It is that time of the year again when the Figures Finesse Modelling and Talent Agency hold their annual semi-finals competition for the National Student Model of the Year. With 19 branches nationwide, including Namibia, it is a sought after title by all the competing students who have worked hard all year round to learn new skills and hone their talents on stage. The Alberton Figures branch held their semifinals for this competition at the Roodepoort Youth Theatre on Sunday, 3 November. The students are handpicked by the branch
owner and receive a personal invite to compete. There were various age categories, namely girls 2-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15,16 years and older, teachers, boys 2-12 and 13 years and older. Only nine contestants were chosen by the four independent judges present on the day to qualify as finalists. There was also a special awards ceremony where individuals were recognized for their various contributions to the Figures modelling agency throughout 2019. The top three Debutantes were announced in each age category and each received a special
sash and crown. The Finals for the NSMOTY will take place over the first weekend in December at the Roodepoort Theatre where all 19 branches come together to contest for the prestigious title of being either the best Fashion, Commercial or Skills Model in their age categories. The winners will hold this title for a year and the 2018 winners will award the 2019 winners their crowns and sashes. Good Luck to the Alberton Finalists who will be competing – we believe in you‌

Alberton residents win Mzansi inspired cooking competition A mom-and-son team from Alberton, Thobeka Skhosana and 8-year old Nkosikhona were awarded the first prize in the Mzansi-inspired Salad category in the Spur Secret Tribe Chief Cook competition recently held at Prue Leith Chef’s Academy in Centurion, Pretoria. Working with unique South African flavour combinations, experimenting with different ingredients, measurements and cooking styles, but most of all family fun, the competitors enthusiastically came together to create magic in the kitchen. 15 family teams from across the greater Pretoria came together to create culinary delights and compete against each other to create the best Gourmet Burger and a Mzansi-inspired salad. The teams were made up of a variety of combinations (mother-and-son, mother-and-daughter and father-and-daughter), who went all out to win the top prizes in each category. The event was part of a competition for Spur’s loyal Secret Tribe members – an exclusive club for kids aged 12 years and younger. Each team was given two challenges. First challenge was to create a salad, focusing on freshness, flavour combinations and
a salad dressing with a twist, using Spur Sauces. Butternut, biltong and feta cheese were the favourite ingredients of the competitors. Next up each team had to create their unique version of a Gourmet Burger, working with the famous Spur burger patty and sauces, as well as a variety of
toppings to create the ultimate burger. In each round the teams were judged on their ability to work together, as well as the taste of their food, what toppings they used, how well the flavours worked together and how they plated their food. The ‘Best Burger’ challenge was won by mother-and-daughter team, Anneke Flower and 10-year old Yazzmin, who scored well in the taste category, using a delicious combination of sauces and toppings. Mother-and-daughter team, Funzani Shandukani and 6-year old Pfunzo came a close second. “It was a pleasure hosting our eighth Chief Cook event in Pretoria. All the contestants were so enthusiastic and it was great to see how the teams worked together. Our lives are so busy and this event is an opportunity for families to slow down, spend time in the kitchen making great food from scratch and enjoy each other’s company. It was the first time we challenged contestants to make a salad, creating a delicious balance between the burger and the salad flavours,” says Joe Stead, Creative Director from Spur Steak Ranches. “Thank you also to Spur Sauces, Rhodes, Freddy Hirsch, KinderJoy, Plush and SunPick who partnered with us to bring families together in the kitchen.”
Doen ek genoeg?

Brackenhurst resident Bianca Ackhurst (24) is still carrying on strong and continues to recover from Guillain-Barré Disease, a rare autoimmune disorder that left her paralyzed on 3 July 2018. Bianca Ackhurst was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of an Alberton hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms and “tingling” in her fingers and toes. Ackhurst was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, an extremely rare and serious autoimmune disorder which attacks healthy nerve cells in the peripheral nervous system. The incurable syndrome affects 1 in 100,000 individuals, while there is no known cure, doctors say the severity of the symptoms can be reduced through extensive physiotherapy and special treatment. The 24 year-old did not allow the disease to define her or stop her from reaching recovery and happiness. tame TIMES is happy to announce that she is not only recovering but that she got engaged to her love Rhys Seymour who stood and supported her through the fight of recovery. tame TIMES wishes you all the happiness and love as you both start a wonderful journey and as you build your new lives together.

MARTIN DE WEES HEALTH CORNER
You are what you eat Tasty food is one of life’s pleasures and is enjoyed by people from all walks of life. There are health implications when eating foods that are high in fats, such as red meat and dairy products, including processed foods. Our insatiable appetite for products containing sugar also adds fuel to the fire. Unlike like our ancestors who sought their sugars from fruits and sweet vegetables, modern foods are high in sugar and nutritionally valueless. People add far too much sodium to their foods while cooking. Excessive sodium raises blood pressure and has multiple other pathological effects. Ditch all processed foods that contain sodium and replace your salt cellar with alternative salts that are high in potassium. There has been a massive increase in cardiovascular diseases, adult-onset diabetes, liver and kidney disease, Alzheimers disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer and obesity in our country over the past few decades. The increase in deposable income amongst the middle class and the large variety of foods on offer is also
contributing factor. Empower yourself by learning to read food labels and making healthier choices when shopping. Exercising 3-4 days weekly, learning to manage stress, avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, over the counter and recreational drugs is key to a healthier lifestyle. experience in things pertaining to and of the Holy Spirit. Tommy triumphs in “Africa’s Major”
Tommy Fleetwood waited 22 months for a win, and when it came it was big. The Englishman won the richest firstplace cheque on the European Tour this week of US$2.5 million with his playoff victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player at the Gary Player Country Club on Sunday. He did so with a final round of 65 including three eagles, and then beat Sweden’s Marcus Kinhult on the first extra hole of a playoff after both finished tied for the lead on 12 under par. “Obviously I guess being a golfer these
days, you have a chance at a young age to set your family up for life,” he said of the prize money. But the victory was worth a whole lot more to him. “I’m just very proud of that, really, and everybody that goes on the journey with you constantly. It’s just really, really cool when you win a tournament. It really is.” Fleetwood started the final round six shots back of the leader, South Africa’s Zander Lombard. Louis Oosthuizen was also in the hunt at only one shot off the lead at the start of the final round. But as both the South Africans faltered –

with Oosthuizen finishing tied sixth and Lombard tied eighth – that opened the door for Fleetwood and Kinhult. Fleetwood’s three eagles at holes nine, 10 and 14 took him through the field. And it was his third eagle on the par-five 14th that was indeed the #StrokeofGenius this tournament recognizes as he hit a three wood into the narrow green and to within 10 feet of the hole. Kinhult pushed his way to the fore with a 68 that started with three straight birdies. And with Fleetwood in the clubhouse on 12 under, the Swede held his nerve and holed a par putt on 18 to force the playoff. But playing the 18th again, it was Fleetwood’s par to Kinhult’s bogey that decided the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge. “You stand over those putts, you never know what’s going to happen. You just have to stand up and hit them,” Fleetwood said of his winning putt. It was Fleetwood’s second victory on the Rolex Series, and one that lifted him into second place on the Race to Dubai rankings going into the season finale, the DP World Tour Championship next week and where he’ll attempt to be crowned the European Tour’s number one for the second time in his career. “It’s an absolute privilege to get to the last event with a chance of winning The Race to Dubai. It’s an amazing thing to have in your career and it’s one of the things I’m most proud of.”
