AfriForum is a non-profit organisation with the main purpose of protecting and promoting the constitutional rights of its members and the communities to which its members belong. We act on behalf of our members in the local community with an established branch in Alberton. The AfriForum branches attempts to plant more than 3000 indigenous trees nationally this year as part of the civil rights organisation’s annual arbour month project. AfriForum annually focuses on both a tree specie that occurs commonly and a scarce tree specie. The common tree for 2019 is the marula (Sclerocarya birrea), while the scarce tree is the apple leaf (Philenoptera violacea). AfriForum’s branch in Alberton hosted a youth leadership with the schools on Saturday, 14 September in our area to plant a tree with the members of the AfriForum branch in Collins Road and Kritzinger Road in Verwoerdpark. The Park on Collins Road and Kritzinger Road Alberton was identified due to the wide open space and not many trees to provide shade for the people that visit that park on a regular basis.

Head Girl Danel Marais and Deputy Head Girl Dane Britz for representing their school on the day and planting a tree. The Joining Hands campaign was an idea of bringing the community together and planting a tree for our future and uniting as a community. A tree was planted in honour of each Branch of Afriforum Alberton to show the community that Afriforum cares and appreciates the community that we reside in: Safety Youth Local government Environmental Affairs Afriforum Community Patroller Afriforum Branch (Henk du Preez as our Chairperson) Arbour month offers the perfect opportunity to make a lasting difference in our communities. We encourage the community to become involved with the project and become part of a progressive and greener future.

“Wat stink so vreeslik?” vra ek.

Former Mrs Africa mentoring girls in Alberton

On Saturday, 31 August The Upper Room Christian Church hosted their Miss Chosen Generation 2019 youth modelling competition in a closing celebration of Women’s Month. Lucinda Pietersen former Mrs Africa 2018 and a beloved Alberton resident agreed to jump on board in April 2019 and offer her services to the church. Lucinda’s main focus has always been to uplift and empower Women and Children. Ray Williams founder of Titulu Arts and Culture approached Lucinda for assistance on behalf of the church and they worked together ever since to ensure the girls were well equipped for the competition. Here’s what Lucinda had to say about her involvement: Working with these girls has been nothing but pure joy. Our youth is faced with so many challenges these days and for me to instill hope, good values and sound confidence within them is a blessing on it’s own. Through Miraculous Jewel Productions I’ve conducted my youth mentoring and development program where I am able to work with so many kids and coach them. Under M.J Academy I provided the girls with modelling coaching and the basic skills required to partake in this competition. Through my mentorship I believe I have sowed a seed within their lives that goes far beyond this competition. Each girl had a unique personality. Some were extremely shy, others lacked self-confidence due to life experiences and challenges, while some were outspoken and over confident. Each girl learnt something valuable that I know will stay with them forever. I think I’ve drilled these words into them “YOU ARE ENOUGH - YOU ARE CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING ANYTHING - YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN PREVENT YOURSELF FROM SUCCEEDING – YOU CAN DO THIS” so many times during this past 5 months that hopefully they hearing it in their sleep. Watching their progress after each session was remarkable. They blossomed and that

was my reward, and it was enough. I am so proud of each one of them. Working with them and seeing their progress didn’t feel fair to award only 3 Winners, I wanted them each to walk away with something as a symbol of remembrance of what they had worked for. So we had the top 3 and 4 Award Winners. As girls we love winning but sometimes it’s not just about the winning but about being apart of the race and what we pick up along the way. The event was a huge success and my heart is sore that I won’t be seeing the girls so often. Nonetheless it was a pleasure working with them and I would just like to congratulate them as well for not only participating but for seeing this through to the end. The competition was judged by Ray Williams, Leandre van Zyl and myself. Top 3 Winners: •Miss Chosen Generation 2019 – Tamron Elviera Goosen •1st Princess – Bulelwa Kole •2nd Princess – Patricia Dellile Mokgati Award Winners: •Ambassador of Confidence - Tamia Ismail •Miss Personality - Casey Smith •Youth Ambassador - Aquella King •Spirit of Courage - Naomi Nagiah I would also like to thank my sponsors for once again supporting me and their generosity in contributing towards the prizes each girls received. •Leandre van Zyl - owner of Smart Spruse •Placecol South Africa - Mall of The South Branch •Suleiman Bismilla - owner of SB Media Worx •Anisa Lawrense - owner of Anisa’s Hair, Nail & Beauty Salon •Elizabeth Greaver - owner of Eldos Arts & Crafts •Lucinda Pietersen - owner of Miraculous Jewel Productions •Belincia George - owner of Ginerly Gorgeous & Author of Unlocking Love

