their jobs as a result of losing their ability to see, and solutions are delayed by a lack of medical aid and/or dwindling funds. The consequences of cataracts are endless, impacting not only the sufferers, but those around them, and that is one of the reasons why each individual story and the challenges behind each operation continue to inspire us onto even greater things.” One of the patients that walked away from the experience with new sight and new hope for the future is Natasha Booysen, 22-year-old UNISA student who faces daily challenges to complete her degree as a result of her poor eye sight caused by the cataracts. Dr Charl Weitz, an ophthalmologist at the Benoni Eye Institute who performed
the day’s surgeries, says to date, the Eye Institute has operated on over 3 000 patients as part of the World Eyesight Project. Unpacking the causes of cataracts Cataracts are formed by the clouding of the normally transparent crystalline lens in the eye, causing blurry vision. Its causes cover a wide spectrum, including: Congenital, including genetic diseases; Inflammation due to eye disease; Intra uterine infection and ocular anomalies; Lifestyle factors such as aging; smoking and diabetes; Toxins such as steroids; Trauma and UV exposure. Lotz has great praise and gratitude for the stakeholders who have been making the cost-free procedures possible. “These surgeries would not be possible if it were not for the generous donations of all involved,” she says. The following people and organisations were party to Tuesday’s successful endeavours: The Benoni Eye Institute who provided all the facilities and the staff who performed no other surgical procedures on the day Dr Charl Weitz who performed the surgeries Anaesthetist Dr AJ Pienaar for his time on Tuesday’s procedures Suppliers included I-Medical Ophthalmic International and Carl Zeiss Last but not least, says Lotz, a special word of thanks goes to King Pie who supplied all the patients and staff with a gift pack. “For us at the Institute, and the many other people who help make this possible, sight is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving. Year after year, operation after operation, we are humbled by the enormous difference that this relatively small procedure makes in people’s lives,” says Lotz. Lotz stated that the Benoni Eye Institute currently has a waiting list of 180 patients that is growing daily. “This may sound like a source of concern, which it is, but above all, it motivates and inspires us and many other stakeholders to try even harder to keep on giving the gift of sight,” she concluded.

Alberton psychiatrist shares warning signs of violent childhood tendancies Violence among children of schoolgoing age is often preceded by certain warning signs in their behavior. If adults are equipped with knowledge they will be able to recognise and address these early indications to avoid more serious incidents and tendencies towards violent behaviour in future. “Recent news reports following a few extreme incidents, such as stabbings and murder, have highlighted the issue
of violent behaviour among children and adolescents, however the majority of violence taking place in schools is in the form of bullying and psychological violence,” says Dr Marshinee Naidoo, a specialist psychiatrist practising at Akeso Alberton psychiatric hospital. According to Dr Naidoo, children as young as pre-school can demonstrate violent behaviour. Parents and other adults who witness the behaviour may become
concerned but often hope that the young child will “outgrow it”. “The complex and troubling issue of violence in childhood needs to be carefully understood by parents, teachers and other adults. Violent behaviour in a child, at any age, always needs to be taken seriously. It should not be dismissed as simply a phase the child is going through,” she says.
