Noddy Nursery received a special visit from Ronnie Recycler (Mpact Recycling mascot), Yasmeen Adam (Procurement Representative from Mpact Recycling) and the following Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Semi Finalists: Belinda Bothma, Jacolien De Bruyn, Mokgadi Malebye, Vee Van Heerden, Tammy Perry & Madelein Fourie on Friday, 10 May. Mpact Recycling is the leading paper and PET recycler in South Africa and has partnered with the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa pageant, a woman empowerment programme, for the fifth consecutive year. Through the partnership with Mpact Recycling, the top 100 Mrs South Africa Semi Finalists are required to work alongside Mpact Recycling at schools with the aim of: promoting recycling awareness, supporting fund-raising initiatives and increasing recycling
volumes. Each Semi Finalists has a target to generate 2 tonnes of recycling at the schools that they visit. The Ronnie Recycler programme allows schools to raise funds, as they are paid for their recyclables, whilst teaching environmental awareness, responsibility and sustainability. The partnership is valuable as
it highlights the importance of recycling. By recycling, you benefit the environment in a number of ways - it diverts recyclable paper, paper based packaging and plastic away from landfills; reduces greenhouse gas emissions and prevents the incineration of recyclable paper. Did you know that long-life milk and juice cartons are now recyclable? Recycling your used, empty cartons is easy and only requires you to remove or lift the cap, turn out the corners, flatten and replace the cap. The flattened carton is now ready to be recycled in your nearest Ronnie Bank. Noddy Nursery would like to encourage more community members and businesses to play their part in saving the environment by donating all their unwanted paper, magazines, newspapers and cartons to the school for recycling. They need your contribution to help them increase their recycling volumes on a continual basis in order to raise funds for this wonderful nursery school.

Woman jumps from second floor at Eastgate tame TIMES was informed by Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Capt De Jager, that a woman aged 42 allegedly jumped from the second floor at Eastgate Shopping Centre on Thursday afternoon, 9 May. Reports confirm that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. De Jager mentioned to tame TIMES that the woman’s motive is not yet clear. “She was declared dead on the scene and we do not know what her motive could have been,” said De Jager. As police investigations continue, parts of the mall remain closed to the public. Eastgate’s management send their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased in this time of mourning. An inquest docket has been opened said De Jager. In a post on its Facebook page, Eastgate Shopping Centre said the incident occurred at approximately 1.40pm on Thursday afternoon.

Assumption pays tribute to Holocaust victims
On Thursday, 2 May, the Principal, Mr Workman, along with matric pupils Chiara Bonanni and Chinenye Ngwu from Assumption Convent School, attended the Yom Hashoah ceremony at the West Park Jewish Cemetery. This ceremony is held annually as a memorial to the millions of victims who
were killed in the Holocaust and under Nazi Germany. It is an incredibly moving ceremony, and Assumption is proud to be have been a part of it. Assumption were the only non-Jewish School to attend and pay tribute to the Holocaust victims.

