Home destroyed by fire in Germiston

“Firefighters immediately initiated defensive fire suppression because of gas cylinders exploding inside the house.

An eight-roomed home located in Hogsback Street, Rondebult was destroyed in a blaze on Monday morning, 24 February. Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams from Wadeville, Germiston Central and Thokoza fire stations promptly responded with three fire engines to the scene after the call was received at 10.30am. “Upon the arrival of the teams, the house was well alight and the roof had already collapsed,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Firefighters immediately initiated defensive fire suppression because of gas cylinders exploding inside the house.

“They managed to salvage a 48kg gas cylinder from one of the rooms, which was a definite risk.” Ntladi added that as per information

obtained on the scene the fire started in the absence of any occupants in the house and no casualties were recorded on scene.

Cleaning up the EDITOR Brackendowns Police Station A NOTE FROM THE

Last week Mr Louis Meintjes, the president of TLU SA said that they are pleased to see some positive signals from the Minister of Finance, Mr Tito Mboweni, during his Budget Speech, despite the small leeway he had for manoeuvring. He confirmed that the increase in government wages, corruption and wasteful expenditure of state funds is a priority that must be brought under control to get to the point where the government can hire adequately skilled employees. “I am delighted the Minister showed he is serious about getting the expenses column and the income column in balance. But we should look at his announcements in context. South Africa is still caught up in uncertain policies which cannot guarantee economic growth. Issues like expropriation without compensation and the push for transformation at the cost of hiring skilled employees, are glaring examples. The focus on the development of infrastructure with an allocation of R10 billion over three years is a step in the right direction. It is good to see that the government committed to ensuring a stable electricity supply by restructuring the sector. Strict conditions should, however, be linked to further financial support. I am just worried, like all South Africans, whether Mr Mboweni can create conditions that ensure the tax payer’s money doesn’t land in a bottomless pit – as is the case with SAA and other stateowned entities. The 25 cents per litre increase in the fuel levy is always a blow to South Africans. It will also have a significant impact on the economy as everything will become more expensive,” said Meintjes. Two weeks ago Sgt Lindile Moloi, councillor Malcolm Maifala, Liza Alves and Chantelle Habib cleaned the Brackendowns police station’s garden. Members of the Brackendowns CPF, Rawson Properties and Ward 38 councillor Malcolm Maifala helped clean the Brackendowns SAPS building and grounds as well. tame TIMES was part of the day and together with role players we would like to thank everyone who came out to help on the day.

An act of love in February Valentine’s Day comes but once a year and this year, the Union Hospital staff and patients were graced by an act of love by local resident Bronwyn Humphris and her assistant, Dr L Swanepoel. With the blessing of hospital management, they handed out lovely colouring sheets with cute Valentine’s Day sayings to all of the wards to brighten up everybody’s day. Nearly 1000 copies were handed out and added some extra joy and love to the meaning of Valentine’s Day.

Author visits Assumption Convent School The author of The Mark, Mrs Edyth Bulbring, is currently touring South Africa. Assumption Convent School was fortunate to host her on Wednesday, 26 February. The Grade 9 girls thoroughly enjoyed their study of the novel last year, and asked interesting questions. The Grades 7 and 8 girls were introduced to the text by the author herself. Mrs Bulbring was available to sign their novels, and her book agents were on hand to purchase her novels at cost price. The talk definitely enhanced the girls’ English educational experience.

A fair budget for the average South African

The Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, performed a difficult balancing act in crafting the 2020/2021 budget in regards to tightening the purse strings and stimulating the economy. Basani Maluleke, CEO of African Bank, says, “We are cognisant of the pressure that South Africans and our customers are under and we therefore welcome the personal tax relief, particularly for lower income earners.” Individual taxpayers received an unexpected tax relief of R2 billion through the adjustment of tax brackets by more than the inflation rate. There is also no increase in VAT, which remains at 15%. A lower inflation rate, the interest rate reduction earlier this year and the reduction in personal tax proposals are all intended to help kick start the economy, which Mboweni predicts will only grow at 0.9% this year. Maluleke says that although the budget may seem complex to most people, it is really just a large financial plan that applies to all South Africans. She highlights the 14 points every South African should be aware of: Budget 2020 highlights which impact you: 1. No major tax increases, including VAT. Mboweni noted it would be foolhardy to make any increases given the tough economic environment. 2. A welcome personal income tax relief. A person earning an average of R460 000 per annum will have taxes reduced by R3 400 per year People who earn an average of R250 000 a year will have a tax reduction of R1 500 per year Someone earning R10 000 a month will pay 10% less tax Someone earning R100 000 a month will pay 1.5% less tax 3. An increase in the tax-free savings allowance to R36 000, from R33 000 per annum. This will allow for further tax savings for South Africans who can take advantage of this tax saving initiative. Maluleke recommends all South Africans save some of their tax relief in a suitable savings and investment product which offers the best interest rates. 4. To assist business to become more competitive and grow, the corporate income tax base will be broadened so that the increased base can assist to

