tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet the new owner of Mr King Butchery, Danie Strydom who is excited to offer the community great value meat for market beating prices in our Alberton community. Mr King Butchery has been operating on the premises in 51 Van Riebeeck Ave, Alberton North since 1969, and Danie Strydom is currently the 4th owner at the store in Alberton North. Danie Strydom worked for ABSA for 26 years but decided to make his passion his living by taking over the well-known butchery. “The previous owner made me an offer to purchase the butchery. Although I
was hesitant at first, I decided to step out in faith and I took over the business in April 2019. I believe we are currently the cheapest butchery in Alberton,” said Strydom. They claim to have the best cheese wors in SA which was made famous by the previous owner that retired. “People from Germiston, Heidelberg, Rustenburg and Sasolburg visit our butcher to come and buy their monthly stock. We offer meat packs and mostly specialize in chicken, beef and pork,” added Strydom. Strydom claims that they have a huge local customer base and they are in the process of expanding thier customer

Speeding and traffic issues in McBride Street
By: Cllr Malcolm Maifala
Alberton resident shares her opinion on interracial dating
Cllr Malcolm Maifala is determined to see through the challenges faced by residents living along McBride and Geranium Streets respectively; especially the concerns around the issue of speeding along McBride Street in Brackenhurst. “Following a street meeting I had with residents of Geranium Street on 22 October, I arranged a site visit with City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) officials to attend to the number of issues the residents raised, said Maifala. Among these issues was the interference residents experience with parents picking up their children. Residents complained that the people picking up children from the school usually park
by their driveways and they obstruct traffic. Another recurring issue raised was that of the speed at which cars travel on along McBride Street, especially the bend close to the school in the area. “I welcomed the input from the school representatives in attempting to resolve the traffic inconvenience caused by parents and those offering school transport in the afternoons. According to the school, they are putting plans in place to accommodate a pick up and drop off area within the school’s premises, added Maifala. Furthermore, EMPD was requested to be present during rush hour to monitor the situation.
In the day and age that we are currently living in interracial relationships have become more common. Love flourishes between blacks and coloureds, coloureds and whites or whites and blacks. Interracial relationships are something so beautiful to experience. It takes a multitude of different races and creeds to come together to become one nation. An interracial relationship binds together different norms, values, traditions and cultures. To experience this type of relationship can be such and amazing experience. It gives you as an individual the platform to connect with different traditions and cultures, on a level you never thought could ever be possible. In the century we are living in, although interracial relationships have become so common amongst our people, there will always be the people that will never accept this change. These people will never accept happiness in its purest form, where you only look at the heart and not at the colour of your skin. They will never accept growth in
the highest form, where we see how interracial relationships takes is to the next level of growth in our personal lives. They will never accept understanding, where we acknowledge that love does not first ask what the colour of your skin is. Why do interracial couples still find themselves on the receiving end of stares, and gossip when they are simply expressing the love they have for each other to the world? What if you were in that situation? Would you still feel the need for everyone to throw around their opinion about your own love story ? It is important for family and friends of the couple to accept their love and find a common ground, because you are not losing your family member, but rather gaining one. Change is difficult, and for an interracial couple to work through it to delve deeper in their their love, is something so breathtaking and beautiful. Just remember, love knows no race, it is blind, it is just society that tries to give it eyes.

Age is just a number If you could turn back the clock, what would you do differently? I attended a high school reunion recently with friends that I haven’t seen in over 30 years, and noticed how much older most of them looked. Aging happens to every one of us, and is one of life’s natural phenomenon. Our life choices will determine whether we age rapidly or not. The dangerous practice of spending too much time in the sun, is one of the leading causes of tissue damage to the face and body, including activating cancer cells. Drinking excess alcohol will certainly speed up the aging process , and will also effect your liver. Scientists have confirmed that the testosterone levels of older men will decline, and take much longer to normalize after drinking too much alcohol compared to younger men. Smoking cigarettes is also another addictive habit that most older folks picked up while they where teenagers. These dangerous chemicals will affect your lungs and other organs. The different foods that are high in saturated fats, sugar and sodium are also contributing factors. Stress together with a sedentary lifestyle, does play a part in the aging process. Getting older is inevitable, but we can slow down “Father Time by implementing the following: Spending as little time as possible in the sun. Abstaining from alcohol, cigarettes and all forms of drugs.
Eating smaller, healthier meals consisting of low GI carbohydrates, lean protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals and drinking plenty water. Doing weight training at least 3 times weekly, and learning to manage stress will also help. Check out my Facebook page Drugfreetraining Instagram dewee_1 Whattsap Martin on 084 865 0000 or email him on martin@ drugfreetraining.co.za for more info on training and nutritional programs for people 40 years and older.