Alberton entrepreneur empowered to serve the community Having faced numerous personal challenges on this journey, one would easily give up hope. Brian and Anna Lazarus, owners of ARCHIES RESTAURANT “THE HOME OF THE MEGA BURGER” believes there is something called the entrepreneural spirit which is the fuel driving him to succeed, besides all the uphill they continued to strive forward. “Taking over the Archies Restaurant with its downhill spiral after the Nigerian couple destroyed the business and it’s name required some serious tenacity and mental adjustment,” said Lazarus. Brian along with his wife Anna get to work and start with prayer each morning. “We have a dedicated team of assistants, Nomsa & Maria who have been with Archies for 22 years, without these 2 gifted people we would really battle to make it a success. Working with these 2 people is a pleasure. We have adopted a family type environment since we spend 80% of our daily time together, creating a happy environment to work in is crucial,” said Lazarus. Lazarus told tame TIMES that in the difficult financial situation South Africa is facing they are faced with a lot of strain on the daily running of the

business. “We do not have the gift of an older brother to fund us so we operate on what comes in daily.. Cashflow is tight & very difficult for us as owners to take salaries home. Hence we need the support of the community at large in & around Alberton to support us. Our dream is to create a social budget where we can give back to the poor & needy. With rising costs on raw materials cresting an even further strain we would appeal to the community to support us so we can supply meals at an even more affordable price to them. One of our goals is to prepare bulk meals of good quality priced around R40-00, this cannot be achieved when just selling a few. We welcome ideas from our customers as to what they would like to see us add to our menu in order to better serve their needs,” concluded Lazarus.

Woman takes on 729km to heal from brutal rape

Owner of Date Night SA, Leilani Kuter (45) from Roodepoort, Gauteng was brutally raped and left for dead when she was only 18 years old. 27 years after this brutal ordeal, this brave woman is taking on a 729km journey to shine a spotlight on survival. Leilani is also speaking out about her ordeal, to create awareness and empower young women affected by sexual assault and gender-based violence. Born to a middle-class family, Leilani was independent from a young age and started working at the age of 15. By the age of 17, she was working at the Department of Finance as an admin clerk and had moved into a room at the NG-church Youth Centre in Vermeulen Street, Pretoria. She had taken the day off work, to run some errands in town and settle into her room. It was a seemingly ordinary day,

the dorms were quiet and mostly empty, so Leilani spent time at the pool before returning to her room. While waiting for her friend, Dewald, to visit she sat on her bed and later heard a knock on the door. It was a man in his late 20s, who introduced himself as “Frankie”. “He explained that the resident living next door to me was his sister and that the family had just lost their grandmother, and he needed me to pass on the sad news. Not thinking much, I let the stranger inside,” Leilani recalls. What followed would change Leilani’s life forever. “In a split second, he was on top of me. I tried to reason with him but he wouldn’t listen. He took his belt off and wrapped it around my neck while he raped me so brutally I lost consciousness. I vaguely remember the pocket knife in my top drawer and weighing up whether or not I should try and reach for it. When he was done, he left me lying naked, bloodied, with a belt wrapped around my neck and my life changed forever. When the police finally arrived they explained it was the sixth rape case reported in the area in just one week. The police were very nonchalant about the rape. Speaking to me, it was as if they were asking me how I liked my eggs done,” says Leilani. Rape is an epidemic in South Africa. According to The Crime Against Women in South Africa Report by Statistics SA, only 1 in every 9 rape cases are reported and of those, only 4% result in prosecution. Unfortunately for Leilani, these statistics

tell her story. Like so many survivors, her case was never solved. Leilani was a young woman trying to find her place in the world and through a traumatic event, was forced to find strength in her vulnerability. She made a conscious decision to survive, to be a victor, not a victim. “I had no choice but to pick myself up and move on. I was alone in a big city, with no one to rely on but myself. When I realized that the act of rape is about power and not sex, I made a conscious decision to regain control over my life and give myself the respect that was stripped from me. It’s been 27 years, but I still make that decision every day,” says Leilani. Crowdfunding on BackaBuddy: Until now, Leilani’s story has in many ways been a private ‘family secret’. In speaking publicly about her ordeal, she hopes to empower other survivors, to speak out and free themselves from the stigma rape carries. On Monday, 16 September, the 27th anniversary of her rape ordeal, Leilani will begin a 27-day journey, totaling 729km, starting in Pretoria and ending with the Ruimsig parkun in Roodepoort on Saturday, 12 October. “I plan to walk 27km a day for 27 days in defiance of systemic violence against women and in celebration of our collective survival. I will be wearing yellow, the colour the perpetrator wore when he attacked my spirit. With my BackaBuddy campaign, I hope to honor young women like Uyinene Mrwetyana,

