AKESO lends a hand to those struggling with work-related trauma A new support group is being launched for emergency services personnel who are exposed to trauma in their line of duty. This free support service will be hosted monthly at Akeso Alberton and first-responders, police officers, firefighters, paramedics and security services personnel are invited to attend. Psychiatrist, Dr Marshinee Naidoo, and social worker, Megan Hosking of Akeso psychiatric hospitals will lead the sessions, which will be held on the last Thursday of each month except for December. The inaugural trauma support group meeting will take place from 12:45 to 13:45 on Thursday, 31 October 2019, in Group Room 5 at Akeso Alberton, 15 Clinton Road, New Redruth, Alberton. The theme for this meeting will be: “Understanding your experiences and trauma”. “The aim of these monthly support group

meetings is to create a safe space where people who are first responders or work in jobs where they are exposed to trauma on an ongoing basis are able to share their experiences and learn from others,” Hosking explains. “This group will help them to better understand their experiences of trauma and what to expect after being exposed to work-related trauma, which can take a huge toll on individuals’ mental health and wellbeing, particularly if it is not appropriately addressed. In the sessions, we will also provide information about the options available for further assistance for those who may require it. “The format for the meetings will include an informative, educational presentation by a mental health expert, followed by group discussion of the topic and an opportunity for participants to share their own experiences. There will also be time for one-on-one interactions after the presentations,” Hosking says. Die oggendiens was vir my vreeslik.

Tip - Dankbaarheid. Leef en beleef.

A NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR

This past week has been a very sad time for the Alberton community as we said goodbye to Johan Reed (34) who was gunned down outside the Virgin Active in Meyersdal in Alberton on Monday evening. Johan was laid to rest on Friday. tame TIMES prays that God will be with the family and strengthen them and may Johan remain in our hearts and memories. October is also a month celebrated widely across the country as Oliver Reginald (O.R.) Tambo Month. The City of Ekurhuleni has lined up an array of activities to pay homage to this patriot and stalwart of the struggle for emancipation of all the oppressed South Africans. The City of Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 27 October laid wreaths at Oliver Reginald Tambo’s grave at Tamboville in Wattville in his honour and remembrance. The celebrations included school debates held in Ekurhuleni on 13 October for students to learn about diplomacy, international relations, world problems and possible solutions. The month-long celebrations are undertaken to preserve O.R. and Adelaide Tambo’s legacy, promote their values, and to engender a culture of selflessness. The O.R. Tambo commemorations are held under the theme: “Celebrating the 90th birthday of Mama Adelaide Tambo”.

Alberton ouers se trane verander in vreugde

JHB South heroes changing the world tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet the Metro Ministries Africa team located in Rispark, south of Johannesburg. Pastors Desmond and Jenny Naidoo are the founders and Pastors of Metro Ministries Africa. After being involved in ministry for 20 years and being in full time ministry for 15 years working with underprivileged children, youth and the aged have launched Metro Ministries Africa. “We are passionately committed to care, share, support and equip low income areas of our country; providing assistance to people of all race groups. Our 5 year vision is to impact and uplift up to 100,000 needy kids and people across 30 sites per week through our mobile trucks and teams. Our goal is to reach as many children as possible and to adopt 10 orphanages within 5 years. Those living in abusive environments, abandoned and living with HIV & Aids. We will provide life skills programmes that assist with education, sport coaching, meals, clothing and other areas of need. Children will be loved, cared for and given a fair chance at life. We encourage them to dream big and pursue it for a better future,” said Ps Desmond and Jenny. Once a month the Metro Ministries Africa also get together to bake bread, prepare hot meals and

then go into the streets in the south of Johannesburg and Alberton and feed the folks who sleep on the streets. It is a heart wrenching experience to see our fellow humans having to sleep on the cold concrete floors throughout all seasons. Metro Ministries Africa returns to their homes after midnight after feeding up to 500 people per night, but they are fulfilled because they have touched someone else’s life and given them hope in humanity. Metro Ministries Africa also reaches 600 senior citizens and spoils them with a lunch pack and a mini hamper. Once a month very special, dedicated and committed people get together make lunch packs with sandwiches and fruit then they go to old age homes and interact with the seniors. They spend time talking and having fellowship with the elderly folk. Some of the seniors don’t get any visitors and therefore they love the visits and they love the children that accompany us. The children bring huge smiles to the faces of the senior citizens. The children bring a joy that cannot be explained and so the homes are a buzz of chitter chatter for the time that we are there. They all come together because of their great love for God and His people and they are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Alberton Figures Finesse International Talent and Modelling Agency News

