St Mary’s Children’s Home is a registered non-profit organisation that provides a safe, secure home and therapeutic environment for children from families in crisis. The committed members of the ABC Ladies Club have weathered the different challenges of the past year by standing together as a group of devoted friends. While they have met for a celebratory Christmas breakfast at the Mercure Hotel in Bedfordview for the past 21 years, this was the first year they sang Silent Night together in both English and German at their Christmas meeting. They were led in song by talented opera singer Christiaan Snyman, who showcased his talent at the breakfast, singing Christmas carols and other favourites which left the ladies reminiscing over their 21 years of friendship, and their special moments with ABC. Christiaan sang without a microphone, a magnificent feat considering his velvety voice resonated throughout the entire hotel restaurant area. Mercure Hotel has hosted the group of friends, who have also stepped up as community activists in their own right, for the past two decades and Mercure staff received them with warmth, placing

JMPD Top Officer for 2019 awarded a brand new car
Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) held a gala dinner event this week to honour outstanding performance amongst its officers with the top prize of a brand new car awarded to the organizations Top Officer of the Year for 2019. The event, including the prizes, was sponsored by Diageo South Africa, the maker of leading spirits brands. Diageo is committed to curbing drinking and driving through awareness and increased law enforcement through the company’s Drive Dry campaign. Held at the Ellis Park Stadium events center in Johannesburg, the event was attended by the outgoing Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Mr. Herman Mashaba, MMC of Public Safety, councilor Michael Sun, Chief of the JMPD, Mr David Tembe, government and private sector stakeholders. This year’s most celebrated traffic law enforcement officer, Superintendent Phineas Manyama from Martindale Station drove away from the award ceremony in a brand-new VW Polo Vivo. Manyama is recognized for variety of successes including management of traffic flow during the 8 months closure of M2 bridge between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street.
The first and second runner up officers, Phumzile Mkhwanazi from the Roodepoort Station and Mmanoko Teffo from the Alexandra Marlboro Station were rewarded with vouchers to the value of R15 000 and R5 000 respectively. The Top Officer awards are presented to those officers who go beyond the call of duty, show up professionally at all times, conducts themselves in a good manner, respects their work and those of their colleagues, uses the JMPD resources responsibly, at no time or situation accepts bribes from irresponsible road users and, ensures that all the road users do not consume alcohol or behave in a way that will put other people’s lives in danger. “I am pleased to have spent my last day in the office rewarding the top officers of the City of Johannesburg. The crime stats within the city have decreased and it is because of the hard work of this team. I urge you to continue doing a great job as we are about to enter the festive season and a lot is expected from you,” Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba said during the ceremony. Diageo SA Managing Director, Graeme Harlow said the company was excited
to partner with JMPD for the second year in a row to encourage outstanding performance in law enforcement including the rules against drinking and driving. “The Top Officer of the Year awards are a way we can encourage responsible conduct, enforcement of the rules of the road, and ultimately discourage bribery and corruption and we are proud to honour these unsung heroes this evening. Through our Join the Pact to Drive Dry campaign, we are excited to have sponsored the prizes for these awards to encourage everyone to be responsible on the road,” said Harlow. Nominees were chosen by their peers and assessed by the number of alcohol screenings they conducted throughout the year. The screening included a breathalyser administered by the traffic officer and collection of blood sample as evidence for prosecution. The JMPD and Drive Dry will also be working hand in hand this festive season in enforcing the law on Joburg’s roads to keep them safe from drunk drivers and encouraging the public to Join the Pact. Road safety is a significant priority for both the JMPD and Drive Dry, especially during the notorious “silly season”. “JMPD has delivered great results in reducing crime and drunk driving incidents in the Johannesburg community through various targeted interventions. It is because of this that we have partnered with them to support and recognise the hardworking officers,” concluded Harlow. Chief of the JMPD, David Tembe, said that they are very excited about the partnership with Drive Dry, a Diageo SA initiative. “We believe that we cannot ensure the safety of our people on the roads alone. It is through partnerships with private

