Macsteel and SHINE makes stories come to life in Reiger Park
17 September WeekWeek 38 Volume 09, 232019, May 2017, 21
Recognising that literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning last week, Macsteel and SHINE celebrated International Literacy Day at Goede Hoop Primary in Reiger Park, Gauteng. For over 40 years, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has been celebrating International Literacy Day by reminding the international community of the importance of literacy, which remains one of the biggest challenges faced by the South African education system. Macsteel has joined forces with SHINE, an organisation aiming to drastically improve the quality of the education system in our country, to stimulate the learners’ creative thinking by reading to them and dressing up as characters from the books that are read to them to make the stories come to life.
SHINE has committed to helping learners in grade 2 and 3 with their reading and writing skills. “We want to make reading fun and exciting and we want the learners in our schools to embrace reading. We would also want to make learners aware of the importance of reading and the effect it has on their school careers,” says Michael Zietsman, Director, SHINE. SHINE has committed to partner with educators and learners in four primary schools in Reiger Park. Twice a week, in what is referred to as the Shine Literacy Hour, a team of volunteers provides specialised help to learners in these schools to develop their reading and writing skills. The Shine Literacy Literacy Hour is an early intervention programme, giving support in reading, writing and language to learners in grades 2 and 3, setting them up for a greater chance at success.

“Literacy is the absolute foundation of education and Macsteel is proud to support SHINE. We will continue to dedicate our time to programmes like these which make a tangible difference in the children’s lives and provide them with the knowledge and skills that will help them create a better future for themselves,” says Kim Allan, Macsteel’s Group Corporate Social Responsibility Manager. “Our aim in the next few years is to launch the SHINE Programme in more schools and to significantly grow our volunteer base as there are many more learners who will benefit from additional help in the area of literacy which will significantly change the direction of these learner’s school careers,” concludes Zietsman.

Boksburg factory engulfed in flames
RIP Tyrone Lessing On Friday, 13th September, tame TIMES was at the memorial of Tyrone Lessing who was laid to rest at the KARDIA CHURCH in Suideroord, Johannesburg South. The body of Tyron Lessing has been discovered on Friday afternoon, 6 September, 14-days after his fatal car accident, just metres away from the scene in Alberton. The 27-year-old Tyrone Lessing was reported missing after his family could not find his body at the accident scene in the Mayberry Park area on 24 August. Family and friends said goodbye to Tyrone at his memorial. Tyrone will be remembered by many.
tame TIMES learned that firefighters battled a large fire at a candle factory in Anderbolt, Boksburg. The structure reportedly caught fire on Friday afternoon, 13 September but the cause is not yet known. Rubber and plastic burning has reportedly been made worse by windy condi-
tions, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze using water. Although the initial factory fire was contained, there are reports of a truck on fire as other workshops in the vicinity are still ablaze. No injuries have been reported.

Marula trees planted to celebrate arbor day and preserve environment
Four-hundred marula and apple leaf trees have been planted in Etwatwa and Barcelona since the beginning of September to kick-start the national Arbor Month and to adorn barren spaces with indigenous trees. The City of Ekurhuleni in partnership with Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have committed to embark on a drive to plant 1600 trees across the City of Ekurhuleni during September in areas such as Alra Park, Duduza, Winnie Mandela in Tembisa, and Tokoza. On Friday, 7 September, Grade six learners from Silindokuhle Primary School and the community members of Barcelona in the Benoni area, joined hands with the government officials to plant the marula tree at the Barcelona multi-purpose park. The marula tree is the official tree for the 2019 Arbor Month celebrations.
“Trees are a source of life. They provide us with oxygen and a shade on a sunny day. Trees also serve as a shield during stormy seasons, and they prevent soil erosion. It is therefore very important for us to continue planting as many trees as possible and to educate each other about the significance of having trees in our environment. We call on the members of the community to care for the trees, not to cut them but to nurture them,” said Ekurhuleni’s Head of Department for Environment Resources and Waste Management Services Faith Mabindisa. Furthermore, Arbor Day celebration concept seeks to highlight the opportunity for sustainable environmental, social and economic development, community participation, poverty alleviation and job creation in forestry, thereby contributing towards growth, development and a better life for all.

