Ekurhuleni police arrest five ‘instigators’ in illegal land invasion BY: CANNY MAPHANGA

According to News24 the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) arrested five suspects who are believed to be “instigators” in an illegal land invasion in at Mandela Park in Etwatwa on Thursday, 20 June. “Despite previous interventions at political level as well as from Human Settlement officials to dissuade the land grabbers from this illegal activity, the erection of structures persisted which left the metro police with only the option of dismantling the structures and removing the land invaders,” EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred M Kgasago, said in a statement

on Sunday, 23rd June. The intervention by the EMPD quickly resulted in protests where roads were blocked with rocks and burning tyres, according to the police. “The EMPD was able to bring the situation under control and arrested five men suspected to be the masterminds behind the land invasion and public violence,” Kgasago explained. The suspects aged between 25 and 60 have been detained at Etwatwa police station and expected to appear before the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Rand Water informs Ekurhuleni Benoni teacher shares her of reduced water supply experience in the United States

The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents in Ekurhuleni to utilise water sparingly as water supply to customers is anticipated to be reduced from 24 to 27 June. This is as a result of the Rand Water, which supplies the City with water, conducting valve installation work for the duration of the period on the main supply pipeline. “Rand Water has notified the City of Ekurhuleni of the planned reduced water supply during the above-mentioned period and have assured us that they will keep their bulk supply reservoirs to a maximum capacity to minimise water supply interruptions,” MMC for Water and Energy, Tiisetso Nketle. “We do, however, anticipate low water pressure to no water in some areas for the

duration of the Rand Water reduced water supply and low pressure over the next week while the system recovers,” she continued. As such, residents and businesses, are cautioned to conserve water and implement immediate water saving measures to avoid complete depletion of supply. Technicians will closely monitor water levels in the reservoirs and water tankers will be provided in the areas with no water supply. Areas with direct feeds from Rand Water and those in high-lying areas may be affected adversely and be will among the areas that will be prioritised. Other measures to be implemented by the City of Ekurhuleni include securing the supply by filling the reservoirs – this may involve closing off supply between 22:00 and 05:00 over the weekend in some areas. Pressure management and throttling the supply will also be implemented where necessary. MMC Nketle also wishes to distance the City from statements attributed to the City made on various media platforms regarding the situation.

So vêr hy loop hoor ek hom brom. Toe weet ek klaar: Hier kom DRAMA. Hy kom terug met ‘n bottel parafien. Hy gooi so ‘n groot klomp in en staan vinnig terug.

Over the past two decades, Participate Learning has given hundreds of South African teachers the opportunity to teach and live in the United States. For positions starting in August 2019, there are 12 South African teachers preparing to come. Participate Learning is now recruiting for positions that begin in August 2020. The program’s International Recruitment Manager, Jeff Seaby, encourages teachers of all ages to consider applying, “teachers have the opportunity to integrate into new communities and schools, where they will develop both professionally and personally, while also acting as cultural ambassadors of their country”. The participating teachers learn from, and share their own skill sets with their American colleagues, while imparting lessons about Africa, and particularly South African culture, to American students.

Deidre Duvenage, a 42-year-old teacher from Benoni who is currently teaching kindergarten at Baucom Elementary in North Carolina, can vow for the heartwarming experience Participate Learning offers. “Seeing the smiles on your student’s face when they learn that they are in an international teacher’s class and that they are going to learn about your country is very rewarding. I call my students the Safari kids and I taught them all about our beautiful country and animals”, Ms. Duvenage states. Plus, the impact of this cultural exchange goes further than just the classroom, as Deidre pleasantly receives messages and pictures from the kid´s parents showing her their request for stuffed animals from South Africa, or asking to find videos about South Africa so they can learn more. “It’s awesome to hear of all this and think that I opened up that door to this child”, says Deidre. Over the past 30 years, more than 300 teachers from all over South Africa have participated in the program. Typically interviews are held in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Deidre encourages her countrymen to try this life changing experience: “even with my 19 years’ experience, I did feel like a first year teacher during the first 6 months of work. This was mainly attributed to being unfamiliar with the new teaching methods, the US curriculum and various technologies used at the schools. But Participate Learning really takes care of their teachers, from when you sign on until you say goodbye at the end of your term, making the adaptation easier.”

