Laticia Jansen: School blamed as pupil, 15, raped and burned to death
By: News24 reporter
This week AfriForum will address a second letter to Gauteng premier David Makhura, in which the civil rights organisation will once again voice its discontent over the ongoing chaos at several Gauteng schools as a result of unplaced or incorrectly placed learners. Several schools had to close their doors on 20 January 2020 out of fear after days of protest marches by unhappy and frustrated parents. This situation unfolded while Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Education in Gauteng, continues to pretend that his province’s schools aren’t experiencing any problems. AfriForum has been contacted repeatedly by disheartened parents who say they don’t get any support from the Gauteng Department of Education. tame TIMES learned that Carien Bloem, Manager for Education at AfriForum said that they are already in the second week of the first term and there is still unhappiness among parents and schools as a direct result of the online registration and placement system. She argues that our society can’t have a situation where schools have to close their doors because of chaos caused by the Gauteng Department of Education. tame TIMES will keep readers updated with more information regarding this case
The Gauteng Department of Education says it is saddened by yet another death of a pupil. Laticia Princes Jansen, 15, was allegedly stabbed, raped and burned to death on Wednesday and was found in a nearby bush in Elsburg, Germiston, on Friday, 24 January. Jansen was in Grade 9 at Graceland Education Centre. “According to information at our disposal, Laticia didn’t come back home from school. Subsequently, the grandmother panicked and started checking in the neighbourhood, but to no avail. The grandmother couldn’t sleep. The next morning, on Thursday, 23 January 2020, she reported her miss-
ing at the police station, but was informed to bring a photograph of a child. Unfortunately, no action was taken,” the department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona said in a statement on Sunday. Mabona said that, when Laticia’s grandmother reported to the school, it was confirmed to her that she had been absent on the day. Mabona said it was concerning that the school had failed to assist the concerned grandmother. After the grandmother mobilised members of the community, a search took place on Friday, resulting in the discovery of her burnt body in the bushes. “We are informed that Laticia and a
Catching up with Tevin Blignaut we have to do is reach out and grab it. Infact, the mission is made by possible by the fulfilment of the vision. The concepts of peace, love, joy and righteousness will be the result of this message. And that is the motivation behind the brand of @Tevinthespeaker. 2. Who is your target audience? The target audience is anyone who is willing to listen - because the message is for everyone. But the primary focus is on my generation and generations that are to come.

group of learners from Dukathole in Germiston, were on Wednesday, 22 January 2020, left behind by the departmental scholar transport and unfortunately had to turn back home. It seems Laticia was left behind by her peers while walking back home, apparently after complaining about a heavy school bag, which she was trying to fix. Accordingly, that was the last time she was seen by her peers,” Mabona said. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the family to convey his condolence. He assured them that, if the school had acted in bad faith, he would act decisively. “It is alleged that the scholar transport started a tendency of departing earlier than scheduled, as a result leaving many learners behind, which is a serious concern for us. We will investigate the circumstances surrounding this allegation. We have visited the family to convey our sincere condolences this afternoon, 26 January 2020,” Lesufi said. The department’s psycho-social team is expected to visit the school on Monday to offer counselling to the community and family.
tame Times had the privilege to meet with Tevin Blignaut, a motivational speaker from Roodepoort with a vision to promote hope for young and old in South Africa. We spoke to Tevin to understand his ambition behind coaching and inspiration to help equip his target audience. 1. What is the motivation behind your initiative? The vision of @Tevinthespeaker is to discuss the concept of purpose and the Kingdom message, all around the world, so that people understand it and live it. My mission is world peace through the idea of heaven on earth. Now, this may seem far fetched but the honest truth is that this vision and mission is so close, that all
3. How do you plan your daily, weekly and monthly themes such as key lessons, success inspiration and dream coaching I have developed a plan of action model that is centered around the book release of that year. As you may know, the book I have written and will be released at the end of February, is centered on purpose. So, my theme for 2020 is purpose. Next year, 2021, the theme will be introducing the Kingdom concept – which is the book I will be writing this year. 4. What challenges do you face as a motivational coach? Time is definitely a challenge. You would think that since this is my work – I would have more time on my hands. But this is not the case, especially because of the detail I have to go into to be able to explain the topics so that everyone can understand them. This means I have to study – ALL THE TIME! Especially in cases where I have been invited to speak on a specific topic, I study new information and prepare it in such a way that it connects with people the first time they hear it. This is probably my greatest challenge.
