Safety

“tame TIMES LEARNED THAT GAUTENG SCHOOLS HAVE BECOME TERRAINS PRONE TO CRIME AND VIOLENT INCIDENTS” With recent attacks in Gauteng schools, questions have been raised as to whether parents, teachers and the community are losing the battle against this scourge of violence. Since then, the Gauteng Government has consulted with a wide range of stakeholders to address this ongoing instability and thus agreed to hold a school safety summit under the theme: ‘ “Safer schools to support learning and teaching.” In all forums stakeholders, have agreed that such an intervention is long overdue and pledged their support for a coordinated initiative to rescue education in the Province. tame TIMES learned that Gauteng schools have become terrains prone to crime and violent incidents. This is a threat to the successful achievement of educational goals. I personally encourage the community to take a stand with tame TIMES in praying for our schools because educating our youth is important. Our youth deserves a future and that future starts are our schools.

FREEDOM DAY

Some facts you should know! On Saturday, 27 April, South Africans will commemorate Freedom Day – not just another public holiday, but rather an important day to remember the country’s history and the dawn of a new democracy. It is a day of importance to South Africans due to it marking the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the start of a new democratic government, led by Nelson Mandela. HERE ARE FIVE FACTS ABOUT FREEDOM DAY THAT EVERY SOUTH AFRICAN SHOULD KNOW: 1. The day celebrates the freedom of a nation and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994. 2. The elections were the first non-racial national elections where everyone of voting age and from any race was allowed to legally vote. 3. Of South Africa’s 26.7 million eligible voters, it is noted that 19.7 million voted in the 1994 national election. 4. The election was won by the ANC with 62.65 % of the vote. The National Party (NP) received 20.39%, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) 10.54 %, Freedom Front (FF) 2.2 %, Democratic Party (DP) 1.7 %, Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) 1.2 % and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) 0.5 %. 5. Freedom Day was celebrated for the first time in 1995, where Nelson Mandela addressed the nation on the day and has since been celebrated every year on 27 April, in memory of the day that changed our nation.

On the first commemoration of the holiday on 27 April 1995, President Nelson Mandela addressed Parliament and stated, “As dawn ushered in this day, the 27th of April 1994, few of us could suppress the welling of emotion, as we were reminded of the terrible past from which we come as a nation; the great possibilities that we now have; and the bright future that beckons us. And so,

we assemble here today, and in other parts of the country, to mark a historic day in the life of our nation. Wherever South Africans are across the globe, our hearts beat as one, as we renew our common loyalty to our country and our commitment to its future.” When this day arrives, remember it for what it stands for and means to this country and be proudly South African.