EARLY WARNING SIGNS: While warning signs may present differently from one child to another, and not all of these signs may necessarily occur together, it is worth consulting a mental health professional if you notice your child exhibiting these types of behaviours or emotions. Dr Naidoo says that the following behaviours may be early warning signs that a child could go on to develop violent tendencies. - Excessive feelings of isolation and feeling alone - Excessive feelings of rejection - Feelings of being persecuted - Low school interest and poor academic performance
- Expression of violence in writings and drawings - Becoming easily frustrated - Social withdrawal - History of discipline problems - Intolerance for differences
Dr Naidoo points out that it is not uncommon for children to demonstrate some of these behaviours or emotions in isolation as part of normal childhood development, but where these behaviours start to become entrenched it is cause for concern. “The problem is that if such behaviour is not recognised and addressed by parents, teachers and the school, with no interventions provided to children, then it can escalate into violence that could be much more harmful.” Risk factors: Dr Naidoo says there are various factors that may increase the risk of a child developing violent tendencies. “These are always highly complex, however, and the presence of such factors does not necessarily mean that a child is destined to become violent.” “If a child is exposed to violence, they are more likely to become violent themselves. Children who experience or witness violence in their community, physical punishment or domestic violence, and those who have been victims of physical or sexual abuse are more at risk of becoming violent themselves,” she explains. “Even violence in the media, such as movies, TV shows or computer games, could potentially increase the risk of a child exhibiting violent behaviour. There may also be genetic factors that could predispose a child to violence, and certain types of brain damage from head injuries may also play a role in the development of violent
behaviours.”Children who are being bullied, or have become involved with gangs, drugs or alcohol, as well as those facing a combination of stressful family socio-economic factors such as poverty, severe deprivation, marital breakup, single parenting, unemployment, or loss of support from extended family, may also be at greater risk. Signs that danger may be imminent: Imminent warning signs that a child may have a serious violent episode require immediate intervention. “Serious physical fighting with peers or family members, severe destruction of property, or the child displaying severe rage for seemingly minor reasons, are signs that assistance is urgently required. Equally, threats of lethal violence, or a detailed plan to harm or kill others, particularly if the child has a history of aggression or has attempted to carry out threats in the past, should never be ignored,” Dr Naidoo warns. “If it is discovered that a child has self-inflicted injuries, if they threaten suicide, or indicate a preoccupation with suicide or violence, professional help is also needed as soon as possible.” According to Dr Naidoo, both parents and educators have the responsibility to take
- Extreme irritability - Uncontrolled, intense anger - Frequent loss of temper or ‘blow-ups’ - Extreme impulsiveness
action where these signs are noted. “Adults involved in the child’s life have a responsibility to seek assistance from child and family service providers, community mental health professionals, or other appropriate organisations.” “Immediate intervention from parents or caregivers, school authorities, possibly with the involvement of law enforcement officers, is needed when a child has a detailed plan to commit violence or is carrying a weapon. Parents should be informed immediately when students exhibit any threatening behaviour at school or in their communities,” she concluded. Dr Naidoo, Alberton psychiatrist, explains the warning signs of violent childhood tendancies

Relationship-matters? Or is it, relationships matters! It is said that before you open your eyes for the first time in this world, you have already entered a relationship with your parents. From there on, new relationships keep on forming for the rest of your life. The importance of relationships in life is evident. Relationships are the DNA of life - it is central to our nature as humans and to our understanding of interactions with those around us. Although relationships are central to our human nature, we find the phenomenon in our postmodern world that relationships are often reduced to a commodity according to Steve Sacone, in his book Relationship Intelligence. Saccone goes further to say that relationships have a direct correlation with the quality of our lives. When people want to measure the meaningfulness of their lives they not only look at their material possessions, but also at what types of relationships exists in their lives and what is the quality of those relationships. Not only is it true that relationships can be complicated but relationships can also be vulnerable. Relationships can be destructive, but within the right context, relationships can foster growth and joy. Whether you are in a parent-child, sibling-to-sibling, marriage-relationship, work-relationship with colleagues, friendship relationship or even a relationship with fellow community members, we all struggle from time to time with relationships. It is a first, that we will be hosting a Community family conference at NG Alberton-Suid on the 20th of July 2019. With this conference we wish to address some relationship problems that all people face. The aim of the conference is to host it with an intergenerational where people of all ages and life-stages can be equipped and refueled for their relationships in life. The two main sessions titled: Relationships and Communication and Conflict will be hosted by Pastor Edgar Phillips. Please contact the church office for more information or bookings: saakgelastigde@albertonsuid.com or phone 011 869 9700 for bookings.

