EID MUBARAK Letter from the DA Johannesburg South team

THE BEST Letter by Chantel Morgan

The DA Johannesburg South team would like to take Someone just sent me a copy of the tame TIMES this opportunity to wish the Muslim community of the Johannesburg South newspaper. I love it! tame South and colleagues all the best over the last few TIMES is the NEWSpaper! days of Ramadan. We wish them an Eid Mubarak which begins with the sighting of the new moon either Friday or Saturday evening. We would also like to wish our Muslim councillors Eid Mubarak. Letter by Willem Bronkhorst

THANK YOU

With Mandela Day just around the corner, I thought I’d mention the tame TIMES production team’s little good deed – we freed a baby bird from an unused ceiling extractor fan. For most of the day, loud chirps could be heard coming from the server room. On further inspection, we found a young sparrow trapped in the ceiling. We freed him (we assumed it was a male) and created a makeshift home from a shoebox and some tissues. We fed him some mashed up Bakers Good Morning Breakfast Biscuits, gave him water and named him Rufus (because he came from the roof – see what we did there?). Sadly, he passed away several days later. Despite Rufus’ sad ending, we felt proud that we helped. On a happier note, I would like to wish all our Muslim readers an Eid Mubarak. We hope that your Eid festivities are well spent with family and friends this year.

FROM LEFT Ward 57 Cllr Faeeza Chame, Ward 55 Cllr Rashieda Landis and Ward 54 Cllr Sergio Isa dos Santos

Hi Candace, once again you have outdone yourself. We are so grateful for the support from tame TIMES given to our daughter Nidene Bronkhorst. I must admit that I enjoy the content from tame TIMES more than ever. Everybody at Figures Models Glenvista and their families make quite a fuss about it. Please see if we can get the paper delivered to the Gillview area. In this difficult period which our youth has to evolve in, they need to be “tamed” for the “times” when they face the opportunities to excel in life with a calm open mind to evaluate and take every good opportunity life has to offer. We know that Figures’ talent will fly the South African flag high and show the international agents that South Africa has huge potential for the international market.

EDITOR’S EDITORIAL PICK

Last week, the owners of the Jugomaro Predator Park failed in their eleventh-hour court attempt to keep their wild cats on their property. The Fernandes family approached the High Court after about 20 men arrived on the property unannounced and proceeded to sedate the animals and pack them into vans and trucks. According to reports, the park was liquidated after the owners ran into some severe financial trouble and 12 tigers, including the famous Panjo that went missing in 2010, was part of the settlement. After an emotional plea by Justin Fernandes on social media, friends and family blocked the entrance to the property for several hours to prevent the trucks from leaving with the animals, while the family’s lawyers tried to secure an interdict to keep them on the property. According to lawyer Elias Tsole, they were not aware that the animals had been bought and how they were bought. According to Fernandes, they never received any legal documentation regarding the matter. The family expressed their disgust at how the cats were treated and added that it would take years to rehabilitate them after the trauma. Animal conservationists have also raised concerns, saying that the tigers were caged without food or water for

over 10 hours. One of the tigers was allegedly shot, but according to the Fernandes family they were refused access to it or information about its condition. Fernandes, however, later confirmed as the trucks were leaving that the cats were all fine. “None of them have been hurt and none of them were shot. We were just concerned when the shots went off; one of the cats did drop during one of the fires and we’re just happy that the cats are all still alive and well.” Rosa Fernandes couldn’t contain her emotions as she peeped through the cracks of the van, trying to speak to her animals. The cats that were darted included Siberian tigers, two white tigers and Bengal tigers. On Friday, the liquidators spoke up about the transaction. KIP House was adamant that two lions and 10 tigers were always part of the liquidation settlement. According to them, the new owner of the Jugomaro Predator Park, Antonie Brown, made it clear that he did not want the wildlife on his newly acquired property, as he cannot feed them, they are a threat to his life and he does not know how the setup works, EWN reported. The future of the animals now hangs in the balance as a prolonged court case over the liquidation unfolds.

