CRIME HOTSPOTS IN BOKSBURG AND BENONI

As we move towards the Festive season there is traditionally a spike in crime and Fidelity ADT is constantly on the lookout for danger areas for motorists. This week a disturbing trend has been picked up in drive through retail outlets in the Boksburg and Benoni areas. Armed suspects are cornering motorists as they leave the drive thru. “We have had five incidents this week alone,” says Milly Barnard, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT. Intersections or robots can be notorious for smash-and-grab incidents so to avoid becoming a victim remember: • Criminals are usually after valuable items such as handbags, laptops, shopping bags, gym bags and cell phones. The most impor-

tant thing is to never put these items on a seat or on the floor of your car where they are visible to criminals. The boot is always preferred. • Remember to lock all doors and close windows • Avoid getting into discussions with street vendors • Constantly be aware of your surroundings. • Do not be distracted at a robot by talking on your phone. • Consider fitting your windows with a polycarb film. These can be tinted so that no one can see into the car, while also preventing the windows from shattering. • Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to escape if you need to. • Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious looking characters and be wary of people standing at intersections.

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE RAPE OF A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD MINOR

On 5 November 2019, an eighteenyear-old male suspect was arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Specialised Task Team in connection with the alleged rape of a fourteen-year-old female minor. The minor was reported missing by her mother at the Kempton Park Police Station on the evening of Monday, 4 November, after she had failed to meet her at the Festival Mall in Kempton Park, after school. The girl’s mother opened a case of a ‘missing minor’ at the Kempton Park Police Station. The EMPD Specialised Task Team subsequently undertook an operation to search for the missing minor in the Kempton Park area. They found the girl near the Kempton Park railway line on the following day. With the information gathered from the minor, the EMPD of-

ficers were able to successfully locate the alleged rapist and arrest him. The rape is alleged to have occurred around the railway line where the minor was found and again at the Merry Quarters SAPS Barracks in Kempton Park. The accused rapist is the son of a Senior South African Police Service Official who is currently posted at the Kempton Park Police Station. A case of statutory rape and abduction has been opened at the Germiston Police Station, to prevent any possible interference in the case by the suspect’s mother. The minor has been taken to the Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston where she will be receiving counseling and a sexual assault forensic exam. Further details surrounding the case will be shared with the public as they become available.

2020 school placements: AfriForum assists schools and parents

AfriForum describes the 2020 school placement process as chaotic bureaucratic floundering. The organisation has been flooded with complaints the past two weeks from parents who still haven’t received SMS notifications with offers for the placement of their children in schools for the 2020 school year. Parents are unhappy and stressed because the process has been drawn out and taking unnecessarily long, creating immense uncertainty for parents and learners. Schools have also been struggling to match their placement lists with those given to them by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), due to the fact that the lists provided by the GDE differ substantially from the schools’ lists. AfriForum has already assisted several schools in this regard. The online registration system, as well as the placement process, has been plagued by problems which were predicted by AfriForum as early as May this year. The organisation approached the GDE about the problems back then. Their warnings however fell on deaf ears and it has now reached a stage where Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Education in Gauteng, and the GDE are continuously apologising for the problems, instead of admitting that the system is a failure and allowing schools to do their own admissions as they did in the past. During an emergency press conference on Monday, the GDE announced that the placement process will yet again be extended to 30 November 2019. Parents who still haven’t received messages with placement information should receive notifications within the next month. According to the GDE, placements were made on the following premises: * Learners were first placed in the school closest to their home address. * If a school still had capacity, children with siblings in the school were placed there. * Thereafter learners were placed whose parents’ work address is closest to the school. * Then learners living within a 30 km ra-