On Tuesday, 7 May the staff of Creative Academy School of Excellence hosted their Mother’s day event in honour of what Mothers contribute to society each and every day! It was a pottery barn theme where the moms and children modeled a “Family Unity” structure out of clay the Lord being at the top, the father just below, the mother at the centre of the family holding it all together and the children following gently behind. Creative Academy wants to give a special thank you to Audrey from “Audrey’s Designs” who helped facilitate the morning.
Online school registration postponed to 20 May 2019 The civil rights watchdog AfriForum and the Solidarity Movement’s School Support Centre (SSC) were just informed that the Gauteng Department of Education will postpone the online applications to 20 May 2019 to make corrections to the application system. This after AfriForum and the SSC joined forces on 5 May 2019 to send an urgent letter from their legal team to the Gauteng Department of Education regarding the failings of the online school registration platform. This platform would have opened on 13 May 2019 for the 2020 learner registrations. “AfriForum views this news as an enormous victory. We also welcome the Department of Education’s decision to postpone the process and correct problems with the system,” says Carien Bloem, AfriForum’s Project Coordinator for Education.
Holy Rosary High School participated in the Annual WIESCE (Wits University Integrated Experience in Science, Engineering and Commerce) competition, competing against twenty other schools in Gauteng. Participants were given the scenario of an aircraft crashing over the Pacific Ocean, and had to present a preliminary investigation containing the possible reasons why the aircraft crashed and future preventative and safety measures. They were only given the transcription of recordings between the aircraft and
control towers and a few other details to work with. Our team, consisting of (L-R) Courtney Laros, Oshai Naidoo, Tia Poovan, Daniella Johnston and Simone de Castro, achieved 98% for their presentation and won the competition. The girls each received laptops and a helicopter ride over Johannesburg as their prizes and will also present their investigation findings at the STEM (Science Technology, Economics and Maths) 2019 conference in August.
“We welcome the Department’s decision to create room by postponing the process to correct problems with the system,” says Melanie Buys, Head of Systems at
SSC. Both organisations are concerned about the manner in which the online school registration platform is set up: According to the department and the trial system it makes no provision for parents to choose themselves which school is their first choice for their children. The school located geographically closest to the parents’ residential address is simply provided as the primary choice, irrespective of the school’s language medium of instruction, subject selection or even hostel options. With this urgent letter from its legal team AfriForum and SSC asked that the system be adapted or the process be postponed until the system could be revised so that parents can indeed make a choice based on these aspects. Further both organisations feel strongly that any learners already registered for Gr. R at a primary school for this year must also be given preference for Gr. 1 placement at the same primary school for 2020.

Running from Pretoria to Cape Town Ekurhuleni Shines in South African to support differently-abled children Citizen Satisfaction Index
On Wednesday, 8 May, Chris Geils (41) from Sunningdale, Cape Town, along with a team of 11 other individuals (able-bodied and differently abled) took a one-way flight to Pretoria with the aim of running back to Cape Town to change the perceptions around disability. This incredible non-stop 24 hour, 10 day, 2100km journey from Pretoria to Cape Town will test every member of the team and culminate in the OCAL Global team competing in the FNB 12 ONERUN on Sunday, 19 May. “People are disabled not because of their condition, they are disabled by the poorly accessible world we currently live in. With all of those daily challenges, disability can be something that you create within yourself… that disables you from living a life that’s whole and that’s full and that’s meaningful,” says OCAL Global founder Nicolene Anley. One of the team members, Chris has committed to raising R25 000 on BackaBuddy to support differently-abled children in the Northern Cape. “The OCAL 2019 JOURNEY FOR CHANGE is not only being run to raise awareness around “disability”, but will also be raising funds for Differently Abled children in the Northern Cape. All these children have physical disabilities most commonly resulting from Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Bifida, amputations, genetic syndromes, spinal injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. The necessary funds for his or her immediate mobility and day-to-day liv-
ing needs, all these funds raised will be used to purchase in consultation with our occupational therapist partners, wheelchairs, walkers, prosthetics, crutches, and other requirements,” says Chris Chris shares his inspiration behind his BackaBuddy campaign. “When I was 24 years old I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis - a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with no known cure. Over the next 6 years I would yoyo between states of being well and then lows of feeling terrible and being in constant pain. Eating anything would leave me in pain and immediately running to the bathroom! At the age of 30 I decided to make a change and listen to my body, it was about this time I started running. Thankfully I am well enough now to live a healthy, active lifestyle but this could change at any moment and I want to make the good days count! It is for this reason that I want to be able to help and bring about change for the children in the Northern Cape,” says Chris. “When I heard about the Ocal Global journey for change I knew I had to get involved. Sometimes in order to make people sit up and take notice, you need to do something a little crazy. The journey for change has just the right amount of crazy for me. While out on the road, times will get dark and legs will get tired but I will always hold the children in my thoughts and heart. We have a chance to make real positive change doing this and what better way than by pushing myself out of all my comfort zones,” concluded Chris.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mzwandile Masina has welcomed the results of the sixth South African Satisfactory Index (SAcsi) conducted by Consulta. The survey measures the citizens’ satisfaction and trust in service delivery in eight Metropolitan municipalities as a snapshot - Buffalo City, Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Johannesburg, Mangaung, Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane. The 2019 SA-csi results revealed that the City of Ekurhuleni had the highest level of customer satisfaction of the three Gauteng Metros. The City of Ekurhuleni received an index point score of 55.7 while the City of Tshwane received 51.3 and the City of Johannesburg received 49.9. Both the City of Tshwane and the City of Johannesburg performed below par according to the report. “We are delighted with the results of the sixth SA-Citizen Satisfaction Index which reaffirms the findings of the recent Gauteng City Region Quality of Life Survey, which place the City of Ekurhuleni as
the Best Performing Metro in Gauteng. The ANC led Coalition in the City Ekurhuleni remains committed to running an unapologetically Pro-Poor Government, which is obsessed with delivering quality services to our citizens. We will now work towards being the number one metro in the country and continue to deliver on the mandate the citizens of Ekurhuleni have given us,” said Mayor Masina. The overall satisfaction score is heavily influenced by the big gaps in the citizen expectation versus perceived quality. This is the measure of what citizens expect, versus what they actually experience in terms of service delivery. The SA-csi forms part of a global network of research groups, quality associations and universities that have adopted the methodology of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) via its Global CSISM program. Patrons of shops at Bracken Square in Alberton on Sunday, 5 May provided the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) with information about a man who repairs cellphones in front of a liquor store selling dagga to learners and to the public. The DEU members jumped into action at 11am, monitored the suspect for a short period before pouncing.
The suspect was found in possession of twenty (20) ziplocks of dagga all labelled “cheese” on the packaging. He even volunteered information that he sells a ziplock at R50 each. The 33-year-old South African suspect was detained at the Brackendowns Police Station and charged with possession and dealing in dagga. He is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
Alberton SAPS arrests 52 suspects in crime crackdown Alberton Spokesperson Capt Ramotshela reported to tame TIMES that members of the Alberton SAPS arrested 52 suspects from April 18 to April 22. “One suspect was arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after he stabbed a man. The suspect is known to the victim, who laid charges. The police were on the lookout for the suspect, who handed himself over,” said Ramotshela. Ramosthela further reported that another incident included a murder in a shebeen where a suspect was taken in for questioning and will