High speed chase leads to arrest Attempted robbery at
Catbox Hyper
On Tuesday, 9 July, a routine patrol conducted by CPS tatical team was done when they spotted a known suspicious vehicle. The officers contacted Brackendowns SAPS for assistance. The police attempted to pull the silver Volkswagen Polo at Dinamika High School, but the suspects sped off. According to Brackendowns SAPS communications officer, Capt Lindi Moloi, the officers managed to arrest two suspects who left the vehicle and fled on foot. “Unfortunately the rest of the suspects in the vehicle managed to escape. Several stolen items, as well as car break-in implements, were recovered. The suspects are known to be part of a syndicate that has been targeting vehicles around Alberton over the past few weeks,” said Moloi. Congratulations to the CPS tactical team for a job well done, and a big thank you to Constable Riaan Venter and Constable Cendy Molophi for keeping the community safe.
Alberton SAPS pleads with community to assist
On Monday, a incident occurred when an Alberton resident visited a shop on Austell Street in New Redruth with a family member. The victim reported to the Alberton SAPS that he along with his family member was in one of the shops in the area when he was alerted that someone was attempting to steal his car. “He mmediately ran to the car on his arrival he noticed a man in possession of a firearm in his hand and also carrying the goods
taken from his car,” said Alberton SAPS spokesperson Capt Manare Ramotshela The victim shot twice in the direction of the culprit’s drive away car .The culprits escaped the scene with the victim’s money and two firearm magazines and ammunitions. “The police plead to the community to come forward with any information they may have about this incident. Alberton SAPS management wants to see to it that all the criminals in our area are on the official register. There is no room for criminals in Alberton,” added Ramotshela. A case of theft from the motor vehicle has been registered for investigation. No injuries were reported from incident.
On Thursday, 4 July, two suspects entered Catbox Hyper at the Mall at Newmarket. One of the suspects distracted the Store Manager and the other suspect proceeded to the sales counter of the store. The suspect attempted to steal the Store Managers’ cell phone from the sales counter, the Store Manager noticed the suspect behind the counter and confronted the suspect. The suspect dropped the cell phone and made his way to the door, while the second suspect had already made his way out of the store. The Store Manager tried to block the suspect, the suspect however pushed the Store Manager out of the way and ran towards a vehicle, where a third suspect was waiting in the car. Mall at Newmarket’s parking attendants were alerted and the Special Operations Group’s (SOG) security guard at the gate managed to stop the suspects, and ordered them out of the vehicle. All suspects were apprehended.

Suspects posing as interested parents target nursery schools in Edenvale Fidelity ADT is alerting all nursery schools in the Edenvale areas to be aware of two females, one male and two children who are targeting schools pretending to be interested parents. Renee Basson, Community Development Manager Fidelity ADT, says they arrive saying they want to register their child at the school, and while they keep the staff busy the children steal cellphones and other valuables. “If you suspect this is going on, please do not
confront the suspects, but call 10111, as well as your security company. Please do not leave the visiting children unattended. Rather assign a teacher or member of staff to keep them entertained. Lock away handbags and cellphones as well as petty cash boxes. If possible, look for identifying features of the suspects so a full description can be done afterwards and try to get a vehicle registration and description of the car,” she says.
REPORT CRIME TO STOP CRIME A crime stat is only a crime stat once it has been reported to SAPS. “It appears that there are a large number of crimes that simply go unreported because of the nature of the crime or because of a lack of confidence in the system,” says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing & communications Manager, Fidelity ADT. Hattingh says selective reporting of crime is problematic as it contributes to the dissemination of misinformation around crime, rather than accurate and contextualised information which the SAPS and private security companies can then work on to apprehend suspects. “No matter how big or small or how insignificant you feel the crime is - report it!” says Hattingh. Here are seven key reason to report crime: It helps with establishing crime trends and provides authorities with invaluable information on how to best allocate resources. It helps in understanding both motive and modus of the
crime and how crime prevention strategies are being deployed It may alter decisions homeowners make about their personal safety It can influence how homeowners live day to day It helps the community to better understand and respond to safety issues It can lead to more arrests as your crime could be a critical link to another similar crime and could result in an arrest. “A community approach to fighting crime is essential and always pays dividends leading to safer communities. It starts off with a commitment from residents to report crimes accurately and a follow up commitment from SAPS and other influencers in the sector, like the private security industry, to follow up on all leads and react proactively to trends and incidents to reduce crime levels,” concludes Hattingh.
