DA petitions parliament for a police station in Wattville
03
Jika with Mi Casa in celebration of Sun City’s Big 40
BY HASEENA ISMAEL MP – BENONI CONSTITUENCY HEAD
Children are unable to walk to school or enjoy afterschool activities, and women constantly have to watch over their shoulders in case they are being followed. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has submitted a petition to parliament, calling on Police Minister, Bheki Cele to establish a police station in Wattville to enhance safety and police visibility for residents. Currently, victims of crime have to travel to the neighbouring Actonville Police Station six kilometers away for assistance. Resources at the Actonville police station are severely strained as it serves 4000 households, 566 municipal flats, businesses and five large informal settlements located in Watville and Actonville. Criminal activity has become rife in these communities over the past few years. Both Actonville and Watville and surrounding areas are being severely affected by crime, including business murder and robbery, drug smuggling, human trafficking, rape and prostitution. Adult women, young girls and children are most affected by the scourge of drugs and other types of crime. Children are unable to walk to school or enjoy after-school activities, and women constantly have to watch over their shoulders in case they are being followed. Many of the residents have written to the DA PR Councillor Jordan Lotriet, expressing their concern about constantly having to live in fear. The DA appeals to Minister Cele to urgently establish a police station in Watville to make residents’ lives safer.

Age is just a number
A reader shares her opinion on interracial dating In the day and age that we are currently living in interracial relationships have become more common. Love flourishes between blacks and coloureds, coloureds and whites or whites and blacks. Interracial relationships are something so beautiful to experience. It takes a multitude of different races and creeds to come together to become one nation. An interracial relationship binds together different norms, values, traditions and cultures. To experience this type of relationship can be such and amazing experience. It gives you as an individual the platform to connect with different traditions and cultures, on a level you never thought could ever be possible. In the century we are living in, although interracial relationships have become so common amongst our people, there will always be the people that will never accept this change. These people will never accept happiness in its purest form, where you only look at the heart and not at the colour of your skin. They will never accept growth in
the highest form, where we see how interracial relationships takes is to the next level of growth in our personal lives. They will never accept understanding, where we acknowledge that love does not first ask what the colour of your skin is. Why do interracial couples still find themselves on the receiving end of stares, and gossip when they are simply expressing the love they have for each other to the world? What if you were in that situation? Would you still feel the need for everyone to throw around their opinion about your own love story ? It is important for family and friends of the couple to accept their love and find a common ground, because you are not losing your family member, but rather gaining one. Change is difficult, and for an interracial couple to work through it to delve deeper in their their love, is something so breathtaking and beautiful. Just remember, love knows no race, it is blind, it is just society that tries to give it eyes.
If you could turn back the clock, what would you do differently? I attended a high school reunion recently with friends that I haven’t seen in over 30 years, and noticed how much older most of them looked. Aging happens to every one of us, and is one of life’s natural phenomenon. Our life choices will determine whether we age rapidly or not. The dangerous practice of spending too much time in the sun, is one of the leading causes of tissue damage to the face and body, including activating cancer cells. Drinking excess alcohol will certainly speed up the aging process , and will also effect your liver. Scientists have confirmed that the testosterone levels of older men will decline, and take much longer to normalize after drinking too much alcohol compared to younger men. Smoking cigarettes is also another addictive habit that most older folks picked up while they where teenagers. These dangerous chemicals will affect your lungs and other organs. The different foods that are high in saturated fats, sugar and sodium are also contributing factors. Stress together with a sedentary lifestyle, does play a part in the aging process. Getting older is inevitable, but we can slow down “Father Time” by implementing the following: Spending as little time as possible in the sun. Abstaining from alcohol, cigarettes and all forms of drugs. Eating smaller, healthier meals consisting
of low GI carbohydrates, lean protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals and drinking plenty water. Doing weight training at least 3 times weekly, and learning to manage stress will also help. CRIME HOTSPOTS IDENTIFIED
As we move towards the Festive season there is traditionally a spike in crime and Fidelity ADT is constantly on the lookout for danger areas for motorists. This week a disturbing trend has been picked up in drive through retail outlets in the Boksburg and Benoni areas. Armed suspects are cornering motorists as they leave the drive thru. “We have had five incidents this week alone,” says Milly Barnard, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT. Intersections or robots can be notorious for smash-and-grab incidents so to avoid becoming a victim remember: • Criminals are usually after valuable items such as handbags, laptops, shopping bags, gym bags and cell phones. The most important thing is to never put these
items on a seat or on the floor of your car where they are visible to criminals. The boot is always preferred. • Remember to lock all doors and close windows • Avoid getting into discussions with street vendors • Constantly be aware of your surroundings. • Do not be distracted at a robot by talking on your phone. • Consider fitting your windows with a polycarb film. These can be tinted so that no one can see into the car, while also preventing the windows from shattering. • Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to escape if you need to. • Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious looking characters and be wary of people standing at intersections.