Less is more I took up amateur boxing while in school many years ago, and I was rewarded with a professional boxing license ten years later. Unfortunately my boxing career was halted after signing a lucrative modelling and movie contract. In the beginning I was doing weight training for two hours daily, six times per week. I felt like it helped me gain lean muscle, but my progress gradually slowed down after a few months. I experienced sore joints, fatigue and constant headaches. My research uncovered that like thousands of other gym goers, I was over training. My nutritional intake also did not support the excess energy expelled during those brutal workouts, which slowed down muscle growth. I adjusted my nutrition and gym routine, including spending an hour training four times weekly, and the symptoms vanished a week later. I was fortunate to work with Reg Park, one of the greatest bodybuilding champions who also trained the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger. Armed with this new knowledge, I went on to win the South African natural heavyweight body building championships four years in a row, and placed 3rd at my first world championship. The sudden passing of my wife of heart failure in 2015 put me into a state of deep depression, but later motivated me
to author my new book ‘Transform your Body, Transform your Life’. I realized that I couldn’t do anything more for my wife, but still needed to guide thousands of people with correct training and nutritional information that I accumulated over the years. I have since streamlined my workouts compared to years back, combining bag punching with weight training 4-5 days weekly, limiting each workout to an hour. For details on my workout dvds and new book go to Facebook Drugfreetraining or Instagram dewee_1. Readers can also Whatsapp me on 084 865 0000 or 062 237 90 44.

crime awareness amongst children of Gauteng. ”We believe it is important to be proactive and educate our children on the dangers of crime. Mr ADT is able to educate children on a serious topic but in a fun and entertaining way,“ says Linda Goodenough, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT.
For kids the year-end school holiday is a welcome break, but for some parents - who have to work throughout – it is a stressful period of constantly wondering if your children are safe. The Bracken Family fun Day, which is taking place on 7 December from 09:00 to 14:00, is a perfect outing for the whole family. The day will be filled with fun activities including a fun and informative 40 minute safety show by Mr. ADT at 09:30. Fidelity ADT invites all parents to bring their kids along and come and see the show. It’s school holidays and an ideal time to empower children with personal safety knowledge in a non-threatening environment. Mr. ADT will keep the children entertained with magic tricks whilst delivering important crime awareness messages and safety tips. The show, a complementary service offered by Fidelity ADT Security to pre-primary and primary schools, is part of a program aimed at creating
Fidelity ADT offered the following tips: • Make sure children know their full names, address and phone number • Children practice operating door and window locks at home, and insist they always check who is at the gate or door before opening it. • Never to reveal on the phone or at the door that there are no adults at home, but rather say are their parents too busy to come to the phone or door. • Stranger Danger – never to get in a car with someone they don’t know or leave the school grounds unaccompanied. “Unfortunately, in South Africa there is no escape from conversations about crime,” says Goodenough. “Children are never too young to be educated and made aware of the dangers that exist in our society. They need to be empowered to be able to protect themselves in a dangerous situation,” she adds. “Darin has a fun, friendly way of addressing these pertinent issues. He has found the perfect balance, as the show keeps the children informed and entertained while reinforcing valuable safety tips.”

Ekurhuleni assists victims of Pomona fire rebuild their lives
The City of Ekurhuleni allocated 430 shacks to the victims of the Pomona informal settlement fire on Wednesday, 27 November. This follows the fire that brought the settlement to ashes on 30 September 2019. The City has accommodated and provided humanitarian services to the displaced residents at Benoni Community Hall since then. The humanitarian services included food, social services and sanitation. The shacks were rebuilt in a pattern that follows the City’s programmme to re-block informal settlements. The reblocking programme entails alignment of streets so that basic municipal services
are provided such as electrification, sanitation and piped water provision. The space between the shacks has been increased to curb the rapid spread of fires and the roads have been widened to accommodate emergency vehicles. Piped water is provided through eight communal taps, while sanitation and weekly waste removal services will also be provided. Shirly Mogotle was one of the beneficiaries of the rebuilt shacks. “I still remember vividly the day the fire broke out. I lost everything. I did not know what to do and we were taken to the shelter. Today I am so grateful the City has assisted me to rebuild my livelihood,” Mogotle said.
