A NOTE FROM THE
EDITOR MAKE A DIFFERENCE
THIS MONTH
As we enter a new month and a new season, and with South Africans experiencing economic and social negativity, my thoughts run towards how we can make a difference to change the world around us. In our community I have learned from a lot of people that are consistently part of making a difference and changing the world around us. Many people, in trying to discover what it really takes to change the world, find that you do not have to be an Einstein or Superman. You simply need to reach out to one person. I encourage each and every individual to live with this motto in mind, ‘Each one reach one’. Make a difference this month and in this season.
Substantial decrease in petrol price on the cards The price of gasoline in South Africa will drop for the first time in sixth months in July, reducing some inflation pressure. The price of a litre of 95-octane gasoline will decrease to R15.81 a litre in the economic hub of Gauteng from midnight on July 3, compared with R16.76 in June, the Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe said Friday in an emailed statement. The wholesale price of diesel will fall by 0.75 rand and the cost
The teachers from all five schools received training on the educational and developmental needs of preschool children, as well as the administrative roles and responsibilities of ECD practitioners. The 300 children attending these schools are also guaranteed a nutritious daily meal for the next 12 months provided by the supermarket chain.

This sentiment was expressed by Leigh Hudson-Ingle, founder of Urban Comet, an early childhood development centre (ECD) in Plantation, Boksburg, which together with schools in Wattville (Tholulwazi Preschool, Thamboville Daycare, Humble Little Achievers and Seronhla Daycare) benefitted from Checker’s extensive support.

“We are certainly overwhelmed at the varied support we’ve received from Checkers through its implementation partners. From teaching programmes and educational resources for our staff by the Early Care Foundation, the feeding program via the Lunchbox Fund to providing new preschool toilets through Newkidz, Checkers has helped us grow and develop in all the necessary areas to become a recognised
and high standard ECD facility,” explains Hudson-Ingle. The toilets at Urban Comet include a separate facility for disabled learners. “The extra bathroom for children with disabilities creates the perfect inclusionary environment, which is extremely important. Having similar toilet facilities for ablebodied and disabled learners helps them understand that all children must be accommodated.” “Within a year of its launch, this initiative that seeks to empower the women at the head of ECDs has seen 54 schools and more than 3 700 children across South Africa benefiting from it. Partnerships like these are one of the ways Checkers acts for change in the communities where we trade,” says Lunga Schoeman, CSI spokesperson for the Shoprite Group. With the retailer’s support, all five schools are now well on their way to being registered with the Department of Social Development, which means that in time they will each receive state subsidies for their learners.

Netcare Union Hospital leads the way in cardiovascular
On Monday, 24 June 2019, a cutting-edge new procedure, which uses ultrasound shock waves to ‘crack’ highly calcified deposits and blockages within coronary arteries, was successfully performed for the first time in Africa at Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton. The Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) procedure, as it is known, was performed on a 79-year-old Gauteng patient, who had severe coronary artery disease (CAD) and had previously suffered a heart attack. It was undertaken by a team led by interventional cardiologists, Dr Chris Zambakides and Dr JeanPaul Theron, in the cardiovascular centre’s catheterisation laboratory at Netcare Union Hospital. Dr Zambakides and Dr Theron explain that the new Shockwave IVL procedure enabled the team to successfully clear a way through the patient’s severely calcified and blocked coronary arteries, so that these could be successfully supported with stents, which are small mesh tubes that are used to support and treat diseased and narrowed arteries. “The team is most impressed with the results we were able to achieve with the new procedure. The Shockwave IVL system will enable us to tackle even the most challenging of calcified coronary arteries, and reduces the risks associated with traditional coronary angioplasty and stenting in highly compromised cardiovascular disease patients,” says Dr Zambakides. “The patient was also immensely pleased with the results of the Shockwave IVL procedure, which took some 90 minutes to complete, and says that he almost immediately felt relief from the severe chest pains, fatigue and other debilitating symptoms he was experiencing. Indeed, as we were leaving the theatre afterwards, he surprised us all by announcing that he felt ready to go home,” he added. Dr Zambakides explains that severely calcified

They are with Suzanne Wallace, director: medical education and scientific communication at Shockwave Medical. and diseased coronary arteries can make coronary interventions such as traditional angioplasty and stenting considerably more difficult and significantly complicates the procedure. He says not only can this be associated with higher complication rates such as rupture but also with poorer long-term outcomes. “Acutely it may be associated with stent underexpansion and in-stent restenosis [ISR], which is when a blocked artery that was opened up with angioplasty and stent becomes narrowed again. In this case, the patient had occlusions, or blockages, of between 70% and 90% in various coronary arteries.” Dr Zambakides says that due to the patient’s age and the presence of comorbidities, or additional medical conditions, surgery was not
a viable option. Cracking the calcium with a high-pressure traditional angioplasty balloon was also ruled out in favour of the new ultrasound shock wave approach because of concerns of complications due to the large amounts of calcium deposits present. “While rotablation, which involves the use of a tiny drill-like device, is suitable for grinding the calcium out of smaller vessels, it is extremely difficult to achieve the necessary pressure needed to break up severe calcifications in major coronary arteries during an angioplasty procedure,” he adds. “The Shockwave IVL system involves the use of a special integrated balloon with electrodes attached that produce localised sonic pressure waves to ‘hammer’ at the calcium on the arte-
Private Prosecution Unit intervenes after Lesufi’s failure to act
Angel Ndaba, Chairperson of the school’s governing body, and Philemon Ndaba, Chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), approached the Private Prosecution Unit after allegations of rape against one of the male teachers from the school fell on deaf ears. This follows after a meeting in which the district officials indicated that they would be referring the case to the district department
of education for further investigation. According to sources at the school, the district official that failed to investigate the matter and take steps against the relevant teacher, was in the meantime also demoted – thanks to continuous pressure by AfriForum. A rape case was already opened at the police against the relevant teacher in September 2018. According to Andrew Leask, Investigator at AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, there is however no sense of urgency among the investigating officer to start with the investigation. “This alleged offence is regarded in a very serious light, seeing as an underaged child is involved and the police is especially tasked with protecting vulnerable groups such as women and children. The fact that both the police and the provincial department

