A NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR

“STOP TREATING WOMEN AS TOYS”

STOP KILLING

OUR SISTERS

As men we’ve already been labelled, some call us trash, some call us useless, and we’ve even been labelled as dogs. It’s time for us to change the way the world sees us Let’s stop killing our sisters! How will we continue developing the world? If we kill the people that are supposed to assist us. Let’s stop trafficking our future wives, Let’s stop raping our sisters, let’s save them instead of destroying them, let’s help then instead of killing them. Let’s turn our names from trash to treasure. From useless to useful, from dogs to doctors. Let us change our image

President Cyril Ramphosa has called for a national effort to change the psyche of men in South Africa as he visited the family of slain University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana in East London on Friday.

“The moral fibre of our nation is now at a point where men must take responsibility for the manner in which we treat the women of our country,” Ramaphosa said while sitting in the living room of the Mrweryana home

with her family fellow political leaders and faith-based leaders. “Women should no longer be treated as toys, women should no longer be treated as objects that men want to kick around, want to rape and also want to kill. This must now be stopped.” Ramaphosa personally offered his condolences to the 19-year-old’s relatives, also thanking the family for allowing people to use her name and image to mobilise people in the country to take action. He called for a bigger national project to stamp out the scourge of the rape and killing of girls and women. “We also have to start a much broader campaign which will encompass and involve a lot of our people so that the psyche of our nation, particularly the psyche of men must now be changed in the way that men relate to women, in the way that men relate to young women and girls.”

Santaco orders angry taxi drivers to stop violent protest action

SEND YOUR VIEWS AND OPINIONS TO: ZEB@TAXITIMES.NET

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) put down its foot to convince reluctant taxi operators to disengage in anti-drug protests that disturbed traffic, business and service delivery in Pretoria. Chairperson of the organisations in Tshwane Xolly Tshabala joined forces with the police outside the Bloed Street

Taxi Rank to instruct taxi operators to revert their focus to driving commuters and let law enforcement to do its job. MMC for Community Safety and Emergency Services Karen Meyer had criticised the actions of taxi operators who burnt shacks of foreign nationals they accused of using drugs in Marabastad on Monday.

She said their actions were disappointing and a betrayal of an agreement among herself, MMC for Roads and Transport Sheila-Lynn Senkubuge, the metro police department and various taxi associations. Addressing angry taxi operators Tshabalala said he was giving them a directive from taxi associations that they should pullback and waited for an agreed-upon feedback about the case of slain taxi operator Jabu Baloyi. Tshabalala said his announcement was not a negotiation but a directive from associations that came from an engagement between law enforcement and the taxi industry that Baloyi’s case would be investigated thoroughly and an update would be given to taxi operators from Friday. Meyers said: “I’m extremely grateful for what the taxi associations have done to help stop these violence demonstrations and I hope things remain peaceful because we cannot have a situation whereby our people resort to violence to solve challenges.

Brenda Fassie statue to return to Newtown The removal of the statue caused a stir, with the public as residents were not informed of the removal. In a statement, the city of Johannesburg confirmed the statue’s return. “The much-loved Brenda Fassie statue will be returning to the Newtown Cultural Precinct, to occupy a place of honour at the public plaza outside the Market Theatre. Previously located outside Newtown’s Bassline (currently Music Factory), the statue was removed for repairs on 11 June 2019, following concerns about its safe-keeping.” The statue was created in 2006 as part of the Sunday Times Heritage Project to mark the 100th year anniversary of the

By Oluthando Keteyi newspaper. In the statement, the city said, that they are exploring options of where the statue would be placed. “The consultative process produced an overwhelming response was that the sculpture should remain in Newtown. When exploring options in Newtown, the most supported location proposed was outside The Market Theatre. We as the City support this solution as it reflects the desires of our residents and other important stakeholders. MaBrrr will always have a place in our hearts, and a home in our City.” The city of Joburg has not confirmed when the statue will be back.

SA mourns Robert Mugabe

The South African government expressed “great sadness” over the passing away of Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe, who ruled his country for 37 years from independence until late 2017. Mugabe died aged 95. “South Africa expresses her sympathies to the people and the government of Zimbabwe. President Mugabe was a great freedom fighter who played a sterling role both in the freedom of Africa, as well as in leading the struggle and building democracy in Zimbabwe,” South Africa’s International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor said. “Our deepest sympathies to his family. To the people of Zimbabwe and the government.” Mugabe was admired by many as a freedom fighter and African statesman who raised literacy levels in his country and improved access to health services among

blacks after independence from Britain in 1980, but was reviled by many others both at home and abroad for running what was once one of Africa’s most promising economies into the ground. Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, currently in neighbouring South Africa for the World Economic Forum on Africa, announced Mugabe’s death via his Twitter account on Friday morning. Mnangagwa gave no further details, but media reports said the increasingly frail Mugabe died in Singapore, where he had frequently travelled for medical treatment over the last few years. Mugabe, who became Zimbabwe’s first black leader at independence, first as prime minister in 1980 and then as president from 1987, was forced to step down by the military in November 2017, amid infighting within his ruling ZANU-PF party.

Madagascar Withdraw From Bafana Bafana Match Due To Xenophobia

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has released Bafana Bafana players to their clubs after Madagascar pulled out of the two sides’ scheduled friendly citing ongoing xenophobic attacks. Bafana ought to have hosted Madagascar in a friendly on Saturday in Johannesburg but the islanders followed the foosteps of Zambia, who also cancelled a friendly with South Africa on account of violent attacks in the Rainbow Nation. SAFA relased a statement last night confirming that the players were released to their clubs. “The South African Football Association (SAFA) has taken a decision to release the players who had been in camp whole week to go back to their clubs after the withdrawal of Madagascar team from the friendly match against Bafana Bafana which was scheduled for Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 7 September 2019. The decision to release the players was taken after the meeting with the players and technical staff. SAFA has consistently and strongly condemned the xenophobic attacks and the criminal looting of foreign and South African businesses and wanton attacks on foreign nationals and South African citizens,” read the statement.
