President Ramaphosa tackles the issue of Eskom “The consequences may be painful, but they will be even more devastating if we delay.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa argues that Eskom is in crisis and the risks the deterioration of the State owned electricity provider poses to South Africa are grave. The President says that Eskom could severely damage our economic and social development ambitions. “We need to take bold decisions and de-
cisive action. The consequences may be painful, but they will be even more devastating if we delay. In responding to this crisis, we are informed by the need to minimise any adverse economic cost to the consumer and taxpayer”, said the President. The President said that he will ensure that there is meaningful consultation and dialogue with all key stakeholders. “We will lead a process with labour, Eskom and other stakeholders to work out the details of a just transition, and proper, credible and sustainable plans that will address the needs of all those who may be affected”. “As we address the challenges that face Eskom, we also need to safeguard our national fiscal framework, achieve a positive impact on our sovereign credit rating, and pay attention to the rights and
Pregnancy education a priority in South Africa Experts indicate that there is a lack of education about pregnancy in South Africa, which can lead to avoidable complications at birth or long-term developmental challenges for the child. Pregnancy Awareness Week, which runs from 10 to 16 February, aims to spread information that promotes healthy pregnancies. “Newly pregnant women face a lot of choices – from how to best manage their pregnancy, to which medical professionals to see and where to deliver. Finding information that is accurate and applicable to them can be a challenge,” says Dr. Howard Manyonga, an obstetrician and the Head of The Birthing Team, an affordable maternity care programme. Manyonga highlights four key things that all pregnant women should know: Prenatal care is crucial to a safe delivery: Tests and check-ups during pregnancy are vital to preventing anything from going wrong during childbirth. The risk of premature delivery or an emergency C-section goes up if women do not get adequate prenatal care. Regular visits with a midwife allow for proper monitoring of fetal growth and detection of complications like urinary tract infection which can cause premature delivery. Your diet impacts your baby: Eating a balanced diet is very important for healthy fetal development, as is avoiding things that can harm the baby such as alcohol, smoking and too many sugary snacks and drinks. Taking prenatal multivitamins is a
good way to ensure your baby is getting what it needs to grow. Costs can be unpredictable: Many women choose to deliver in a private hospital but do not realize that it is impossible to predict their final bill. You need to budget for the possibility of an emergency C-section, extra hospital days and specialist fees. For those who are uninsured, this can be financially crippling. You are protected by labour law: Pregnant women cannot be discriminated against in the workplace or expected to perform any tasks that are damaging to their unborn child, including heavy lifting and exposure to chemicals. More regular bathroom breaks and allowances for morning sickness are written into the Constitution. It is illegal to dismiss a woman because she is pregnant. In order to tackle many of the challenges faced by women in South Africa, Dr. Manyonga designed a maternity programme called The Birthing Team, supported by healthcare management company PPO Serve. The Birthing Team makes complete private maternity care affordable for uninsured women by charging an allinclusive fee that covers all necessary scans, tests, medications, services and assessments from 12 weeks of pregnancy to six weeks after delivery. With a focus on antenatal care and patient education, the teams reduce the risks of pre-term delivery and emergency Csections. It is currently operational at Netcare Park Lane in Johannesburg, the Femina Hospital in Pretoria and JMH City Hospital in Durban.
obligations of Eskom’s funders”, said the President. Eskom has come up with the nine-point turnaround plan which the Government supports and want to see implemented. In line with this plan, Eskom will need to take urgent steps to significantly reduce its costs. It will also need more revenue through an affordable tariff increase. “We need to take steps to reduce municipal non-payment and confront the culture of non-payment that exists in some communities”, added the President. The President said that Government will support Eskom’s balance sheet, and the Minister of Finance will provide further details on this in the Budget Speech. This we will do without burdening Eskom with more unmanageable debt. “To ensure the credibility of the turna-
round plan and avoid a similar financial crisis in a few years’ time, Eskom will need to develop a new business model”, said Ramaphosa. “This business model needs to take into account the root causes of its current crisis and the profound international and local changes in the relative costs, and market penetration of energy resources, especially clean technologies”, he added. This is important for the entity to manage the transmission grid combined with the systems operator and power planning, procurement and buying functions. “It is imperative that we undertake these measures without delay to stabilise Eskom’s finances, ensure security of electricity supply, and establish the basis for long-term sustainability”, concluded the President.