of education are failing to act is a horrible negligence of their duties and that is why AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit decided to intervene in the matter. The police cannot be selective with the prosecution of suspects.” The Gauteng Department of Education immediately took steps when allegations of sexual assault against a teacher of Bryanston High School surfaced earlier this year. “Why doesn’t Lesufi act with the same diligence against the offender when the victim is an orphan from a rural school? Lesufi’s trend to only become involved with issues where he can enjoy media attention is to the detriment of the most vulnerable learners that are really in need of his attention and devotion,” says Carien Bloem, AfriForum’s Project Coordinator for Education.

AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit placed pressure on Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC, as well as the SAPS after no steps were initially taken against a teacher of the Aha-Thuto Secondary School that allegedly raped a 14-year-old school girl. The teacher was (according to sources at the school) removed from the schoolgrounds and the police is now investigating the charge against him.
rial wall, and breaks it up. After this, the IVL system’s integrated balloon is expanded, making placement of the stents considerably easier and safer in these patients. As the technology safely selects and fractures the calcium, any trauma to the soft tissue is minimised.” According to Dr Zambakides, the Shockwave IVL procedure is ideal for patients with heavily calcified lesions, particularly where these deposits are thick and subintimal, or deeper down in the vessel. “The severity of calcification is not always obvious but may only be visible once you perform an angioplasty. In such an instance, instead of persevering with the angioplasty stenting procedure, we recommend now rather switching to the Shockwave IVL procedure in these types of patients, which make up about 5% of those seen by cardiologists.” Glenda Pakes, director of ParagMed, the distributors of the Shockwave IVL system in South Africa, says that to date, more than 3 000 of these procedures have been performed globally, with the bulk having been undertaken in Europe and New Zealand. According to Pakes, they have been completed in patients between the ages of 60 and 80 years with a success rate of 99%. Netcare Union Hospital’s general manager, Esmé Abrahams, congratulated Dr Zambakides and Dr Theron for successfully completing South Africa’s first Shockwave IVL procedure and “making this safer new treatment option available to our patients with advanced cardiovascular disease”. “Netcare Union Hospital’s cardiovascular centre is served by some of the leading cardiovascular specialists and has always been among the most innovative and cutting edge units of its kind in the country. We are most gratified to now be able to offer this advanced new treatment option for these complex patients,” she concluded.

Habana embracing life after rugby By: Michael Vlismas
The moment Springbok legend Bryan Habana walked into a recent function at the British E m b a s s y, his erstwhile

teammate Jean de Villiers recognised immediately the one element of life after professional rugby that all players need to come to terms with. Clothing. “The only thing I could fit into was my old number two Springbok suit. As I got to the function Jean saw the suit and said, ‘Whoa’. He opened my suit jacket and said, ‘This is one of your number twos isn’t it?’ He caught me out properly,” says Habana as he reflects on the transition he has made from a career as one of the most decorated rugby players in history to what he terms as “life outside that bubble”.
It’s a transition that hit home again as he this week packed a suitcase for the upcoming Vodacom Super Rugby final, where Habana will join a select group of Vodacom Red clients who have qualified for an exclusive trip with him and Jonathan from Radio Raps fame as they first travel to Dubai and then onwards to wherever the final will be played. And packing a suitcase means, of course, you need clothes. “You know, when you stop playing, you almost have to buy a new wardrobe because the spon-
“They say you need to prepare for life after rugby, but when you’re in that bubble it’s very difficult to know what’s outside of it and when that move is going to happen. But you certainly become aware of the life professional sport has given you. It’s a very unrealistic one in terms of how the real world works. All of a sudden you go from a life of receiving a very detailed daily programme which tells you what to wear every day and where to go, to having to do all of those things yourself.” For Habana, this #RedFinalTour and the concept of an unknown destination resembles his own journey at present. “The transition period for any professional athlete is never the easiest. It’s not always that easy to prepare for something that’s really unknown. Only once you step into it and you start finding out where you fit into the real world,
you start finding your feet a bit more. “I’m fortunate in that I studied while I was at Toulon and managed to get some form of business acumen behind me. I’ve always been interested in the digital space and am working in that area now. I’ve also worked with some big brands throughout my career, and was conscious of creating my own brand that corporates would want to continue working with after my rugby career was finished. “So in this 18-month period that I’ve given myself to discover life after rugby, I’ve been fortunate to not have been too stressed about what’s next for me. I still don’t know what I’m going to be doing fulltime, but at the present time I’m really enjoying the opportunities, like being part of this Vodacom Red Final Tour experience.” And he’s certainly embracing this next phase of his life, wherever it may lead.