SUSPECT ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE RAPE OF A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD MINOR
On 5 November 2019, an eighteenyear-old male suspect was arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Specialised Task Team in connection with the alleged rape of a fourteen-year-old female minor. The minor was reported missing by her mother at the Kempton Park Police Station on the evening of Monday, 4 November, after she had failed to meet her at the Festival Mall in Kempton Park, after school. The girl’s mother opened a case of a ‘missing minor’ at the Kempton Park Police Station. The EMPD Specialised Task Team subsequently undertook an operation to search for the missing minor in the Kempton Park area. They found the girl near the Kempton Park railway line on the following day. With the information gathered from the minor, the EMPD
officers were able to successfully locate the alleged rapist and arrest him. The rape is alleged to have occurred around the railway line where the minor was found and again at the Merry Quarters SAPS Barracks in Kempton Park. The accused rapist is the son of a Senior South African Police Service Official who is currently posted at the Kempton Park Police Station. A case of statutory rape and abduction has been opened at the Germiston Police Station, to prevent any possible interference in the case by the suspect’s mother. The minor has been taken to the Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston where she will be receiving counseling and a sexual assault forensic exam. Further details surrounding the case will be shared with the public as they become available.

BE CAREFUL OF SCAMMERS Inspiring youth to make POSING AS CITY OFFICIALS a career out of football
The festive season is approaching and many scammers are sharpening their tricky ways to rob people of their belongings, particularly money. As such, the City continues to caution its residents of the scammers who are already out there, ready to trick people into giving them money under the pretext that they are City of Ekurhuleni employees. Recently, the City experienced a ransomware attack, which is a malicious software that cybercriminals can use to either block or threaten to publish your data unless a sum of money or ransom is paid. The most common way ransomware enters corporate networks is through
email, scammers often include mischievous links or attachments in emails that look harmless. Since the beginning of the year, the City has been inundated with complaints from people who have been scammed of their monies by people pretending to be municipal officials. Many victims were made to believe that they won a tender to supply the City with 240L waste wheelie bins. Therefore, they were lured into depositing large amounts of money into a bank account that was purported to belong to the City. Meanwhile other residents had strangers walking into their premises posing as City officials who monitor water or electricity meter boxes and ultimately robbed them.
SAPS takes time to educate children about safety Learners from Tom and Jerry Nursery School and Aftercare in Primrose East, and Little Shine Day Care in Delport informal settlement, received a special visit recently. Officers from the Primrose Police Station and members of the Primrose SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk visited the schools to teach the children about a number of crimes that affect children and what steps to take should they ever be a victim of
crime. “At both schools the learners were taught an easy way to remember the Child Line number,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. The children were entertained during the visit by an appearance by Mr Monkey. “We hope to visit more schools to sensitise our children about crime and how to report it,” said Maome.

Joburg goodbye after three years as first citizen Had the DA secured the majority of votes in the 2016 local government elections, Herman Mashaba would not have survived even a year in office. This is how the outgoing Johannesburg mayor summed up his attitude towards the DA after his three years at the helm of the country’s largest economic hub. Mashaba resigned both as DA member and mayor of Joburg last month after a tumultuous tenure running the city. “I will be a free man,” a jovial Mashaba declared in an interview with Sowetan at his office in Braamfontein. Mashaba’s term as mayor has been punctuated by controversies, especially his perceived negative sentiments towards foreigners and his suspension of senior managers. There were also efforts to remove him from office. But none of these gave him sleepless nights. His main troubles, he said, came from the party that placed him as a mayoral candidate. His administration is an amalgam of Inkatha Freedom Party, African Christian Democratic Party, United Democratic Movement, Congress of the People and Al Jama-ah, which formed a coalition government. Jama-ah later pulled out. The EFF supports the coalition on issueby- issue basis in the council. Mashaba said it was the DA that made his job harder. This, he said, became more pronounced when he absorbed over 3,700 security guards into the city’s payroll.
