tame TIMES had a opportunity to meet Sensei Laurent Gaston Bellegarde, a globally recognised Sensei who started his karate journey in South Africa under Hanshi Koos Burger (South African Shotokan Karate Academy). He is currently a 6th Dan and runs a karate club in Brackenhurst, Alberton where he teaches together with his son Sensei Nicholas who is currently a 5th Dan. They teach both children and adult students. Sensei Laurent and his son still compete at national and international levels. He was selected as the national coach for his team for the World Union of Karate-Do Federation (WUKF) world championships held in Brazil in 2005, in Spain 2007, in Ukraine 2009, in Italy 2011 and Romania 2013, Ireland 2016, Scotland 2018 and Slovakia 2019. He holds the position of Chairman for SASKA. Sensei Laurent has achieved wonderful results at the world championships including

a 3rd place in Spain 2007, 2nd place in Ukraine 2009, 2nd place in Italy 2011, 2nd place in Romania 2013, 2nd and 3rd place in Ireland 2016, 3rd and 3rd place in Scotland 2018 and 3rd place in Slovakia 2019. When asking Sensei Laurent what his feelings are about Karate, his reply was as follows: “I feel that the art of Karate is beneficial to all children and adults as it brings confidence towards our life and the challenges that we face. Young or old, we all have fears that we may come across in life. Karate helps and trains us to make the best decision be it in self-defence situation, or any other decision we may need to make. It helps you to think, plan quickly and effectively. Karate is also beneficial to ones’ mental and physical health and improves the core strength of the body. We see Karate as a way of life; it teaches you self-defence, confidence and discipline. We feel that people who practice the Art of

Karate become achievers and live life in a positive way. We believe perseverance is the pathway to success,” said Bellegarde. Bellegarde also had high praise for his son Sensei Nicholas and stated that they work well together. “Our best achievement in life is the fact that we have had the opportunity to train together as father and son for the past 30 years and have both obtained Medals in the Karate World Championships at the same time,” added Bellegarde. Sensei Laurent is married with 3 children and 5 Grandchildren. Two years ago he gave up his professional career to do Karate full time and devote all his time to his family and karate students. For further information, Sensei Laurent or Sensei Nicholas can be contactedon: Sensei Laurent 082 4942704 And his Son Sensei Nicholas 082 3028637 They currently teach at Glenview primary school and Brackenhurst primary school. Sensei Laurent also teaches self-defence classes to ladies only.

Dis winter. Vir my en Gysie beteken dit vakansie tyd. Wildtuin vakansie tyd. “Sit dit sommer in my handsak”, sê ek. Mense, ek sit nog en gesels toe ek ‘n geluid hoor hier by my.

A NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR As we enter August, we will be celebrating National Women’s Day soon which is an annual public holiday in South Africa, celebrated on 9 August. There is much more to this day as history shows that the Women’s March took place on this day in 1956. The march was organized in protest against legislation that required African persons to carry the ‘pass’. The ‘pass’ was an identification document which restricted a black South African’s freedom of movement under apartheid. The ‘pass’ allowed them to enter white areas and had come into force under the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950 On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women staged a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against proposed amendments to the act. They left petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom’s office door. They stood silently outside his door for 30 minutes. tame TIMES encourages readers to share your stories about National Women’s Day.

On Friday morning, 26 July a fire broke out at Saambou Sentrum building on the corner of Penzance and Clinton Roads. The fire was reported during the early hours of the morning and the fire is believed to have started at the centre of the building, according to Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi. Arriving at the scene tame TIMES spoke to a Lewis employee who shared his disappointment of the whole incident as it may prove to have an impact on their employment. No injuries were reported and business will be affected for a few days as investigations are taking place as to what caused the fire.

Geluk: Waar is dit – binne my of rondom my?

Nee, geluk is ‘n innerlike toestand waar ek ten spyte van my omstandighede geluk in my omstandighede in dra. Hartlike groete

Cut-Off day for use of refuse bins

The City of Ekurhuleni reminds customers that it will no longer collect waste contained in any container/bin that is not issued by the City. The commencement date for implementation of this change has however been rescheduled to 1 August 2019. This move to reschedule the commencement date serves as a grace period for residents (who do not have a 240L wheelie bins) to ensure that they acquire the 240L wheelie bins by 31 July 2019. The 240 wheelie bins have been distributed to residents and remain available at all the City’s waste management depots and selected Customer Care Centres for residents who have not collected theirs yet. The City’s fleet of refuse trucks are fitted with an automated mechanism to pick up the bins and empty the refuse into the compactor. The City is therefore urging all residents who missed the mass roll out to collect their wheelie bins from the waste management depots and selected Customer Care Centres between Monday and Friday from 8h00 to 15h30. Residents must ensure that they bring copies of their IDs and municipal account statements to collect the 240L wheelie bin. The bins are issued for free, while the refuse collection is charged at R174.41 per month for each bin. Residents who are in need of more than one bin may apply for such a bin, at an additional monthly charge. Residents who use the bins are urged to place them outside their homes at 7:00 on calendar days provided by the

City and take them back as soon as the collection is done. There are many advantages of using the 240L wheelie bins, which include that they: • provide more storage capacity than the refuse bin used previously • are compatible with the truck’s lifting mechanism, and thus workers do not have to carry bins on their back • have a longer lifespan than a bag (approximately 8 years) • minimizes tearing of bags by rodents and stray dogs, and infestation of rodents • are durable to utilize and easy to clean • are easy to handle with low risk of being exposed to sharp objects • do not generate water vapour and are made of pest repellent material • are cost-effective in that they do not require continuous acquisition of refuse plastic bags • promote uniform service standards and cleanliness of the city. In an instance where a resident loses their 240L wheelie bin, they need to report and get a case number from the South African Police Service and take it to the nearest waste depot together with a copy of the municipal rates account statement and an ID copy to receive a new 240L wheelie bin.

Mallett: Nyakane sub was crucial in Bok comeback

!

Former national coach Nick Mallett has lauded the Springboks after they snatched a 16-all draw with the All Blacks in Wellington over the weekend. A try after the hooter by replacement scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies enabled the Springboks to level matters having been on the back foot for most of the second half. Speaking in the SuperSport studio after the game, Mallett said: “This was just a brilliant result with hard work by the team. They were under the cosh a bit with the penalty count in the second half. But they came back at the end because they believed. The crucial sub was Trevor Nyakane coming on. Frans Malherbe was puffing and as Trevor came on we started to get a bit of dominance at scrum at time. And it was a penalty at scrum time that gave us the opportunity to kick out, get a lineout and have an attacking play. Willie le Roux does a run-around and

then there’s a beautiful chip by Cheslin Kolbe.” Mallett also had high praise for the work-rate of loose forward Pieter-Steph du Toit. “And who’s running up the middle? A guy with an engine that goes all day. Pieter-Steph du Toit. Thank goodness he didn’t touch the ball and Herschel Jantjies scored. Jantjies had a fantastic impact when he came on. Speed of service was excellent and his defence was good. He should retire right row because it isn’t possible for him to get any better.” Mallett also lauded the Springbok defence for keeping the hosts to only a solitary try. “What I liked about the Springbok defence was that they read the deep pass well and kept on pressing forward. I thought is was definitely a case of defences dominating both attacks because the Boks’ attack was also pretty static because they were knocked behind the advantage line by the All Blacks’ press defence and we did the same to them.”