- New visa and travel are changes coming -
Here’s what you need to know Department of Home Affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has announced a number of new visa changes heading into the festive season. In a presentation on Sunday (1 December), Motsoaledi provided an update on some of the key pronouncements made by the department in July and confirmed government’s readiness to facilitate traveller and goods movement at South African ports of entry over the festive season. Some of the most notable changes are outlined below. E-VISAS Motsoaledi said that the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has started with the testing and piloting of its electronic visa application system. “The decision to introduce e-Visa was informed by observable benefits of this system. It is reliable, clientfriendly and convenient for visa applicants, airlines, trading partners and Home Affairs officials,” he said. Once fully rolled-out, prospective visitors will apply online for visas, at home, office or place of work. It will lessen administrative burdens, including those involved in receiving applicants at visa offices, printing visa stickers and returning passports to applicants. Motsoaledi said that the department is currently testing the new system with Kenya. He added that as part of the pilot, a team of DHA immigration and IT officials visited Kenya. “This team is scheduled to return to Kenya next week on 9 December 2019. The first Kenyan tourist who applied for the visitors’ visa on the new e-Visa system arrived yesterday afternoon and more are expected this week as part of the pilot. “We are continuously monitoring this pilot process to ensure that user experience is not compromised. In early 2020, we’ll include China, India and Nigeria to the pilot which will run until March 2020.” VISA-FREE ACCESS As part of efforts to attract tourists to South Africa, Motsoaledi said that his department has added the Republic of Tunisia to the list of countries which enjoy visa-free status to South Africa. This means that tourists from this country will come to South Africa without requiring a visa and South Africans can visit Tunisia without a visa as part of reciprocity. “The implementation date of this agreement will be decided and communicated after the two countries have agreed on a date,” he said. “South Africa now has 83 countries which it has
granted visa free status to. These countries are among the highest tourist sending nations globally.” FESTIVE SEASON Motsoaledi said that his department is working with border law enforcement agencies to ensure ease of movement for travellers over the festive season. “We want travellers to enter and leave South Africa without hindrance in this peak period, and to do so in a manner that is legally permissible, without breaking any law of our country,” he said. Motsoaledi said that capacity will be increased between Wednesday, 4 December 2019 and 13 January 2020. “The ports of entry with traditionally high volumes of movement will have their operating hours increased by between one and seven hours. “Border law enforcement entities have confirmed readiness to handle increased volumes of travellers and goods at all ports of entry. This increase in movement of people and goods, across borders, is due to the inflow and outflow of travellers such as tourists, cross-border workers, business, academics and those on educational activities.” He said that Home Affairs will deploy close to 400 additional officials at selected ports, to assist with delivery of immigration services and offer technical support at the borders. Most of these officials will be posted at the Beit Bridge Port of Entry with Zimbabwe, Lebombo, Maseru Bridge Port of Entry with Lesotho and the Ficksburg Port of Entry with Lesotho. “We implore all travellers leaving and entering South Africa to ensure all their travel documents are in order to avoid unnecessary delays at ports. These include passports, visas, health certificates, permits for specified goods, plants and animals and vehicle insurance and bank authorised cross-border documents for vehicles.”