Midvaal v Soweto Championships Written by Candice Gracie
Riders gathered from around Gauteng to compete head-to-head for the title of Midvaal vs Soweto Champion 2019. ArkStar Kidz Club, along with Enos Mafokate Soweto Riding Centre partnered together to host a trilogy of events for the year, to raise funds for and awareness of the sport of equestrianism. Each event saw in attendance of nothing less than 400 guests to enjoy horse riding competitions in the show jumping and showing arena, live music on stage and all the markets had to offer.
The finale started with the show jumping classes at a prompt start of 09:00am, with the show jumping juniors showing off their newly learnt skills of getting their large and loyal steeds over the poles on the ground. Great cheers were given when riders as young as 4 years-old made it through the course, with helmets and body parts all in place. The course has been carefully built by well-known course builder Carlos Ferreira, who made sure that the finale was one to remember. Sharp turns, high
oxers and challenging double-backs made sure the riders in the 80cm Two-Phase, 90cm Competition & 1m Championship were thoroughly tested. Zinzi Nahlapo, from the Enos Mafokate yard, riding Divided Highway proved to be the one to beat on the day, walking away with the tile of Midvaal vs Soweto Champion. Well done Zinzi! Prizes, sponsored from a wide variety of generous suppliers to The IEA Elite, ArkStar Kidz Club & Enos Mafokate Equestrian Club of Soweto were handed out by Mr Enos Mafokate & Show Jumping Judge, Stephanie Guest. The showing arena rang the first bell a little after 09:00am as well, with the dashing rider and horse combinations presenting themselves in tip-top condition to much-loved judge, Diane Lutge, who was more than eager to share her vast knowledge in the field of showing and show riding with the athletes. Beautiful horses were shown, with Meggan Boyd from The IEA Elite taking the prize for Best Turned Out, showing the elegant Elite Miss Steele. Esmerelda Zeilinga’s mare, Zuleika, caught everybody’s eyes with her almost black coat, huge eyes, beautiful grace and confirmation. She most certainly deserved the 1st place rosette for In-Hand Utility as she pranced through the Alice in Wonderland utility course, carefully laid out by Meggan Boyd. The canine lovers were treated to a demonstration by Iryna Rauner from Your Dog & Me. Dogs and their owners were encouraged to join in the agility doggy course and compete for one of the amazing prizes up for grabs from Montego Pet Nutrition & Taneil Arkner. I think there were one or two owners that deserved a treat too for great behaviour. The stage, managed by Mr & Mrs Thabethe from Sosibo Projects & Events, was alive with sound and movement in the afternoon, keeping guests entertained well after the riding classes were finished. Leon Horn & Vikki Du Preez, BlackOrkid, Sanna Sing & Gill and Street Jupiter made certain that
nobody left before 5pm. South Africa is truly blessed with amazing local talent! Great vendors, delicious foods, icy drinks and interesting craft stalls were strategically placed all around the yard to ensure the right atmosphere for a perfect day out in the country was created. Kiddies were in heaven as they could ride ponies and in the Elite Express train, jump on the jumping castle and trampoline and run to and from the candyfloss machine all day long. One thing is for sure, they slept the best out of us all on Sunday evening. The purpose of these events was to raise funds, create awareness and build a bond between two equestrian NPO’s that openly give back to the sport of equestrianism. This is a bond that will hopefully attract more awareness of the endless possibilities that the equestrian field has to offer to the youth. Not just the elite youths, but, with the help of ArkStar Kidz Club & Enos Mafokate Equestrian Club of Soweto, all youths that share the same passion, the same desire and the same belief that horses are truly the greatest creatures on earth! That, with horses, we can raise strong, kind, dedicated and motivated children and guide them in following their dreams and aspirations to one day becoming South Africa’s next Olympic hopefuls. Just as Mr Enos Mafokate did, as the first black man to ever represent Africa at the Olympics in 1992. A big round of applause to the committee, chaired by Mrs Taneil Arkner, owner and founder of The IEA Elite, event managed by Candice Gracie & Meggan Boyd and supported by a whole host of names, for an exceptional year in Equestrian Development in Gauteng.
