Kinder College welcomes EDITOR new principal Sulene Bester A NOTE FROM THE
It’s that time of the year when parents see their children go back to school and for some parents school started for the very first time. tame TIMES visited schools in and around the area and it was fun to spend time with Grade 1s in their classes and seeing them getting ready to be educated. It is always an emotional situation for parents to see their child start Grade 1 but remember that your child’s education is the primary aspect that shapes their future. tame TIMES also wants to remind all parents that a teacher should have the best idea of whether your child can meet social and academic expectations. Listen to the advice given by them as they have been trained in early childhood development.
We would like to introduce and welcome our new principal Sulene Bester. Good luck for the very important role you will play at Kinder College. We look forward to seeing what new and exciting things you have planned for the school. “I am extremely excited to become a part of the Kinder College family. I believe that my knowledge and experiences can contribute to make a difference and help the school to grow. I know change is not always easy, but without change – growth can’t happen. Being a mother of two boys, I truly only have
the children’s best interests at heart. I’m looking forward to this new and exciting chapter,” said Bester. Teacher Rene Jonker has also been promoted to Deputy Principal and two news teachers have joined the team, Natasha Loubser and Therine Botha. We at Kinder College would like to welcome all our new parents as well as the “oldies” back. May 2020 be a blessed year for our school as well as for you and your families. We are looking forward to a very exciting year. tame TIMES wishes Sulene Bester and Kinder College all the best for 2020.

Ek en Gysie het Saterdagaand heerlik saam met ou vriende van ons gekuier. Ons het vroegmiddag begin met braaivleis en slaaie, en heerlike wyn. Teen 20:00 was ons weer honger. Ek spook om my oë oop
te hou, en Gysie kry skaars sy gape weggesteek. Uiteindelik sluit hy af en begin die gebed. Ek maak my oë toe en amper onmiddelik dwaal my gedagtes. Ek het net lekker ingesluimer toe skree jy my wakker.” Tip- As jy laat kuier, moet jy laat slaap. Moegheid is gevaarlik.

