27 August09, 2019, Week 35 Week 21 Volume 23 May 2017,

The first annual #WomenCan event was a huge success. Local businesswomen came out in numbers to be inspired, network, learn and share in the success they have achieved. The breakfast event was attended by 100 women at Sha-Mani Lodge and Conference Venue with dynamic keynote speakers including Lizz Meiring and various local businesswomen. The tame TIMES #WomenCan revolution is an initiative that helps to empower and encourage businesswomen locally to build their business dream and to use their dream to impact other women in society. This networking event for women aims to support and inspire the attendees. Workshops are scheduled to be presented after the event that will assist the attendees in building sustainable businesses by gaining the necessary skills. “We reached out to a couple of successful women in Alberton who were lyrical about the potential that lies within all women and urged all the strong females to start believing in themselves this Women’s Month,” said Editor of tame TIMES, Garin Joemath. All these women shared testimonials, entrepreneurial tools and spoke potential into each women’s life and businesses. Lizz Meiring hosted the event with

aplomb, making attendees laugh and sharing the story about her long and illustrious career. Give-away raffles and exciting marketing opportunities for businesses were also given at the event. “We thank each and every partner and sponsor for their great contribution and we could not have made this event a success without your loyal support,” added Garin. tame TIMES Community Newspaper, GBS Digital, Taxi Times, ABSA bank, Coleman Properties and Alberton&Johannesburg South Business Forum would like to thank all the attendees and speakers and urge everyone to keep the #Womencan movement alive

Mieta Williams: Tannie Lizz Meiring was absolutely fantastic as MC. I am inspired by Dora the Shibeen Queen. She had to overcome incredible obstacles in developing herself as a business force. I now know anything is possible. I am proud to be a woman in South Africa today. Louise van Niekerk: I want to say thankyou to all involved for arranging

The Councilors of Wards 37, 94 and 106 are calling for a public meeting as requested by the residents of greater Alberton due to power outages. The residents shall decide on action to be taken in regards to the continuing power outages every weekend. A steering committee will be elected at the meeting, tasked with executing the decisions of the public.

the breakfast and inspirational talks at Sha-Mani. What a wonderful venue and delicious breakfast. Koena, the “crocodile” from Limpopo, what an inspiring lady. You made me proud again, to be a woman. Sindy Motloung: This was the first time I was able to attend something like this. I am glad to say at Coleman properties all staff, including ladies are treated with respect. I especially loved my colleague, Chrissie’s speech. You go girl !!! This event was amazing. Reminding us all to support each other as woman in all respects. Clearly #WomanCan. Angelique Celliers: The #WomenCan event made me realise that all of us struggle with similar obstacles in life and in business. I believe it is imperative that woman stand together in support of each other. I believe men and woman can achieve greatness by building on one another’s strength. #WomenCan is a wonderful call to arms in the sense of unleashing the strength, creativity and perseverance that exists in each and every one of us. Thankyou for the wonderful opportunity to listen to celebrated business leaders. I sincerely hope this will not be the last #WomenCan event.

Lizz Meiring: MC for the #WomenCan event; Short and sweat … “of course woman can, we’ve always done it.” What a wonderful privilege to spend the morning with so many creative, dynamic ladies. Alberton is definitely a breeding ground for excellence.

Alberton’s Psychiatrist empowers women I AM A WOMAN - WHAT’S YOUR SUPER POWER? As women, we have many roles - mother, caregiver, spouse, homemaker, friend, colleague and so many more. It is easy to lose sight of our own individuality and needs while trying to manage all of these roles. According to the World Health Organization, women are twice as likely to develop “common” mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, when compared to men. Women are also more likely to experience trauma, often by way of physical violence, sexual assault or abuse, and therefore tend to suffer PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Women who have experienced abuse are more likely to misuse drugs and alcohol, have suicidal thoughts or even attempt suicide. Women are also at risk of mental disorders throughout their reproductive years, e.g. menstrual disorders, pre and post pregnancy and menopause. Perinatal loss, infertility and sexual dysfunction in women pose a risk to mental illness. Women experience higher rates of emotional eating, body image disorders and eating disorders. Women are placed under immense pressure, trying to live up to the expectations of society. Oftentimes, women with emotional and mental health disorders suffer in silence. So, what can we do, as women, to take better care of our health? SELF-CARE: We tend to put others first and may feel guilty in making time for self-care. Self-care is really just “taking care of yourself” - which is vital for health and well-being. Practicing self-care can drastically improve our physical and mental health. It is important to recognise that self-care is not selfish. Unless a person takes care of their own needs, they will not have the psychological and physical energy to take care of another. PRACTICING GRATITUDE: Being thankful and showing appreciation for what is valuable and meaningful to you. By showing gratitude you embody a more positive attitude, which improves your personal, professional, and social life. Gratitude can be expressed internally, by

