Lizz Meiring will be part of hosting the #WomenCan event South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. Women have come a long way since then and legislation and our culture have evolved to provide for equal opportunities between sexes. tame TIMES Community Newspaper, GBS Digital, Taxi Times, ABSA bank, Coleman Properties and Alberton&Johannesburg South Business Forum would like to keep this movement alive with their first Annual #WomenCan event which is
meant to inspire and empower women in business. “Women can achieve anything,” says Editor of tame TIMES, Garin Joemath. We also proudly announce that Lizz Meiring will be part of hosting the event. Lizz is a South African actress, screenwriter, playwright, producer, director and performance director known for her extensive body of work in television, film and theatre. #WomenCan is a networking event for women which aims to support and inspire the attendees. After the event workshops will be presented that will assist the attendees in building sustainable businesses by gaining the necessary skills. We reached out to a couple of successful women in Alberton who were lyrical about the potential that lie within all women and urged all the strong females to start believing in themselves this Women’s Month.

Mense is belangrik!
Steve Saccone skryf hieroor: “God will continue to push humanity towards the transformation of our relational worlds, toward expanding our capacity to internalize His love so that we can externalize it to others”.
emosionele, sosiale, maatskaplike, etniese, kleur, intellektuele of selfs politieke grense is. ‘n Persoon is ‘n persoon deur persone, of, “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”is ‘n Afrika spreekwoord. Sommige Amerikaners verstaan dit egter ook so as ek na Leonard Sweet luister wat sê: “By yourself you are nothing: in relationship, you are everything”. Ds Natalia Strydom. Leraar van NG Alberton-Suid.
Die laaste paar weke was ek so vies vir Gysie. Ek lag toe nog by myself oor die lui man van
Zelda van Coller Optometrists celebrated the week leading up to Women’s Day with balloons full of surprises and gave women the chance to win various gifts. Balloon vouchers included chocolates, GUESS shopping bags, Polaroid t-shirts, hot chocolate sticks and finally, one lucky winner walked away with a pair of Polaroid sunglasses. All women who entered the practice during the week leading up to 9 August had the chance to pop a balloon to stand a chance to win. “We believe that women should be celebrated. What the world need is women who are strong, kind, loving and brave.” Congratulations to Elena Sewraj who won the Polaroid sunglasses in our lucky draw in celebration of Women’s Day.

my toe die spreekkamer my bel. Mense, ek skrik my sommer bleek. Mense, toe my kinders daar instorm bars ek in trane uit.