Weathering year-end financial storms
It’s the time of year when lots of seemingly unrelated elements can combine to cause the perfect financial storm. Black Friday, summer holidays, festive-season marketing, early salary payments and year-end bonuses can be a dangerous combination. According to South Africa’s largest debt counsellor, DebtBusters, there’s always a significant spike in enquiries about debt counselling in January and February from consumers who haven’t managed to weather the year-end. What typically happens is that many people are paid their December salaries early - mid-month, rather than at the end of the month. This boosts their bank balance at a time of month when they’d normally have less money, explains Marlies Kappers, head of marketing at financial services provider, DirectAxis. For those lucky enough to get a year-end bonus, there’s even more money than usual. “Because it’s the holiday season, it’s easy to overspend and if you’ve been paid early in December, you have to wait for up to a month and a half before you get paid again at the end of January,” says Marlies. There are other things consumers need to think about when considering their year-end budgeting. One of these is the early debit order run. This means that debit orders, for companies which subscribe to the system, get processed as soon as your salary is paid into your bank account. “If your salary is paid in mid-December then that’s when the debit orders will come off, rather than at the end of the month when you usually get paid,” explains Marlies. The reason for this is to ensure there’s enough money in your account when the debit orders are processed. It’s important
to remember that a debit order is an instruction you have given the bank to pay a third party. If there are insufficient funds in the account to do this, the bank will penalise you. Worse, it will negatively affect your credit rating, which means you may not be able to borrow money, get financing or will have to pay higher interest rates in the future. Think of the early debit order run as a financial fusebox that helps prevent overloads on your bank account. “If people aren’t expecting their debit orders to be processed when they get paid earlier in December it can make the wait for the next pay cheque seem even longer,” says Marlies. This can be compounded by other expenses in the New Year, such as children needing new school uniforms and stationery. She suggests the following to avoid this situation: Make a plan: If you get paid early, remember you’ll have to stretch your budget until the next pay cheque. Also consider any upcoming expenses in January. Plan your spending accordingly. Resist overspending: The combination of a year-end bonus and early salary payment may make you feel flush but resist the temptation to splurge. First make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses into the New Year. Think about using some of your bonus to reduce or settle some debt. If you can, try to save some money before spoiling yourself. Pay attention: Don’t ignore correspondence or messages from banks or other financial service providers informing you about earlier debit order payments. If you know your debit orders will come off earlier, you can work out how much you’ll have to spend until you get paid in January.

Biker locked up for doing 198km/h in Alberton
Between Friday, 29 November and Sunday, 1 December, the EMPD Benoni precinct and Speed Enforcement Unit Officers, arrested thirty (30) lawbreakers in Benoni, Boksburg, Bedfordview and Alberton areas, for driving while intoxicated and for exceeding the stipulated speed limit. From 18:00 on Friday to 02:00 on Saturday, twenty four (24) male drivers between the ages of 29 and 52 were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol/being intoxicated and were detained at the Benoni police station following roving roadblocks. On Saturday between 05:00 and 10:00 in Alberton area, on the N3 by Grey avenue on ramp, the Speed Unit Members arrested three (3) male motorists between the ages of 28 and 44, without any reason for speeding, caught doing between 164 and 166km/h in a 120km/h area. The trio were taken to Alberton police station. On Sunday between 05:00 and 07:00 in Bedfordview area, on the N12 west
between Edenvale Road and Gillooly’s interchange, members enforcing speed stopped and locked up a 47year old male driving a VW Citi Golf for clocking 174km/h in a 120km/h zone, citing he was late for work. The speeder was taken to Bedfordview police station. Meanwhile in Alberton at 09:00, on the N12 freeway direction east by the R59 bridge, a 31-year old male Honda motorcycle rider with a female passenger, was apprehended for clocking 198km/h in a 120km/h zone, citing he was taking his wife for breakfast, as it was her birthday. The other male driver caught doing 163km/h in a Mazda 2, had no reason for speeding. Both offenders were escorted to Alberton police station. All six (6) motorists apprehended for driving at an excessive speed, were charged with reckless and negligent driving. The thirty arrested suspects are expected to appear in Benoni, Palmridge and Germiston Magistrate’s Courts soon.