acknowledging all the good in your life, or externally, by recognising the good in the world around you. FRIENDSHIP: Has a large impact on our mental health because it makes us more resilient. Resilience is the ability to cope with stress and adversity. MINDFULNESS: Is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment and accepting it without judgment. Mindfulness is a key element in stress reduction and overall happiness. RELAXING: Spending time in nature, journalling, aromatherapy, meditation and yoga are activities that will help you feel relaxed. They all work in different ways. Journalling allows you to reflect and process your emotions. Aromatherapy uses specific scents and oils to alleviate poor emotional and psychological states. Get Active and Stay Active: Physical activity doesn’t just keep your body healthy; it gives your brain a boost, too. Physical activity and exercise are great ways to improve circulation and regulate breathing. They increase levels of oxygen, which will improve brain functioning and calm the nervous system. GET GOOD SLEEP: Good sleep helps you stay in good mental health. Sleep disturbances and irregularities can be symptoms of mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Pregnancy or menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, also cause sleep difficulties. HEALTHY EATING: What you eat may affect your mood and your overall mental health. Significant changes in appetite could be a symptom of various psychiatric conditions - mood disorders (unipolar and bipolar disorders), psychotic illness, drug & alcohol misuse, anxiety disorders, eating disorders. Reduce Smoking, Alcohol and Substances Smoking and using drugs and alcohol may help you cope in the moment, but in

the long term, it can affect your mental and physical health negatively. Substance misuse can lead to serious conditions such as schizophrenia. TAKE YOUR MEDICATION: Medication adherence is vital in treating and managing mental illness. Once you go through menopause, medicines may work differently for you. They may not be as effective or may have different or worse side effects. Always discuss medication concerns with your doctor. STAY CONNECTED: Building a network of supportive friends and family can help you stay in good mental health, have fun, and feel connected. Anhedonia (inability to experience pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable), isolating and withdrawing from friends and family are symptoms of depression and other mental illnesses. Having a good support system is a positive prognostic factor in recovery. It is important to stay involved as you get older. GET HELP: Reach out when you need help. Get in touch with a mental health professional if you need professional support. Let’s make a start, this Women’s Month, by making our mental health a priority. Take care of your body, mind and soul and always be kind to yourself. Celebrate your own unique self this Women’s Month and remember the words of Steve Maraboli, “There is nothing more rare, nor more beautiful, than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty”

CUPCAKES OF HOPE Stories of Hope Kegan was born with Down syndrome. At 18 months old he was diagnosed with cancer that left him paralysed from the waist down. Doctors said he would not make it past his second birthday. When Cupcakes of HOPE heard about his situation they decided to help and took on their first patient. It was 2009. Now ten years later Kegan celebrated his 11th birthday. He had never flown on an airplane or seen the ocean. Cupcakes of HOPE decided to give him a birthday he would never forget. The look of joy on his face as he experiences the sea is something that will stay with you forever. GET INVOLVED This year the country will mark the eighth National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer on September 28. Founder Sandy Cipriano is calling on everyone to get involved, mark the date in their calendars, start baking and literally make a difference in the lives of children Already activations and events have been planned for 88 malls across the country as the non-profit company hopes to better their target reached last year. Cipriano said she began this journey after her friend lost her three year old daughter to cancer. As the owner of a restaurant ‘Rio Sol Portuguese Restaurant” in Vereeniging, South of Johannesburg, she realised that she could do something to change lives. “The first year we raised R5000 and helped one little boy. Now we have helped more than 1500 patients... This is really the SWEETEST way to help save a life,” she said. “A Non-Profit Company (NPC) and Public Benefits Organisation (PBO) Cupcakes of HOPE aims to creates awareness and raises funds for children with life threatening diseases. This is achieved through our love for baking cupcakes,” she said. The funds raised, enable the organisation to assist about 70 patients each month to pay for their medical expenses, day-to-day needs like nutritional food and transport money to and from hospital. “This year we have already registered 65 new patients on our books. Last month we donated R25 000 to 16 year old Damon for his prosthetic leg and a further R75 000 to Jordan who flew to the USA for his trial treatment,” said Cipriano. Essentially Cupcakes of HOPE is a community driven project that brings everyone involved to ‘bake’ a difference in the lives of children with life threatening diseases. Volunteers are called Cupcake Angels and can be anyone. “Aged between three and ninety years old, students, firemen, lawyers and doctors, all come together from different backgrounds, income levels to bake a difference. All that is needed is a bit of time and loads of LOVE. We want to spread cupcake love all across South Africa,” said Cipriano

Three-year-old toddler Fidelity ADT and SAPS dies as fire engulfs home join forces in Elsburg

A three-year-old boy burned to death inside a house in Germiston on Wednesday, 21 August. Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi reported in a media statement that the toddler’s charred remains were recovered from the burnt rubble by City of Ekurhuleni firefighters immediately after the fire was put out. “Firefighters from Germiston, Boksburg and Wadeville fire stations swiftly responded to the scene with a fleet of five fire engines to 1 Nomad Place, Delville, for an eight-roomed house that was reported to be well alight,” said Ntladi. “The call was received exactly at 10:15 and the first arriving fire engine from Germiston central fire station was on scene within seven minutes after the reception of the call,” he said. A section of the roof had already collapsed when the firefighters arrived. “Offensive fire suppression was

conducted, and the flames [were] contained and extinguished with minimal damage to the entire house. “Two bedrooms had intense fire damage... Two others, including the lounge, had water and smoke damage, while the other rooms were completely saved,” said Ntladi. The body of the child was found after the blaze had been extinguished in one of the bedrooms where the fire was believed to have started. “As per information on scene, the child was alone in the room and the cause of the fire is still a subject of investigations,” added Ntladi. tame TIMES learned that one adult female patient was treated on scene for