reduce the corporate tax rate of 28%. 5. Start-up business will be assisted, with a preferential small business tax regime and a VAT and turnover tax threshold. Maluleke says we need to encourage an entrepreneurial culture in South Africa and bring more people into the formal system. “This is encouraging as it will facilitate growth in small business. We are pleased to also see a lowering in the cost of doing business and steps being taken to streamline the registration process of new businesses.” 6 Property market threshold for transfer duties is adjusted downward, with no transfer duty on a property costing R1 million or less. This is a great saving when looking to buy or sell a house in that price range. 7 Excise taxes, commonly known as Sin taxes, will increase across the range of cigarettes, beer, whiskey and wine. Sorghum beer will, however, not be impacted by a tax increase. 8 Heated tobacco products, for example hubbly bubbly, will be taxed at 75% of the rate of cigarettes. 9 The fuel levy goes up by 25 cents per litre. “This will impact consumers negatively, directly through added transport costs and indirectly through added input costs across a range of goods and services,” says Maluleke. 10. Carbon tax will bring in R1.75 billion. Plastic bag levies will increase to 25 cents to try and limit the plastic bags being strewn all over SA. Maluleke says you will save in the long run if you buy some environmentally-friendly shopping bags and only use these when shopping. 11 Youth employment: Raising skills and improving the ability of young people to find jobs is an important focus of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention. National Treasury will reprioritise resources to raise spending on critical areas. 12 Social grant payments: Pensioners, disability grants and care dependency grants will increase by R80 to R1 860 per month. War veterans’ grants will increase by R80 to R1880. Foster care will increase by R40 to R1 040 and the child support grant will increase by R20 to R445 per month. Changing the way we provide social grants has generated about R1 billion per annum in efficiency savings, which will be partly used to raise the daily subsidy per child. 13 Supporting lending: Working with the financial sector, a pilot of the Help to Buy scheme has supported over 2 000 families to buy their own homes. For every R1 subsidy provided by government, the scheme crowds in R8 from the private sector. In a single year, the Help to Buy scheme has supported nearly R1 billion in new lending. 14 Municipalities will be allocated R426 billion to assist them to provide basic services. “This should help ensure that every South African has running water and electricity,” says Maluleke.

The benefits of a deposit on a home

Even though lenders are granting 100% loans at the moment, putting down a deposit when you buy property will be beneficial in the long run, says Richard Blignaut, Chief Operations Officer of City&Suburbs Realty. It’s common practice to put down a 10% to 20% deposit on a property. The deposit shows the banks that you are a responsible saver and minimises the risk banks are taking. This can ultimately impact the interest rate that banks will be offering you. Blignaut says that a buyer who puts down a deposit is more likely to be offered up to a 2% lower interest rate than those asking for a 100% bond. This will ultimately save you thousands of Rands on your repayments over a 20-year period. A deposit also means that you are lending a smaller amount and your interest repayments are therefore less. Credit worthiness is one of the main factors in

the approval of home loans and if you have too much debt, banks may decide to look the other way because you’re seen as a high-risk client. Putting down a deposit for a property is difficult, and it takes time. But it is worth it. Take the time to invest in your future. Forecast for property value in 2020 FNB property economist Siphamandla Mkwanazi, has said that there has been a slight positive shift in the market during late 2019. He said that house price growth could be expected to increase by 4.5% – 5% for 2020. That is also down to the 25 basis point drop in prime lending rates in January 2020. Positive results in the market will only happen over time, particularly when supply still outperforms demand. Therefore one should look at purchasing at the right price and holding on to the property for the medium to long term.

Blunders That Shorten Rugby Players Careers The old outdated “one shoe fits all’ training system, has resulted in a large number of young rugby players experiencing constant fatigue coupled with continuous injuries. So many talented players are forced to stop playing rugby prematurely because of serious injuries picked up over the years because preventative steps were not put in place to protect them. Coaches are the only ones who can solve this problem, by identifying the player’s body type,

and then designing a proper strength training and nutritional program to match each player. There are three different body types: Ectomorph (skinny build with fast metabolism): Must eat at least 5 smaller meals daily including snacks, consisting of low GI carbohydrates, lean protein, essential fats, plenty of water with vitamins, minerals and amino acids to help gain weight. At least 70 % of the meal should consist of carbohydrates, including high GI carbohydrates after practice or games.