So paar weke terug het ons by vriende op hul plaas buite Klerksdorp gaan kuier. Toe my hand kom by wat my wang moet wees, word ek yskoud. Daar is iets
anders op my wang as hare.

Luke Groenewold in Grade 4 entered into a robotics competition representing CurroTech and competed against many different schools. Luke came 3rd overall. The top 3 learners had a difference of seconds between them. Each learner had to build their own robot and program the robot from scratch to perform different things, for example the robot had to lift objects up or down, move these objects to different places and lastly detect colours of different blocks. All this had to be programmed by the learner. This is an amazing accomplishment, well done Luke!

The Glen Shopping Centre evacuated as ceiling collapses
Heavy rains led to flooding in the South of Johannesburg on Thursday, 21 November with the ceiling collapsing at The Glen shopping centre. Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said: “We did receive some reports of flash floods in the South and also (the) roof collapse, but we didn’t receive any
injuries that were reported.” The Glen was evacuated when the incident occurred and the roof will require major repairs. Clean-up operations carried on late into the evening, with many owners and managers back at first light on Friday morning, 22 November.
Bad vision contributes to bad driving and accidents “I didn’t see him coming”, “the car came out of nowhere”, “the other driver must be blind” – these words are commonly muttered after a vehicle accident and though they might sound like excuses, they are probably all true. The fact is that poor vision and driver fatigue are amongst the leading causes of accidents on South African roads. Motorists don’t see them coming. With the end of year holidays around the corner, thousands of South Africans will be hitting the roads. It is a time of year when vehicle accidents and deaths on the roads spiral. With poor vision and poor visibility amongst the causes of road accidents, Ruahan Naude, CEO at Dynamic Vision, says motorists should get their eyes checked. “An optometrist will check visual acuity and depth perception which has the greatest effect on vision while driving. Visual acuity is the sharpness of a driver’s vision and helps to judge space and distance between objects. Depth perception is what people use to determine the length, width, and height of an object. Depth perception is also important to determine how fast an object is moving. “An eye test is especially important if you have been experiencing eye fatigue, blurred vision or sore, red eyes. These symptoms could indicate problems with your vision which could, in turn, impact your safety on the road,” says Ruahan Naude, CEO at Dynamic Vision. He stresses that sunglasses with polarized lenses is a must-have for every driver – even those with perfect vision. These lenses stop glare from headlights, the sun, and even wet road surfaces. They also filter out harmful ultraviolet radiation. In misty and foggy conditions, polarized lenses can also sharpen details and improve contrast. Reducing strain on the eyes and providing UV protection with polarized lenses makes driving more comfortable and safer. “Conventional sunglasses cannot effectively filter out glare and in many conditions, such as in fog weather, they can reduce vis-
ibility,” says Naude. According to Naude, some people also experience loss of colour perception and increased eye sensitivity in the dark. To a lot of people these headlights, therefore, feel brighter and more blinding. This can make driving at night uncomfortable, stressful and unsafe. Some lens manufacturers have developed lenses and coatings to specifically address these sensitivities. For instance, SEIKO Drive is a lens that has been optimized for driving. It is available in single vision and progressive lenses (called Drive X). The progressive lens has a wider intermediate area, to give wearers a clear view of the side mirrors and dashboard while driving and both provide excellent clarity in the distance. These lenses come standard with a Road Clear Coating (RCC) which helps to reduce glare and reflections while driving, especially at dusk or at night. This means less eyestrain and more visual comfort. Polarized driving lenses are a great option for daytime driving, as they reduce glare and improve contrast. Naude concludes with these tips for safer driving: • Do not drive when you are tired. Get a good night’s sleep before tackling a long distance. • Make sure your windscreen is clean and scratch-free. • Ensure that your windscreen wipers are in good working order in the event of rain. • Clean your headlights and make sure that the bulbs are in good working order. • Don’t look into oncoming headlights - it will take longer to recover from the glare. • Reduce your speed in conditions of poor visibility such as in the dark and when it is foggy or raining. • Dim Your Dashboard. Bright lights from the dashboard and instrument panel of the car can distract you from the road. • Stop regularly at petrol stations and rest stops to stretch your legs and rest your eyes from focusing on the road.

