INSIDE Holy Rosary believes in
making dreams a reality
Finally, a positive news spin on ‘South Africans studying abroad’. Talia Smith, a South African director, created a short film called “Umama”, one of the few films to be chosen by New York University to be produced as part of the prestigious school’s Advanced Narrative course. Holy Rosary provided their school hall as the location in Johannesburg for the NYU student film crew -on Saturday, 9 June. “Umama” is inspired by the director, Talia Smith’s, personal experience growing up in Johannesburg. They cast Connie Chiume in the lead role. The script was one of the few to be chosen by NYU to be produced as part of the Advanced Narrative course and it will be NYU’s first South African based undergraduate film. The Umama film will also be submitted to festivals around the world. As a South African student who has been studying abroad, Talia feels it is her responsibility to use her platform to expose the world to the unique stories that exist in South Africa and spread the beautiful philosophy that forms part of the spine of South African culture Ubuntu. As a filmmaker, her dreams are to assist in bringing not only South African stories to the world, but also to give South African talent exposure on a greater stage. Umama is the first step towards materializing these aspirations.

Rand Water informs the city of reduced water supply The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents in Ekurhuleni to utilise water sparingly as water supply to customers is anticipated to be reduced from 24 to 27 June. This is as a result of the Rand Water, which supplies the City with water, conducting valve installation work for the duration of the period on the main supply pipeline. “Rand Water has notified the City of Ekurhuleni of the planned reduced water supply during the above-mentioned period and have assured us that they will keep their bulk supply reservoirs to a maximum capacity to minimise water supply interruptions,” MMC for Water and Energy, Tiisetso Nketle. “We do, however, anticipate low water
pressure to no water in some areas for the duration of the Rand Water reduced water supply and low pressure over the next week while the system recovers,” she continued. As such, residents and businesses, are cautioned to conserve water and implement immediate water saving measures to avoid complete depletion of supply. Technicians will closely monitor water levels in the reservoirs and water tankers will be provided in the areas with no water supply. Areas with direct feeds from Rand Water and those in high-lying areas may be affected adversely and be will among the areas that will be prioritised. Other measures to be implemented by the
City of Ekurhuleni include securing the supply by filling the reservoirs – this may involve closing off supply between 22:00 and 05:00 over the weekend in some areas. Pressure management and throttling the supply will also be implemented where necessary. MMC Nketle also wishes to distance the City from statements attributed to the City made on various media platforms regarding the situation.

HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE YOUTH DAY?
Michaela Araujo:
On Youth day, I took the opportunity to spend time with my loved ones and enjoy each other’s company. In our tradition food represents togetherness, culture and celebration and for the occasion, I made a traditional Roast Portuguese Chicken. After some good food, we had some fun and games, which included a competitive game of Thirty seconds and Uno.
Monique Moody:
For Youth day, I had the privileged of handing out scarves and caps to young kids between the ages of 2 and 16 years to keep them warm for the winter nights ahead. Our “Girls for Change” group, which is part of the URSCA Ennerdale Church, walked the dusty streets of an informal settlement between Ennerdale and Lawley, South of Johannesburg. The warmth of their appreciation made the cold walk worth it.
Jazrick Macpherson:
Youth day was very relaxed this year for me. Seeing that fathers day was on the same day and on a Sunday there was not much to do but to spend the day with people who enjoy one’s presence. I had a blast with my girlfriend, we had lunch at Eastgate and watched Avengers Endgame and to top of the youth day we had a nice Sunday drive with love songs.
Boudine Smith:
Youth day is an important day to celebrate your own youth. I went to Joburg zoo walked around went on rides and later that day I went ice skating with a couple of people just to remind myself happy
because
it
has
the
capacity
to
see
beauty.
Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.
