Proposed new Ekurhuleni University to create jobs
09 April 2019, 15 Week 21 Volume 09, 23Week May 2017,
Reporter: Robinson Nqola Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina says the university that the city is planning to build will create jobs and attract investment. Masina made the comments during his State of the City Address at the Germiston Council Chambers on Wednesday, 27 March 2019. He said that the metro had commissioned a feasibility study on the construction of the university which would focus on engineering and aviation studies, amongst others. Masina said that the Department of Higher Education and Training agreed that there was a need for a university in Ekurhuleni. “We are still negotiating the modalities of what shape and form it will take so that we can complete this kind of work. The significance of building a university in our city will not just be limited to areas of education. A university is a complex institution set up that broadly impacts urban development.” He also said that plans were underway to rename roads and streets within the metro. “We cannot dwell in a city in which its hallmark bears names of history that moves counter to the democratic postcolonial society we are actively building as a country. We have therefore embarked on a process of renaming the roads and streets within our city.”

Police nab armed truck hijackers
One man was arrested by the Primrose police, with the help of the Germiston Flying Squad, while four escaped following an alleged truck hijacking, last Friday. The arrest was made on Main Reef Road in Primrose. “The truck driver told officers that his journey started in Germiston, where the truck was loaded with alcohol to the value of R1.5-million,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
“The BMW’s five male occupants allegedly opened fire on the security vehicle, puncturing all of its tyres.” “He was then escorted to Elandsfontein by a security vehicle. On the corner of Main Reef and Stanhope roads, the convoy was allegedly approached by a white
BMW. “The BMW’s five male occupants allegedly opened fire on the security vehicle, puncturing all of its tyres.” Three of the suspects, all armed, then exited the vehicle, allegedly pointed a firearm at the truck’s driver and instructed him to drive the truck to the Primrose Cemetery. “When they reached the cemetery, another truck, without a trailer, reportedly arrived and the suspects attempted to connect the trailer, filled with alcohol, to the truck,” said Maome. “It is reported that this process was hampered as the wiring between the truck and trailer did not correspond.” While the suspects were still busy, they saw the police, who had been alerted to the crime, and started running in different directions. The officers gave chase and were able to corner one of the suspects. “While searching the 37-year-old man, police found a 9mm firearm, with no serial number, and several rounds of live ammunition in his possession,” said Maome. He was arrested on charges of truck hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition. He was detained at the Primrose Police Station and will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

A note from the
EDITOR
The Easter weekend is upon us, a time where families spend time together for the holiday break. This is one of the busiest times for families in South Africa. Easter is an important event on the religious and Western calendar. After Christmas, it’s the tradition that most people in the world celebrate. It is a time for religious commemorations as well as a celebration rooted in cultural traditions, but regardless of its meaning, the backdrop is families reuniting. Families use the occasion to get together to share their customs or pass their religious beliefs on to younger generations. tame TIMES encourages each and every reader to send their opinion about what you think Easter symbolizes.