Enjoy your holidays - safely The December holidays is a time to rest and recharge after a busy year. One of South Africa’s largest armed response companies says it is important not to neglect personal safety during this period, especially as it is also a busy time of year for opportunistic criminals. “We all deserve the time to relax with our friends and families. If we remember a few basic safety measures, we can make a big difference towards enjoying this time of year in safety,” says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT. The first and most important step to take, she says, is to regularly test your alarm, to ensure that it is in good working order. It is also a good idea to let your security company know what your holiday plans are, and how best to get in touch with you in the event of an emergency. “Your security company must be able to get hold of you in case of any emergency. If you are away abroad or somewhere with no cellphone reception, then they need to know who is looking after your property while you are on holiday,” says Hattingh. Additional security tips for holiday makers to make sure their residential property is protected and safe include: • Cut back any bushes or trees that may offer easy access over walls or gates to your property, or provide places for criminals to hide. • Inform your neighbours and Neighbourhood Watch of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property. • If hiring a house-sitter, ensure that you teach him/ her how to use your alarm correctly. What should parents do if they aren’t able to get time off work, and their children are potentially alone at home during the holidays? “Many parents work through the school holidays so kids are looked after by a family member or domestic worked or simply stay at home by themselves. Whatever your situation is, kids can have a great holiday while staying safe by following simple advice,” says Hattingh. She offers these pointers: • Keep doors locked and don’t let anybody in
through the gate without checking with their parents. • If there is an alarm system, teach them how to activate and de-activate it and how and when to use panic buttons. • Show them where the list of emergency contacts is – including the 10111 number as well as a nearby neighbour – and explain when and how to use it. • If your children have access to the internet and social media while alone at home, make sure that they keep privacy settings as high as possible. • If they are heading to malls or restaurants, they need to look after their belongings and to look out for each other. • They also need to be clear on the transport arrangements and never go anywhere with a stranger. Tell them to find a security guard in the mall if they are scared or unsure of what to do. • If you get separated from your parents or guardians in the shops or mall, go to the nearest sales person or uniformed security officer and ask for help. • Always walk or play with at least one other person. • Always walk along streets you know. • Never take shortcuts through bushes or empty areas. In conclusion, Hattingh says the key thing to remember is to make sure everyone is prepared and that they know exactly what to do in a case of an emergency. “It doesn’t matter if you are relaxing at home or next to the ocean these holidays. If something were to happen to you or a loved one, do you know who to contact for emergency assistance? If your children are unattended, do they know how to look out for themselves? And, is your home security system working properly? “If you are able to answer these questions, you will be well on your way towards enjoying a safe and relaxing festive season holiday,” says Hattingh.

Gender-based violence a concern for Primrose SAPS Primrose police arrested two men each on a charge of domestic violence. “While we are speaking out about genderbased violence, some are still giving the nation’s outcry the cold shoulder,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police. Recently, the Primrose police arrested two men, aged 21 and 30, each on a separate charge of domestic violence.
The first incident was reported in Abelia Road, Primrose Hill. “The complainant alleged that she arrived home and found that her 21-year-old son had blocked the door with a fridge and locked the door,” said Maome. “She forced her way into the home and asked him why he had blocked the door. “He allegedly pushed and strangled her, while calling her names.”

The incident was reported to the Primrose police and the suspect was arrested. The Springboks play against the All Blacks far too often The Springboks storied rivalry with New Zealand has lost some of its mystique in recent years because the fixture simply happens far too often. You can get too much of a good thing, and it might be the best thing for South African rugby if the Springboks cut the All Blacks out of their diet for a while. The Springboks and All Blacks have played at least two Test matches against one another every year since 1996. The 1995 Rugby World Cup final was the 42nd meeting between South African and New Zealand in Test rugby…there have now been 99 meetings. Former All Black flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens recently suggested that Super Rugby would be better off without South African teams, citing time zone differences and travel as challenges for New Zealand rugby. Mehrtens looked at that issue purely from New Zealand’s point of view and didn’t suggest dropping the Boks from the Rugby Championship. That might be because the Rugby Championship needs the Springboks more than the Boks need the Championship. If South Africa and Argentina withdraw from Super Rugby and the Championship, they would likely be replaced by Japan and Fiji, who could join the tournament
anyway with plans in the works for 2022. The Rugby Championship would become a kind of Pacific Nations League Premier division. The withdrawal of the Springboks would take with it an enormous chunk of the tournament’s appeal and revenue. The Springboks could be better off aligning themselves with the Six Nations, bringing their calendar into sync with

European club rugby where so many of their players are now based. Rugby bosses are desperate to shake things up as the sport competes for eyeballs in a hyper-competitive market and tries to get bums back in stadium seats. The shakeup that would be best suited to South African rugby would see our game shift onto the path of least resistance.