“I don’t want any association with the DA. I thought the DA, when it talks about one South Africa for all, they meant it. But they were against my pro-poor policies. When I raised this matter with them, they said to me it is not DA policy. I said to them go and make it your policy, us as the city of Johannesburg we are going to in-source. “I was lucky that I was not answerable to the DA but the multi-party government .The DA has been a difficult partner from day one. They thought they were going to micro-manage me and I refused. If the DA had received the majority votes during the 2016 elections, I would not have survived a year. I would have resigned in the first year [in office]. I had ideas that were pro-poor, theirs was targeted at [serving] the rich. “Some of their caucus members complained that I was spending money on people who are not paying taxes. I took it as an insult.” Despite facing such resistance within the party, Mashaba said he was grateful for leading Johannesburg for three years. He survived three attempts by the ANC to remove him from power. “It has been a privilege. I take myself to be one of the most fortunate human being in life. “To be given an opportunity to serve my country with no knowledge of politics, and to run the most complex multiparty government. “It was very difficult. The EFF did not actually want me because of my
Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok centre Jesse Kriel witnessed a different kind of sporting history as he attended the finals of the Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge at the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sports Centre this past weekend. Kriel was in awe of the athleticism of South Africa’s leading wheelchair basketball athletes as he not only watched history being made when the North West won all three of the major finals for the first time, but also took part in an exhibition match to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge. “It was a privilege to be part of this. It was a lot of fun. I got some blisters on my hands and was sweating after about two minutes in that chair. Sometimes as athletes we are spoilt, but then you come to an environment like this where the players have to work or study and then still find time to practice on the side. I’d like to wish the national team players the best of luck going forward and I’ll definitely be supporting them as they work towards qualifying for the Paralympic Games,” said Kriel. In a festival of wheelchair basketball, the North West became the first province in the 49-year history of Wheelchair Basketball South Africa to win the Under-23, Senior Men and Senior Women’s finals.
The North West Senior Men’s team beat Gauteng 56-52, while the North West Stinging Bees won the Women’s final 3413 against the Gauteng Lionesses, and the North West Under-23 team beat KwaZuluNatal Under-23 41-28. Springbok Kriel was joined by the University of Johannesburg’s para-cycling star Palesa Manaleng, former South African national basketball team captain Quintin Denyssen, and the Vodacom Exco led by Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub in a variety of exhibition matches that saw them attempt to pit their skills against the country’s leading wheelchair basketball players. There was further cause for celebration as the North West Stinging Bees won R100 000 for their triumph, matching the prize money paid to the victorious men’s team. “We are so grateful to Vodacom for giving us equal prize money with the men. It inspires the women players to just keep improving every year,” said North West Stinging Bees captain Linda Bosele. The North West Under-23 team won R50 000 for their title triumph. The Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge finals showcased the incredible talent and tenacity of South Africa’s wheelchair basketball stars, and which in turn was recognized by para-cyclist Manaleng as she delivered a powerful message of hope to the players at the finals and emphasized how they
capitalist tendencies. “I was thrown into this. The DA never prepared me. I was never part of the coalition negotiations process. The ANC tried to destabilise my administration. What I did was to make sure that I get coalition partners behind me. The only way I could do this was to negotiate in good faith.” Mashaba said he has increased the
city’s capital expenditure from 51% when he took over in 2016, to 71% in 2019. This enabled the city to make a dent on its infrastructure backlog, which was put at R170bn. This week he conducted a sod-turning ceremony of the new Lutz substation in Honeydew worth R105m.
continue to inspire others through their sport. “When I cycle, that’s my freedom. I don’t feel disabled. I think it’s the same for the wheelchair basketball players. Events like the Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge are so important because there are disabled children out there who by circumstance are denied this kind of opportunity. For these players that are here performing on a stage like this, it’s important because other disabled kids see them, and their parents see them, and they realise it’s possible for their children to do the same. The more media coverage we can give sports like this, the more these boys and girls can be made aware of the opportunity.”
For Denyssen, playing basketball in a wheelchair was an eye-opener for him and he came away humbled by the experience. “I played in the Captain’s Clash against the current South African wheelchair basketball team captain Cecil Dumond. I was worried about my ability to shoot from a seated position because wheelchair basketball is a different set of skills altogether. But it was a great experience and I was really grateful to be a part of it,” said Denyssen. Vodacom is proud to be a sponsor of wheelchair basketball for the past 20 years. 20 Years of promoting the power of sport. The future of wheelchair basketball is exciting with Vodacom.

