Suspect nabbed for extortion The suspect demanded R30 000 from the man and if the demands were not met then something terrible would happen to the victim and his family.

On Tuesday, 8 January, a 34-year-old suspect was arrested after attempting to extort R30 000 from a Bedfordview man by threatening his family. The Bedfordview resident had for some time been subjected to threats against him and his family. The suspect started communicating with the victim from an unknown number via Whatsapp in which he detailed how he knew the family of the victim. The suspect then demanded R30 000 from the man and if the demands were not met then something terrible would happen to the victim and his family. EMPD Spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago reported that the victim contacted the Bedfordview Police Department who then made contact with the SAPS Crime Intelligence head office and the EMPD SWAT Unit members. The victim continued his correspondence with the suspect. The victim and the suspect proposed to

meet up at Eastgate Shopping Centre for the ransom hand over. The operation was set up by SAPS Crime Intelligence with the assistance of EMPD SWAT team as well as a hostage negotiator. On Tuesday, 8 January around 2pm, the EMPD SWAT Unit members, after receiving information about delivery of the demanded money at the Eastgate Shopping Mall, positioned themselves strategically at the shopping centre near where the money was dropped off. Once the victim had left the shopping centre the suspect collected the money and was arrested. The cash was recovered and a cellphone found on the suspect reflected the threatening messages he had been communicating to the victim. The suspect was detained and a case of extortion and intimidation was opened.

“Matric is a lot like a marathon - you’ve got to start running and just keep going...” One of 2018’s top performers was Lara Irons from Holy Rosaryin Edenvale. Lara walked away with 10 distinctions in the IEB matric exams. She received a full house of 10 distinctions, including distinctions for Advanced Maths and Advanced English.

Toyota Gazoo racing SA’s attiyah lead on stage 6 Racing resumed on the Dakar Rally with Stage 6, which took place on Sunday, January 13th, and saw crews return to the bivouac at San Juan de Marcona via a 309 km stage and more than 500 km of liaison. The stage went according to plan for Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Nasser Al Attiyah (Qatar) and French navigator Mathieu Baumel, who extended their lead to nearly 38 minutes by finishing second on the stage, 02:17 behind Peugeot driver Sebastien Loeb. “Today’s stage was extremely difficult, with some massive dunes and tricky navigation,” said Al Attiyah after arriving at

the bivouac in San Juan de Marcona. “We led for most of the stage, but then made a small mistake near the end, which allowed Sebastien (Loeb) to take the stage win.” Al Attiyah reported a clean run in terms of the Toyota Hilux, which powered through the tricky terrain without missing a beat. His standing after the long stage puts him 37:43 clear of Loeb, who has moved into the second position after MINI’s Stephane Peterhansel lost 18 minutes on the stage, relegating the MINI driver to third on the table. It was also a solid stage for Giniel de Villiers, partnered with Dirk von Zitzewitz,

who set the 8th-fastest time on the day. The Toyota Hilux crew were running in fourth position for most of the stage, but lost time due to tricky navigation near the end of the test. The same can be said for teammates Bernhard ten Brinke and Xavier Panseri, who spent most of the stage in third position. They, too, lost some time near the end of the stage, going ninth-fastest and moving into 9th position in the overall standings. De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz also broke back into the Top 20, pegging 18th position thanks to their solid performance on Stage 6. In the meantime, Toyota Hilux driver

LaLiga ends 2018 with great support!

2018 came to a blissful close, as the soccer community of Katlehong township endured 14-days of action-packed, kasie flavoured football during the sixth annual Scara Ngobese Memorial Games, held at the famous Somhlolo Grounds. The Ekurhuleni Games are one of three festive season township tournaments that Spanish Football League, LaLiga supported during the festive season. The festive season tournament, which commenced on 17 December 2018, aimed at empowering the local community through skills development and youth upliftment. LaLiga, thus took it upon itself to support the tournament through branding, kit sponsorships, soccer balls and CSI initiatives, such as a u13 and u15 soccer clinic lead by former Bafana Bafa-

na midfielder, Teboho Mokoena. The Scara Ngobese Memorial Games and the Scara Ngobese Trust was established in memory of its namesake – Emmanuel “Scara” Ngobese. These games were aimed at honoring his legacy and to realise his wishes, to see Katlehong at the forefront of South African football. “A tournament like this is key to revealing the soccer potential not only in South Africa, but across Africa,” said Antonio Barradas, LaLiga’s Managing Director in South Africa. “We strongly believe that the future of football is in the continent, and that’s exactly why we chose to support and collaborate with local tournament organisers, in this case the Scara Ngobese Trust.” During the tournament, 24 teams competed for the Scara Ngobese Memorial

Games title, and the first prize of R100 000. The cup was won by Aston Villa FC, who beat Zone 3- Amaberete 5-2, with four goals scored by the tournament’s top goal scorer, Thomas ‘Ginjer” Kgope. Ginjer scored an overall 5 goals in the tournament. The Scara Ngobese Trust Chairperson, Mike Manana, also heaped praises for LaLiga’s solid support of the Memorial Games, thanking the international organisation for its substantial contribution towards the success of the Games. “LaLiga’s support of the tournament not only brings stature and recognition to local football but helps us in promoting football at a grass-roots level standpoint but, most importantly, shows their love for the Scara Ngobese as well as the people of Katlehong,” says Mike Manana, Chairperson of The Scara Ngobese Trust. “The standard of football this year was remarkable, it goes to show that there is immense talent in the townships. Congratulations to Aston Villa, they were the best team this year and we hope to see them again next year,” Manana concludes. The Scara Ngobese Memorial Games are part of LaLiga’s efforts to provide its assistance when it comes to activities carried out across the footballing world relating to the promotion of the game, social responsibility and grassroots development.

Aron Domzala (Poland) proved just how tough the car is. The young driver crashed out of the Dakar Rally on Stage 5, when his car fell down a steep incline – so steep that the only way to recover the vehicle was by helicopter. Once the Toyota was back on the ground, the assistance crew simply fired it up and drove it to the bivouac – testimony to the undeniable toughness of the Hilux. That same toughness and reliability will be tested on Stage 7 of Dakar 2019, which has been widely touted as the toughest of the event.