BE CAREFUL OF SCAMMERS Prevention is the best defence POSING AS CITY OFFICIALS
The festive season is approaching and many scammers are sharpening their tricky ways to rob people of their belongings, particularly money. As such, the City continues to caution its residents of the scammers who are already out there, ready to trick people into giving them money under the pretext that they are City of Ekurhuleni employees. Recently, the City experienced a ransomware attack, which is a malicious software that cybercriminals can use to either block or threaten to publish your data unless a sum of money or ransom is paid. The most common way ransomware enters corporate networks is through email,
scammers often include mischievous links or attachments in emails that look harmless. Since the beginning of the year, the City has been inundated with complaints from people who have been scammed of their monies by people pretending to be municipal officials. Many victims were made to believe that they won a tender to supply the City with 240L waste wheelie bins. Therefore, they were lured into depositing large amounts of money into a bank account that was purported to belong to the City. Meanwhile other residents had strangers walking into their premises posing as City officials who monitor water or electricity meter boxes and ultimately robbed them.
On 18 November, domestic workers gathered in Verwoerdpark, Alberton, to receive a talk on self-defence. Linda Goodenough, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT, presented the talk and was supported by the SAPS Sector Manager and Social crime managers. “This year we have spoken a lot about preventing crime and general safety at our domestic watch meetings. We decided to end the year off with a discussion and demonstration on self-defence,” she explains. The content of the talk included how to defuse a situation and talk an attacker down, knowing ahead of time how you are going to react, how to weaken your attacker and get away, and more. “The aim of the class was to equip us

all with safety strategies, to make us feel confident about ourselves and our abilities which in return increases our self-confidence. Practice makes perfect. There is no time to think when the adrenalin is pumping, but when you know what your strategy is and you have practiced it long and hard physically, and in your mind, you will be better equipped to deal with a situation,” says Goodenough. After the talk it was time to get physical and the domestic workers had a good time while being taught some self-defence moves. “There was much laughter and action,” she says. “It has been excellent meeting with this group during the year and I believe we have all learnt much regarding safety and will take all that has been learnt into our community.”

Two cops killed in Johannesburg South
“Initial reports suggest the two members came under fire and they were both fatally wounded at Vleiroos Street while on their way to the complaint.” Two police officers were shot dead in Johannesburg on Saturday night after responding to a hijacking complaint. Police spokesperson Brig Vishnu Naidoo said a Captain and a Warrant Officer were responding to reports of a hijacking at Leonie street in Winchester Hills, in the south of Johannesburg at around 8pm. “Initial reports suggest the two members came under fire and they
were both fatally wounded at Vleiroos Street while on their way to the complaint. The hijacked vehicle has since been recovered in Klipspruit, Soweto.” National police commissioner Khehla Sithole said officers were working around the clock to find the killers. “We cannot rest until these killers have been found,” said Sithole. Anyone with information on the incident can call the Crime Stop number 086-001-0111.
SAPS takes time to educate children about safety Learners from Tom and Jerry Nursery School and Aftercare in Primrose East, and Little Shine Day Care in Delport informal settlement, received a special visit recently. Officers from the Primrose Police Station and members of the Primrose SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk visited the schools to teach the children about a number of crimes that affect children and what steps to take should they ever be a victim of
crime. “At both schools the learners were taught an easy way to remember the Child Line number,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. The children were entertained during the visit by an appearance by Mr Monkey. “We hope to visit more schools to sensitise our children about crime and how to report it,” said Maome.