Ectomorphs should do weight training twice weekly. Endomorph (fatter build with slower metabolism ): Should follow a similar eating plan, eating carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch only and not at supper. Between 30-40% of the meals should come from carbohydrates, including eating fiborous carbohydrates with lean protein at night. Weight training should be done 2-3 times weekly. Mesomorph (muscular build with faster metabolism): Can eat almost any foods without any consequences, but they

Ndlovu rewrites Sports4life Time Trial record books Wednesday, 26 February, was a time for rewriting the Sports4life time trial records. Three weeks ago Greg Temblett astonished everyone with a time of 19 mins 54 secs, a new record. No one ever thought that Greg’s record would be significantly broken any time soon. But at his first attempt at the Sports4life 5 km Time Trial, Mbongeni Ndlovu, running out on his own from the start, broke the record by a massive 2 mins 18 secs. It made for a truly memorable evening. We are excited about what the future holds with such amazing athletes gracing our time trial and creating a wonderfully competitive environment, while at the same time still having an amazingly warm and friendly vibe. It would be a real pleasure to welcome as many local runners as would like to join us every Wednesday evening at 6pm, The time trial starts from in front of News Cafe, in Meyersdal. Please feel free to phone, whatsapp or email Pete Rossouw for any further information on 082 895 8129:

Blues shock Stormers and pose some serious questions

The DHL Stormers’ trend of winning while not playing well was ground to a shuddering halt at a sweltering Newlands on Saturday and in dishing out a comprehensive 33-14 lesson the Blues posed some uncomfortable questions that will need to answer quickly. Questions such as what happens on the day that the Stormers are fronted physically, given that up to now they’ve shown so little evidence of finesse or an innovative, sharp edge to their attacking game? And what becomes of the Stormers on the day they run into a backline that properly knows how to put into use comfortable, go-forward possession? Perhaps there are a few more questions that could be asked that appeared to get a negative answer in this game. Such as what happens when you play some of the older players in too many consecutive games and, perhaps most pertinently, what happens on the day that you can no longer afford to look away from potential problem areas on the basis that you got the right result on the scoreboard? Problem areas such as all those dropped balls that prevent the team from getting any kind of attacking rhythm, a flyhalf who tries hard but appears low on confidence. MAYBE CHICKENS, OR SEAGULLS, CAME HOME TO ROOST

It may seem harsh, and perhaps it is because, after all, this was the first Stormers defeat of the season. And make no mistake, the Blues played exceptionally well, and along the way delivered an object lesson to their opponents on how to attack with ball in hand. But the Cape team was so utterly outplayed in every facet of the game that there can’t possibly be any sugar-coating of it. And it is hard to ignore the feeling that perhaps there are some chickens coming home to roost for the Stormers. Or maybe more accurately, given this is Newlands, seagulls rather than chickens. In the sense that when you are winning the weak points aren’t highlighted. And there are plenty of weak points once you remove the character aspect that had propelled the Stormers to the top of the log heading into this game. It was a stiflingly hot day in Cape Town, and perhaps that can be seen as the genesis of the slumbering Stormers start. The last time they played in conditions like these it was in Johannesburg two weeks ago and they looked short of a gallop there too. Only they were much flatter here, and at least against the Lions they had the altitude as an excuse. In any event, the Stormers got away with it there because they won. The Stormers paid for their sluggish start

by falling behind quickly. They were 10-0 down after just seven minutes thanks to an Otere Black penalty and then wing Joe Marchant crossed for the first of his two tries after a good initial break from fullback Stephen Perofeta set up the attack. The Blues had the benefit of a penalty advantage from a scrum in the build-up to their opening try. Yes, you read that correctly. The Stormers never had the comfort of their usually dominant scrum in this game, and having the roles reversed was a sobering experience for them. A 10-0 deficit within the first 10 minutes is a movie the Newlands faithful, normally accustomed to seeing their team win, has seen before. It happened last year, on Easter Saturday, against the Brumbies - also a game like this one that most people expected the Stormers to win after they’d ended off their overseas tour on a rousing note against the Rebels in Melbourne. But the Stormers came back to lose a close game then. This one never looked like being close. The Stormers just never dominated the collisions and the gainline like they normally do, they gave the opposition momentum by missing tackles. They missed about five just in the move that saw the Blues score a try on the stroke of halftime that snuffed out what briefly looked like a strong Stormers fightback. That was after they had recovered from a 20-0 deficit, something they faced as early as the 20th minute, to cut it to 2014 through two good tries to first Juarno Augustus, who went over off a forward drive, and then Sergeal Petersen who showed some zip in running off the first receiver to score two minutes before halftime. Had the Stormers kept it at that score to the halftime hooter this game might have turned out differently. But on an afternoon where they made some lamentable mistakes, they overthrew a lineout deep in their own half, the Blues got momentum and it ended with Marchant crossing all too easily for his second try in the right corner.