Why data siloes are detrimental to excellent customer experiences With more and more of our world becoming digitally dominated, always-on and always connected, consumers literally have a world of choice when it comes to obtaining the products and services they need. Pricing is no longer a real point of differentiation, and the ability to deliver an excellent Customer Experience (CX) is more important than ever. This in turn relies on a real and in-depth understanding of the customer and that disparate siloes of data are the enemy. If a business cannot access, analyse and understand all aspects of their customers, they will never be able to deliver the experience that today’s consumers demand. Even in South Africa, there is little doubt that consumer access to technology has had a huge impact on business. Consumers expect to have access to information, products and support at any time and they demand seamless engagements across multiple channels. Much of the country’s online access has been enabled by mobility, and the ability to engage effectively through both mobile and web-based channels,
as well as traditional bricks and mortar stores, is critical. Businesses now need to be able to deliver the personal touch of human interaction and the convenience of digital across any of their touch points. Essentially the lines are blurring between different channels. However, siloed data makes this impossible to achieve with any useful effect. For example, a financial institution may have multiple different views of the same customer resulting from uptake of different products from different business units. The same customer may have a savings account, an investment, a credit card and a home loan. They may have gotten married at some point and changed their name; they may have had children and their needs may have altered. They may even have opened accounts for their children, and their spouse may be utilising the same financial institution. If the bank cannot bring this data together to create a single view of the customer, they will never be able to deliver the seamless, integrated experience needed. In order to address this challenge, it is essential for product, pricing and customer information to either be
Parktown Boys’ High School releases statement following death of pupil at orientation camp Continued from Page One In a statement posted in the school’s Facebook Page, the school said the camp was aimed at introducing the new Parktonians to one another and creating an environment that focused on teamwork and achieving of common goals through various activities. The statement reads as follows: The Parktown Boys’ High School Grade 8 Orientation Camp took place at Nyathi Bush and River Break in the North West Province. The Grade 8 group arrived at camp on Wednesday the 15th of January. The camp is aimed at introducing new Parktonians to each other and creating an environment which focuses on team work and the achieving of common goals through various activities offered at the camp. The school’s Headboy, Deputy Headboy and SEC members along with 7 staff members were also present on the camp along with the Headmaster, Malcolm Williams and a Senior Child Development and Protection Consultant, Luke Lamprecht. In the afternoon the boys were involved in a water activity that was supervised by trained camp facilitators. After the activity there was a hike and supper, followed by a sleep out in the veld. Late on Thursday morning, it became apparent that a boy had gone missing from the camp. Internal emergency procedures were immediately instituted by camp management, staff and members of the community. The Headmaster contacted the father to alert him to staff concerns. At 15h20 the Headmaster again contacted the father to confirm that all efforts to locate Enock had failed and shortly thereafter transport was
arranged to take the family to the venue. Two trained counsellors from the school accompanied the family. By this time the SAPS Emergency Services had already been called, including the Search and Rescue unit who at the point assumed control of the search. On Thursday evening the decision was made to curtail all camp activities for the Friday and return the boys to school following breakfast and a briefing by the Headmaster and the Senior Child Development and Protection Consultant. At 11h00 on Friday the school was informed of the tragic news that the body of Enock Mpianzi had been found by SAPS Search and Rescue personnel. The Staff, Learners, SGB, and the Parktonian Alumni express their deepest sympathy to the Mpianzi family following this tragic loss. The school community remains in a state of shock and counselling support has been implemented. The Alumni of the school have committed to support the family where possible. Further details will be communicated once more information becomes available.
centrally housed and distributed or carefully managed and integrated across platforms. Moreover, Master Data Management (MDM) has become a critical technology in ensuring organisations can deliver a consistent customer experience. Organisations need to ensure that all of their information is correct and consistent and that all channels work all the time, which requires quality assurance and automated testing. Staple tools such as data analytics remain essential, but they need to be applied consistently across integrated and clean data to deliver the insight required for demand forecasting, focused marketing, personalised promotions and so on. Fortunately, technology developments are making strides in achieving this. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being utilised to bridge the gap in the customer experience between human and machine. The traditional digital engagement has tended to become “one size fits all”, with standard product information and FAQ’s that customers are expected to navigate. It is lacking the human element needed and often
frustrates customers, so AI can be used to provide guidance and advice based on their understanding of the customer. Other technologies such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA) are increasingly being used by organisations to execute basic process, thus freeing up employees and allowing them to focus on customer engagements where a human touch is required. The customer is king and always will be, and even in the age of technology the same principles of marketing apply. Businesses need to make it easy for customers to engage with them no matter which channel they choose and enhancing the customer relationship and providing additional value is key to retaining existing customers. It remains crucial to understand your customer and provide them with the services, products and solutions they require in the manner they wish to obtain them. Delivering the experiences today’s customer demands requires intelligent application of technology to align customer engagement and provide a seamless experience across all channels and points of contact.

