Randhart Primary School enchants residents at the Mall at Newmarket with the Jerusalem dance The pupil council of Randhart Primary School took off their jackets and put on dancing shoes to the rhythm of the Jerusalem dance on 10 October 2020 at the Mall at Newmarket . “Orion Primary School has tackled the Jerusalem challenge and the Ranties will never stand back for any challenge,” said Ty Ax, principal of Randhart Primary School, who incited the

“flash mob”. The student council embraced this global trend with dedication and their synchronized and passionate movements created an energetic atmosphere in the shopping center. Ramkat, the Ranties’ mascot, shoveled along while handing out treats to passers-by. “The Ranties accepted the Jerusalem challenge and used it as a new innovative marketing tool. We know that the community in which we operate is part

of the school environment, ”says me. Gerber, proud principal of Randhart Primary School. Many thanks to Mall at Newmarket who allowed us to sow joy amidst the many challenges in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic reminds us of the fragility of our lives and that it is faith and hope that bind us together. The lyrics, Jerusalema ikhaya lami, definitely confirm how the Ranties feel: South Africa is our home.

A study has revealed that domestic workers suffer abuse and sexual harassment at the hands of their employers. A hotline to report abuse and an improved inspectorate by the labour department focused on domestic workers has been proposed. The study commissioned by Izwi Domestic Workers Alliance and Hlanganisa Institute of Development in Southern Africa, was conducted in July and August with domestic workers from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The report showed that domestic workers did not report abuse because they are too scared to lose their jobs and income. This situation worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many domestic workers were locked down at their workplaces and were unable to leave the house. Domestic workers are often foreign migrants, frequently undocumented and working largely in isolation in the homes of employers. One of the domestic workers interviewed told a story of how her employer’s teenage son instructed her to stop wearing underwear when she cleaned the house. “When she approached the boy’s father – her employer – he denounced her as a liar, accused her of abusing his son, and dismissed her immediately, the report reads. Domestic workers interviewed reported

that employers saw them as vulnerable because they were poor and believed they could be manipulated. “Some reported employers being aware that workers desperately needed their incomes. Many reported feeling powerless in the face of abuse. “Most survey respondents did not believe that the South African government had the capacity to deal with GBV in the domestic work sector.â€? Hlanganisa and Izwi have recommended that the department of labour improve the monitoring of national policies geared at improving the working and living conditions of domestic workers. This included the expansion of the department of labour inspectorate for the beneďŹ t of domestic workers and other vulnerable sectors. The organisations also recommended that the government establish call centres that can assist domestic workers as a vulnerable employment sector in dealing with GBV in the workplace. “Without the protections available to corporate employees, and often without an employment contract, they are forced to report to either the perpetrator himself, or his wife. Workers choosing to go to the police have been accused of lying, even if a case is opened. “No matter what avenue she reports through, she will almost inevitably lose her job. Her only choice becomes silence.â€?

Mother Poisons Herself And Children Police confirmed an incident where a mother allegedly poisoned her five children and herself. A six month old baby was the only child to survive. The tragedy unfolded in the Phamong Village, Qwa-Qwa over the weekend. Mangale Mabaso, Pheelo (9), and Teboho (6) were declared dead at the scene. Mangale’s mother found her daughter and grandchildren lying on the floor unconscious and immediately called an ambulance. The police’s Motantse Makhele said: “She apparently left her house and

returned to her parents’ home with her kids. It was on Saturday when her mother found her 29-year-old daughter and her five children lying on the floor. An ambulance was called and the mother and two kids, aged 6 and 9, were declared dead on the scene.” The other two children died later in the hospital. Mangale’s six-month-old baby was the only one to survive. The mother allegedly poisoned herself and the children after an argument with her partner.

Language Changes At South Africa’s Schools

The Department of Basic Education will look at piloting new language changes to assist students who do not study in their home language. Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said that in terms of current policy a candidate must, unless otherwise stated, respond to the question paper in the language of learning and teaching. “Currently, at the Grade 12 level, the learner is either taught through the medium of English or Afrikaans. Hence, provision is currently made only for learners to respond in English or Afrikaans, in their non-language subjects.” “English and Afrikaans are used as LoLT throughout the system, although just 23% of South Africans identify English and Afrikaans as their Home Languages. African Home Languages are used as LoLT mainly in the foundation phase, and thereafter transit to English.” “However, the department is currently investigating the option of providing candidates with question papers that are presented both in the language of learning and teaching and in the mother tongue of the learner,” she said. “This option will first be piloted in either Grade 10 or Grade 11; and based on the outcome in this pilot, it will (be)

considered for implementation in the high stakes Grade 12 examination.” This aligns with broader language changes that the Department of Education is seeking to introduce across a number of earlier grades. In a separate written parliamentary Q&A, Motshekga said that her department now intends to introduce African languages as mother tongue incrementally beyond the foundation phase (Grade R – Grade 3). Motshekga said that this change follows a successful ‘Mother Tongue Based Bilingual Education pilot’ run by the Eastern Cape Department of Education. As part of the pilot, 2,015 schools are using IsiXhosa and Sesotho as the language of learning and teaching (LoLT) beyond the foundation phase. Motshekga said that learners in these schools are taught Mathematics, Natural Science and Technology in their home languages IsiXhosa and Sesotho. Motshekga added that learners in the pilot outperformed those not in the cohort in the June examinations on 17 out of 18 questions. “The National Curriculum Statement encourages learners to learn through their home language, particularly in lower grades where learners learn the critical foundational skills of reading, writing and numeracy.”

Wits defender Patrick Phungwayo is now a sangoma

answered his spiritual calling. According to a source close to the football player, Phungwayo has had the calling for a long time and he could no longer ignore it. The source said: “He is a traditional healer now and there is no time for football. He could have signed for any team but couldn’t do that because he had to answer his calling.” According to the source, Phungwayo has accepted that he will no longer be playing football at a professional level. Phungwayo has been without a team since Free State stars were relegated in 2019. He was out of the public eye for quite a while but he has recently been sharing pictures of himself and his family on Facebook. Most recently, he shared a picture of himself in his car wearing traditional healer attire. Many of his Facebook friends acknowledged his calling and wondered if he would ever go back to playing professional football. The 32-year-old has also had a stint overseas with Greek team Panionios. Phungwayo is still young and can still play football should he choose to go back, but until that moment comes he will continue to honour his calling.