Trails prepares youth for Spur School Series
On Friday night, 3 May, Dinamika High School and Alberton High School had a friendly night-time training session at Thaba Trails to prepare them for the upcoming Spur School Series. Dinamika organized this event in collaboration with Wendell, the owner of Thaba Trails. The friendly competitiveness amongst the riders was great to witness as they got down to business at the beginning of the tag team race / training session. There were nearly 30 riders from both schools that rode against each other in teams of four or 5 riders. Seven teams rode in the 5-hour night race tag team event from 16h00 until 21h00. A special route was set out for this event with each lap being 3.1km in distance. Laps were timed randomly and the fastest lap recorded was by one of the Alberton High team riders, being 7minutes and 56 seconds. The purpose of this event was for the cyclists to get in as much saddle time and fitness training before the upcoming Spur Series, to encourage interaction between
team mates and the Alberton schools, but , most importantly, to have fun on their bikes. The organizers would like to thank the sponsors for their support. Thank you to Kyalami Cycles for the water bottles and to the generous Dinamika parent for the stunning medals that were handed out to each and every rider in recognition of their participation and enthusiasm. The number of completed laps recorded in the time period allocated decided the winners. First place completed 33 laps, second place 31 laps and third place 29 laps. Alberton High placed 1st and 2nd with Dinamika placing 3rd. Thank you to all the supporting parents who spurred the riders on and to Dinamika for supplying the food fuel for the MTB riders to continue for 5 hours straight. Good luck to all the high schools from Alberton in the upcoming Spur School Series! The season starts with the first Gauteng South race taking place on Saturday, 18 May at Phoenix High School in Vereeniging.