Performing arts set to take centre stage at Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale
In addition to an exciting battle between athletics giants from the North versus those in the South, the Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale will also boast spectacular live performances by five award-winning school’s performing arts groups. The exciting entertainment lineup will include performances by the Jeppe Pipe Band, Menlo Choir, Pretoria Boys High
Pipe Band, Helpmekaar Kollege Modern Band (under the well-known composer, arranger, orchestrator and producer Peter Mclea) and the Prestige College Marimbas. The Menlo Choir is a lively and energetic choir with 120 choir members between the ages of 13 and 18. The choir members all take part in various activities, but enjoy making music and singing together. “We have participated in four World Choir Games all over the world and will be travelling to Belgium later in the year to take part in this year’s World Choir Games,” says Jeanmari van Papendorp, Menlo Choir Conductor and High School Menlopark Head of Department for Music. “The choir, as with all the other activities, is encouraged to take part in the most challenging of competitions. Its list of excellent achievements is quite astounding and include gold medals at the World Choir Games. They also achieved top honours at the national ATKV choir competition in 2019 and were awarded best mixed choir at the Pretoria Eisteddfod. It is an honour to be able to sing the national anthem at the Twizza School Series Grand Finale. We are sure that the audience and the athletes will enjoy the choir’s energy. The choir loves to sing just as the athletes love to take part in athletics. It actually is an amazing
combination! Please join our choir and bless this beautiful country with the words, Nkosi Sikeleli Afrika.” The Prestige College Marimbas have entertained the country for over 20 years. “The band has 11 members that are 16 and/or 17 years old,” says Zelia Maree, Prestige College Head of Department for Arts and Culture. “Our most impressive achievements include winning in two sections at the South African Championships for Creative Arts in 2019. Being the South African winners for Contemporary Music, we hope to get the finance needed to go to Hollywood to participate in the World Championships this year. We are also the National Eisteddfod winner for contemporary music and came first in the most entertaining group category. We also walked off with the title for best band at the Pretoria Eisteddfod. Awards follow this group, wherever they go.” “It is an honour to be chosen to be a part of one of the biggest sporting events in South Africa,” continues Maree. “The Twizza Super School Series has united children from so many schools and backgrounds. This is a great achievement. The audience can expect to be wowed by our high level of performance and energy. Our music is proudly South African.” Started in 1943, the Jeppe Pipe Band is the
oldest school pipe band in the country. “We have 35 members that range from 10 to 18 years of age,” says Ross Olive, MIC Jeppe Pipe Band. “Impressive achievements include being the second ever pipe band in the world to play at the world-renowned Basel Tattoo, an annual military tattoo show performed by international military bands, display teams, popular musicians, and tattoo formations in Basel, Switzerland. It is an honor to be selected to perform at the Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale. The band loves to get involved in local events. Spectators will have the chance to witness some traditional Scottish Pipe Band music performed by a team of extremely dedicated young boys and girls.” “We are excited to include a cultural element as part of the line-up at the Grand Finale,” says Lance Coertzen, Twizza Group Marketing Manager. “South Africa boasts immense talent at school level not only in education and sport, but also in the field of arts and culture. We are proud to compliment the track and field highlights with live performances by these award-winning bands and choir. The performances are guaranteed to add to the special moments that will be experienced on the day. #TasteTheMoment with Twizza.”

Playoff glory for Fichardt at Eye of Africa PGA Championship Darren Fichardt added his name to the rich history of South African golf when he won the prestigious Eye of Africa PGA Championship on Sunday, and on a day when the Sunshine Tour itself made history with its coverage of the country’s second oldest professional golf tournament. Fichardt beat Chile’s Matias Calderon with a birdie on the third playoff hole after both finished regulation play tied for the lead on 20-under par at the Eye of Africa Signature Golf Estate. “I have always wanted to win the Eye of Africa PGA Championship, and the way I won it was very special. To win in a playoff is always awesome, and then hitting a driver and five iron and making a good putt for birdie was very satisfying,” said Fichardt. Fichardt now owns a place on a trophy that includes some of the biggest names in South African golf. And the Sunshine Tour made its own bit of history at it live streamed the final round for the first time, with even Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok Schalk Brits declaring on social media he was watching the final round on his laptop while in the FNB Stadium watching the rugby action at Vodacom Super Hero Sunday.

Fichardt went into the final round tied for the lead with Jacques Kruyswijk on 16-under, and Calderon four shots adrift of them. But Calderon came surging through the field with a 64, and Fichardt’s own 68 saw the title decided between these two. Kruyswijk took third place on 19-under par with a 69. The victory was a timely boost for Fichardt, who admits the tribulations of having to return to the European Tour Qualifying School last year after losing
his card took it out of him. “I had a tough year last year and decided not to touch a club over December. I came out at the South African Open and was a bit rusty, and missed the cut by one. I was thinking I hope it’s not going to be one of those years again. So to win the week after is awesome. “It’s fantastic playing at home and having that support. It can get very lonely on tour and it’s great to hear people calling your name and supporting you.”