5. Any people that have helped you reach this journey? My mastermind. Check out the series on YouTube: Rediscovering the secrets to success, concerning this topic. My mastermind is filled with people who are purpose driven and Kingdom orientated. And so, the purpose and Kingdom message is all I hear. So, I am fed by it – we live it! My brothers and more especially my wife – if you spend just a moment with them – your perspectives on a lot of things will change. 6. Define yourself as a leader that desires to lead others in our society? I definitely consider myself as a leader. And I encourage everyone around me, to feel that way about themselves as well. We are all leaders. We are all meant for greatness – so I would never allow myself to think that my leadership is greater than the next person. Because who knows who you’d be in the next five years or even in the next year? But what I do know is I have a message that will bring you into your greatest point of leadership. 7. How can you inspire men and women out there to not give up on themselves or their dream? You must discover and understand the concept of purpose. Please do not chase success and the life of successful people. Pursue your purpose and you will naturally become successful. This is why you have to get my book! Always remember this: success is the result of purpose. And purpose only needs what you already have.

Future stars go forever faster at PUMA School of Speed #2
The PUMA School of Speed #2 saw track and field #FutureStars follow in the footsteps of Usain Bolt as they pushed their limits at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium on Saturday, 25 January 2020. Headed by Bolt, the PUMA School of Speed is a national series of five track and field meets that was launched in 2016 with the goal of identifying exceptional young South African athletes who believe that their future is #ForeverFaster. The PUMA School of Speed #2 saw junior track and field #FutureStars between the ages of 14-19 compete in long and high jump, the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, long jump and hurdles. The Boys U17 400m was dominated by Lythe Pillay (Benoni) from King Edward VII School. “The PUMA School of Speed is a good platform for athletes to showcase their talent. It means a lot to come out on top today. It shows that I am
doing a lot right, but there is still work to be done. So it’s back to the drawing board. My advice to other athletes is to have fun. Don’t buckle under pressure. I always tell myself that I am here to have fun. Whether you finish first or last, if you had fun it’s a win at the end of the day.” Pillay crossed the finish line in 48.23 seconds. Wilco Geldenhuys came in 2nd, while Keletso Seoposengwe finished 3rd. Jonathan de Klerk (Alberton Christian Academy) claimed gold in the Boys U19 100m in 10.58 seconds. “The PUMA School of Speed is awesome,” says de Klerk. “This is the second time that I participate. I didn’t do so well last year. I’ve been improving my time, so I thought that now is a good time to take part. Coming first is amazing. My improvement from last year is just crazy. My advice to other athletes is to train hard and push through the pain.” Melvin Miya came in 2nd, while Phumzile Mqolo finished 3rd.
Nikiwe Mongwe (Ekurhuleni East TVET College / Springs) secured victory in the Girls U19 100m in 12.60 seconds. “I entered because I saw the nice prizes that were up for grabs and I wanted competition. I wanted to see where I am at in sport. The PUMA School of Speed is amazing. The athletes have really got their game on. Coming first means a lot. It means that I have potential to go to SA Champs and win.” Mariska Jonker came in 2nd, while Jenna Stolz finished 3rd. Chinique Brown (Pietersburg High School Polokwane) was on fire in the Girls U19 200m. “This is the first time that I take part in the PUMA School of Speed. A friend told me about the event, so I decided to come have a look. I came second in the 400m. It feels good to come first in the 200m.” Nikiwe Mongwe came in 2nd, while Christina van der Merwe finished 3rd. Ivan Geldenhuys (Namibia) took top honors in the Boys U19 400m in a time of 47.64 seconds. “I’ve travelled a long
way. I am here to study at TUKS. I entered because there are always new experiences and new athletes to challenge you and improve your talent. I love the event. There’s nice competition, it’s well organized and the people are very nice.” Jack Judds came in 2nd, while Josua Gouws finished 3rd. Amy Naude (Ashton International College / Ballito) secured the top spot on the podium in the Girls U19 400m in a time of 55.93 seconds. “I love the PUMA School of Speed,” says Naude. “The atmosphere is just amazing. We don’t often get to experience this. I’ve participated too many times to count. Coming first in the finals means a lot to me. It takes a lot of work. Balance is important. Balance your social life, school work and athletics. And you need to listen to your coach.” Chinique Brown came in 2nd, while Lene van Heerden finished 3rd.