Mense, toe is daar vlamme, sommer so ligte ontploffing. Ek skrik my lam, en Gysie staan doodstil. Ten minste, hy het my kom leer. Gysie het in die kamer weggekruip. Tip- Lees die instruksies, vra raad, en pasop dat jy nie jou hare afskroei nie.

10 LALIGA STARS SET TO LIGHT UP THE 2019 COPA AMERICA Real Madrid fans will be eager to see their new defender Militao in action for Brazil, with the 21-year-old’s athleticism and understanding of the game impressing hugely at former club Porto. The Sao Paolo native, who’ll move to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer for a fee reported to be around €50 million, should bolster an already-packed Brazil defence. 4. Arthur Melo [Barcelona and Brazil] Arthur’s first LaLiga campaign could not have gone much better, with the intelligent playmaker settling in quickly at the Camp Nou and playing a key role in their LaLiga title win. Having drawn comparisons to Barça and Spain legend Xavi Hernandez – who said that Arthur could “mark an era at Barcelona” – for his composure on the ball and ball-playing abilities, Arthur will be a mainstay in the Brazilian midfield for many years to come.

With the latest instalment of the historic tournament having kicked off this past Friday in Sao Paolo, here are 10 LaLiga stars who are set to showcase the best that Spanish football has to offer. This year’s tournament will see 25 players from LaLiga compete for the continental title, more than from any other European competition. 1. Lionel Messi [Barcelona and Argentina] Barcelona and Argentina captain Messi will be aiming for his first trophy with his country, having had a stellar personal 2018/19 campaign when he scored 36 goals in 34 games on the way to a record-

breaking 10th career LaLiga Santander title. The man to watch, as always. 2. Giovanni Lo Celso [Real Betis and Argentina] Creative midfielder Lo Celso was a revelation on loan at Real Betis from Paris Saint Germain last season, with nine goals and five assists in 32 LaLiga games for the always entertaining side from Seville. The Argentine, who made his transfer permanent in April, is no doubt a future star of the world game and will be key in Argentina’s quest for a first Copa America title in over 25 years. 3. Eder Militao [Real Madrid and Brazil]

5. Santiago Arias [Atletico de Madrid and Colombia] Attack-minded right-back Arias had an impressive first year in LaLiga with Atletico de Madrid. The man from Medellin is highly favoured by Diego Simeone and also Colombian coach Carlos Queiroz; Arias has picked up almost 50 senior caps since making his international debut back in 2013. 6. Fede Valverde [Real Madrid and Uruguay] Rangy and composed midfielder Valverde was a real bright spot amid a difficult campaign for Real Madrid last season, establishing himself as an important squad member at the Bernabeu despite being just 20 years old. The Montevideo native, who started his career at Peñarol before moving to the Spanish capital in 2016, has cemented his place in the na-

tional squad since scoring on his debut against Paraguay in 2017. 7. Maxi Gomez [RC Celta and Uruguay] It was not always easy as Celta battled relegation last year, but bullish centreforward Gomez continued his development with a hugely important 13 goals in 35 LaLiga Santander games. Strong, decisive and deadly in the air, the Uruguayan is the latest in a long line of world-class strikers to play for La Celeste. 8. Gaku Shibasaki [Getafe and Japan] Japan’s guest appearance means more time in the spotlight for Getafe’s creative midfielder Shibasaki, who has famously scored iconic goals against both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Gaku, who made the move to Europa League candidates Getafe from CD Tenerife in 2017, will provide the creative spark in the Japanese midfield in Group C where they face Uruguay, Ecuador and Chile. 9. Guillermo Maripan [Alaves and Chile] 25-year-old Alaves centre-half Maripan was a rock at the back for LaLiga surprise package Alaves last season, when the Basque side’s success was based on team organisation and solid defence. The Santiago-born centre-back, who started out at Universidad Catolica, will be looking to take the step up to widespread international recognition this summer. 10. Roberto Rosales [Venezuela and Espanyol] Former Malaga right-back Rosales was immense in Espanyol’s late season surge, hitting a vital goal on the final day as the Catalans clinched Europa League football next year. He’ll be key for the Vino Tinto down the right flank.
