Hammanskraal water not good for human consumption “The residents have been complaining that we have been billed by the city using estimates. You will find this month you are charged R30 000 and the following month it is a hundred and something thousand and the other month it is R5 000.”

Last week Thursday, the SA Humans Rights Commission visited Hammanskraal, to evaluate the progress made by the Tshwane metro in addressing water quality concerns in the area. According to an article published by Pretoria North Record, Hammanskraal residents first raised concerns back in July 2018 to the commission about the colour, taste and foul smell in the water. CSIR last month confirmed that the water was not suitable for human consumption. According to CSIR senior researcher and water scientist Wouter le Roux a total of 144 samples were tested. “All we can say is that there are certain illnesses associated with drinking that water. We did advocate using something like bleach for water chlorination to at least kill the germs in the water,” he said. After the Tshwane metro failed to appear in Hammanskraal for the visit, human rights commission head of legal services Buang Jones said metro officials “always claim to be in a meeting”. “This has been the same excuse even when we convened the community meeting,” he said. “The city informed us that they had a

council meeting. This is a flagrant disregard of the chapter 9 institution and the city should cooperate.” Hammanskraal residents organisation chairperson Tumelo Koitheng said residents also complained about “exorbitant” water bills.

Koitheng said some of the water meters were not readable because one could not see the numbers, but that residents were still charged. “The residents have been complaining that we have been billed by the city using estimates. You will find this month

Fire claims 120 homes in Pretoria At least 30 shacks have been ravaged in a blaze at the Bremmer informal settlement in Daspoort, Pretoria, leaving about 120 people homeless on Monday, EWN reported.

Three people were reportedly injured in the blaze and were rushed to hospital. Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso told EWN that it was unclear what started the fire. “With wind like this and the hot conditions we’ve been experiencing, one cannot rule out the possibility of a veld fire,” he reportedly said. Gauteng has been experiencing heatwave conditions since the weekend, and the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings that there was a higher probability of veld fires.

Viggy quits Idols following her twins elimination

Idols SA twin Viggy Qwabe has quit the show in a dramatic twist after her twin sister Virginia was eliminated from the competition. In statement released by Mzansi Magic on Monday morning, the channel confirmed Viggy’s decision to exit the competition. According to the statement, the Qwabe twins, their family, the production company and channel met after the show on Sunday to formalise Viggy’s decision. Philly Kubheka HOD PR & Publicity Local Entertainment Channel, advised Idols fans that voting lines have been closed for this round and there will be no elimination in the upcoming episode. “After lengthy discussions, Viggy who still remained in the

Idols competition post tonight’s elimination has decided to exit the competition. We would like to wish both Viggy Qwabe and Virginia Qwabe all the best in their career as they are both extremely talented.” Idols SA contestant, Snenhlanhla ‘Sneziey’ Msomi, has been accused of bullying the Qwabe twins and made out to be the reason Viggy decided to leave the competition. Sneziey came forward and made it very clear that she never once bullied the Qwabe twins and wishes nothing but the best for them. Mzansi Magic also jumped to Sneziey’s defence by posting a statement which clearly shows that the Qwabe twins were never mistreated by anyone on the show, especially Sneziey.

Early detection of breast cancer is key in beating breast cancer

Every woman is potentially at risk of getting breast cancer. Men can get breast cancer too! While breast cancer cannot be prevented, there are important steps to take to detect breast cancer early, even before physical symptoms appear, and before it has a chance to spread. As frightening as a cancer diagnosis is, the good news is that medical advances and early screening and diagnosis result in more women surviving and beating cancer with less aggressive and invasive treatment. This is according to Prof. Jackie Smilg, Chair of the Radiological Society’s subspecialty group, the Breast Imaging Society of South Africa (BISSA). Breast cancer is now the leading cancer in women in SA and will affect 1 in 28 South Africans in their lifetimes. This figure is even higher in urban communities in South Africa, where the incidence is as high as 1 in 8 according to National Health Laboratory statistics. This insidious disease continues to be the subject of intensive educational campaigns to encourage women of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds to subscribe to early detection and diagnosis. Regular Mammograms remain the best defence The mammogram remains the gold standard for breast screening and is the foundation of early detection of breast cancer. Regular mammograms can often help find breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most likely to be successful. One of the greatest advantages of a mammogram is that it can find breast changes years before physical symptoms develop. “The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is to find the disease before it causes symptoms. Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. As with all cancer screening, recommendations for breast cancer screening rely on a combination of factors involving evidence about the risk of the condition, the benefits and harms of the actual screening, and the cost. Results from many dec-