The Lion and the Lamb Musical –
the Market Theatre’s Christmas special
The Lion and The Lamb, a hugely successful musical play originally created by John Kani and Barney Simon, comes back after a decade to open the festive season at the Market Theatre from Friday, 22 November – Sunday, 22 December 2019. John Kani will reprise his leading role in a performance that will see the telling of the biblically-based story of Christ’s life brought vibrantly to life on stage in the John Kani Theatre. Multi award winning director, James Ngcobo, will, for the first time, direct John Kani in his role as the main narrator in what promises to be an exhilarating reimagined production. Jazz and gospel powerhouse, Nokukhanya Dlamini, who was part of the original production comes back in her role as lead singer. The Lion and the Lamb is based on one of the greatest stories ever told. It is the journey of Jesus the child, the boy, the man and Jesus the son of God. It is a story for everyone young and old. The production was last produced by the Market Theatre in 2009 and received much critical acclaim. “It’s never easy to reimagine any classic but I am blessed to work with theatre giants like John Kani and Nokukhanya Dlamini who were part of the original cast. It makes my task much earier to undertake. My vision for the 2019 restaging of The Lion and the Lamb is to add young talented actors and musicians to blow up the musicality and acting in the production. I am blessed to have found some of the finest actors who will be taking the baton from John Kani in roles as supporting storytellers.
I am looking at breathing new life into a classic play, handled with the delicateness that it deserves and also to give emerging voices an opportunity to perform alongside a great actor like John Kani”, said James Ngcobo. (too many batons!!) “Since it was first staged The Lion and the Lamb has managed to deliver sold out performances. This speaks to the unparalleled quality production it has been and will continue to be. Audiences can look forward to spiritually charged evenings of praise and worship”, added James Ngcobo The narrative will be accompanied by a collage of traditional Gospel songs and songs from the International Gospel Songbook. Songs that are familiar to churchgoers and that celebrate the musical prowess of the country have been carefully chosen to accompany and underscore the stories from the parables. Some songs will be a direct extension of the stories. John Kani will be supported by some of South Africa’s best voices Nokukhanya Dlamini, Gugu Shezi and Nomfundo Dlamini. There will also be the highly acclaimed Lerato Gwebu, Lerato Mvelase, the singing sensation, Itumeleng Tshabane, and the brilliant guitarist, Avril Mkansi. They will all be backed by a four piece band under the musical directorship of the renowned musician, Tshepo Mngoma. In addition, the production will include a stunning set and accompanying visuals. Book your tickets now for a night to remember. Alternatively, book directly on www.webticket.co.za .

SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS LEGENDS TEAM UP TO SUPPORT GARY PLAYER INVITATIONAL The 36-hole tournament has for the past 20 years been the final tournament on the global Gary Player Invitational series, and is the major fundraiser for The Player Foundation’s selected beneficiaries Wings and Wishes and the Blair Atholl School. It’s a remarkable legacy that had Shaun Pollock in awe of the impact it has made for charity. “What The Player Foundation has done for charity has been remarkable. What Gary Player achieved as a golfer is one thing, and then when that came to an end the impact he has made through The Player Foundation is fantastic. He is so passionate and full of energy, and even though he is 84 it doesn’t affect the impact he is still having,” he said. Pat Lambie, who also played in his first Gary Player Invitational, was just as impressed with the longstanding charity impact of this tournament and The Player Foundation.
Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok Steven Kitshoff and an array of South African sports legends came together this weekend in support of The Player Foundation and its drive to make a difference for charity through the Gary Player Invitational at the Lost City Golf Course at Sun City from 23-24 November.
Brian Mitchell, and former Bafana Bafana stars Mark Williams, Jimmy Tau and Matthew Booth joined a field of men and women professional golfers and business leaders in the 20th anniversary of the Gary Player Invitational and to celebrate the over $64 million The Player Foundation has raised for charity, and its goal of reaching $100 million.
Kitshoff and fellow Springboks Bryan Habana, Akona Ndungane, Odwa Ndungane, Butch James, Patrick Lambie and Owen Nkumane as well as former Proteas cricket captain Shaun Pollock, International Boxing Hall of Fame member
All attendees spoke of their incredible admiration for the work of The Player Foundation and the 20-year history of this tournament in changing people’s lives.

Odwa Ndungane said he is certainly inspired to do his part for charity this weekend. “I was ecstatic when I received an invitation. We all know the icon that Gary Player is, so to spend some time with him and then also see some good come out of it for charity and to help The Player Foundation is a wonderful opportunity. All young South Africans can learn from the amazing work done by The Player Foundation,” he said.

“It’s been a crazy couple of weeks after the Rugby World Cup victory. South Africans just came out in their masses to share in our celebration and it was incredible to see. The team put in so much hard work and made so many sacrifices. It’s been an incredibly great journey,” said Kitshoff, who made his debut in the Gary Player Invitational.

For Kitshoff in particular, the Gary Player Invitational and its ability to use sport to change people’s lives resonates with a man, who after the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup triumph in Japan, has witnessed how sport can unite South Africa.
“I’ve heard so much about the Gary Player Invitational and I’m so excited to be here. Gary Player is so inspirational. When he talks it makes you just want to get up and conquer the world. It’s great to be a part of the good work of The Player Foundation and see the impact it is making in people’s lives,” he said.