The Lion and the Lamb Musical –
the Market Theatre’s Christmas special
The Lion and The Lamb, a hugely successful musical play originally created by John Kani and Barney Simon, comes back after a decade to open the festive season at the Market Theatre from Friday, 22 November – Sunday, 22 December 2019. John Kani will reprise his leading role in a performance that will see the telling of the biblically-based story of Christ’s life brought vibrantly to life on stage in the John Kani Theatre. Multi award winning director, James Ngcobo, will, for the first time, direct John Kani in his role as the main narrator in what promises to be an exhilarating reimagined production. Jazz and gospel powerhouse, Nokukhanya Dlamini, who was part of the original production comes back in her role as lead singer. The Lion and the Lamb is based on one of the greatest stories ever told. It is the journey of Jesus the child, the boy, the man and Jesus the son of God. It is a story for everyone young and old. The production was last produced by the Market Theatre in 2009 and received much critical acclaim. “It’s never easy to reimagine any classic but I am blessed to work with theatre giants like John Kani and Nokukhanya Dlamini who were part of the original cast. It makes my task much earier to undertake. My vision for the 2019 restaging of The Lion and the Lamb is to add young talented actors and musicians to blow up the musicality and acting in the production. I am blessed to have found some of the finest actors who will be taking the baton from John Kani in roles as supporting storytellers.
I am looking at breathing new life into a classic play, handled with the delicateness that it deserves and also to give emerging voices an opportunity to perform alongside a great actor like John Kani”, said James Ngcobo. (too many batons!!) “Since it was first staged The Lion and the Lamb has managed to deliver sold out performances. This speaks to the unparalleled quality production it has been and will continue to be. Audiences can look forward to spiritually charged evenings of praise and worship”, added James Ngcobo The narrative will be accompanied by a collage of traditional Gospel songs and songs from the International Gospel Songbook. Songs that are familiar to churchgoers and that celebrate the musical prowess of the country have been carefully chosen to accompany and underscore the stories from the parables. Some songs will be a direct extension of the stories. John Kani will be supported by some of South Africa’s best voices Nokukhanya Dlamini, Gugu Shezi and Nomfundo Dlamini. There will also be the highly acclaimed Lerato Gwebu, Lerato Mvelase, the singing sensation, Itumeleng Tshabane, and the brilliant guitarist, Avril Mkansi. They will all be backed by a four piece band under the musical directorship of the renowned musician, Tshepo Mngoma. In addition, the production will include a stunning set and accompanying visuals. SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS LEGENDS TEAM UP TO SUPPORT GARY PLAYER INVITATIONAL
Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok Steven Kitshoff and an array of South African sports legends came together this weekend in support of The Player Foundation and its drive to make a difference for charity through the Gary Player Invitational at the Lost City Golf Course at Sun City from 23-24 November. Kitshoff and fellow Springboks Bryan Habana, Akona Ndungane, Odwa Ndungane, Butch James, Patrick Lambie and Owen Nkumane as well as former Proteas cricket captain Shaun Pollock, International Boxing Hall of Fame member Brian Mitchell, and former Bafana Bafana stars Mark Williams, Jimmy Tau and Matthew Booth joined a field of men and women professional golfers and business leaders in the 20th anniversary of the Gary Player Invitational and to celebrate the over $64 million The Player Foundation has raised for charity, and its goal of reaching $100 million. All attendees spoke of their incredible admiration for the work of The Player Foundation and the 20-year history of this tournament in changing people’s lives. For Kitshoff in particular, the Gary Player Invitational and its ability to use sport to change people’s lives resonates with a man, who after the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup triumph in Japan, has witnessed how sport can unite South Africa. “It’s been a crazy couple of weeks after the Rugby World Cup victory. South Africans just came out in their masses to share in our celebration and it was incredible to see. The team put in so much hard work and made so many sacrifices. It’s been an incredibly great journey,” said Kitshoff, who made his debut in the Gary Player Invitational. The 36-hole tournament has for the past 20 years been the final tournament
on the global Gary Player Invitational series, and is the major fundraiser for The Player Foundation’s selected beneficiaries Wings and Wishes and the Blair Atholl School. It’s a remarkable legacy that had Shaun Pollock in awe of the impact it has made for charity. “What The Player Foundation has done for charity has been remarkable. What Gary Player achieved as a golfer is one thing, and then when that came to an end the impact he has made through The Player Foundation is fantastic. He is so
passionate and full of energy, and even though he is 84 it doesn’t affect the impact he is still having,” he said. Pat Lambie, who also played in his first Gary Player Invitational, was just as impressed with the longstanding charity impact of this tournament and The Player Foundation. “I’ve heard so much about the Gary Player Invitational and I’m so excited to be here. Gary Player is so inspirational. When he talks it makes you just want to get up and conquer the world. It’s great to be a part of the good work of The Play-

er Foundation and see the impact it is making in people’s lives,” he said. Odwa Ndungane said he is certainly inspired to do his part for charity this weekend. “I was ecstatic when I received an invitation. We all know the icon that Gary Player is, so to spend some time with him and then also see some good come out of it for charity and to help The Player Foundation is a wonderful opportunity. All young South Africans can learn from the amazing work done by The Player Foundation,” he said.