With her enthusiasm for making a difference, Jessica Janse van Rensburg’s passion is being realised through her involvement in Miss Earth South Africa. Based in Aspen Hills, the stunning third year Wits University student is now a regional finalist for Miss Earth South Africa 2015. Having entered into the programme in April 2015, Janse van Rensburg says that the journey thus far has been fruitful. “I have come such a long way since the day I entered and I know that I have made a difference,” says Janse van Rensburg. “This journey has been important to me because I have always had a passion for education and working with animals and children and Miss Earth South Africa has provided the platform for me in which to do so,” she adds. Janse van Rensburg has been working with various organisations and sponsors to help green the communities she is a part of. She has worked with Mulbarton Primary School, Aloe Ridge Primary School, Lerato Educational Centre, Queenshaven Old Age Village, Mondeor Community School, Mondeor Primary School, Parkview Senior School, Guild Cottage and Tambotie Primary School. All of her greening efforts have been sponsored by Thaba Eco Hotel, Kliprivier Urban Biodiversity Corridor and Keen Gro Nursery. Her funding was sponsored by EQfin, Alex Pullinger, Dave Howe and Webtour Getaways. “A huge thank you goes to all who have helped me on my green journey thus far. I have planted vegetable gardens and trees in aiding environmental education. I have also run a collection for Animal Anti-Cruelty League where I received a huge donation from my community. I have also implemented some waste management projects alongside doing presentations at schools in order to raise awareness about sustainable living. In the next few weeks,

I will be participating in various activities with the Miss Earth South Africa team. One of these includes working at Lulama Primary School in Soweto for Mandela Day,” says Janse van Rensburg. “I think Mandela Day is one of the most important days on the South African calendar because it honours the memory of one of the greatest leaders that the world has ever seen. My favourite quote is by Mandela himself: “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” I believe that in order to change tomorrow, we need to educate our youth in fun and practical ways,” she adds. The Miss Earth South Africa programme is focussed on developing young women through the vehicle of environmental education. The Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership programme that aims to empower young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in the fight to combat the destruction of South Africa’s natural heritage. The programme helps to create an awareness of sustainable development, our environment, wildlife and the conservation of our natural legacy in South Africa, and ultimately the preservation of Mother Earth. “We are excited with the current group of Miss Earth South Africa regional semi-finalists. Projects to be completed include a food garden or waste project with a primary school, planting 10 indigenous trees as well as partaking in the annual Miss Earth South Africa Clean-Ups. We look forward to seeing the results as these young ladies embark on their green journeys within their communities,” notes Catherine Constantinides, Executive Director of the Miss Earth South Africa Programme.

FIAT 500X’S SA DEBUT

The new Fiat 500X will debut in the South African market during the second half of 2015. Launched at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the new compact crossover in the 500 family marks the evolution of the brand and technology through the development in its DNA. A beauty with character, the new car explores a brand-new dimension of being 500, where a mature, elegant, allItalian style “clothes” – like haute couture – the substance of a car that is comfortable, high-performance and always in touch with the world: that’s the X side of beauty, and that’s the soul of the Fiat 500X. Heir to the Fiat 500 of 1957 – the stylistic reference of the rounded lights and the classic logo with chrome-plated bonnet trim is clear – the new Fiat crossover extends the 500 family, comprising the 500, 500C, 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L Living models: cars which are very different in terms of vocation and character, but which have the same roots in common: the iconic Fiat 500. The new Fiat 500X will be available in two different versions – 500X and 500X Cross – equipped with efficient diesel and petrol engines, three types of transmission – manual, 9-speed automatic or twin-clutch 6-speed automatic – and with front-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or front-wheel drive with Traction Plus configurations. Characterised by distinctive, elegant style details, the 500X version is sure to win over young, dynamic and metropolitan customers. On the other hand, a decidedly more off-road look and equipment make the

500X Cross the ideal solution for lovers of leisure and outdoor activities who don’t want to give up the unique style of the Fiat 500. Designed by the Centro Stile Fiat, the new 500X represents a new dimension of the unmistakable 500 where its iconic style and the modern concept of the crossover collide, with the addition of the respectable off-road capability ensured by the Cross version. With a big personality and distinctively

Italian design, the new car is characterised by flexibility, rationality and quality firmly embedded in its compact dimensions, in the ample interior space and the choice of premium materials and fabrics, as well as the most sophisticated technology in the service of safety, comfort and well-being on board. The solid, robust appearance of the car finds its perfect stylistic counterpart in the harmonious line, which emerges in

dimensions ideal for customers looking for comfort space and the equipment typical of compact saloons. At the same time, the 500X also gives a nod to those who need to tackle urban traffic every day, thanks to its modest dimensions. Models, engine derivatives and options will be announced closer to the launch dates.