Jesse Hess, Leighandre Jegels, Lynette Volschenk and Meghan Cremer who lost their lives due to senseless acts of violence. I also want to honor the women whose stories we haven’t heard and the names we don’t know,” says Leilani. With her campaign launched on donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy, Leilani hopes to raise funds to purchase emergency comfort packs @ R200 to be given to young girls when they report sexual assault and go through the process of telling their stories. Additional funds will be used to help as many women as possible who are in need of rehabilitation and counseling. “I think back to the day I reported my rape, the lengthy process of having to recount the most traumatic experience of my life, the invasive medical examination, how cold and impersonal it all felt. With these packs and counseling sessions, I hope to restore some dignity to women and girls who are brave enough to come forward and report their ordeal,” says Leilani The campaign went live on Wednesday, 14 August and has so far raised a total of R 59 278.38 towards the fundraising target of R 100 000.00 with contributions from 39 donors. “I hope my BackaBuddy campaign will encourage as many young women as possible who have been raped or have been victims of sexual assault to speak out and be heard. With a case number you are taking back some of your power from the perpetrator and God willing putting them behind bars,” concludes Leilani.

Brackendowns police need more resources to keep the community safe Statement by: Cllr Malcolm Maifala

The Brackendowns police are struggling to combat crime due to a lack of capacity and resources. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has appealed to the Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Malobane, to urgently change the Brackendowns police station from a temporary to a fully-fledged permanent station. The station serves three sectors in Alberton, which include Brackenhurst, Brackendowns, Mayberry Park, Alrode and Meyersdal. The building that houses the police station was not built for that purpose, but as a bus stop. The offices consist of rented modular structures, which are run down, with considerable damage to

the walls. The SAPS has been renting these premises for more than 20 years, since 1993, and of late the lease has been on a month-to-month basis. Furthermore, the shocking decline of police reservists nationally to 8 908 from 63 592 nine years ago, has negatively impacted the fight against crime in the area. The few officers employed at the station are incapable of dealing with hijackings and housebreakings. This is particularly disturbing when one takes into consideration that genderbased violence is on the rise. The DA calls for community members to be recruited and trained as reservists, to help the police to keep the streets safe.

Stenson seeks more success Alberton Karate Champions in Nedbank Golf Challenge

Henrik Stenson will return to the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player for the first time in three years, when The 2016 Open Champion tees it up in the penultimate Rolex Series event on the 2019 Race to Dubai from November 14 – 17, 2019. The Swede, who lifted the trophy at Gary Player Country Club in 2008, became the first male Major champion from Scandinavia when he triumphed in The 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon three years ago. He recorded a final round 63 in a thrilling battle with Phil Mickelson, which drew comparisons with the legendary ‘Duel in the Sun’ between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977. Stenson’s last appearance in Sun City came in the same year as that famous win, as he went on to top the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex for the second time, after first ascending to the European Number One spot in 2013. As both Sun City and Gary Player Country Club celebrate their 40th anniversary, the 11-time European Tour winner will

aim to claim a second Nedbank Golf Challenge title and his first since the event became part of the European Tour’s international schedule in the 2014 season. The 43 year old has an impressive record in the event, finishing inside the top 10 in each of his last three appearances, including a runner up finish behind Australian Marc Leishman in 2015. Stenson said: “I’ve always enjoyed playing in the Nedbank Golf Challenge and I’m glad that I’m able to get back, especially as Sun City celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. “The last time I played in 2016 it was part of a pretty memorable year for me, and it would be great to mark my return by getting my hands on the trophy again.” Gary Player said: “Our field for the Nedbank Golf Challenge is becoming one of the strongest in golf, and the addition of Henrik Stenson is exciting for our fans. He’s a Major Champion and past winner at Sun City and no doubt seeking a Rolex Series win.
