AfriForum’s East Rand neighbourhood Teacher who ‘masterminded’ kidnapping was ‘besties’ with Amy’Leigh’s mom watches receive VCP training

Approximately 57 members of AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Germiston and Springs received vehicle control point (VCP) training, on Wednesday, 28 August. This training was presented in Kempton Park by Col. Wouter Heyneke, an SAPS reservist in Kempton Park. The training mainly focused on applicable definitions, judicial requirements, execution and safety aspects of SAPS road blocks. The positioning, management, logistics, as well as the correct procedures to demobilise and search vehicles while also searching people – everything under the

leadership of the SAPS – were discussed. Col. Heyneke emphasised the importance of communities increasingly becoming involved in the fight against crime. “The SAPS is only as competent and powerful as the community allows. The community is the eyes and ears of the police.” “The training was a huge success and once again highlights the importance of community participation in safety initiatives in our town. This partnership is indispensable and we ought to develop and extend it on a daily basis,” says Gerhard Cilliers, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Brakpan branch.

The 27-year-old teacher who was arrested for allegedly orchestrating the kidnapping of 6-year-old Amy’Leigh de Jager at Laerskool Kollegepark in Vanderbijlpark is a close friend of the child’s mother, Angeline de Jager. On the teacher’s Facebook page, the two women can be seen together in several pictures, and compliment each other using the nickname “heksie” (little witch). The teacher’s name is known to News24, but cannot be revealed until she has appeared in court. On Thursday, national police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said the court appearance had been moved to Monday. The teacher was arrested on Wednesday along with two others. On Thursday, Amy’Leigh’s father Wynand de Jager confirmed that the teacher was known to the family. Four men snatched Amy’Leigh from her mother’s car at the school on Monday and drove off in a white Toyota Fortuner, News24 previously reported. Her kidnappers dropped her off between 02:00 and 02:30 on Tuesday in a street close to The Shakespeare Inn hotel in Vanderbijlpark. A man and a woman took her to the Van-

derbijlpark police station where she was reunited with her parents. On Thursday, shocked residents of Vanderbijlpark and friends of the De Jager family told News24 that Angeline and the teacher were “besties” who knew each other well. Images on Facebook appeared to confirm this. In one picture of the two of them, posted on August 1, almost exactly a month before Amy’Leigh’s kidnapping, Angeline comments: “Jitte heksie maar jys mooi!” (Wow, heksie, you are so pretty!), to which the teacher replies: “jys die mooiste heksie!!” (you are the prettiest heksie!). In another post on March 17, Angeline writes: “Baie liefde vir jou!!” (Much love for you!). The teacher was suspended on Thursday following her arrest. This was announced by Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi at the school on Thursday afternoon, following a meeting with the school governing body. The two others who were arrested are a 40-year-old woman and 50-year-old man. The three were allegedly ready to skip town and had packed suitcases when they were arrested by members from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, a security official told News24 on Thursday. The security official told News24 the room where Amy’Leigh was held after being kidnapped was dirty, dark and “almost like a dungeon”. “It was no place for a child; hell, it was not fit for any human,” he said. The motive for the kidnapping is a subject of much speculation. According to a source, as well as a WhatsApp voice note attributed to the teacher’s stepfather, which has not yet been verified, the teacher owed money to drug lords. A ransom of R2m was initially demanded following Amy’Leigh’s kidnapping.

#StopGenderBasedViolence #SouthAfricansNeedToUnite #WeWantToHearFromYou Instead of celebrating the arrival of Spring and the singing of birds, sadly we are mourning the gruesome and cruel passing on of innocent souls at the hands of merciless killers who do not value human life.

Die 2018 tame TIMES kunsveiling was so 'n reuse sukses, tot so ‘n mate dat ons besluit het om dit 'n jaarlikse gebeurtenis te maak!

Leighandre Jegel, Uyinene Mrwetyana, Karabo, and Thoriso join a long list of young women whose lives were brought to an untimely and abrupt halt by their murderers.

Holding Hands.

Is the right to life enshrined in our Constitution for the sole preserve of the murderers?

Why is it that our laws in this country create an impression that the most vulnerable in our society, actually do not count? How is our Constitution responding to the right to life for the innocent victims whose lives have been taken? How come the murderers and rapists seem to be having more rights, protection and a free reign to prey on our children at their will? Please send your answers to Garin.Joemath@tameTIMES.co.za

‘n Digitale katalogus van die kunswerke sal nader aan die tyd voorsien word. Ons vertrou dat julle ons gulhartig sal ondersteun.

SNAKES ARE COMING OUT TO PREY, BE CAUTIOUS!

The weather is getting warmer as Spring sets in, and snakes will soon be coming out from hibernation hungry in search of food. The City wishes to caution pet owners to be on high alert and keep an eye on their pets as they may fall prey to snakes. Residents should not panic when they spot a snake in their living spaces. However, they should always keep the snake within their vision at a distance of about 5 metres away, and not try to kill or handle the snake. A snake should be given a right of way rather than having their way being blocked, and a sight of where it ends up should not be lost, while help is sought. The Ekurhuleni region is prone to snakes due to the availability of the Blesbokspruit river system, Bullfrog Pan and all other Highveld grassland and many open spaces with good eco-systems that provide both food and shelter for snakes.

they are extremely dangerous with the puff adder known to be very instinctive, slow in pace and quick to sense danger. The rinkhals, or ring-necked cobra, is a fast moving multi-feeder that is good at faking death. It is easily identified by the two white stripes that are visible across its neck when it spreads its hood. Not all snakes are poisonous, however, should a snake bite a resident, it is advisable to visit the medical doctor immediately. Furthermore, residents are cautioned to avoid snakes in their spaces by keeping the yard clean, as an untidy yard creates a habitat for rodents which is the primary food for snakes. Use your municipal 240ℓ wheelie bins to dispose your refuse as this may also be food for rodents which will attract snakes. Finally, when feeding your pets put out enough for the day, don’t have extra food on site to avoid feeding rodents.

In case of encountering a snake, residents can call the City’s snake catchers listed below: Customer Care Centres and allocated snake catcher: Makhosonke Mabena 071 833 6549 and Sonny Katisa 084 451 1288

SA mourns death of Chester Williams

Legendary 1995 World Cup-winning Springbok wing Chester Williams passed away on Friday at the age of 49. Williams was a unifying figure and will be remembered as a humble champion. It’s believed that Williams suffered a heart attack. The tragic news comes less than two months since the world rugby community was rocked by the news of James Small’s death.

In total, Williams played 27 Tests for the Springboks in a career that spanned from 1993 to 2000. He scored 14 tries. After his career came to an end, Williams began a highly-promising coaching career, and most recently served as head coach at the University of the Western Cape, with UWC going on to win the 2017 Varsity Shield under his leadership. He was also one of the few South Africans invited to carry the Olympic torch in 2004 on its way to Athens.

couple of times, I have been around the world participating in different competitions representing South Africa,” added Lambrechs. Lambrechs complemented the way Japanese carry themselves saying that people should copy 10 percent of their culture as it will improve the way of life.