When his wife died the business suffered and Mr Ball had to sell. He sold it to a lady but in the process she became sick could not continue with business,” said Brian. Brian further stressed that Nigerian people ran the business but they messed up the business terribly. “People didn’t even want to pass the shop due to the strong odour that the shop had. They sold chicken feet with nails - in a glass window displayed and due to customer base and certain established business to drive an agenda opposite to that, they killed the business,” explained Brian. Don’t let fear of failure ruin your focus
Many of South Africa’s Matric learners are approaching their looming final examinations filled with dread and anxiety, in anticipation that they won’t do very well or, even worse, fail the most important assessment in their academic life so far. Unfortunately, this fear alone can cause them to lose focus when they can least afford it, an education expert says “This fear of failure is often based on the incorrect perception that a weak performance in your Matric final exams means the end of the road for your dreams and aspirations, and any chance you had of studying or finding work in the future,” says Lovemore Masunda, Senior Student Advisor at Oxbridge Academy.
“However, that perception is not based on reality, because the fact is that there are many options available to learners who aren’t successful the first time,” he says. Masunda says that it is important that these learners understand two things: firstly, that there are different paths to success and, secondly, that they still have enough time left to make a focused effort before the exams, which will further improve their prospects, even in the worst case scenario. “Make no mistake; we are not advising learners to slack now. We urge them to do their utmost best. What we are saying, is that if you are so consumed with fear and anxiety that you aren’t able to give your preparation your best effort, you can now put those worries out of your mind. Doing so
will allow you to focus and regain a sense of control over your work. “This can mean the difference between having to redo Matric completely or only having to rewrite some subjects. Or it could mean the difference between rewriting several subjects as opposed to only one or two. At the end of the day, you should throw everything behind preparing as best as possible now, rather than feeling helpless and hopeless over what you may think is a done deal in terms of your results.” Masunda says deciding on a remedial route after receiving the results is best done by approaching a student advisor at a high-quality institution. Since there are so many options, it is best to speak to an expert to determine what is best for each individual. These include, but are not limited to, the following: REDOING MATRIC In the unfortunate event that you fail, or don’t get Matric exemption, you can complete your Matric via distance learning. This option is affordable, can be done in the comfort of your own home (which means that you don’t need to return to school), and learning materials are user-friendly and easy to understand. On top of that, good institutions will have excellent tutor support available both telephonically and online. REWRITING SPECIFIC SUBJECTS Another option is to only rewrite those subjects you failed, or those in which you would like to achieve better marks. That is
why ensuring that you do as well as possible now will pay off later. COMPLETE A BRIDGING COURSE OR EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATION An Intro to N4 course is like a bridging course, as it allows you to progress to N4, N5 and N6. After completing N6, you can apply to the Department of Higher Education and Training for a National Diploma, provided that you have gained 18 months of relevant practical experience. Passing an N4 level qualification is comparable to Matric, and persevering through N4 to N5 will make you more employable than someone who only has a Matric certificate. ENROL FOR A VOCATIONAL COURSE A vocational course provides the specific skills and theoretical knowledge required in fields such as, for instance, project management, health and safety, logistics and supply chain management, and contact centre operations. All of these courses can be completed without having a Matric certificate and via distance learning, which means that you can even start earning while you’re learning. “It goes without saying that having a Matric certificate is better than not having one, and that your aim should be to earn your National Senior Certificate (NSC) with the best results you are able to achieve. However, for thousands upon thousands of learners, the reality is that they may not perform as well as they hoped to at the end of the year,” says Masunda.

Two shebeen owners arrested for selling alcohol without a license Primrose police arrested two suspects, aged 23 and 43 respectively, on a charge of selling liquor without a license during an operation in the Makause informal settlement, recently. During the operation officers entered the informal settlement on foot and visited two different establishments. “At each, they entered, found the owner, introduced themselves as police officers and asked for the owner’s liquor license,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications
officer for the Primrose police. “When the owners could not provide this they were arrested. “It is hoped the operation will help to curb the illegal sale of alcohol, loud music and crimes we believe are related to alcohol abuse, such as assault, domestic violence and rape.” The suspects were detained at the Primrose Police Station following their arrests, and were later released on a warning after paying admission of guilt fines.

Alleged drug dealer arrested in Alberton On Tuesday, 13 August at around 17h00, the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) members seized drugs from a male suspect in the Alberton area. The 38-year-old suspicious pedestrian, who became uneasy when patrolling officers approached him, was arrested in Radio Road at the Alberton North informal settlement after he was stopped and searched. DEU members uncovered fifteen (15) green knotted plastics containing a drug with an estimated street value of R1,000. The suspect was immediately handcuffed and detained at Alberton police station. The suspect was charged with possession and dealing in narcotics and is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
Man brutally assaults girlfriend over a cellphone A 34-year-old man was arrested by the Primrose police, last Thursday, on a charge of domestic violence. The arrest was made after a Makause informal settlement woman opened a case against the accused. “She alleged that the suspect, her boyfriend, accused her of stealing his cellphone and chased after her,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. “He allegedly assaulted her until blood came out of her eye.” The victim had to seek medical attention after the attack. The man was arrested and has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.

