When I went closer, I noticed that it was not ceiling board but a concrete slab”, said the employee. She further added that the childrens screams are still lingering in her mind. “They cried and pleaded for help as
they were fighing for their lives. There was nothing I could do. I am glad that a group of men responded quickly and saved the lives of some children. Vehicle stolen in Edenvale While patrolling in the Thokoza area, members of EMPD’s Public Order Policing Unit Task Team recovered a vehicle which was stolen from Edenvale. The black Toyota RunX was found on Wednesday, 23 January abandoned on Sweet Khoza Street. Acting EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said it is believed the vehicle was stolen in December. “When officers saw the vehicle they stopped and investigated why it was parked on the roadway without occupants in it,” said Mokheseng. He said officers proceeded to contact the 10111 callcentre and were informed the vehicle was stolen. “SAPS Forensic Unit were called to take fingerprints from the Toyota RunX.” Mokheseng said the vehicle appeared to be in a good condition and was towed to SAPS’ Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni for safekeeping and further investigation.

RIP Roydon Olckers A family member has described one of the children who died at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark on Friday as “beautiful child of God”, reports Netwerk24. Roydon Olckers, 17, was the school’s star athlete. He was among the three pupils who died when a concrete slab above a walkway bridging two buildings at the school collapsed on Friday morning. Family member Nicky Snyman broke the news of Roydon’s death to his mother Sharlene. Jan Toerien, a teacher at the school, told Netwerk24 that Olckers’ had to be identified by his huge calf muscles. Snyman said Olcker’s father Donovan and his mother were devastated at the loss of their eldest child.

No risk of structural collapse of roadway support pillar Management
of
O.
R.
Tambo
International Airport confirmed on Monday, 4 February that a certified structural
engineer
has
examined
cracks on a support pillar of the elevated departures roadway at the airport and has determined that there is no risk of a structural collapse. The inspection of support pillar number 23 was carried out last Tuesday 29 January 2019 by the structural engineer and the airport’s maintenance engineering team. This pillar is located by the domestic terminal entrance/exit on the lower road ring and provides support to the upper road ring of the airport. The
defects
were
classified
by
the
structural engineer as cracking of the mortar inside the bridge expansion gap The structural engineer determined that the cracks were caused by the expansion and contraction movement of the bridge deck on the pillar head. Under
normal
circumstances,
the
expansion joint gap is free of plaster. However, during construction this pillar expansion joint was plastered to neaten the appearance work area. Adjacent pillars with open expansion gaps can be seen in the image below. The recommendations of the structural engineer were to: • Remove all the loose concrete and mortar from the bridge deck pillar head; • Finish the bridge ends with mortar; and • Apply wet to dry epoxy to the exposed surface of the pillar head, then shutter the pier and pour in flowable concrete. The remedial work commenced as per the engineer’s recommendations. The current status of the remedial work can be seen in the image below. The maintenance team

Eagles celebrate Directors League victory
The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign last weekend. The club had a Sunday Promotion League, a Saturday Third League, and a Sunday Directors League match scheduled. However, the club only played their Directors League match against Bedfordview Cricket Club, as the other matches were called off. The Saturday Third League match was cancelled by the Easterns Cricket League and the Sunday Promotion League was declared a draw as the
pitch was unplayable because of rain. In the Directors League, the Eagles travelled to Bedfordview. The home team batted first and set a target of 235 runs, all out, in their 50 allotted overs. The day’s top bowlers were Len Jacobs with three wickets in 10 overs for 42 runs, Frank Williams with two wickets in 10 over for 45 runs and Theuns Herbst with two wickets in eight over for 52 runs. The Eagles then had their turn at the crease and knocked up 236 runs, with a wicket in hand, winning them a match.