Investigations made by EMPD Community Liaison and Monitoring & Evaluation Unit members have been underway for a while now, centered around a senior clerk at the Bedfordview Licensing Department that fraudulently registered five vehicles belonging to the bank. The suspect registered the cars onto his private name. The total value of the vehicles is over R1.2m. One of the vehicles is a Ford Ranger which has been traced to Zimbabwe, exported without following procedure. It has also emerged that two people have registered different cases at Bedfordview police station against the suspect. “Investigations further revealed that all five vehicle files had important documents missing with two of the illegal registrations made from stolen face value documents,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago. The 28-year-old suspect was arrested and held at Bedfordview police station on charges of fraud. He was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Thursday last week. Investigations in the cases are on-going.

SA’S DARYL IMPEY WINS STAGE 9 OF TOUR DE FRANCE
Alberton Sensei wins bronze at World Championships
By: EWN Reporters
A South African, Daryl Impey, won stage nine of the Tour de France on Sunday leaving local fans to settle for Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe keeping hold of the yellow jersey on Bastille Day. Mitchelton-Scott rider Impey was part of a mass breakaway that quickly opened a 10-minute gap and extended it throughout the race with the pack eventually trailing in 16 minutes adrift. Defending champion Geraint Thomas and the other overall title contenders finished together in a low-key ending after allowing the 14-man break to open up an uncatchable lead on the 170km run. That was a really tough race. I’m so happy to win on July 14,” said Impey. The 2019 Tour Down Under winner and all-rounder won a Tour de France team time-trial back in 2013, and a few days later took the overall lead to become his nation’s first yellow jersey holder. “This is my greatest ever victory, just as good as wearing the yellow jersey, nothing can top this,” he said. “It was a tough, solid day. Impey is a teammate of the British Yates twins, with Adam angling for the overall title this year. “There’s no way I was getting involved in a breakaway today, but I
expected a select bunch sprint,” team leader Adam said. After a frantic day over seven mountains on Saturday, the stage embarked from the Saint-Etienne football stadium in a festive Bastille Day atmosphere with many fans shouting for local man Romain Bardet as well as Alaphilippe. This is a day I’ll never forget,” said the overall leader. “All those people shouting my name, it really is something and my grandfather was there at the finish line, so it was
really special.” The race finished in Bardet’s hometown of Brioude, where the title of the local newspaper ‘La Montagne’ aptly describes the surrounding terrain. The 7,000 locals and the great number of visitors were getting ready to celebrate Sunday night with a Boney M tribute band, while Michelin Guide three-star tourist attraction, the Basilique SaintJulien, was plastered with a massive image of Bardet on its walls for the occasion.
South Africa bids James Small a tearful goodbye
Legendary former Springbok rugby player James Small, died on Wednesday, 10 July at the Life Bedford Gardens Hospital. Following the completion of the autopsy
on Friday afternoon, the cause of death was reported as ‘ischaemic heart disease’. In addition, a police investigation found no suspicious circumstances.
Small will be remembered as a heroic sportsman with a big heart for his family and fans alike. His first match for the ‘Boks was in 1992, which was also the first for the Springboks at the dawn of the new, internationally recognised South Africa following the release of Nelson Mandela and the unbanning of the ANC. He was one of the heroes of the Springbok team that won the 1995 Rugby World Cup and he experienced the transition of rugby from a nominally amateur game to one in which its leading players became wealthy professionals. It was also Small’s fate to be in the vanguard of an era of celebrity sportsmen when events off the field became as much a subject of public curiosity as those between the white lines. On behalf of Alberton businessman Brian Blignaut, his family and the entire tame TIMES team our deepest condolences to James Small’s family during this sad time. James Small’s legacy will live on.