Louis wins big at
Eye of Africa title in playoff
On Sunday, 3rd of February, Louis de Jager won his fifth Sunshine Tour title when he took the Eye of Africa PGA Championship on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to take his career playoff record to three out of three. After finishing regulation play in a share of the lead on 12-under-par with Trevor Fisher Jnr, the pair had to wait out a storm for nearly two hours before they could play their second shots on the playoff hole. In the end, De Jager was able to win with a simple par on the par-four 18th, while Fisher made a bogey. “I’m glad to keep my playoff record up, and I’m proud of that,” said De Jager. “During the delay, I knew what I had to do, so even though there was a lot of pressure, I was able to hit it really close to the hole and I could just tap it in.”
The victory is easily the biggest in his career, coming as it did in the 96-yearold championship which has had some of the greatest names
in South African golf win it. “It’s a big trophy to have your name on. I’m really honoured. It’s been one of my goals and it feels great to have achieved it,”
The story of the Madrid Derby
The Madrid derby between the city’s two biggest teams – Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – is a more than century-long story of friends, neighbours, and most of all, rivals. Although the city of Madrid currently boasts five LaLiga teams, as Getafe, Leganes and Rayo Vallecano all have gained promotion in recent seasons, Real versus Atletico is the big one for many natives of the city, known as madrileños. The derby is now the most played game in Spanish football history, and among world football’s most celebrated fixtures. After Real Madrid were officially established in 1902, and then Atletico the following year, the two sides faced off in various friendlies and unofficial meetings before the first recorded official meeting in the Campeonato Regional Centro, a 1-1 draw on 2 December 1906. The rivalry continued through different regional and national championships, until 1928/29 when LaLiga began with both clubs as initial founder members. Their first meeting in the new competition came on the 24th February 1929 at Real’s Chamartín stadium. The home team won 2-1, with an extra edge added as both goals were scored by forward
Monchin Triana, who had joined from Atletico just the previous year. The idea of players crossing the city was not new, even then. Santiago Bernabeu, the legendary Blancos president who gave his name to the iconic stadium they play in to this day, guested with Atletico in the 1920s. Real loaned Atletico forward Ramon Grosso in 1963/64 to help fight off relegation, while Mexico’s Hugo Sanchez actually scored for both teams in LaLiga derbies during the 1980s. That’s not to say it’s always been friendly. While ‘El Clasico’ with Barcelona is arguably LaLiga Santander’s biggest game internationally, for many at Real the derby remains the most special. “The team we wanted to beat, at all costs, was the neighbours,” Blancos legend and all-time great Alfredo Di Stefano recalled. “Losing meant our fans had to suffer jokes from the next day in the office, the bar and the street.” Over the years LaLiga has provided 163 opportunities for such ribbing. Real have 86 victories, Atletico 39 wins, with 38 draws, including the most recent games at both the Bernabeu and Wanda Metropolitano stadiums.
he said. The final round proved to be a difficult one for all the main protagonists, and Daniel Greene, who at one stage at the 13th held a threestroke lead, fell out of contention with three bogeys in the final four holes to finish third. Fisher bogeyed the par-three 16th, but pulled back that shot with a birdie on the par-five 17th before making par on 18 and losing out in the playoff. In response, De Jager had dragged himself into contention with successive
birdies on 13 and 14, but bogeyed the 17th before forcing the playoff. “I was watching the leaderboard throughout the round,” he said. “At one stage I was three behind. I thought I was two behind Daniel, and I made two birdies so I thought I was tied, but I was still one behind. That helped me keep my focus and concentrate on the final few holes. “I had a good chance with the putt on the final hole in regulation to win. I wasn’t going to leave it short, but I hit it probably a foot too hard and it just didn’t take the break.” It was the second victory of the 2018/19 Sunshine Tour season for De Jager, and with five other top-10s to his credit, he’s clearly the form man as the season draws to close.