dius from the school were placed. * Finally, learners who live outside a 30 km radius from the school were placed. If parents applied for placement at Primary School X, it would mean that the children who live closest to the school would have been placed first. If the school then still had capacity, children with siblings in the school would be placed. If Primary School X then still had space, children with parents working closest to the school would be placed there, and so forth. “It is very unfair that parents and learners are placed under this much stress by the registration and placement process. Lesufi boasts about the system being without problems, when in fact it hasn’t been successful for the past four years,” says Carien Bloem, Manager of Education at AfriForum. “AfriForum will continue to support schools and school governing bodies in their battle to solve placement problems before the start of the 2020 school year,” she says. Measures will also be explored to avoid similar chaos with placements for the 2021 school year The GDE asked parents to use the following channels to report any problems relating to the placement process: 1. An appeal form should be downloaded from www.gdeadmissions.gov.za, completed and returned to admissions. Hotline.@gauteng.gov.za. 2. Parents can also phone the call centre at 0800 000 789 or send an email to gdeinfo@gauteng.gov.za or visit their nearest district office. “AfriForum encourages parents to continuously stay in contact with the school of their choice for confirmation on whether their children are on the school’s placement list – even if they haven’t received an SMS yet,” says Bloem. AfriForum wants to know about cases where the GDE fails to assist parents with their problems: send an email to onderwys@afriforum.co.za.

Tommy triumphs in “Africa’s Major”

Tommy Fleetwood waited 22 months for a win, and when it came it was big. The Englishman won the richest firstplace cheque on the European Tour this week of US$2.5 million with his playoff victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player at the Gary Player Country Club on Sunday.

He did so with a final round of 65 including three eagles, and then beat Sweden’s Marcus Kinhult on the first extra hole of a playoff after both finished tied for the lead on 12 under par. “Obviously I guess being a golfer these days, you have a chance at a young age to set your family up for life,” he said of the

prize money. But the victory was worth a whole lot more to him. “I’m just very proud of that, really, and everybody that goes on the journey with you constantly. It’s just really, really cool when you win a tournament. It really is.” Fleetwood started the final round six shots back of the leader, South Africa’s

Zander Lombard. Louis Oosthuizen was also in the hunt at only one shot off the lead at the start of the final round. But as both the South Africans faltered – with Oosthuizen finishing tied sixth and Lombard tied eighth – that opened the door for Fleetwood and Kinhult. Fleetwood’s three eagles at holes nine, 10 and 14 took him through the field. And it was his third eagle on the par-five 14th that was indeed the #StrokeofGenius this tournament recognizes as he hit a three wood into the narrow green and to within 10 feet of the hole. Kinhult pushed his way to the fore with a 68 that started with three straight birdies. And with Fleetwood in the clubhouse on 12 under, the Swede held his nerve and holed a par putt on 18 to force the playoff. But playing the 18th again, it was Fleetwood’s par to Kinhult’s bogey that decided the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge. “You stand over those putts, you never know what’s going to happen. You just have to stand up and hit them,” Fleetwood said of his winning putt. It was Fleetwood’s second victory on the Rolex Series, and one that lifted him into second place on the Race to Dubai rankings going into the season finale, the DP World Tour Championship next week and where he’ll attempt to be crowned the European Tour’s number one for the second time in his career. “It’s an absolute privilege to get to the last event with a chance of winning The Race to Dubai. It’s an amazing thing to have in your career and it’s one of the things I’m most proud of.”

Janine du Plessis linked with Lions move WE STRIVE TO WORK HARDER AND SMARTER NuDebt is a thriving, preferred debt collection and payment solutions company in South Africa.

Veteran prop Jannie du Plessis is reportedly set for a stunning return to South Africa to play for the Lions in Super Rugby. The 37-year-old prop has been playing for French club Montpellier since 2015, but on Sunday Afrikaans newspaper Rapport reported that Du Plessis is set for a homecoming in 2020.

According to the report, the Lions are keen to secure the services of Du Plessis and Carlu Sadie in an attempt to strengthen the team’s front row stocks ahead of next year’s Super Rugby campaign. It is understood negotiations between all parties involved are well underway and Du Plessis is now just waiting for approval from Montpellier before his return is

made official. Sadie, who had joined the Lions on a loan deal for the 2019 Super Rugby season before going back to Western Province for the recent Currie Cup tournament, is also believed to be close to a more permanent move to Ellis Park.