Laerskool Randhart Nuus Ons Bybelvasvra-reis na landsfinaal

Geskryf deur: Logan van der Merwe en Coenraad Olivier

The Alberton Figures Finesse International Talent and Modelling Agency finished their two monthly showcase events on a high with a very classy theme of Hats and Masks. The event took place at the Bracken Park Hall on Saturday, 12 October. These events highlight the abilities and talents the students have acquired throughout their courses. They perform on stage in front a of a live audience – mainly dotting family and friends to much applause and squeals. There were over 100 students that strutted their stuff on stage to pulsing background music and they performed their own glitzy sequences either as individuals or as groups. The juniors and seniors took to the stage like birds to water and amazed the crowd with their

colourful hats and masks. The outfits were well thought out and covered a large variety of worldwide fashions. There were three judges on the day that judged according to the originality of the outfits. There were several tied places for the best-dressed course categories. Miss Congeniality and Mr Personality were also announced as per the nominations of the students themselves. The next big event is the semi-finals for the National Student of the Year at the Roodepoort Youth Theatre on Sunday, 3 November. This is where all 19 national and international Figures branches compete against each other for the prestigious title. Good Luck to all the Alberton Figures contestants - we salute you and know you will do yourselves and Alberton proud.

• Dapperheid: As daar ʼn Goliat voor jou staan, sit die Here ʼn Dawid binnein jou.

Springboks grind out win over Wales to book World Cup final spot

The Springboks will play England in the Rugby World Cup final after Handre Pollard scored 14 points to steer Rassie Erasmus’ team to a hard-fought 19-16 victory over Wales in Yokohama on Sunday. Pollard nervelessly kicked the decisive penalty with four minutes to go as the tense game threatened to go to extra time with the scores locked at 16-16. “We’re in the final of the World Cup... but that’s only half way there. We’d love to win the World Cup,” said South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus. “We play a class England team in the final now but we’re there. We’ve got a chance now and we might go all the way. You never know.” It was a true battle of the boot as the 1995 and 2007 World Cup champions ground out a victory that consigned Wales to their third tournament semi-final defeat after previous losses in 2011 and 1987. “It wasn’t our day but I’m still proud to pull this jersey on and represent all the people in this stadium,” said Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, who was close to tears. The two teams played out a dreadful first half of rugby dominated by turgid setpiece, crash balls and aerial combat as both sides kicked the leather off the ball. There was none of the verve shown by England in their gripping 19-7 victory over New Zealand on Saturday, but the slowed rhythm suited the Springboks and their giant pack of forwards, reprising the tactics they also employed in their 26-3 quarter-final victory over Japan.

Bok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk showed a spark of flamboyance at the very start of the game, darting down the shortside from a scrum and chipping ahead, George North just doing enough to cover on the bounce. But any glimmer of bright, attacking rugby quickly faded amid a first quarter mired by never-ending scrum resets and poor kicking. When Justin Tipuric failed to roll away, Pollard stepped up and made no mistake with a simple first penalty, quickly neutralised by Dan Biggar when Willie Le Roux strayed offside, before the Bok flyhalf got his second after a Welsh scrum wheeled. Aerial ping-pong resumed, Wales

scrumhalf Gareth Davies eventually spilling a ball to hand the Boks advantage, as the first ‘Mexican Wave’ rippled around the stadium on 25 minutes to rival the action on the pitch. Wales came pouring in at the side of a driving maul and Pollard made no mistake with his third penalty. Welsh woes continued as tighthead prop Tomas Francis, the most used player by Gatland since the last World Cup with 41 Tests played, injured his shoulder in a tackle on Duane Vermeulen from the restart. One of Gareth Davies’ many box kicks almost brought success to the Welsh as Biggar fielded and offloaded to North, but the rare sortie into Bok territory

was ended by a smart tap-tackle by the ubiquitous de Klerk. North, clutching a leg, followed Francis off the pitch as Biggar kicked his second penalty after Aaron Wainwright was taken out off the ball to make it 9-6 at half-time, both teams shuffling off the pitch in front of a subdued arena. Biggar levelled the scores with his third penalty early in the second period, before Damian de Allende finally broke the tryscoring deadlock. The Bok centre shrugged off a weak challenge by Biggar and fended off Owen Watkin and Tomos Williams for a fine individual five-pointer that Pollard converted. With 20 minutes to play Wales spurned a shot at goal to go for deep lineout. The maul was thwarted but the Welsh went through multiple phases and were eventually awarded another penalty in front of the posts, electing to go for the scrum. The bold decision, made to gasps from the crowd, paid off as Ross Moriarty managed to get the ball to Tomos Williams who fed Jonathan Davies, the centre’s instantaneous pass finding Josh Adams, who crossed in the corner for his sixth try of this World Cup. Halfpenny hit the conversion to put the scores level and with Wales suddenly in the ascendancy. Both Rhys Patchell and Pollard missed with ambitious drop-goal attempts before the latter kicked his crucial fourth penalty to eliminate Wales and set up a final against England on Saturday.