ades of research clearly show that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found early, less likely to need aggressive treatment and more likely to be cured,” says Prof Smilg. Dispelling the myths around radiation used in modern mammography It is important to dispel the myths that the negligible doses of radiation used in modern mammography can possibly produce breast cancer or represent any danger to the body, including the thyroid gland. There is simply no scientific evidence to support this. “Several other breast imaging technologies such as tomosynthesis, virtual mammography and contrast mammography - have brought a new dimension to the fight against breast cancer. Digital tomosynthesis allows multiple levels of breast tissue to be interrogated and it is now possible to create a 2D mammogram (virtual mammogram) from these tomosynthesis slices. Contrast Mammography, where contrast investigates the vascularity (blood supply) of a lesion, promises to be a valuable problem-solving tool. In women with a significant family history of breast cancer or special circumstances, mammography can also be followed by ultrasound in both screening and symptomatic examinations and/or breast MRI,” explains Prof. Smilg. “Women are often irrationally persuaded by the fear of radiation risk, which is negligible, to use other ‘imaging techniques’ such as thermography, use of light emitting devices or systems that “feel” masses. These imaging techniques are often operated by personnel with no medical training and no training in conventional breast imaging. There is no evidence that these methods have any value in the screening and detection of breast cancer when compared with mammography. They may do more harm by missing breast cancers, leading to delayed diagnosis and limited treatment options, if they are used as a substitute for mammography,” she adds.

Samuel Eto’o: “Andres Iniesta was the greatest player I ever played with” Summer 2004 brought Eto’o to Barcelona, where he scored 108 in 144 appearances over five seasons, winning three LaLiga titles, plus the LaLiga top scorer award in 2005/06. “At Barcelona it was about opening the eyes of the world, making it known that a kid coming from where I came from, when given the same opportunities as the others, could do well,” he says. “It was tough at Mallorca but when I got to Barcelona I saw that we could not fail, we were a group of unbelievable players and we just had to win. It was a unique time, we were up against a unique Real Madrid side, with the galacticos.”

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o says his ex-blaugrana teammate Andres Iniesta is the greatest player he ever shared a dressing-room with. Now 38 and recently retired, the LaLiga Santander Ambassador spent five seasons as a teammate of Iniesta’s at the Camp Nou, winning 10 trophies, including three LaLiga titles and two Champions Leagues, in the process. The former Cameroon international says that naming current blaugrana captain Lionel Messi would be too easy, and Iniesta’s technical ability was just amazing. “I shared a dressing-room with many great players,” Eto’o said. “If I have to

choose one I would say Iniesta. He impressed me from the first day… Messi is obviously from another planet so we can put him aside. But Iniesta made me say ‘wow… hats off’.” Eto’o scored 162 LaLiga goals in 280 LaLiga games during over a decade playing in Spain for Espanyol, Real Madrid, Leganes, RCD Mallorca and Barça. “I feel proud of what I achieved but at the same time happy to be able to rest and enjoy myself with my wife and children,” he says following his retirement in September. “The best moment of my career was my debut. You have a lot of ambition; your eyes are opened.”

Raised in Mkon, a suburb of Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, Eto’o had already made his full senior international debut before his first LaLiga game for Madrid aged just 17 in December 1998, but he really came to prominence after joining Mallorca in January 2000. His 54 goals in 128 games for the Balearic Islanders included a double strike in a 3-0 victory over Recreativo de Huelva in the 2003 Copa del Rey final. “I reached my top level when at Mallorca,” he says. “We were a group of normal guys who had to compete against the great players at Real Madrid and Barcelona. But we did it very well, we were proud of defending our jersey and our island.”

Always keen for a new challenge, Eto’o also played in Italy [Inter Milan and Sampdoria], Russia [Anzhi], England [Chelsea and Everton] and Turkey [Antalyaspor and Konyaspor], before finishing his playing career earlier this year at Qatar SC. He also won the African Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002 with Cameroon, and won a Gold medal with his country at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Eto’o has now set his eyes on a new challenge: coaching a team at the highest level, perhaps ‘his’ RCD Mallorca, who returned to LaLiga Santander for the 2019/20 campaign. “Now I want to prepare for new challenges,” he says. “I love football so I would like some day to be able to coach at the highest level. It could be ‘my’ Mallorca or some other big team. I have had the fortune to win things as a player, and I would like to do that again as a coach.”