When I think of South Africa, three things flash across my mind. Nelson Mandela, Table Mountain and a double cab bakkie; the last listed being the birth right to our nation’s residents, a South African staple on our asphalt, the admission ticket to brag around a braai… you get the picture. With many options available, what do you take when the budget is tight but the dream is big? Here are 3 entry level offerings from what I consider to be South African favourites: The first to pull up to the glowing griddle is the Ford Ranger, with the entry level being a Hi-Rider XL 2.2TDCi, offering 118Kws and 375 Nm of torque from the turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel engine. With some basic features on offer such as Bluetooth connectivity, day time running LED’s and…. and that is about it. From a safety perspective, provided you keep it up right on its 16 inch steel rims, the whole 2 airbags will not be needed. The Ranger will get your foot in the door at R413 500.00 Next up, the Ford’s nemesis: the Toyota Hilux. The entry level being the 2.7 double Cab S, I frowned a little knowing that the entry level was a naturally aspirated petrol engine; my apologies to Jeremy Clarkson for being disappointed that a vehicle was not a Diesel. Despite the 122Kw output, the torque on hand comes in at 245 Nm’s. A part from the multi-function steering wheel, the only element to look forward to is a price tag of R401 400.00 The next suggested budget bakkie was actually the inspiration behind this
article. After a recent drive in the Nissan Navara, I was left with a stale taste in my mouth; “it feels cheap”. My experience aside, the 2.3 litre turbo diesel has the more impressive figures to offer, 140 Kw at 450 Nm of torque, and a worthy 6.3 litre / 100km fuel consumption. The Navara definitely is a more refined vehicle in terms of finished look; which is to be expected as it does cost R489 700.00 I patiently wait to conclude… whilst holding a spanner in my hand. Throw brand consciousness aside and turn an eye to the Chinese. I had a look at the top of the range GWM Steed 6; a 2 litre turbo diesel double cab with every bell and whistle you can think of, leather trim from top to bottom, and enough performance to play in the tall grass with the old boys. All this for R314 900.00… it makes you wonder if an entry level brand would be worth it when you can have everything for so much less. So plot and plan on how to work your new vehicle choice into conversation among your friends… Nou gaan ons braai!

Below par Boks grind out Pumas win in Farewell Test
By: Sports24 reporter
Sibusiso Nkosi scored two brilliant tries as South Africa beat Argentina 24-18 on Saturday in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match in Pretoria. The winger struck in each half for the Springboks, who found the going much tougher than last weekend when they hammered the Pumas by 33 points in Salta to win the Rugby Championship. South Africa have an embarrassment of riches on the right wing with Nkosi and Cheslin Kolbe, who was rested for this match, bidding to start against New Zealand in Japan on September 21 in their World Cup opener. All the other South African points at Loftus Versfeld came from fly-half Elton Jantjies, who kicked a conversion and four penalties. Forwards Guido Petti and skipper Pablo Matera each scored a try for Argentina. Joaquin Diaz Bonilla kicked a conversion and a penalty and Benjamin Urdapilleta a penalty. South Africa skipper and flanker Siya Kolisi showed no ill effects from a knee injury sustained last May before coming off after 53 minutes of his first international appearance this season. Coach Rassie Erasmus wanted Kolisi to concentrate on his personal performance so he did not restore the captaincy. Instead veteran hooker Schalk Brits became, at 38 the second oldest Springbok to lead the team. Although Argentina suffered a ninth consecutive loss, there was encouragement for coach Mario Ledesma from a much improved scrummaging
performance, that won several penalties. The Pumas thought they had taken the lead with three minutes left when debutant Lucas Mensa touched down, but the try was disallowed for obstruction by fellow centre Jeronimo de la Fuente. South Africa started with an entirely different team from the one that crushed Argentina 46-13 last weekend in Salta to win the Rugby Championship for the first time. Argentina made 10 changes after being humiliated at home. Springboks flanker Marcell Coetzee was off on 17 minutes and could not return after failing a head injury assessment test. South Africa dominated territory and possession, but had to wait 20 minutes before being rewarded when Jantjies kicked a 22-metre penalty from in front of the posts. Argentina had their first scoring chance seven minutes later. Diaz Bonilla succeeded with a more difficult penalty kick than that of Jantjies. A stop-start half was crying out for a try. It finally arrived on 32 minutes when slick handling allowed Nkosi to step inside one opponent before holding off two others to score. Jantjies struck a post with his conversion attempt leaving South Africa with an 8-3 advantage that did not adequately reflect their superiority. That lead evaporated in additional time at the end of the half when Petti intercepted a pass from scrum-half Cobus Reinach and, showing amazing pace for a lock, scored between the posts. Bonilla converted and the Pumas led 10-8

at the break despite being on the back foot for much of the opening 40 minutes. The highlight of the second half was the second Nkosi try on 48 minutes, which gave the Springboks a lead they never
surrendered. Seemingly hemmed in, he beat three Pumas and then dived over Sebastian Cancelliere to raise his Test try tally to seven since debuting last season.
